A method for making a substantially linear interpolymer of a monovinyl aromatic compound and a rubber, which method comprises polymerizing a homogeneous liquid mixture of polymerizable monoolefin compounds containing as the only polymerizable components at least 63.75% by weight of a polymerizable monovinyl aromatic compound monomer selected from the group consisting of monovinyl aromatic hydrocarbons and derivatives thereof halogenated in the core, not more than 21.25% of a vinylidene monomer compound which is a member of the group consisting of acrylonitrile, methyl isopropenyl ketone and aromatic monoalkenyl hydrocarbons of the series of the benzene and chlorinated derivatives thereof in the core and from 1 to 15% by weight of an unvulcanized rubber which is soluble in styrene monomer and which is selected from the group consisting of natural rubber, synthetic rubber of the GR-S type which contains chemically combined form of 50 to 80% by weight of butadiene and from 20 to 50% of styrene, synthetic rubber of the Buna N type containing in chemically combined form from 75 to 85% by weight of butadiene and from 15 to 25% of acrylonitrile, a copolymer containing in chemically form combined 50% by weight of butadiene and 50% of methylisopropenyl ketone, and polybutadiene rubber, said liquid mixture being substantially free of insoluble gels, heating the liquid mixture of polymerizable components at a polymerization temperature between 60 and 200º C, such that the The reaction mass is maintained in the fluid state or as the monomer is progressively polymerized, and at the same time subjecting the reaction mass to a shear agitation to prevent appreciable crosslinking of the polymer being formed, with resultant formation of a linear interpolymer until at least 10% by weight of the polymerizable monomer starting materials has been polymerized.
