Abstract

The invention comprises compounds for use in controlling coccidiosis infection in poultry having the formula: <FORM:0953875/C2/1> wherein X and Y are identical or different halogen atoms (e.g. chlorine or bromine). The above compounds are prepared by heating a 4-amino-5-[(C1-7 alkoxy)-methyl]-2-propyl-pyrimidine, a picoline and a hydrogen halide, and, if desired, converting the resulting pyridinium halide hydrohalide to the halide or to another halide hydrohalide. 4-Hydroxy-5-[(C1-7 alkoxy)-methyl]-2-propyl. pyrimidines are prepared by reacting either an alkalimetal salt of a C1-7 alkyl a -[(C1-7 alkoxy)-methyl]-b -hydroxy-acrylate or an a -[(C1-7 alkoxy)-methyl]-b -(C1-7 alkoxy) acrylonitrile with butyramidine hydrochloride. Butyramidine hydrochloride is prepared by reacting a mixture of hydrogen chloride, C1-7 alkanol and ammonia with butyronitrile. Alkali metal salts of C1-7 alkyl a -[(C1-7 alkoxy)-methyl]-b -hydroxy-acrylates are prepared by reaction between a C1-7 alkyl acrylate, a C1-7 alkyl formate and an alkali metal C1-7 alkoxide. a -[C1-7 Alkoxy)-methyl]-b -(C1-7 alkoxy)-acrylonitriles are prepared by alkylating the corresponding alkali metal salts of a -[(C1-7 alkoxy)-methyl]-b -hydroxyacrylonitriles. a -[(C1-7 Alkoxy) - methyl] - b - hydroxyacrylonitrile, are obtained in the form of their alkali metal salts by reacting acrylonitrile with a C1-7 alkyl formate in the presence of an alkali metal C1-7 alkoxide. 4-Halogeno-5-[(C1-7 alkoxy)-methyl]-2-propyl-pryrimidines are prepared by treating the corresponding 4-hydroxy compounds with phosphorus oxychloride. 4-Amino-5-[(C1-7 alkoxy) - methyl]-2-propyl-pryrimidines are prepared by treating the corresponding 4-halogeno compounds with concentrated aqueous ammonia under pressure. Specifications 596,867 and 953,876 are referred to.ALSO:Coccidiosis may be controlled in poultry by means of a vitaminised laying mash or a drinking water to which is added between 0.0025 and 0.1% by weight of a 1-(2-propyl 4 aminopyrimidyl (5) methyl) 2 methyl pyridinium halide or halide hydrohalide of the formula <FORM:0953875/A5-A6/1> wherein X and Y are identical or different halogen atoms, e.g. chlorine or bromine. Further pharmaceutical compounds such as choline chloride and sulphonamides, in particular sulphaquinoxaline, may also be present. Vitamins specified are A, B12, D, methionine, niacin, calcium pantothenate and riboflavin.
