Dicha cantidad Vx se determina en función de la temperatura del agua fría de entrada Tf, el volumen de agua Vu que se encuentra a una temperatura igual o superior a la temperatura deseada Tx, y la temperatura media Tm de dicho volumen Vu, a través de la fórmula:
