El gas de síntesis esta compuesto por monóxido de carbono e hidrógeno -CO y H_{2}-. Los procesos de obtención están muy estudiados y existen plantas de producción industrial del gas de síntesis. Aunque la capacidad calorífica es inferior al gas natural, su obtención de la materia orgánica y del metano hace muy atractivo su uso como fuente de energía. Dada la importante contaminación ambiental producto del monóxido de carbono -CO- que lo compone el gas de síntesis -CO y H_{2}-, se han buscado formas de purificar dicho gas para obtener hidrógeno -H_{2}-, que es la base de las energías limpias. El hidrógeno -H_{2}-, como energía limpia y no contaminante, es una de las líneas de trabajo más importantes que se están desarrollando. Por ello, la obtención de hidrógeno -H_{2}- como fuente abundante de energía es una de las prioridades actuales en la investigación. El gas síntesis -CO y H_{2}- tiene la posibilidad de ser esa fuente de producción de hidrógeno -H_{2}-, siempre que se pueda purificar, eliminando el monóxido de carbono -CO-.
