Abstract

Método para la estabilización de metales pesados en residuos sólidos y suelos contaminados mediante la aplicación de óxido de magnesio de baja ley. Se utiliza como agente estabilizante un óxido de magnesia natural, para la estabilización de residuos sólidos y suelos contaminados con pH inferior a 8 y un contenido elevado de metales pesados. La utilización de óxido de magnesio sitúa el pH de la mezcla en valores para los cuales la solubilidad de los metales pesados es mínima. La cantidad de óxido de magnesio necesaria depende de la naturaleza de cada residuo; ésta se optimiza mediante la realización del test de lixiviación sobre varias proporciones de residuo/estabilizante. Sin embargo, y a diferencia de otros estabilizantes comúnmente utilizados, la adición de un exceso de óxido de magnesio mantiene el pH del residuo estabilizado en los valores óptimos de solubilidad de los metales pesados. La adición de las cantidades necesarias de agua al residuo estabilizado permite el fraguado del mismocon el tiempo, adquiriendo éste una consistencia que facilita la posterior manipulación.Method for stabilizing heavy metals in solid waste and contaminated soils by applying low grade magnesium oxide.
