Abstract

System for locating whales by passive sonar to avoid collisions with boats.Consisting of a permanent, passive (passive sonar) location system which tracks the individual movements of whales in real time to prevent collisions with boats of all types. The system consists of a series of fixed, passive acoustic buoys (each buoy includes at least four hydrophones and a software program that analyses the acoustic signals to locate each individual) forming a two dimensional network (1), a buoy-to-buoy communication system (2), a shore to buoy communication system (3), a three-dimensional geographical software tracking program on the shore (4), a ship-to-shore communication system (5) and an on-board geographical tracking receiver system (6).This system can be extended to the location of whales that are not calling by using ambient noise and the acoustic signals from calling whales as an active sonar source (7).
