Abstract

Method for conferring tolerance to hydric and saline osmotic stress on glycophyte plants through the use of genes coding for proteins having peroxidase activity. For this purpose the nucleotide sequence corresponding to the open reading frame of the neutral tomato peroxidase gene TPX1 or the basic tomato peroxidase gene TPX2 is introduced into the genome of the plant using the conversion method mediated by the bacterium Agrobacterium tumefaciens. The transformed plants express the trans gene and demonstrate a significantly tolerant response to osmotic, hydric and saline stress at different stages in their growth.
