Abstract

A method of controlling an internal combustion engine with a fuel pump comprises checking whether the difference ( DELTA U) between two successively measured values (U(t0),(U(t1)) of the engine supply voltage exceeds a threshold difference value (US). If it does, a previously switched-off fuel pump of the engine is activated again. If it does not, the mean of two successively detected engine speed values (N1, N2) is checked for location within a predetermined range. If the mean value is so located, the pump is activated, but if it is not so located the checking is repeated with a further two successively detected engine speed values.
