Abstract

PURPOSE:To provide an air conditioner which economically realizes a reduction in the power consumption upon cooling operation and a high heating performance upon heating operation without using any apecial apparatus and which has an improved startup performance upon cooling operation. CONSTITUTION:An air conditioner is provided consisting of a refrigerating cycle comprising a compressor 1, a four-way valve 2, an outdoor heat exchanger 3, a pressure reducing valve 4, an indoor heat exchanger 5, a refrigerant pipe 6 interconnecting all of the aforesaid parts and a bypass 9 connected from the four-way valve 2 through a pilot valve 7 for opening and closing a bypass port 8 to a suction pipe 6d of the compressor 1. The air conditioner is further provided with a control means whereby the bypass port 8 is closed upon heating operation and opened upon cooling operation and whereby the bypass port 8 is closed at the start of cooling operation and opened for the subsequent normal operation.
