Abstract

Procedure for the recovery of mercury from flat battery cells or other products containing mercury, with simultaneous destruction of organic matter. The distillation of mercury from flat battery cells includes the simultaneous distillation of the organic fraction that they contain (plastics, etc.), obtaining some distillates which contain high viscosity pyrolytic oils and impure mercury that does not coalesce. The patented process, on the other hand, achieves complete oxidation of the organic matter, and accordingly the distillate is formed solely of mercury of a purity of 99% and water from the oxidation of the organic matter. In order to achieve this oxidation at the temperature at which the process is carried out (between 600 and 750 degree C) it is necessary to add oxygen. In order to avoid the flow of gases during the process, which involves treating the discharge gases, the process being patented incorporates the necessary oxygen into the reactor in the form of mineral oxides (MnO2, CuO or Fe2O3) which will add oxygen by decomposition at the working temperature. This leads to a distillate solely formed of mercury and water, and an easily fusible residue for obtaining a concentrate in precious metals and an inert slag. Cutting out gas treatment by not circulating air during the process eliminates emissions into the surrounding environment.
