Abstract
Modification of the geometry of the cross-section of the straight stock rail of a railway turnout which permits preventing the impact of the wheel flanges of railway vehicles on the straight stock rail on their passing through the points set for the direct line, and easily incorporable into both new points designs and those in service in the line. The machining of the running surface of the straight stock rail is proposed, in accordance with a specific design for each point, determined by the original geometry of the turnout (plan and cross-section geometry of the straight blade and of the straight and curved stock blades along the whole length of the points and the radius of the diverted track) and the characteristics of the traffic to which it is or will be subjected (geometric and mechanical characterisation of the axles and bogies of the approved vehicles, approved traffic speed). Subsequent to said machining, smoother running of the traffic is achieved, minimising as far as possible the stress of the axles on the straight blade. This allows a reduction in the maintenance costs, both of the points and of the rolling stock and the achieving of higher levels of comfort.
