Abstract

Antigen characterisation procedure by the quantitative use of monoclonal antibodies. The procedure is based on (i) the existence of a family of antigens with a certain kinship relationship to the antigen to be characterised and in the knowledge of the genetic distances between the representative members of the said family (reference antigens), and (ii) a panel of monoclonal antibodies (MoAb) of which the reactivity is known for all the reference antigens. The procedure comprises the stages of calibrating said MoAb panel, measuring the reactivity of the antigen to be characterised in relation to each MoAb, determining the relationship between the genetic and antigenic distances of the antigen to be characterised with those of the reference antigens, and classifying the problem antigen with respect to the reference antigens. The procedure permits the identification and characterisation of antigens and is particularly useful in the diagnostic field.
