Abstract
Improvements in devices for determining the apparent density of solid materials. The measurement system is based on the immersion of the sample in mercury, the dry sample being weighed on a balance and measuring the resulting force on the same when submerged, the apparent density being determined by the equation (Dap) = W1/W3.[rho] where W1 is the weight of the dry sample, W3 the weight of the sample submerged in mercury and [rho] the density of the mercury. There is a compartment 8 opening downwards over a table 9 on which is located the balance 10 with the vessel 24 containing mercury. An extractor 11 removes the toxic vapours. There is also a control panel 12 and an information unit 13 for data analysis and organising operations. In the compartment 8 there is located an articulated arm 14 provided with a vertical approximation cylinder 16, in turn carrying a work head 15 on which there is a suction pad 18 and small peripheral vertical microcylinders 19. Each cylinder 19 carries a needle 20 with which the body is submerged in the mercury.
