Abstract

Tonometric catheter method and apparatus 20 with remote detection for taking samples of a property of a fluid or gas of interest in a hollow internal organ. The method is applied by introducing the catheter into the organ in such a way that a sampling chamber is located on a portion of the wall of the organ. The sampling chamber is left in position on the wall of the organ for a sufficient time to allow the fluid or gas of interest to diffuse into the sampling chamber. The concentration of the property of the fluid or gas of interest is then analysed. The pH of the wall of the organ can be calculated on the basis of the concentration of the property of the fluid or gas which is of interest. The apparatus comprises a tonometric catheter 20 with one or more sampling chambers 40 for introduction into a hollow internal organ or into an area contiguous therewith an electrical sensor 42 to produce a signal indicating the state of the organ and a conductor 56 to convey the signal to a place outside the organ, in such a way that the state of the organ can be remotely determined.
