Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain the titled ester having extremely faint color and useful as a food additive, emulsifier for cosmetic, etc., by reacting a higher fatty acid with sorbitol or sorbitan containing direct or indirect reducing sugars at a total amount of less than a specific level. CONSTITUTION:The objective ester is produced by reacting (A) a higher fatty acid, especially a 12-18C (un)saturated straight-chain fatty acid or 8-36C branched fatty acid with (B) sorbitol or sorbitan containing <=0.08wt%, preferably <=0.06wt% direct reducing sugar and indirect reducing sugar in total, generally in the presence of a catalyst (e.g. NaOH) in an inert gas at 150-260 deg.C for 0.5-10hr. The content of the reducing sugar in sorbitol, etc., can be decreased e.g. by treating with sodium borohydrate or catalytically reducing with hydrogen.
