Abstract

A steel making method comprising the combined operations of: confining a mass of relatively fine particles of an iron oxide to heat the mass to a reduction temperature lower than the melting temperature of metallic iron subjecting the mass to a reducing agent while it is at the reduction temperature until the mass is completely reduced to metallic iron introducing carbon to metallic iron before allowing the latter to cool to form a cellulose steel with predetermined content in carbon to maintain substantially the temperature but at a value between 732ºC and the melting point of the steel that is being formed by the introduction of carbon into the metallic iron to favor a proper bond between the individual steel particles and then hot-working the cellulose steel to a substantially non-cellulous form.
