Two steel bars (A,B), used for reinforcing concrete, are fastened together with a loop of twisted wire. The wire (1) is supplied in a U-shape and pushed over the bars. A pair of hinged jaws (29,30) grip the free ends of the wire and press them around the bars. - A hook (16) which engages the curved end of the U-shape is moved axially away from the bars. The mechanism which retracts the hook simultaneously imparts a rotation so that the wire is twisted and binds the bars firmly together.
