Abstract

Prepn. of a mono- or dichloro-(trifluoromethyl) pyridine cpd. (I) by contacting a mono- or dichloro-(trichloromethyl) pyridine cpd. (II) with HF in the presence of a metal halide catalyst in liq. phase is characterised by recovering (I) by distillation and using the distillation residue to catalyse further F for Cl exchange. - The catalyst is e.g. FeCl2, FeCl3, NbCl5, TaCl5, SbF3, FeF2, FeF3, SnF4, TiF4, CrF2, etc. pref. FeCl3. Amt. used is pref. 0.1-20 mole % based on (II). Metal halide/phosphorus halide combinations may also be used, the pref. phosphorus halide being PCl5. Catalysts bonded to inert supports or precursors forming the catalyst in situ may also be used.
