Abstract

The present invention relates to a stem for an aerosol valve comprising a flange at its lower end adjoined by a rotationally symmetrical hollow body of smaller diameter than that of the flange, having at least one radial inlet opening at its end facing the flange and having an axial outlet opening at its upper end remote from the flange. In order to enable a smoother opening of the aerosol valve, it is proposed in the context of the invention that the flange comprises a first portion having a first diameter and a second portion having a second diameter, the first portion being arranged at the lower end of the flange and the second portion being arranged at the side of the flange facing the rotationally symmetrical hollow body, and the diameter of the second portion decreasing from the diameter of the first portion towards the rotationally symmetrical hollow body. This means that the stem does not open abruptly, but gradually, resulting in a smoother opening of the aerosol valve.

Description

DESCRIPTION
Stem for an aerosol valve
The present invention relates to a stem for an aerosol valve, comprising a flange at its lower end, adjoining which is a rotationally symmetrical hollow body of smaller diameter than that of the flange, which has at least one radial inlet opening at its end facing the flange and has an axial outlet opening at its upper end remote from the flange.
Stems of this kind are known. The stem is slidably arranged in an opening of an aerosol container against a restoring force. By pressing the stem down against the restoring force or tilting the stem against the restoring force, a connection is established between the interior of an aerosol container and its exterior, and product can pass out of the aerosol container through the inlet opening(s), the rotationally symmetrical hollow body and the outlet opening. The product then exits through a dispensing device connected to the outlet opening.
In the closed position, the flange of the stem rests against the wall in the portion around the opening of the aerosol container and closes the opening. Unfortunately, the opening of the aerosol valve occurs relatively abruptly when the flange gets off the wall.
The object of the present invention is to provide a smoother opening of the aerosol valve.
According to the invention, this task is solved in a stem according to the preamble in that the stem is a tilting stem, wherein the flange has a first portion with a first diameter and a second portion with a second diameter, the first portion being arranged at the lower end of the flange and the second portion being arranged on the side of the flange facing the rotationally symmetrical hollow body, and the diameter of the second portion reducing from the diameter of the first portion towards the rotationally symmetrical hollow body. According to the invention, there is thus a flange that has a first portion at its lower end, which is adjoined by a second portion with a cross-section that is smaller than that of the first portion. This means that the stem does not open abruptly, but gradually, resulting in a smoother opening of the aerosol valve.
In addition, the reducing cross-section results in a saving of material, which reduces the mass of the stem to be moved. Stems are made of high-quality materials, such as fibre-reinforced plastics, due to their high mechanical load, so that even minor material savings are relevant due to the high material costs and the large quantities of stems produced.
As another advantage, the flange having a first portion with a first diameter and a second portion with a second diameter forms a ramp in the stem. The ramp facilitates the tilting opening of the stem. The lower surface of the grommet facing the stem can be flat and smooth.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention, it is provided that the diameter of the flange is reduced uniformly over the entire second portion.
This linear reduction in diameter results in a uniform opening action of the valve. The flange thus has a slope towards the upper side of the stem.
Preferably, the angle of the slope to the axis of rotation of the stem is between 30 and 60°, more preferably between 40 and 50°.
In an alternative embodiment of the invention, it is provided that the diameter of the flange is reduced unevenly over the entire second portion.
This diameter reduction may be in the form of a convex curb, a concave curve or in steps. The curb has preferably the shape of a radius. A parabolic shape of the curb is another preferred embodiment. The steps may be all identical or of different size. Of course, the above-mentioned shapes can also be combined. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, any of the above-mentioned shapes of the flange can be combined with a recess on the upper inner area of the flange, preferably with a radius-shaped recess.
Depending on the shape of the curve, a smoother or harder opening of the aerosol valve can be achieved.
A preferred further development of the invention is that the flange has recesses.
These recesses, which are blind holes and not through holes, also save material and reduce the weight of the stem.
It is also possible that the flange has through-holes in its portion projecting beyond the rotationally symmetrical hollow body.
These through openings also reduce the material requirement for the stem as well as its weight.
An advantageous further development is that the flange has through openings in its portion projecting beyond the rotationally symmetrical hollow body and recesses in the remaining portion.
This results in maximum material savings and weight reduction.
The invention also relates to an aerosol valve comprising a stem according to the invention.
The invention is explained in more detail below by means of examples of embodiments shown in the figures. The terms “upper” and “lower” refer to the flange as represented in the drawings.

Fig. 8a to
Fig. 8c show a side view, a cut, and a perspective view of a valve according to the invention. As shown in Fig. 1 a to 1 d, the stem for an aerosol valve according to the invention comprises a flange 1 at its lower end. The stem shown is a tilting stem.
Adjacent to the flange 1 is a rotationally symmetrical hollow body 2 with a smaller diameter than that of the flange 1 , which has at least one radial inlet opening 3, in the present case four inlet openings 3, at its end facing the flange 1 and an axial outlet opening 4 at its upper end facing away from the flange 1 . Furthermore, the stem has a retaining edge 5 which serves for rear-engaging fastening of the stem in the passage of a valve body. A thread 6 is adjacent to this retaining edge 5, which is used to attach a product dispensing device to the stem. It can be seen from Fig. 1 b that the inner channel has a parabolic shape at its lower end. The parabolic shape of the inner channel of the hollow stem confers a higher rigidity to the stem. The bending and mainly the tensile/compression forces which act on the stem while the using the valve or due to unintentional force on the exposed stem are better distributed and can be introduced in the cylindrical housing of the stem by the parabolic shape of the lower end of the inner channel.
The flange 1 has a first portion 1 a with a first diameter and a second portion 1 b with a second diameter, the first portion 1 a being arranged at the lower end of the flange and the second portion 1 b being arranged at the side of the flange 1 facing the rotationally symmetrical hollow body 2.
As can be seen from the figures, the diameter of the second portion reduces continuously from the diameter of the first portion 1 a towards the rotationally symmetrical hollow body 2. The flange 1 thus has a slope in its second portion 1 b towards its upper side, the angle of the slopes to the rotation axis of the stem being between 30 and 60°. In the present case, it is of about 45°.
This linear reduction in diameter across the width of the second portion 1 b results in a smooth opening process. It also saves material and reduces the weight of the stem.
Furthermore, it can be seen from the figures that the flange 1 has recesses 7 in its portion projecting beyond the rotationally symmetrical hollow body 2, which are evenly distributed over the radius of the flange 1 . These lead to further material savings and weight reduction.
Figs. 2a to 7d show other alternatives of stems which only differ from the stem of Figs. 1 a to 1 d in that the second portion 1 b of the flange 1 has a different shape.
Figs. 2a to 2d show a flange 1 the second portion 1 b of which is of convex shape. There is a radius extending from the end of the first portion 1a of the flange 1 to the upper side of the flange 1 .
Figs. 3a to 3d show a flange 1 the second portion 1 b of which is of a different convex shape.
Figs. 4a to 4d show a flange 1 the second portion 1 b of which is of a step-like shape. The second portion 1 b of the stem consists of subsequent steps of decreasing diameter starting from the first portion 1a of the flange 1 towards the upper end of the stem.
Figs. 5a to 5d show a flange 1 the second portion 1b of which is of concave shape.
Figs. 6a to 6d show a flange 1 the second portion 1b of which is of more pronounced concave shape than Figs. 5a to 5d.
Figs. 7a to 7d show a flange 1 with a slope of about 45° at the outer edge. The adjoining upper inner area of the flange 1 has a radius-shaped circular recess 8 over its entire width.
Fig. 8a to 8c show an aerosol valve 8 according to the invention. The aerosol valve 8 can be arranged in an opening of an aerosol container,
The aerosol valve 8 comprises a tilting stem with a flange 1 at its lower end and a grommet 9 inserted into a valve cup 10. The lower surface of the grommet 9 facing the stem is flat and smooth. Furthermore, the stem has a retaining edge 5 which serves for rear-engaging fastening of the stem to the grommet 9 in the passage of the valve cup 10. A thread 6 is adjacent to this retaining edge 5, which is used to attach a product dispensing device to the stem. It can be seen from Fig. 8b that the inner channel has a parabolic shape at its lower end. The parabolic shape of the inner channel of the hollow stem confers a higher rigidity to the stem. The bending and mainly the tensile/compression forces which act on the stem while the use of the valve or due to unintentional forces on the exposed stem are better distributed and can be introduced in the cylindrical housing of the stem by the parabolic shape of the lower end of the inner channel.
As an advantage, the flange 1 with the first portion 1 a and the second portion 1 b forms a ramp. The ramp facilitates the tilting opening of the stem. This linear reduction in diameter over the width of the second portion 1 b results in a smooth opening process. It also saves material and reduces the weight of the stem. The flange 1 can have recesses 7 in its portion projecting beyond the rotationally symmetrical hollow body 2, which are evenly distributed over the radius of the flange 1 . This can lead to further material savings and weight reduction.
Alternatively, the second portion 1 b of the flange 1 can have a different shape. The second portion 1 b can be of convex shape with a radius extending from the end of the first portion 1 a of the flange 1 to the upper side of the flange 1 . The second portion 1 b can also be of a step-like shape with subsequent steps of decreasing diameter starting from the first portion 1a of the flange 1a towards the upper end of the stem. The second portion can also be of concave shape. Finally, the flange 1 can have a slope of about 45° at the outer edge with the adjoining upper inner area of the flange 1 having a radius-shaped circular recess 8 over its entire width.
