Description

DEVICE FOR THE APPLICATION OF INSERTS.
TECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a device for the application of inserts. Inserts are preferably, but not limited to, screws, nails or rivets, more preferably screws.
DESCRIPTION OF THE STATE OF THE ART
The use of devices for the application of inserts, such as screws, nails or rivets, which allow to ease the operations required to the operator, is well known. Known-type devices can be both manual devices and devices suited to be associated with automatic machines. Such devices can be successfully applied in particular when inserts need to be placed very precisely and especially in hard-to- reach places and with poor visibility. In the field of devices for the application of inserts, a first type of automatic screwdriver comprising a cylinder, within which a working piston and a position piston slide, is known. The working piston is associated with a tool intended to act on a screw that is to be screwed, wherein this screw is placed on an insert-holding accessory positioned in front of the cylinder. In a step of positioning the screw, the position piston is held fixed so as to act as a stop for the working piston, which is pneumatically pushed towards the screw so as to position it “at sight”, i.e. with the tip outside the insert-holding accessory. In a second step, the position piston is free to slide and no longer represents an obstacle for the working piston, which can continue its stroke to eject the screw from the insert-holding accessory and screw it into its final seat. Both pistons are pushed back to a position that is suited to load a subsequent screw by pressurising a return chamber located between the insert-holding accessory and the position piston.
A second type of known pneumatic screwdriver comprises a position piston and a working piston placed in two separate chambers of a cylinder. Initially, the position piston pushes the working piston into the position with the screw at sight. Then only the working piston completes its stroke to screw the screw. In this case, the pistons are pushed back into a position suited to load a subsequent screw by pressurising a return chamber placed between the insert-holding accessory and the working piston.
As will be seen, although in the two known screwdrivers the position of the working piston and the position piston is reversed, in both of them it is necessary to have available a return chamber in a front area of the screwdriver. This means that the supply ducts of said return chamber also have to be fitted or made in the front area, which makes the device much more complicated and uncomfortable to use, especially manually. In some cases the insert-holding accessory is shaped to fit close to the ducts, in other cases the device is longer so that the accessory is far from the ducts. As a result, the known solutions are not able to ensure precision and ease of use, as, due to the presence of the ducts, they do not allow narrow places to be reached, or require a very steady hand due to the length of the device, or they more generally obstruct the view of the front area and make it hard to see where the screw is being positioned.
In the known solutions, furthermore, rotating seals are used to ensure the tightness of the pressurised chambers and the sliding of the piston(s) within the cylinder(s). The use of rotating seals causes high friction, resulting in a loss of precision of the screwdriver.
The main object of the present invention is therefore to solve at least part of the problems posed by known solutions.
In particular, an object of the present invention is to provide a device for the application of inserts that ensures a more precise positioning and a more convenient use than the prior art.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a device for the application of inserts that is also suited to be used in narrow spaces.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a device for the application of inserts that ensures higher accuracy than known-type systems.
SUMMARY OF THE PRESENT INVENTION
The present invention, in a first aspect thereof, thus relates to a device for the application of inserts made according to claim 1.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS OF THE PRESENT INVENTION Although the present invention is described with reference to the embodiments represented in the drawings, the present invention is not limited thereto. On the contrary, the embodiments described and represented herein clarify certain aspects of the present invention, the scope of which is defined in the claims.
The present invention has proven to be particularly advantageous when applied to a device for the insertion of screws, hereinafter referred to as a screwdriver for brevity. For this reason, and for ease of description, reference will be made hereinafter to the embodiment relevant to the specific field of screwdrivers. However, it should be pointed out that the present invention may also constitute a device for the application of other types of inserts, such as nails or rivets.
Hereinafter, with reference to Figures 1 and 2, a screwdriver of the type that can be made by means of the present invention is described.
The device for the application of inserts 1 is a screwdriver 1 comprising a hollow cylinder 5 with a front end 10 intended in use to face the insert and a rear end 15. In the embodiment shown and described, the hollow cylinder 5 preferably comprises a cover suited to ease grabbing the device 1.
A position piston 20 and a working piston 25, whose function will be better explained later, slide in the cylinder 5. The position piston 20 and working piston 25 slide into a front chamber 26 and a rear chamber 27 of the cylinder 5, respectively. The position piston 20 is closer to the front end 10 than the working piston 25. The front chamber 26 has a larger bore than the rear chamber 27. The working piston 25 supports a tool 28 with a shape corresponding to the shape of the insert on which it is intended to act - in this case a screwdriver. The tool 28 is moved by the working piston 25 to and from the front end 10. Preferably, but not necessarily, the working piston 25 supports the tool 28 through the interposition of a rolling unit 29 comprising a tool holder shaft 30 and bearings 31 which allow the shaft 30 to rotate freely with respect to the working piston 25. The tool holder shaft 30 is set rotating by a motor unit (not shown) preferably but not necessarily external to the device 1. The tool holder shaft 30 is connected to the motor unit by means of a pivot 32, provided with a shank 32a. The pivot 32 is configured to slide telescopically with respect to the tool holder shaft 30 and at the same time has a shape suited to couple with it so as to set it rotating, for example a pivot 32 with a square cross-section.
The tool 28 is coupled with the tool holder shaft 30 preferably by means of coupling means that allow transmitting the rotation to the tool 28. The coupling means comprise known-type systems, e.g. plug-in means or a spindle. However, this does not exclude cases wherein the tool cannot be removed from the tool holder shaft, i.e. it is obtained in a single piece with the tool holder shaft.
The working piston 25 divides the rear chamber 27 into a return chamber 40 and a first neutral chamber 35 respectively. The return chamber 40 is pressurised or discharged by means of a respective return duct 42. The first neutral chamber 35 is not connected to any duct and therefore exerts no action on the working piston 35.
The position piston 20 divides the front chamber 26 into a position chamber 45 and a second neutral chamber 50 respectively. The position chamber 45 is pressurised or discharged by means of a respective position duct 46, while the second neutral chamber 50 is not connected to any duct and therefore exerts no action on the position piston 20. The return chamber 40 and the position chamber 45 are preferably supplied with compressed air carried by the respective supply ducts 42, 46. Alternatively, other embodiments are provided wherein the supply is carried out by means of pressurised oil.
In the embodiment shown in Figure 2, the working piston 25 and the position piston 20 are telescopically connected to each other, in particular the working piston 25 is able to slide at least partially inside the position piston 20 and translate over a predetermined stroke.
Preferably, the position piston 20 is shaped to enclose an intermediate chamber 80 suited to receive at least partially therein a portion of the working piston 25, as described hereinafter.
The working piston 25 comprises a first enlarged head 55 sliding into the rear chamber 27 and a second enlarged head 82 sliding into the intermediate chamber 80. A cylindrical collar 56 joins the first enlarged head 55 to the second enlarged head 82 and extends from the first enlarged head 55 towards the front end 10 of the cylinder 5.
The second enlarged head 82 divides the intermediate chamber 80 into an intermediate position chamber 86 and a third neutral chamber 88 respectively. A way 87 puts in communication the intermediate position chamber 86 to the position chamber 45.
The first enlarged head 55 defines a respective active surface 21 on which the pressurised air of the return chamber 40 acts.
The second enlarged head 82 defines a respective active surface 19a on which the pressurised air of the intermediate position chamber 86 acts.
A first stop element 58, better visible in Figure 3 A, is defined at the second enlarged head 82 and is suited to provide a stop for the piston position 20 in the direction of the front end 10 of the cylinder 5.
The position piston 20 preferably comprises a hollow cylindrical shape, sliding in the front chamber 26, which defines said intermediate chamber 80. The position piston 20 in the direction of the rear end 15 comprises a head portion 60 wherein an opening 90 suited to receive the working piston 25 and to define said way of communication 87 is defined.
The head portion 60 defines a respective active surface 19b on which the pressurised air of the position chamber 45 acts.
The sum of the active surface 19b of the head portion 60 of the position piston 20 and the active surface 19a of the second head portion 82 of the working piston 25 is greater than the active surface 21 of the first enlarged head 55 of the working piston 25, whose effect will be better described hereinafter.
A second stop element 63, suited to provide a stop point for the working piston 25 in the direction of the rear end 15 of the cylinder 5, is defined in the head portion 60 of the position piston 20.
It will be observed that the first stop element 58 is placed between the second enlarged head 82 and the first enlarged head 55 of the working piston 25, while the second stop element 63 is placed between the first stop element 58 and the first enlarged head 55 of the working piston 25. Thereby, when the working piston 25 moves away from the position piston 20 during the telescopic sliding movement, the two stop elements 58 and 63 abut against each other, determining a telescopic stroke of a predetermined length. The person skilled in the art will easily understand that the sequence of elements proposed so far can easily be modified, e.g. reversed, without affecting the functionality of the device.
An insert-holding accessory 70 is preferably associated with the screwdriver 1. The insert-holding accessory 70 is preferably removably connectable to the cylinder 5 of the screwdriver 1, more preferably removably connectable to the cylinder 5, e.g. by means of a plug-in or screwing mechanism or equivalent mechanisms.
The insert-holding accessory 70 comprises, for example, an insert supply duct 72 and a push duct 74 communicating with each other. The tool 28 is capable of penetrating into the push duct 74 to push an insert 76 towards an outlet opening 75, at least partially obstructed by a holding device 78, such as a perforated elastic sleeve or a pair of movable lips exerting friction on the insert 76 or a tube with spring steel notches that deform as the insert 76 passes through and lock it in place or one or more balls held by an O-ring.
With reference to Figures 3, 4 and 5, a possible operating cycle of the device 1 in Figure 2 will now be described.
In particular, it is observed that the supply ducts 42 and 46 are connected to a valve system and to possible pressure compensation systems and/or flow regulators, not illustrated herein, operated manually or automatically to obtain the filling or discharge of the respective chambers 40, 45 and thus the movement of the pistons 20, 25.
Figure 3 shows a step of loading an insert 76. In this step the tool 28 is in a fully retracted position in the push duct 74, so as to avoid obstructing the supply duct 72 through which the insert 76 is inserted according to arrow I. In order to bring and hold the tool 28 in this position the only chamber to be pressurised is the return chamber 40. The working piston 25 is thereby pushed back towards the rear end 15 of the cylinder 5, i.e. it is brought into the position where it is furthest from the front end 10 of the cylinder 5. In addition, the working piston 25 also moves the position piston 20 backwards due to the action of the stop elements 58 and 63, as shown in Figure 3 A.
Figure 4 shows the step wherein the working piston 25 is moved to a position wherein the insert 76 is visible, i.e. it partially projects from the insert-holding accessory 70. In this step the return chamber 40 is kept pressurised while the position chamber 45 is also pressurised by means of the respective position duct 46.
The position piston 20 then moves towards the front end 10 of the cylinder 5, taking with it the working piston 25 due to the action of the stop elements 58 and 63 and exploiting the difference in forces generated between the different surfaces concerned by the pistons 20, 25 under the same pressure conditions, i.e. due to the fact that the sum of the active surface 19b of the head portion 60 of the position piston 20 and the active surface 19a of the second head portion 82 of the working piston 25 is greater than the active surface 21 of the first enlarged head 55 of the working piston 25. During this step, therefore, the working piston 25 slides into the cylinder 5 over a first stroke portion together with the position piston 20. The stroke of the position piston 20 is lower than the total stroke of the working piston 25.
When the position piston 20 ends its stroke, the working piston 25 is unable to advance further, unless the pressure in the return chamber 40 is removed. The position piston 20 thereby “positions” the working piston 25 at a predetermined intermediate position between its closest position and its furthest position from the front end 10 of the cylinder 5. In this position, the tool 28 is operatively active on the insert 76 to keep a part thereof inside the holding device 78 and a part thereof outside, so as to be seen by an operator. The visible insert 76 can thus advantageously be used as a support for the tool and to prevent any contact between the holding device 78 and the possibly delicate surface of a piece, in addition to facilitating opening the device 78. Advantageously, it also helps to fit into a hole or to align a metal sheet that is slightly offset from the underlying hole where the insert 76 is to be screwed.
Figure 5 shows an advancement step of the insert 76 wherein the tool 28 is operatively active to eject the insert 76 from the holding device 78. To perform this operation, the return chamber 40 is discharged by means of the respective return duct 42, while the position chamber 45 is kept pressurised. At the same time, the intermediate position chamber 86 is also pressurised by the air coming from the position chamber 45 through the way of communication 87. In this way, the working piston 25 is able to advance further towards the front end 10 of the cylinder 5, thus covering the final portion of its stroke.
During this step, therefore, only the working piston 25 slides in the cylinder 5 for a second stroke portion, while the position piston 20 remains stationary.
It will be observed that in the case of a screwdriver, it is necessary that at least during the advancement step, to reach the end position in Figure 5, the motor unit (not shown) sets the tool 28 rotating in order to screw the screw 76.
Once the screwing operation has been completed and in order to return the screwing device 1 to its initial configuration, i.e. the one shown in Figure 3, the return chamber 40 is pressurised through the return duct 42 while the position chamber 45 and, consequently, the intermediate position chamber 86 are discharged by means of the position duct 46.
From the foregoing description, it can be inferred that the solution according to the invention allows to avoid the use of rotating seals, as is the case with systems of the known type, thereby significantly reducing the friction generated by the seals themselves and thus ensuring a higher accuracy of the device 1.
Figure 6 represents the manual operation of the device 1 in Figure 1. In particular, it is shown that the cylinder 5 can be used as a handle in which the parts of the supply ducts 42 and 46 leaving the cylinder 5 to be possibly connected to an external source of compressed air or pressurised oil remain between the operator's hand M and the rear end 15 of the cylinder 5. In this way, any ducts or external supply elements (not shown) do not hide the view of the insert 76, do not affect the shape of the insert-holding accessory 70 and the length of the device 1, do not fatigue the operator's arm, and do not prevent access of the accessory 70 to narrow places.
As mentioned above, Figure 6 represents the manual use of the device 1 of the invention. In embodiment variants, the device of the invention can be used in robot and machine applications, for example by attaching the device to said robots and/or machines with special clamps.
With reference to Figure 7, a device 101 according to a preferred embodiment variant of the invention is shown. The component parts equivalent to the first preferred embodiment described with reference to Figures 1 to 6 are identified by the same reference numbers.
Figure 7 shows an alternative device for the application of inserts 101 which differs from the one previously described mainly in that the tool 28 is set rotating by means of a screwing unit 185 which itself defines the working piston 25 movable within the cylinder 5.
The screwing unit 185 preferably comprises a pneumatic or electric unit.
Preferably, a power supply and/or communication system 190 is associated with the screwing unit 185 to power supply the screwing unit 185, in particular a motor of the screwing unit 185. The supply and/or communication system 190 preferably comprises elastic spiral elements, e.g. rubber hoses or spiral cables.
The screwing unit 185 preferably comprises a telescopic anti-rotation transmission 195 to counteract the reaction torque generated while screwing.
Advantageously, this embodiment allows the device to be compacted by enclosing the screwing unit therein, making it possible to easily use the device even in narrow places.
It has therefore been demonstrated by means of the present description that the device according to the present invention achieves the intended objects. In particular, the present invention proposes a device for the application of inserts that ensures a more precise positioning and more comfortable use than the prior art.
While the present invention has been described with reference to particular embodiments represented in the figures, it should be noted that the present invention is not limited to the particular embodiments represented and described; on the contrary, further variants of the described embodiments fall within the scope of the present invention, which scope is defined by the claims.
