Description

  • This invention is in the field of temporary flooring solutions specifically designed for military vehicles, helicopters, airplanes and the like. This includes modular flooring systems capable of supporting the operational requirements of military vehicles, helicopters, and airplanes in diverse and often demanding environments.
  • In particular, the present invention relates to a flooring assembly, temporary flooring, a tensile structure assembly and a method for installing temporary flooring.
  • Known in the art are various types of temporary and modular flooring solutions aimed at meeting the critical needs of military operations. These systems are designed to provide rapid implementation and reconfiguration flexibility thereby allowing for the establishment of operating bases, airstrips, and vehicle tracks in areas where traditional paved infrastructure is non-existent or compromised. The importance of these solutions lies in their ability to extend the operational reach of military forces, ensuring mobility and the effective deployment of resources in remote or conflict-affected regions.
  • Known modular flooring systems typically consist of interlocking components that may be quickly assembled and disassembled. These components are designed to support the weight and movement of military vehicles and heavy airplanes, including tanks, armored troop transports, helicopters, and transport airplanes. The adaptability of such systems is crucial for operations in various geographic and climatic conditions, ranging from desert sands to Arctic tundra.
  • Notwithstanding the advantages offered by existing modular flooring systems, significant shortcomings have been identified, in particular with regard to their installation on irregular terrain. One of the main challenges lies in the need for a solid concrete base as a prerequisite for the stable anchoring of said modular elements. This requirement poses several problems in relation to the demand for large resources and the long periods of time necessary in order to establish such a basis. The preparation of a concrete foundation involves multiple steps including a site survey, leveling of the ground, and the actual construction of the concrete layer, each of which adds to the complexity and duration of the construction process.
  • Furthermore, a concrete base is further determining factor where a large tensile structure that is capable of also accommodating airplanes, helicopters, and military vehicles in general is also installed on the modular flooring. Such tensile structure is in fact subject to tensile and compression loads due to atmospheric agents such as water, wind, snow and hail. Without a solid base for anchoring, such tensile structures risk being severely damaged or dragged by the wind.
  • The need for a concrete base substantially reduces the intrinsic advantages of modular flooring systems, i.e. their rapid implementation and flexibility. In scenarios where time is essential, such as in the rapid response to natural disasters or conflict zones, extended configuration timescales may significantly hamper operational efficiency and effectiveness. Furthermore, the logistics involved in transporting and preparing the necessary concrete materials to remote or inaccessible areas further exacerbate the challenge, often making the implementation of temporary modular flooring systems impractical under certain circumstances.
  • Furthermore, the environmental impact associated with the construction of concrete bases cannot be neglected. The production and transportation of concrete contribute to carbon emissions, while the construction process itself may lead to an alteration to the landscape and potential damage to local ecosystems. These environmental considerations are increasingly relevant in military operations, reflecting a growing awareness and commitment to environmental protection within defense activities.
  • In light of the aforementioned shortcomings of prior art modular flooring systems, in particular their dependence upon concrete bases for installation on irregular terrain, there is a clear need to overcome such shortcomings.
  • One of the objects of the present invention is to eliminate the need for a solid concrete base, thus improving the operational flexibility, deployment speed, and environmental sustainability of temporary flooring solutions for military vehicles and airplanes.
  • This aim underlines an urgent need in the field to develop a modular flooring system that may be installed directly on a variety of soil conditions without the extended preparatory work currently required, while ensuring adequate flooring installation solidity and reliability conditions over time, even where a tensile structure is installed.
  • The aforesaid objects are achieved using a flooring assembly, temporary flooring, a tensile structure assembly and a flooring installation method according to the appended independent claims. The dependent claims describe preferred or advantageous embodiments.
  • The features and advantages of the flooring assembly, temporary flooring, tensile structure assembly and flooring installation method according to the invention shall be made readily apparent from the following description of preferred example embodiments thereof, provided purely by way of non-limiting example, with reference to the accompanying figures, wherein:
    • Figure 1 is an axonometric view of a tensile structure assembly according to one embodiment of the present invention;
    • Figure 2 is a plan view from above of the tensile structure assembly in Figure 1, wherein the cover of the tensile structure is shown semi-transparently such that the underlying temporary flooring is visible;
    • Figure 3 is an axonometric view of a flooring assembly according to one embodiment of the present invention, particularly in the vicinity of a strut of a tensile structure, wherein a first modular flooring element and a second modular flooring element are shown semi-transparently such that internally housed reinforcing bars are visible;
    • Figure 4 is an axonometric view of a flooring assembly according to one embodiment of the present invention, particularly in the vicinity of a upright of a tensile structure, wherein a first modular flooring element and a second modular flooring element are shown semi-transparently such that internally housed reinforcing bars are visible;
    • Figures 5, 5a and 5b each show a cross-sectional view of a modular flooring element according to a respective embodiment of the present invention, which may be obtained either as a first modular flooring element, or as a second modular flooring element, or as an additional modular flooring element;
    • Figure 6 shows an exploded axonometric view of temporary flooring that is being installed, according to one embodiment of the present invention;
    • Figure 7 shows a partial axonometric view of a tensile structure assembly according to one embodiment of the present invention, wherein the step of installing ballasts on a perimeter portion of the temporary flooring is shown.
  • With reference to the aforesaid figures, a tensile structure, preferably a field tensile structure, has been globally indicated with the reference numeral 100.
  • It is apparent that a field tensile structure refers to any tent suitable for use in the military or civil defense for the construction of temporary hospitals or temporary shelter as personnel housing or as a command center, meeting room, field office, recreational tent for club or meeting, or laundry.
  • As best appreciated in Figure 1, the tensile structure 100 comprises a roof 101 supported by a plurality of arch frames 102, 103 extending vertically for a predefined height H relative to a temporary support flooring P. The arch frames 102, 103 are arranged at a distance from each other along an extension direction K lying on the temporary support flooring P.
  • Each arch frame 102, 103 preferably comprises metallic profiles 1, joined together by means of assembly elements, i.e., joints.
  • Furthermore, one or more arch frames 102, 103 (or all of the arch frames) are connected to respective uprights 4 and/or struts 4', the latter then being connected to the temporary flooring P in order to unload the burdening tensile or compression loads onto the temporary flooring P.
  • One aspect of the present invention is in relation to a flooring assembly 1 that is suitable for being arranged on a ground G to form, together with additional modular flooring elements 7, temporary flooring P that is suitable for supporting a tensile structure 100 and vehicles, for example airplanes, helicopters, trucks and the like.
  • Such temporary flooring P may be understood to be a collective system of modular flooring elements that may be coupled together and that are designed to temporarily cover a surface or area, thereby providing a stable and durable platform for various uses including the accommodation of temporary structures and the moving or parking vehicles.
  • Modular flooring elements are also known to a person skilled in the art as pierced steel plankings. Such modular pierced steel plankings are known to a person skilled in the art and will not therefore be described further.
  • Such flooring assembly 1 comprises a first modular flooring element 2 and an adjacent second modular flooring element 2' joined to each other in a removable manner along a longitudinal direction L parallel to the ground G to form part of the temporary flooring P.
  • The flooring assembly 1 also comprises an anchoring device 3 comprising a support base 31 fixed to the first modular flooring element 2 and/or to the second modular flooring element 2' and suitable for receiving an upright 4 or a strut 4' of a tensile structure 100 to distribute the load of the tensile structure 100 on the first modular flooring element 2 and/or on the second modular flooring element 2'.
  • This configuration allows the stress and weight from the tensile structure to be effectively distributed over a larger area of the temporary flooring P thereby minimizing the risk of penetration into the ground or damage under heavy loads. The presence of the support base together with the modular elements ensures that the anchoring elements are further fixed to the ground due to the loads acting upon the uprights and upon the props. This feature improves the stability and reliability of the temporary flooring P under various load conditions.
  • The anchoring device 3 comprises one or more anchoring elements 5, for example pins or nails or screws, suitable for anchoring the support base 31 in the ground G.
  • The support base preferably comprises base through openings 312 that are suitable for being crossed, in a through manner, by one or more anchoring elements 5.
  • The one or more anchoring elements 5 are preferably pins or nails or screws which, in addition to anchoring the support base 31, fix said support base to the first modular flooring element 2 and/or to the second modular flooring element 2'.
  • According to one embodiment, the one or more anchoring elements 5 are pins or nails or screws, which cross, in a through manner, the support base 31 and the first modular flooring element 2.
  • According to one embodiment, the one or more anchoring elements 5 are pins or nails or screws, which cross, in a through manner, the support base 31, the first modular flooring element 2, and the second modular flooring element 2'.
  • Due to the fact that the anchoring elements 5 cross, in a through manner, both the support base 31 and the first modular flooring element 2 and/or the second modular flooring element 2', the speed of the installation step is increased and loads are adequately distributed from the support base towards the modular flooring elements and thus towards the ground G.
  • The first modular flooring element 2 and/or the second modular flooring element 2' preferably comprise element through openings 212, suitable for being crossed, in a through manner, by one or more anchoring elements 5.
  • In particular, preferably, each base through opening 312, together with a respective element through opening 212, are arranged in such a way as to be aligned (for example coaxial) with each other along a direction perpendicular to the support base 3 when the flooring assembly 1 is installed on the ground G. In this way, during the installation of the flooring assembly on the ground G, the insertion of the anchoring elements 5 is facilitated.
  • The anchoring elements 5 preferably have a length that is such to allow for penetration of the ground by at least eighty centimeters, preferably at least one hundred centimeters, even more preferably at least one hundred and twenty centimeters. Such penetration is measured from a lower side 29 of the first modular flooring element 2 or of the second modular flooring element 2', that is intended to come into contact with the ground G. The anchoring elements therefore have an overall length of at least eighty centimeters or greater, preferably at least equal to or greater than one hundred centimeters or even more preferably equal to or greater than one hundred and twenty centimeters.
  • According to one embodiment, the support base 31 comprises a base plate 310 resting on both the first modular flooring element 2 and the second modular flooring element 2' along a lower side 310' thereof. The base through openings are preferably obtained upon said base plate 310.
  • According to one embodiment, the support base 31 comprises a connection element 311 extending from the base plate 310 on the opposite side 310" with respect to the lower side 310' in a direction incident to the ground G. Said connection element 311 is suitable for being joined (or is joined) to the upright 4 or to the strut 4'.
  • According to one embodiment, such connection element is a hinge which is particularly useful in the case of being joined to a respective inclined strut 4'.
  • According to one embodiment, for example illustrated in Figures 5, 5a, 5b, the first modular flooring element 2 and/or the second modular flooring element 2' are each a board-shaped metal section bar having longitudinal internal cavities 21, 22, 23, 24 mainly extending in the longitudinal direction L.
  • Preferably, the first modular flooring element 2 and/or the second modular flooring element 2' are each a board-shaped metal section bar mainly extending along the longitudinal direction L.
  • According to one embodiment, the flooring assembly 1 comprises one or more reinforcing bars 26, 27, preferably made of a metallic material, each inserted into one of the longitudinal inner cavities 21, 24, respectively, so as to be at least partially or mainly arranged below the support base 31. This makes it possible to reinforce the resistance to mechanical stresses of the modular flooring elements underneath the support base 31. The reinforcing bars 26, 27 are preferably made of a material that is different from the material with which the first modular flooring element 2 and the second modular flooring element 2' are made, the reinforcing bars are preferably made of a material that is mechanically stronger than the material of the first modular flooring element 2 and/or the second modular flooring element 2'.
  • For example, the first modular flooring element 2 and the second modular flooring element 2' are made of aluminum.
  • For example, the reinforcing bars 26, 27 are made of steel.
  • The one or more anchoring elements 5 preferably also cross each metal reinforcing bar 26, 27 in a through manner.
  • Preferably, one or more reinforcing bars 26, 27 comprise bar through openings 272 that are suitable for being crossed, in a through manner, by one or more anchoring elements 5.
  • In particular, preferably, each base through opening 312, together with a respective element through opening 212 and with a respective bar through opening 272, are positioned in such a way as to be aligned (for example coaxial) with each other along a direction perpendicular to the support base 3 when the flooring assembly 1 is installed on the ground G. In this way, during the installation of the flooring assembly on the ground G, the insertion of the anchoring elements 5, in a through manner, is facilitated.
  • According to one embodiment, the flooring assembly 1 comprises a connection bar 6, distinct from the support base 3 and fixed to the first modular flooring element 2 and to the second modular flooring element 2'. Such connection bar 6 allows the first modular flooring element 2 to be further constrained to the second modular flooring element in order to prevent the separation thereof along a transverse direction T perpendicular to the longitudinal direction L.
  • Such connection bar 6 is for example fixed on an upper side 29' of each of the first modular flooring elements 2 and of the second modular flooring element 2', opposite the lower side 29 which is intended to come into contact with the ground G.
  • According to one embodiment, the first modular flooring element 2 comprises a longitudinal protrusion 14 and the second modular flooring element 2' comprises a longitudinal recess 16. In one ground G installation configuration of the first 2 and of the second modular flooring elements 2', the longitudinal protrusion 14 is inserted into the longitudinal recess and counteracts the separation actions of the first modular flooring element 2 with respect to the second modular flooring element 2'. In a rotated configuration of the first modular flooring element 2 with respect to the second modular flooring element 2' about the longitudinal direction L, the longitudinal protrusion 14 is insertable into or separable from the longitudinal recess 16 for separating or coupling the first modular flooring element 2 from/to the second modular flooring element 2'. This facilitates the operations for mounting the modular flooring elements.
  • The present invention also relates to a system of structural assemblies, for example shown in Figures 1, 2, 6 and 7, comprising a first flooring assembly 1 connected to a strut 4' and a second flooring assembly connected to an upright 4 of a tensile structure 100, wherein the first modular flooring element 2 and the second modular flooring element 2' of the first flooring assembly 1 are each a
    board-shaped metal section bar extending mainly along the longitudinal direction L and are arranged in such a way that the longitudinal extension direction L thereof is perpendicular to the extension direction K wherealong they are arranged distally the arch frames 102, 103 of the tensile structure lying on the temporary support flooring P are spaced apart. Furthermore, the projection of the strut 4' also lies mainly along the longitudinal extension direction L, so as to create a structural triangle between the strut 4', upright 4 and the first modular flooring element 2 and the second modular flooring element 2', capable of adequately supporting the loads weighing on the tensile structure and distributing these loads on the temporary flooring P.
  • According to one embodiment, for example in conjunction with the arrangement of the first modular flooring assembly 1 described in the preceding paragraph, the first modular flooring element 2 and the second modular flooring element 2' of the second flooring assembly 1 are each a board-shaped metal section bar that extends mainly along the longitudinal direction L and are arranged in such a way that the longitudinal extension direction L of each is parallel to the extension direction K wherealong the arch frames 102, 103 of the tensile structure lying on the temporary support flooring P are spaced apart.
  • It is clear that a temporary flooring P arranged on the ground G and suitable for supporting a tensile structure 100 and vehicles, for example airplanes, helicopters, trucks and the like, is also an object of the present invention. Such temporary flooring P comprises flooring assemblies 1 according to any one of the embodiments described in this document. Such flooring assemblies are anchored to the ground G by means of the respective anchoring device 3 and the additional modular flooring elements 7 are connected to one another and connected to the flooring assemblies 1 in such a way as to form a complete temporary flooring P.
  • According to one embodiment, the additional modular flooring elements 7 each comprise an longitudinal protrusion 14 of additional modular element and/or an longitudinal recess 16 of additional modular element equal to the longitudinal protrusion 14 and/or the longitudinal recess 16 of the first 2 and of the second modular flooring element 2' as described in the preceding paragraphs, respectively. This therefore allows for easy coupling between the elements to be maintained.
  • Also an object per sé of the present invention is that of providing a tensile structure assembly 200 comprising a tensile structure 100 provided with a roof 101 supported by arch frames 102, 103 connected to respective uprights 4 and/or struts 4' and temporary flooring P according to any of the embodiments described in the preceding paragraphs and within the present document. In this tensile structure assembly 200, the uprights 4 and/or struts 4' are connected to respective support bases 31 of respective flooring assemblies 1 according to any one of the embodiments described within this document.
  • It is clear that according to one embodiment, several systems of structural assemblies together with the tensile structure 100 and temporary flooring P form a tensile structure assembly 200, which is also the object of the present invention.
  • According to one embodiment, one or more ballasts 300, for example containers or cages or receptacles containing filler material, such as inert material, liquids or debris, are positioned on the temporary flooring P, in the peripheral region 110 of the flooring P arranged outside the tensile structure 100.
  • The one or more ballasts 300 are preferably arranged in the gap I between two adjacent struts 4.
  • It is clear that a method for installing temporary flooring according to any one of the embodiments described in this document is also an object of the present invention. Such method comprises the following steps:
    • laying flooring assemblies 1 directly on the ground G according to any one of the embodiments described within this document and additional modular flooring elements 7;
    • connecting the additional modular flooring elements 7 to one another and connecting some of the additional modular flooring elements 7 to one or more of the flooring assemblies 1;
    • fixing the anchoring device 3 of each of the flooring assemblies to the ground G by directly inserting one or more anchoring elements 5 into the ground, said ground G having no concrete base at least at said one or more anchoring elements 5.
  • Preferably, the method also comprises the step of positioning one or more ballasts 300, for example containers or cages or receptacles containing filler material, on a peripheral region 110 of the flooring P arranged outside the tensile structure 100.
  • Innovatively, the flooring assembly according to this invention make it possible to solve the drawbacks associated with the prior art.
  • In particular, by virtue of the synergistic presence of modular flooring elements together with the support base and the ground anchoring elements, which are suitable for being easily inserted into the ground instead of concrete, the flexibility regarding the installation and disassembly process of the temporary flooring has been greatly increased, while ensuring rapid adaptability to various ground conditions and to the requirements of the different sites, facilitating rapid distribution and reconfiguration of the flooring as needed. This configuration significantly reduces the time and effort required for installation, allowing for efficient use of resources and labor.
  • Therefore, the creation of robust, safe and reliable temporary surfaces, capable of supporting the operational requirements of tensile structures and vehicles in a wide range of environments and operating conditions, becomes extremely advantageous.
  • Furthermore, the anchoring device which is suitable for receiving the upright and/or the strut of a tensile structure allows the function of anchoring and distributing the tensile structure load upon the modular flooring elements to be adequately performed. This effectively discharges the stress and weight from the tensile structure over a larger area of the flooring, minimizing the risk of soil penetration or damage under heavy loads. The presence of the support base together with the modular elements ensures that the anchoring elements are further fixed to the ground due to the loads acting upon the uprights and upon the props. This feature not only improves the stability and reliability of the temporary flooring under various load conditions, but also contributes to the safety and structural integrity of the tensile structure and vehicles it supports.
  • The anchoring device includes one or more anchoring elements, such as pins, nails or screws which are suitable for fixing the support base to the ground. The use of such anchoring elements provides an additional guarantee that the temporary flooring system remains firmly in position, even under adverse meteorological conditions or under significant operating loads. This detail ensures that the temporary flooring maintains the position and functionality thereof, offering a reliable and robust base for military and emergency operations where reliability is of utmost importance.
  • Advantageously, the fact that the anchoring elements cross, in a through manner, the support base and the first modular flooring element or else the support base, the first and second modular flooring elements, ensure even more uniform load distribution through the flooring, thereby mitigating the risk of failure or damage under high pressures, offering a significant advantage in terms of durability and structural integrity.
  • Furthermore, advantageously, the presence of a base plate and the connection element which is suitable for being joined to the upright or strut, allows easy integration of the tensile structure with the flooring thereby facilitating efficient distribution of loads from the structure to the flooring and vice versa and increasing the overall stability of the installation.
  • Advantageously, the presence of one or more metal reinforcing bars, each inserted into one of the inner cavities of the modular flooring element, improves the mechanical strength and load-bearing capacity of the flooring thereby allowing heavy loads to be supported without being deformed or damaged precisely at the point of the highest applied load.
  • The addition of a connection bar that is distinct from the support base and fixed to the first and second modular flooring elements, further strengthens the structural integrity of the flooring assembly, ensuring that it remains integral even under the action of lateral forces or unexpected loads.
  • A person skilled in the art may, in order to meet specific needs, make several changes or substitutions of elements with other functionally equivalent ones.
  • These variants are also contained within the scope of protection as defined by the following claims.
