Abstract

An insulator (10) for electrical fence and adapted to be inserted in a post comprises following contiguous parts: a head (12), a flange (14), a middle part and a tail end (16). All these contiguous parts comprise a central bore that extends throughout the insulator (10). The insulator (10) is characterized by the middle part having a distance keeper (15) to help positioning said insulator in the post. The distance keeper (15) protrudes laterally in comparison with the tail end. The flange (14) comprises restraining means (18) adapted to engage the insulator (10) in the post.

Title: INSULATOR FOR ELECTRICAL FENCE
Description Technical Field [0001] The invention relates to an insulator for electrical fence. The invention also relates to an assembly of a post and at least one insulator for electrical fence. Finally, the invention also relates to a method of assembling an insulator in post.
Background Art
[0002] In electrical fences, the wires or strands are sometimes held within the support post or support structures by means of insulator components which engage through the support post or support structure. This is particularly the case when the support post or support structures are in metal.
[0003] A disadvantage associated with a known system with posts having a single wall in the direction of the fence wire or strand, is that two components are necessary to engage with each other. A first component is located at one side of the post and a second component is located at another side of the post, which necessitates coordination between the two components at both sides of the post.
[0004] Another disadvantage associated with a known system is that the insulator is not always safely and rigidly fixed. Disclosure of Invention
[0005] It is a general object of the present invention to avoid the disadvantages of the prior art.
[0006] It is a particular object of the present invention to provide for a simple way of assembling an insulator with a post. [0007] It is another object of the present invention to provide an insulator that allows to rigidly fix it to a post. [0008] According to a first aspect of the present invention, there is provided an insulator for an electrical fence. The insulator is adapted to be inserted in a post. The insulator comprises following contiguous parts: a head, a flange, a middle part and a tail end. All these contiguous parts comprise a central bore that extends throughout the insulator to accommodate a wire or a strand.
[0009] The middle part has a distance keeper that helps to position the insulator in a post. The distance keeper protrudes laterally in comparison with the tail end. [0010] The flange comprises restraining means that are adapted to engage the insulator in the post.
[0011] The tail end preferably comprises longitudinal ribs with a longitudinal space between each rib. [0012] The insulator can be inserted at one side of the post. There is no need for a part to be positioned at the other side of the post.
[0013] Preferably the insulator is made of a single piece of electrically insulating material, such as a polymer, e.g. a UV-resistant polymer. [0014] Preferably, the flange has a cross-section with an elongated form.
[0015] As will be explained hereinafter, this elongated form allows the insulator to be inserted in the post opening and, after rotating, allows the insulator to engage with the post.
[0016] Most preferably, the flange forms a plane, called the flange plane. The restraining means of the flange protrude from the flange plane in the direction of the head.
[0017] Preferably, the restraining means are positioned at the end of the flange.
[0018] The restraining means engage with the wall of the post and finally fix the insulator safely and fixedly in the post.
[0019] In another preferable embodiment the head of the insulator has a form deviating from a round cylinder. The head preferably has planar side walls that facilitate gripping the head and rotating the head.
[0020] According to a second aspect of the invention, there is provided an assembly of a post and at least one insulator according to the first aspect of the invention.
[0021 ] The post has a single wall in the direction of the wire or strand. The post has a cross-section in substantially a U-form with an opening, called the post opening, extending along the length of the post.
[0022] The post has holes. At least one insulator is positioned in one of the holes.
[0023] In one embodiment the U-form of the post has legs that are bent inwardly at their ends over 90°. This allows forming an engagement with the restraining means of the insulator.
[0024] In another preferable embodiment, the U-form of the post has legs that are bent inwardly at their ends over 180°. This allows forming an even better engagement with the restraining means of the insulator.
[0025] The height of both distance keeper and flange preferably match the internal depth of the post, which results in two advantages: a simpler assembly and a rigid engagement of insulator with post.
[0026] In another most preferable embodiment, the flange has an elongated cross-section with a smallest dimension and a largest dimension. This elongated cross-section can have the form of a rectangular or an oval.
The smallest dimension is smaller than the opening width of the post, which facilitates insertion of the insulator in the post. The largest dimension is greater than the opening width of the post, which allows fixed engagement of the insulator in the post.
[0027] According to a third aspect of the invention, there is provided a method of assembling an insulator in a post. The method comprises the following steps: a) providing an insulator according to the first aspect of the invention; b) providing a post having a single wall with a U-form as cross-section and with holes; c) inserting an insulator in one of the holes in the post; d) exercising pressure on the insulator until the distance keeper of the insulator reaches the bottom of the post; e) rotating the insulator over 90° to engage the retaining means of the insulator with the post.

Mode(s) for Carrying Out the Invention
[0033] FIGURE 1 shows a perspective view of an insulator 10 according to the first aspect of the invention. The insulator 10 is a single mono-bloc piece made of plastic and has following contiguous parts.
[0034] A head 12 with a polygonal cross-section, i.e. with several planar walls in order to allow a pair of tongs or a screw-wrench gripping the head and rotating the insulator over 90°.
[0035] A flange 14 with an rectangular cross-section. [0036] A distance keeper 15 in the form of parts protruding laterally from the insulator 10.
[0037] A tail end 16 to be inserted through the hole of a post. The tail end 16 can be cylindrical or not. In a preferable embodiment the tail end can have several longitudinal ribs with a longitudinal space between each rib.
[0038] Retaining means 18 are positioned at the end of the flange 14 and are intended to engage with the post.
[0039] FIGURE 2 illustrates a step of how to insert an insulator 10 in a single walled pole 20.
[0040] The pole 20 has a cross-section substantially in the form of a U-form. The U-form has legs 22 that are bent inwardly at the end over 180°. Between the bent ends of the legs 22 is a pole opening 24. The pole 20 further has holes 26.
[0041] An operator can push the insulator 10 with its tail end 16 first into a hole 26. The operator holds the insulator 10 in a direction so that the longest dimension of the flange 14 is aligned with the pole opening 24. The largest dimensions of the tail end 16 match with the dimensions of the hole 26.
[0042] In a subsequent step, the operator exercises pressure on the insulator 10, e.g. by means of a hammer, until the distance keeper 15 reaches the bottom of the pole 20. This results in the situation illustrated in FIGURE 3. The flange 14 fits within the pole opening 14.
[0043] In a final step, the operator grips the head 12 of the insulator by means of a screw-wrench and rotates the insulator 10 over 90° so that the protruding retaining means 18 of the flange fit inside the bent ends of the legs 22 of the pole 20. This results in the situation shown in FIGURE 4.

Claims

Claims
1 ) An insulator for electrical fence and adapted to be inserted in a post, said insulator comprising following contiguous parts: a head, a flange, a middle part and a tail end, all said contiguous parts comprising a central bore that extends throughout said insulator,
CHARACTERIZED BY said middle part having a distance keeper to help positioning said insulator in said post, said distance keeper protruding laterally in comparison with said tail end, said flange comprising restraining means adapted to engage said insulator in said post. 2) The insulator of claim 1 , said flange having an elongated form.
3) The insulator according to claim 1 or claim 2, said flange forming a flange plane, said restraining means protruding from said flange plane in the direction of said head.
4) The insulator according to claim 3, said restraining means being positioned at the end of said flange.
5) The insulator according to any one of the preceding claims, said head having planar side walls facilitating gripping.
6) An assembly of a post and at least one insulator according to any one of claims 1 to 5, said post having a single wall with a U-form as cross-section with a post opening extending along the length of the post, said post having holes, said at least one insulator being positioned in said holes.
7) The assembly according to claim 6, said U-form having legs that are bent inwardly at the end over 90°.
8) The assembly according to claim 6, said U-form having legs that are bent inwardly at the end over 180°.
9) The assembly according to any one of claims 6 to 8, said post having an internal depth, said distance keeper and said flange having a height, said height matching said internal depth.
10) The assembly according to any one of claims 6 to 9, said tail having a tail cross-section, said holes having a hole cross-section, said tail cross-section matching said hole cross-section.
11 ) The assembly according to any one of claims 6 to 10, said post opening having a post opening width, said flange having an elongated cross-section with a smallest dimension and a largest dimension, said smallest dimension being smaller than said post opening width, said largest dimension being greater than said post opening width.
12) A method of assembling an insulator in a post, said method comprising the following steps: a) providing an insulator according to any one of claims 1 to 5; b) providing a post having a single wall with a U-form as cross-section and with holes; c) inserting said insulator in one of said holes; d) exercising pressure on said insulator until said distance keeper reaches the bottom of said post; e) rotating said insulator over 90° to engage said retaining means with said post.
