Definitions
- the invention relates to a blank for forming a package.
- the invention also relates to a package formed from such a blank.
- the package should e.g., often be designed such that it makes efficient use of the material, is easy to transport to the point of use, is easy to prepare for use, and provides a strong structure. It is often desirable that it is strong during handling and stable in an erected state. Moreover, it should often be capable of being erected into a box with a lid and to be used as a box with a lid without the use of any adhesive or similar means of keeping the erected and/or closed, or at least with a minimum use of such adhesive or similar means.
- Packages made from cardboard are beneficial since they do not take up much space before they are erected, during for example transport. There exist numerous attempts to address the above design criteria in connection to designing a package of cardboard material.
- EP2174877 B1 discloses a box and a single blank for forming such box.
- the blank comprises an outer lid panel and an inner lid panel, wherein parts of the inner lid panel can be removed.
- the inner lid panel is connected to a first flap which is glued to an inside of a rear wall of the box to form a closed box.
- the outer lid panel is in turn connected to a second flap which is glued to an outside of a front wall of the box.
- the document discloses a locking mechanism for the outer lid panel allowing the box to be reclosed after initial opening.
- the prior art document does not adequately address the set of design criteria that the package should make efficient use of the material, be formed of one single blank, be easy to erect, be closed in a simple manner in the erected state and provide a strong structure, while being capable of being erected into a box with a lid and used as a box with a lid without the use of any adhesive or any similar means of keeping the box erected and/or closed, or at least with minimum use of such adhesive or similar means, while also being easy to stack.
- a further object of the invention is to provide a blank that may be erected into a box with a lid and used as a box with a lid without the use of any adhesive or any similar means of keeping the box erected and/or closed, or at least with a minimum use of such adhesive or similar means, while also being easy to stack.

Description
BLANK FOR FORMING A PACKAGE, AND A PACKAGE FORMED OF SUCH BLANK
Field of the invention
The invention relates to a blank for forming a package.
The invention also relates to a package formed from such a blank.
Background art
When designing a package, it is often desirous to take into account a number of different design criteria. The package should e.g., often be designed such that it makes efficient use of the material, is easy to transport to the point of use, is easy to prepare for use, and provides a strong structure.
When designing a package being a box with a lid, it is often desirous that the package can be closed in a simple manner in an erected state. When designing packages of a smaller size it is typically desirous to consider also other aspects, such as that it should be easy to stack on shelves in the stores.
Packages made from cardboard are beneficial since they do not take up much space before they are erected, during for example transport. There exist numerous attempts to address the above design criteria in connection to designing a package of cardboard material.
EP2174877 B1 for instance discloses a box and a single blank for forming such box. The blank comprises an outer lid panel and an inner lid panel, wherein parts of the inner lid panel can be removed. The inner lid panel is connected to a first flap which is glued to an inside of a rear wall of the box to form a closed box. The outer lid panel is in turn connected to a second flap which is glued to an outside of a front wall of the box. Further, the
document discloses a locking mechanism for the outer lid panel allowing the box to be reclosed after initial opening.
However, it may be noted that the prior art document does not adequately address the set of design criteria that the package should make efficient use of the material, be formed of one single blank, be easy to erect, be closed in a simple manner in the erected state and provide a strong structure, while being capable of being erected into a box with a lid and used as a box with a lid without the use of any adhesive or any similar means of keeping the box erected and/or closed, or at least with minimum use of such adhesive or similar means, while also being easy to stack.
Summary of the invention
It is an object of the invention to provide a package concept which addresses at least some of the set of design criteria described above, namely that the package should make efficient use of the material, be formed of one single blank, be easy to erect, be closed in a simple manner in the erected state and provide a strong structure. A further object of the invention is to provide a blank that may be erected into a box with a lid and used as a box with a lid without the use of any adhesive or any similar means of keeping the box erected and/or closed, or at least with a minimum use of such adhesive or similar means, while also being easy to stack.
This object has been achieved by a blank for forming a package, the blank comprising: a set of major panels comprising an inner lid panel, a front wall panel, a bottom panel, a rear wall panel, and an outer lid panel, wherein the major panels are foldably interconnected and consecutively arranged in said order along a longitudinal direction, a first and a second set of end wall panels, each set including a first end wall panel and a second end wall panel being foldably interconnected and arranged one after another along a respective transverse direction, the first end wall panel of respective set being foldably connected to the bottom panel at a respective longitudinally extending transverse side of the set of
major panels, wherein the first and second end wall panels are configured to be folded relative to each other such that respective set of end wall panels form a respective double-walled end wall at the respective longitudinally extending transverse side when the blank is erected to form said package, a first inner lid wall panel being foldably connected to the inner lid panel at the first longitudinally extending transverse side of the set of major panels and a second inner lid wall panel being foldably connected to the inner lid panel at the second longitudinally extending transverse side of the set of major panels, wherein the respective inner lid wall panel is configured to be positioned into abutment with an inside surface of the respective doublewalled end wall at the respective longitudinally extending transverse side, when the is erected to form said package, and an inner lid closing flap being foldably connected to the inner lid panel at a first transversely extending side of the inner lid panel, wherein the inner lid closing flap is configured to be positioned along, and preferably into abutment with, an inside surface of the rear panel, when the blank is erected to form said package, wherein the inner lid panel comprises a portion being at least partly defined by a perforation and being designed to be torn open or torn off to provide access to an interior of the package, wherein the portion may as a label to facilitate reference thereto be referred to as a tear-off portion, wherein each second end wall panel or first end wall panel comprises a first locking cut-out and/or a second locking cut-out, and wherein the first inner lid wall panel and second inner lid wall panel each comprises a first locking flap being configured to be received by the first locking cut-out in the respective second end wall panel or first end wall panel when the blank is erected to form said package, and/or wherein the inner lid closing flap comprises a set of two or more second locking flaps, each second locking flap being arranged at a respective longitudinally extending transverse side of the inner lid closing flap and being configured to be received by the second locking cut-out of the respective second end wall panel or first end wall panel when the blank is erected to form said package.
With the disclosed design, there is provided a blank for forming a package having a front panel, a bottom panel, a rear panel, an inner lid panel and an outer lid panel. Thus, a complete package may, and preferably is, formed by one single blank. With the disclosed design, especially in an embodiment where one blank comprises all components, the provision of a package which makes efficient use of the material and at the same time is easy to erect is facilitated. It is preferred that the front panel, the bottom panel, the rear panel, the inner lid panel and the outer lid panel extend along a single common plane, as seen in a flat-laid state of the blank. In a preferred embodiment, the blank is designed such that when the blank is erected to form the package, the front panel and the rear panel extend along parallel planes. In a preferred embodiment, the blank is designed such that when the blank is erected to form the package and the package is in a closed state, the bottom panel, the inner lid panel and the outer lid panel extend along parallel planes. Preferably, the package is shaped as a geometrical right-angular block.
With the disclosed design, where the first and second end wall panels of respective set are configured to be folded relative to each other in order to form the double-walled end wall at the respective transverse side may facilitate provision of a stable and strong structure. Preferably, the doublewalled end wall at the respective longitudinally extending transverse side may be folded such that the first end wall panel of the respective set forms an outside of the respective double-walled end wall and such that the second end wall panel of the respective set forms an inside of the respective doublewalled end wall. This latter facilitates the provision of locking tabs and recesses capable of keeping the double-walled end wall in the intended double-folded position without the use of any adhesive. It should be noted that the double-walled end wall may, fully or for parts of its planar extension, include more than two layers of material; the first and the second end wall panels of the respective set and for instance one or more wall panels being inserted between and/or into abutment with the first and the second end wall panels forming the respective double-walled end wall. However, the term
double-walled is here intended to refer to the fact that the end wall is formed of two major end wall panels being connected to and folded relative to each other.
The first locking cut-out and/or second locking cut-out of each of the respective first or second end wall panel is preferably formed in the respective first or second end wall panel forming an inside surface of the respective double-walled end wall. Preferably, the respective second end wall panel forms an inside surface of respective double-walled end wall and thus preferably, the first locking cut-out and/or second locking cut-out of each of the respective first or second end wall panel is preferably formed in the respective second end wall panel.
With the disclosed design, where the first and second inner lid wall panels are configured to be positioned into abutment with the inside of the double-walled end wall at the respective transverse side, the provision of a strong and stable structure is facilitated. Further, the first and second inner lid wall panel being configured to be positioned into abutment with the inside of the double-walled end wall at the respective transverse side, facilitates provision of that the inner lid panel may be kept in place when the blank has been erected to form a package.
With the disclosed design, where the inner lid closing flap is configured to be positioned along an inside surface of the rear panel, the provision of a strong and stable structure is facilitated. This is further enhanced if the inner lid closing flap is configured to be positioned into abutment with the inside surface of the rear panel. Further, where the inner lid closing flap is configured to be positioned into abutment with the inside surface, facilitate provision of that the inner lid panel may be kept in place when the blank is erected to form the package. Thus, the first and second inner lid wall panel as well as the inner lid closing flap may be configured to facilitate provision of that the inner lid panel may be kept in place when the blank is in the erected state. Especially, this is provided in a manner which still makes it easy to erect the blank into a package, which counteracts unintentional opening of the
inner lid, and which may be performed without the need for any adhesive, staples or the like.
With the disclosed design where each locking flap being configured to be received by the respective locking cut-out facilitates provision of the inner lid panel being easy to close and lock.
It may be noted that it is conceivable that the blank may only be provided with the first locking flaps and first locking cut-outs or alternatively only be provided with the second locking flaps and second locking cut-outs. However, it is preferred that the blank is provided with both the first and second locking flaps and first and second locking cut-outs. The first and second locking cut-outs may also be referred to as first and second locking recesses.
Preferably, respective first locking flap is configured to be folded 180° backwardly or outwardly such that the first locking flap may be easily received by the first locking cut-out. Preferably, the second locking flap is configured to be folded 90° forwardly or inwardly such that the second locking flap may be easily received by the second locking cut-out. Having the first and second locking flap being folded backward and forward respectively, a stable connecting mechanism and locking mechanism for the inner lid panel is provided. The respective locking flap and locking cut-out provides for that the inner lid panel can be kept in place. Thus, the inner lid panel together with the locking flaps and locking cut-outs facilitate provision of that it is not possible to reach the gods being placed within the package. Thus, the inner lid panel covers the interior of the package.
With the disclosed design, where the inner lid panel comprises the portion being at least partly defined by the perforation provide for that the inner lid panel may be opened in an easy way without destroying the package, when the blank has been erected and folded into a closed package. With the disclosed design, where the outer lid panel is configured to be positioned outside the inner lid panel, facilitate provision of a package that is usable even after the tear off portion of the inner lid panel has been removed. By the disclosed design, the package has an unboxing experience such that it
may be useful as e.g., a giftbox or the like. Further, the disclosed design facilitates provision of a package that may be closed and locked without any use of adhesive or the similar means.
The respective first locking flap may be configured to be folded outwardly and into abutment with an outside surface of the respective one of the first inner lid wall panel and second inner lid wall when the blank is erected to form said package. Thereby, the locking flap of respective inner lid wall panel will become sandwiched between the associated inner lid wall panel and the associated end wall panel being configured to form the inside surface of the double-walled end wall and being provided with the first locking recess. This sandwiching action will aid in forcefully keeping the respective first locking flap in the received position in the associated first locking recess.
The respective second locking flap may be configured to be folded inwardly and into abutment with an inside of the respective double-walled end wall when the blank is erected to form said package. Thereby, the respective locking flap will securely be positioned in the respective second locking recess in the associated double-walled end wall. Preferably, the lid closing flap has a width along the transverse direction being equal to the distance between the inside surfaces of the double-walled end walls, as measured when the blank has been erected into a package, whereby the second locking flaps being folded relative to the longitudinally extending sides of the inner lid closing flap will occupy at least part of the space left by the second locking recesses in the panel forming the inside surface of the respective doublewalled end wall.
The blank may further comprise a first front wall locking panel being foldably connected to the front panel at the first longitudinally extending transverse side of the set of major panels and a second front wall locking panel being foldably connected to the front panel at the second longitudinally extending transverse side of the set of major panels, wherein the respective front wall locking panel is configured to be positioned in between the first and the second end wall panels of respective set forming the respective doublewalled end wall when the blank is erected to form said package. The front
wall locking panels may be used to keep the front wall in the intended upright position. The front wall locking panels preferably has a height being equal to the height inside the double-walled end wall.
The blank may further comprise a first rear wall locking panel being foldably connected to the rear panel at the first longitudinally extending transverse side of the set of major panels and a second rear wall locking panel being foldably connected to the rear panel at the second longitudinally extending transverse side of the set of major panels, wherein the respective rear wall locking panel is configured to be positioned between the first and the second end wall panels of respective set forming the respective doublewalled end wall when the blank is erected to form said package. The rear wall locking panels may be used to keep the rear wall in the intended upright position. The rear wall locking panels preferably has a height being equal to the height inside the double-walled end wall.
The blank may further comprise a first outer lid wall panel being foldably connected to the outer lid panel at the first longitudinally extending transverse side of the set of major panels and a second outer lid wall panel being foldably connected to the outer lid panel at the second longitudinally extending transverse side of the set of major panels, wherein the respective outer lid wall panel is configured to be positioned into abutment with the inside surface of the double-walled end wall when the blank is erected to form said package. It may be noted that the outer lid wall panels each have a position and an extension along the longitudinal direction such that the inner lid wall panels abut the inside surface of the double-walled end wall in a portion, as seen along the longitudinal direction where the first and second locking recesses are located, preferably close to the rear wall, whereas the respective outer lid wall panel is sandwiched between the inside surface of the double-walled end wall and the inner lid wall panel in a portion, as seen along the longitudinal direction where there are no first and second locking recesses, preferably close to the front wall.
The blank may further comprise an outer lid closing flap being foldably connected to the outer lid panel at a second transversely extending side of
the outer lid panel opposite to the connection between the outer lid panel and the rear wall panel, wherein the outer lid closing flap is configured to be positioned into abutment with an outside surface of the front panel when the blank is erected to form the package. The outer lid closing flap may be used to keep the outer lid panel in a closed position.
The blank may further comprise a first and a second outer lid locking flap being arranged at a respective longitudinally extending transverse side of the outer lid closing flap and being configured to be positioned in between the first and the second end wall panel of respective set forming the respective double-walled end wall when the blank is erected to form said package. The first and a second outer lid locking flaps may thereby keep the outer lid closing flap and the outer lid panel in a closed position.
