ONLINE MONITORING SYSTEM FOR MOTOR VEHICLES
Technical Field
The present invention relates to an online monitoring system for motor vehicles, which can be used particularly in anti-theft systems for motor vehicles.
Background Art
Online appliances are known which, once installed on board a vehicle, are able to detect the modes of use of the vehicle itself over time.
These appliances are used, e.g., in the insurance sector, to determine customized fees on the basis of the actual use of the vehicle or for the post-determination and post-assessment of sudden events such as accidents.
The appliances of known type generally comprise a control unit which can be installed on board the vehicle, inside the passenger compartment, and which can be connected to the electronics of the vehicle itself.
Such appliances also comprise a radio-wave device of the type commonly used in the mobile phone field capable of communicating by means of conventional mobile communication standards.
The transceiver, in particular, supports the sending of the information collected by the appliance towards a data remote storage and processing station.
These appliances generally also comprises a satellite receiver, of the type of a GPS receiver or equivalent, which allows the location of the vehicle by means of the detected coordinates of latitude, longitude and, possibly, altitude.
In actual facts, the operation of the appliance provides for the collection at regular time intervals of information relating to the position of the vehicle by means of the GPS receiver and the subsequent transmission of such information to the remote control station by means of the radio-wave transceiver.
The information thus collected by the remote control station is then processed to determine useful data for the specific scope of application.
Further information may be collected by the appliance through the use of additional devices such as, e.g., an accelerometer installed on the vehicle and adapted to detect abrupt accelerations and decelerations.
The accelerometer, in particular, can be used in the insurance field to determine
how an accident has occurred and, therefore, the responsibilities related thereto. In particular, the presence of the accelerometer allows detecting sudden accelerations and decelerations of the vehicle due to the occurrence of an accident, thus allowing the reconstruction of the accident itself.
In addition, the accelerometer can be used to detect any theft or attempted theft of the vehicle.
In addition, the use is known of auxiliary online devices used in conjunction with conventional online appliance.
In particular, such auxiliary online devices are self-powered and, therefore, they are provided with their own internal power supply battery.
In addition, similar to the main online appliance installed on the vehicle, such auxiliary online devices are provided with a locating unit, e.g. of the type of a GPS receiver, and with a radio-wave communication unit, e.g. of the type of a conventional transceiver for mobile phones.
Generally, such auxiliary online devices are located in different positions inside the vehicle and are configured to activate periodically in order to send further control signals to the remote control station.
The solutions of known type do, however, have some drawbacks.
In particular, the auxiliary online devices are generally configured to activate periodically, e.g., once a day, to send the collected data, e.g., the position data, to the remote processing station.
Therefore, since the auxiliary online devices are self-powered, this can lead to battery exhaustion in a short time, with the consequent need to plan the periodic replacement of the devices themselves or, even more critically, with the consequent possibility of a lack of communication with the remote control station.
Description of the Invention
The main aim of the present invention is to devise an online monitoring system for motor vehicles which allows limiting the consumption of the auxiliary online devices, while at the same time ensuring effective operation of the same. Another object of the present invention is to devise an online monitoring system
for motor vehicles which allows overcoming the aforementioned drawbacks of the prior art within a simple, rational, easy and effective to use as well as affordable solution.
The aforementioned objects are achieved by the present online monitoring system for motor vehicles according to claim 1.
Brief Description of the Drawings
Other characteristics and advantages of the present invention will become more apparent from the description of a preferred, but not exclusive, embodiment of an online monitoring system for motor vehicles, illustrated by way of an indicative, yet non-limiting example, in the accompanying tables of drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is a general diagram of the online monitoring system according to the invention;
Figures 2 and 3 schematically show possible applications of the online monitoring system according to the invention.
Embodiments of the Invention
With particular reference to these figures, reference numeral 1 globally indicates an online monitoring system for motor vehicles, which can be used, in particular, in anti-theft systems for motor vehicles or in monitoring systems in general.
Specifically, the system 1 comprises a main online device 2 which is installable on a motor vehicle A. The main online device 2 is capable of monitoring the way the vehicle is used.
In particular, the main online device 2 comprises a locating unit 3 configured to detect the position of the motor vehicle A. For example, the locating unit 3 may be composed of a GPS receiver of the conventional type or of a similar device. Furthermore, the main online device 2 comprises an unit of measurement of the acceleration 4 configured to detect accelerations of the motor vehicle A along at least one direction. For example, the unit of measurement of the acceleration 4 may be composed of a three-axis accelerometer or of a similar device.
The main online device 2 also comprises a communication unit 5 configured to
communicate with at least one remote control station C for data collection.
The system 1 according to the invention also comprises at least one auxiliary online device 6 which can be used in combination with the main online device 2.
In particular, the auxiliary online device 6 is self-powered and, therefore, it comprises its own internal power supply battery 7.
Furthermore, similarly to the main online device 2, the auxiliary online device 6 comprises an auxiliary locating unit 8, e.g. of the type of a GPS receiver or a similar device, and an auxiliary radio-wave communication unit 9, e.g. of the type of a conventional transceiver for mobile phones, configured to communicate with the remote control station C.
The auxiliary online device 6 can be positioned on the motor vehicle A at different positions with respect to the main online device 2.
Advantageously, the auxiliary online device 6 is normally in a low-power configuration, wherein at least the auxiliary locating unit 8 and the auxiliary communication unit 9 are disabled. In this way, with the auxiliary online device 6 in such a low-power configuration, the consumption of the internal power supply battery 7 is minimized.
Advantageously, the auxiliary online device 6 also comprises a verification and signaling unit, shown overall in Figure 1 with reference numeral 10, operationally connected to the main online device 2 and configured to bring the auxiliary online device 6 from the low-power configuration to an operational configuration in case of lack of communication with the main online device 2. Specifically, in such an operational configuration the auxiliary locating unit 8 is on and detects the position of the auxiliary online device 6, while the auxiliary communication unit 9 is on and sends the detected position to the remote control station C.
According to a preferred embodiment, shown in Figure 1, the verification and signaling unit 10 comprises a short-range communication unit 11 configured to send, in a programmed fashion, a control signal CNTRL towards the main online device 2 and to receive a confirmation signal ACK from the main online
device 2 in response to the control signal CNTRL.
Preferably, the short-range communication unit 11 of the auxiliary online device 6 is composed of a Bluetooth transceiver.
The implementation of the short-range communication unit 11 cannot however be ruled out using different types of communication technologies and protocols. In order to receive the control signal CNTRL and to send the confirmation signal ACK, the main online device 2 is provided with a respective short-range communication unit 12.
Preferably, the short-range communication unit 12 of the main online device 2 is composed of a Bluetooth transceiver.
Furthermore, still according to the preferred embodiment shown in Figure 1 , the verification and signaling unit 10 comprises activation means 13 operationally connected to the short-range communication unit 11 and configured to:
- periodically activate the short-range communication unit 11 to send the control signal CNTRL, and to
- bring the auxiliary online device 6 from the low-power configuration to the operational configuration in case of non-receipt of the confirmation signal ACK.
According to a possible embodiment, the auxiliary online device 6 also comprises an auxiliary unit of measurement of the acceleration 14.
Advantageously, the system 1 according to the invention can be used as an antitheft or monitoring system, in general, capable of protecting not only the motor vehicle A itself but also any trailers R and the goods or objects, in general, transported by them.
An example of a possible application is schematically shown in Figure 2.
Specifically, in such a case the system 1 comprises a plurality of auxiliary online devices 6 operationally connected to the main online device 2, to define a network of auxiliary online devices 6.
Advantageously, the main online device 2 is fitted on the motor vehicle A, while the auxiliary online devices 6 are as sociable with objects transported by the motor vehicle A, such as product packages, individual products or the like,
or towed by the motor vehicle itself, such as the trailer R of a truck.
A further possible application is schematically shown in Figure 3.
In particular, in such a case the system 1 comprises a main online device 2 fitted on a motor vehicle and powered by the battery B of the motor vehicle itself. An auxiliary online device 6 may be suitably located in a hidden and/or difficult to reach position on the motor vehicle. In this way, the auxiliary online device 6 is able to intervene in the event of tampering with the main device 2.
The following describes the management method of the system 1 according to the invention.
In particular, the method comprises the preparation of the auxiliary online device 6 in the low-power configuration, wherein at least the auxiliary locating unit 8 and the auxiliary communication unit 9 are disabled.
Next, the method comprises the verification of the communication between the auxiliary online device 6 and the main online device 2.
In case of lack of communication with the main online device 2, the auxiliary online device 6 is brought from the low-power configuration to the operational configuration, wherein the auxiliary locating unit 8 is on and detects the position of the auxiliary online device 6 and the auxiliary communication unit 9 is on and sends the detected position to the remote control station C.
In particular, the aforementioned verification phase comprises at least the following steps which are periodically carried out: sending a control signal CNTRL by means of the auxiliary short-range communication unit 11 to the main online device 2; sending a confirmation signal ACK by means of the main online device 2 in response to the control signal CNTRL;
- waiting for the confirmation signal from the auxiliary online device 6 within a predefined maximum time.
In case of non-receipt of the confirmation signal ACK within the predefined maximum time, the method comprises bringing the auxiliary online device 6 from the low-power configuration to the operational configuration.
It has in practice been ascertained that the described invention achieves the
intended objects.
In particular, the fact is underlined that the presence of the specific verification and signaling unit on the auxiliary online device makes it possible to limit the consumption of the auxiliary online devices, while at the same time ensuring their effective operation.
Moreover, the proposed solution allows overcoming the aforementioned drawbacks of the prior art within a simple, rational, easy and effective to use as well as affordable solution.
