Description

A device for rolling back silage cover material at a silage storage location
The present invention relates to a device for rolling back silage cover material at a silage storage location.
Such a device is known. Prior art document EP 3'269'230 discloses a device for rolling up silage cover material at a bunker silo. A large number of small, interconnected rolling elements is positioned on top of the silage. The rolling elements are all provided directly on top of the silage and are constantly in contact with the silage. There is a need for an improved device.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an improved device.
The invention achieves the object at least in part by means of a device according to claim 1 , in particular a device for rolling back silage cover material at a silage storage location with silage covered at least partly by silage cover material and having a silage retrieval face, said device comprising an elongated frame suitable for being positioned on top of the silage cover material in a working position near the silage retrieval face, said frame being provided with at least one combination of a first driveable cylindrical roll element extending in the longitudinal direction of the frame and connectable to the silage cover material for rolling up the silage cover material and a second cylindrical roll element extending substantially parallel to the first driveable cylindrical roll element for guiding and pressing down the silage cover material, the first roll element being disposed on the frame such that, in the working position, it is positioned at a distance above the silage.
In this way, an efficient and practical device is realized. The invention is based upon the insight that a frame with roll elements offers several advantages. Firstly, the weight of the frame contributes to pressing and holding down the silage cover material. Secondly, the first roll element(s) for rolling up the silage cover material can be positioned above the silage, which results in less friction during the rolling up process and easier handling of the rolled up silage cover material. Moreover, drive means for the driveable roll element(s) are also more easily accessible in this way.
Suitable and advantageous embodiments are described in the dependent claims, as well as in the description below.
According to an embodiment, said frame is provided with a plurality of said combinations of first and second roll elements, each combination being connected to the next one in a pivoting manner, such that the frame is suitable for being positioned on top of the silage cover material adapting to the contour of the silage. In this way, a flexible device is provided which is adjustable to different shapes and circumstances.
In a further embodiment, said plurality of combinations of first and second roll elements is mounted on the frame and connected in such a way that the second roll elements of neighbouring combinations are substantially in line with each other, whilst the first roll elements of neighbouring combinations are slightly offset from one another. This ensures, on the one hand, a good guidance of the silage cover material by means of the aligned second roll elements, and on the other hand, an easy handling by means of the offset first roll elements.
In yet another embodiment, each of said combinations of roll elements is mounted on the frame in such a way that the second roll element, in the working position of the frame, is positioned closer to the silage retrieval face than the first roll element. The handling of the rolled up silage cover material is thus further facilitated.
Advantageously, each of said first driveable cylindrical roll elements is provided with its own motor, each motor being separately driveable. This allows for an independent control of the first roll elements, enabling corrections during the rolling up process, e.g. in case the rolling up movement is askew or in case of an erroneous movement of one of the first roll elements.
In a further embodiment, each motor is positioned substantially inside a first driveable cylindrical roll element. This results in a compact construction and the motor is well protected.
In yet another embodiment, said at least one first driveable cylindrical roll element is suitable, by means of its rolling action, for moving the frame, in its working position, across the silage away from the silage retrieval face. In this way, the silage cover material is rolled up efficiently.
Advantageously, said at least one second cylindrical roll element is provided with a silage cover material cutting means. Thus, the silage cover material can easily be cut into handy pieces during the rolling up process.
In an embodiment, at least one cover screen suitable for covering at least a part of the silage retrieval face is movably connected to the frame. Covering the silage retrieval face after silage has been retrieved there is highly advantageous.
Preferably, the cover screen is rollable. This is a simple, yet practical implementation. The screen can be rolled up to uncover the silage retrieval face, so that silage can be retrieved. It can be rolled down to cover the silage retrieval face again.
In an embodiment, the cover screen is mounted on the frame in such a way that, in the working position of the frame, is movable in a substantially horizontal direction substantially perpendicular to the elongated frame. This enables an unobstructed rolling action for the screen. Moreover, it facilitates the covering of the silage retrieval face.
Advantageously, the cover screen is mounted hingedly to the frame. This simple construction has the advantage, that gravity assists in orienting the screen in the desired position.
In yet a further embodiment, the cover screen is air permeable. This is advantageous for the silage storage.
Preferably, the frame is provided with means suitable for, in its working position, pressing down and holding in place the silage cover material at all sides other than the silage retrieval face. In this way, the silage is efficiently covered.
The invention will now be further explained with reference to the following Figures.
Figures 1A to 1 D show a device according to the invention:
Figure 1A in a perspective view;
Figure 1 B in a top view;
Figure 1C in a front view, in a slightly different position;
Figure 1 D in a schematic side view;
Figure 2 shows a bunker silo with silage covered by silage cover material and an embodiment of the device according to the invention;
Figure 3 shows a bunker silo with silage covered by silage cover material and a further embodiment of the device according to the invention.
In Figure 1 an embodiment of a device according to the invention is depicted. Such a device can be used at a silage storage location, such as a bunker silo, drive-in silo, drive-in silage pit or any other location suitable for storing silage. The silage stored there is usually covered, at least partly, by silage cover material such as ensilage foil, silage wrapping, silage film or any other cover means. This is done in order to protect the silage from damaging external influences. The silage has a silage retrieval face or front, that is the side where the silage can be cut off, i.e. the cutting face. This silage retrieval face usually extends (substantially) in a vertical plane. In this way, the silage can be conveniently cut off in a known manner by known cutting means. To make the silage at the silage retrieval face accessible for the cutting means, the silage cover material has to be rolled back temporarily. Rolling back the silage cover material manually is cumbersome and labour-intensive. This process is facilitated with the aid of the device according to the invention, as will be elucidated below.
The device for rolling back silage cover material comprises an elongated frame 1 suitable for being positioned on top of the silage cover material in a working position near the silage retrieval face, such that it extends in a curved surface defined by the silage top surface near the silage retrieval face, as will be explained more in detail below with reference to Figures 2 and 3. The bottom side of the frame 1 in Figures 1 A to 1 D is the contact side of the frame 1 , which will be in contact with the silage in the working position.
Said frame 1 , as can be seen in Figures 1A to 1 D, comprises at least one combination of a first driveable cylindrical roll element 2 extending in the longitudinal direction of the frame 1 and connectable to the silage cover material for rolling up the silage cover material and a second cylindrical roll element 3 extending substantially parallel to the first driveable cylindrical roll element 2 for contacting, guiding and pressing down the silage cover material. The first roll element 2 is disposed on the frame 1 such that, in the working position, it is positioned at a distance above the silage. In other words, the first roll element 2 is not disposed at the contact side of the frame 1 , but at a distance from said contact side.
The frame 1 with roll elements 2, 3 offers several advantages. The weight of the frame 1 contributes to pressing and holding down the silage cover material. The frame 1 enables the first roll element(s) 2 for rolling up the silage cover material to be positioned above the silage, which results in low friction during the rolling up process and easy handling of the rolled up silage cover material. Drive means for the driveable roll element(s) 2 are also easily accessible in this way.
The frame 1 is provided with a plurality of said combinations of first and second roll elements 2, 3, each combination being connected to the next one in a pivoting manner, such that the frame 1 is suitable for being positioned on top of the silage cover material adapting to the contour of the silage. This is illustrated particularly in Figure 1C. The silage can have a rounded top surface, as shown in Figures 2 and 3. Thus, the frame 1 is adjustable to different shapes of silage and circumstances. Each combination of roll elements 2, 3 can be mounted on a respective subframe, the subframes being connected in a pivoting manner and together forming the frame 1 .
In Figures 1A, 1 B and 1 D, two combinations of roll elements 2, 3 are shown aligned in a substantially straight line. By means of a flexible, pivoting connection (not shown, known as such) provided on the frame 1 the combinations can move relative to one another. The frame 1 is suitable for being positioned on top of the silage cover material in a working position near the silage retrieval face such that it extends substantially horizontally (see e.g. Figures 1A and 1 B). The frame 1 can also be positioned in a slightly curved way, as illustrated in Figure 1 C, following a curved silage surface contour.
In the example shown in Figure 1 , there are two combinations of roll elements 2, 3. Of course, it is possible to align 3, 4, 5 or more of these combinations. For a small heap of silage, even one single combination of roller elements 2, 3 may be used.
Said plurality of combinations of first and second roll elements 2, 3 is advantageously mounted on the frame 1 and connected in such a way that the second roll elements 3 of neighbouring combinations are substantially in line with each other, whilst the first roll elements 2 of neighbouring combinations are slightly offset from one another, as can be seen best in Figures 1A, 1 B and 1 D. This ensures, on the one hand, a good guidance of the silage cover material by means of the aligned second roll elements 3, and on the other hand, an easy handling by means of the offset first roll elements 2.
Specifically, the frame 1 is constructed such that in each of said combinations of roll elements 2, 3, the second roll element 3, in the working position of the frame, is positioned closer to the silage retrieval face than the first roll element 2. This can best be seen in Figures 2 and 3. The handling of the rolled up silage cover material is thus further facilitated.
Each of said first driveable cylindrical roll elements 2 is provided with its own motor, each motor being separately driveable. This allows for an independent control of the first roll elements 2, enabling corrections during the rolling up process, e.g. in case the rolling up movement is askew or in case of an erroneous movement of one of the first roll elements 2. Each motor is positioned substantially inside a first driveable cylindrical roll element 2, so that the motors are not visible in the Figures. This results in a compact construction and the motors are well protected. Electric motors can advantageously be used, for example speed-controlled motors. Advantageously, electric motors with a large reduction gear are used, in order to obtain a high torque.
Said at least one first driveable cylindrical roll element 2 is suitable, by means of its rolling action, for moving the frame 1 , in its working position, across the silage away from the silage retrieval face, as will be described with reference to Figures 2 and 3. In this way, the silage cover material is rolled up efficiently. To this end, the frame 1 is also provided with further guiding means 4, in the example shown in the form of wheels 4 provided at the end of the frame 1 opposite to the second roll element 3. These guiding means 4 assist in guiding the frame 1 during the rolling up process.
In Figure 1 D, the dotted line symbolizes a piece of silage cover material connected to the first driveable roll element 2. The drawing is only schematic, the silage cover material may well touch the frame 1 between the wheel 4 and the second roll element 3, as the upper surface of the silage is usually not flat.
The functioning of the device according to the invention at the silage storage location will now be explained in detail.
Figure 2 shows a bunker silo with silage covered by silage cover material and an embodiment of the device according to the invention.
The bunker silo has side walls 5 and contains silage 6 covered with silage cover material 7, e.g. silage wrapping 7. Tyres 8 are used to press down and hold in place the silage cover material 7.
The device for rolling back silage cover material is positioned on top of the silage cover material 7 near the silage retrieval face, which extends in a substantially vertical plane between the side walls 5. The frame 1 extends more or less from one side wall 5 to the other side wall 5 of the silo in its working position near the silage retrieval face. The frame 1 follows the curved top surface of the silage 6 and is thus slightly curved too. It basically extends in a curved surface defined by the silage top surface near the vertical silage retrieval face.
The driveable first roll elements 2 are each connected to a certain width of the silage cover material 7. These widths of material, each constituting about half the total silage cover material width, are rolled around the outer surface of the first roll elements 2 so that they can be rolled up. For an easy connection of the silage cover material 7, hooks or other connecting elements, known as such, may be provided on the roll elements 2.
The second cylindrical roll elements 3 for guiding and pressing down the silage cover material 7 are covered by the widths of silage cover material 7 in Figure 2, so that they are not visible. The first roll elements 2 are disposed on the frame 1 such that, in the working position, they are positioned at a distance above the silage 6, with all the advantages already explained.
The second cylindrical roll elements 3 are provided with a silage cover material cutting means 9. Thus, the silage cover material can easily be cut into handy pieces or widths of material during the rolling up process. These means can be constituted by a sharply toothed cutting wheel 9 mounted at the end(s) of the second roll element 3.
Furthermore, sandbags 10 are provided on the frame 1 to press down and hold in place the silage cover material 7 at the sides near the side walls 5. The tyres 8 and the sandbags 10 thus form means suitable for pressing down and holding in place the silage cover material 7 at all sides other than the silage retrieval face. The tyres 8 can be arranged loosely on top of the silage cover material 7, the sandbags 10 are preferably attached to the frame 1. Instead of the tyres 8, more sandbags 10 or other means can be used, of course.
When the motors inside the first driveable roll elements 2 are activated, the respective widths of silage cover material 7 connected to the roll elements 2 are rolled up, causing the entire frame 1 to be moved across the silage 6 away from the silage retrieval face, aided by the second roll elements 3 and the wheels 4. In this way, the widths of material are rolled up and the silage 6 becomes accessible for retrieval at its retrieval face.
Figure 3 shows a bunker silo with silage covered by silage cover material and a further embodiment of the device according to the invention.
Here, a cover screen 11 suitable for covering at least a part of the silage retrieval face is additionally provided. It is movably connected to the frame 1. Covering the silage retrieval face after silage has been retrieved there is desirable to protect the remaining silage 6 efficiently. The cover screen 11 is rollable. It is connected via a screen holder 12 and a toothed rail 13 to the frame 1 , roughly in the middle between the two combinations of roll elements 2, 3. The screen 11 can be rolled up to uncover the silage retrieval face, so that silage 6 can be retrieved. It can be rolled down to cover the silage retrieval face again.
A motor 14, preferably an electric motor, enables the screen 11 to be moved, in the working position of the frame 1 , in a substantially horizontal direction substantially perpendicular to the elongated frame 1. In this way, the screen 11 can be moved away from the silage retrieval face, which enables an unobstructed rolling action for the screen 11. After moving the screen 11 away from the silage retrieval face and rolling it up, silage 6 can be retrieved. Afterwards, the screen 11 can be moved back against the silage retrieval face, in order to cover up the remaining silage again.
Preferably, the cover screen 11 is mounted hingedly to the frame 1 . This simple construction has the advantage, that gravity assists in orienting the screen 11 in the desired position. Means for stabilizing the screen 11 , known as such, may be provided, such as supporting ribs and/or an extra weight at the bottom side, e.g. a metal bar.
The cover screen 11 is air permeable. For example, it consists of or comprises windbreak netting. This is advantageous for the silage storage.
