Definitions
- the present invention relates to the design and manufacture of a reagent matrix used for the sorption of a cooling gas produced by the evaporation of a heat transfer fluid, or refrigerant fluid, in the case in point. Evaporation takes place in an evaporator of a cold production machine.
- Such a cold production machine comprises an evaporator and a reactor arranged in a closed circuit. It uses a refrigerant fluid (the refrigerant) which is evaporated in the evaporator and whose vapors are absorbed by a sorbent material (the sorbent) in the reactor.
- a refrigerant fluid the refrigerant
- the sorbent a refrigerant material
- a cold production phase corresponds to the endothermic evaporation of the refrigerant in the low pressure evaporator and to the chemical sorption of the vapors produced thanks to the exothermic synthesis reaction taking place in the reactor.
- the heat of reaction produced must be removed in such a way as to maintain the reaction out of equilibrium and thus allow the production of cold to continue.
- the deviation from equilibrium is directly linked to the rate of transformation and therefore to the thermal power involved. Reaching equilibrium conditions causes the reaction to stop and therefore the sorption of the refrigerant gas by the salt.
- a regeneration phase corresponds to the regeneration of the high pressure system.
- Thermochemical processes can use various solid/gas working couples: reactive salts such as oxides, hydrates, hydrides, ammoniates.
- reactive salts such as oxides, hydrates, hydrides, ammoniates.
- a synthesis of the state of the art on the families of existing reactive pairs is notably contained in the documents “A review on adsorption working pairs for refrigeration,” [L. W. Wang, R.Z. Wang, and R.G. Oliveira, Renew. sustain. Energy Rev., vol. 13, no. 3, p. 518-534, Apr. 2009] and “Adsorption Refrigeration Working Pairs: The State-of-the-Art in the Application,” [A. N. Shmroukh, A. H. H. Ali, and A. K. Abel-rahman, Int. J. Chem. Nucl. Metall. Mater. Eng., vol. 7, no. 11, p. 453-465, 2013].
- the choice of the reactive couple i.e. the couple formed by the coolant and the sorbent, the implementation of the sorbent in the reactor, the operating conditions imposed and the sizing of the complete system, directly impact the performance of the system. .
- a reactive matrix for the sorption/desorption of a heat transfer fluid, preferably ammonia, in a reactor of a cold production device comprises a mixture of sorbent and expanded graphite, preferably an expanded natural graphite (ENG).
- the sorbent is a salt of the manganese chloride type.
- the matrix comprises a proportion of sorbent comprised between 76% and 82%, preferably approximately 79%, of the mass of sorbent material, the GNE forming substantially the whole of the complement at 100%.
- the matrix is compacted so that the apparent mass of the GNE is between 100 kg/m3 and 130 kg/m3, preferably about 120 kg/m3.
- a reactive wafer for the sorption/desorption of a heat transfer fluid, preferably ammonia, in a reactor of a cold production device consists of a matrix according to the invention, compact.
- a heat transfer fluid preferably ammonia
- it has a cylindrical shape around an axis and comprises a substantially coaxial internal passage.
- such a wafer has an outside diameter comprised between 100 and 110 mm, preferably equal to approximately 106 mm, and the conduit has a diameter comprised between 17 and 23 mm, preferably approximately equal to 20 mm, and the wafer has a substantially constant axial thickness of between 40 and 50 mm, preferably equal to approximately 46.5 mm.
- a process for manufacturing a cake according to the invention, the sorbent being hydrated manganese chloride comprises a preliminary step of drying, preferably by stoving, to obtain a manganese chloride salt whose the water content is close to 0.1 mole per mole of salt, or less than this value.
- Such a method may include a step of mixing manganese chloride monohydrate with expanded graphite in selected proportions and a step of compacting said mixture.
- the compacting step can further comprise an optional manual compacting step and a mechanical compacting step.
- a method for manufacturing a reactor comprises a step of arranging, in a casing of the reactor, one or more wafers manufactured according to the invention.
- Such a method advantageously comprises an additional drying step by forming an air vacuum in the casing and, preferably, by heating this casing to a temperature close to 180° C., in order to extract water from the monohydrated salt. , preferably until the degree of hydration is lowered to a value close to zero mole of water for one mole of manganese chloride.
- FIG. 1 is a schematic view in axial section of a reactive wafer according to the invention
- FIG. 2 is a photo view of an expanded natural graphite (ENG) vermicule used to form the reactive matrix for the wafer of Figure 1;
- FIG. 3 is a flowchart illustrating a method of preparing the wafer of Figure 1.
- FIG. 1 illustrates a view in axial section of a wafer 1 according to the invention, formed from a reactive matrix 2 according to the invention.
- the wafer 1 has a cylindrical shape around an axis X, with an outer diameter D7 and an axial thickness E4 less than the outer diameter D7 It comprises a cylindrical passage 3 axially crossing around the axis X.
- the passage 3 connects two opposite axial planar faces 4.
- the passage 3 is delimited by a cylindrical inner surface 6, of diameter D6.
- the wafer 1 is delimited externally by a cylindrical outer surface 7 of diameter D7.
- the wafer has a radial thickness ER equal to (D7-D6)/2.
- a reactor is made up of several wafers stacked along the X axis, fitted in an envelope whose walls isolate them from the external environment. This envelope is not shown in the figures.
- the evaporated fluid in the cold production phase, is brought in gaseous form FG inside the passage 3 and absorbed along F 1 by the wafer 1, through of the inner wall 6.
- a sorption of this gas FG is carried out by the matrix 2. This sorption produces heat, evacuated along Cl through the outer surface 7 of the wafer, then through the walls of this envelope, towards the external environment.
- Such a system delivers a cooling power is directly linked to the quality of the mass and heat transfers within the matrix 2.
- the reagent is mixed with a binder to obtain a material consolidated composite sufficiently porous, elastic and highly conductive of heat.
- the porosity is important, since to ensure a good mass yield of the wafer, the gas FG must be distributed throughout the matrix, over the radial thickness ER.
- the matrix 2 must be sufficiently elastic to be able to undergo the strong changes in temperature and volume resulting from the sorption reactions.
- the thermal conductivity must be sufficient, because too high a temperature of the matrix would lead to a slowing down or even a stoppage of the sorption.
- the binder can reduce the permeability of the matrix 2 and limit the circulation of gas therein. Similarly, the swelling of the sorbent grains during sorption also gradually decreases their porosity.
- the refrigerant used is ammonia (NH3).
- the sorbent is a manganese chloride of formula MnCl 2 .
- the binder is an expanded natural graphite (ENG). Indeed, manganese chloride is particularly hydrophilic
- the GNE is generally in the form of vermicules 10 of diameter D10; the diameter D10 is generally between 0.2 and 0.4 millimeters.
- the length of a vermicule can reach 6 millimeters.
- the vermicules have an accordion shape, a low density and a large specific surface.
- the density of raw GNE as supplied is in the range of 6 to 9 kilograms per cubic meter.
- the specific surface is of the order of 40 to 60 square meters per kilogram.
- the sorbent, here manganese chloride has the form of solid grains which swell or deflate depending on the stage of sorption or desorption of the ammonia gas FG.
- the grain size (granulometry) of sorbent has a significant influence on the rate of transformation and the thermal parameters of the wafer. This is related to the interaction between salt and GNE which is different depending on the grain size of the salt.
- the heat transfer coefficient by convection increases when the size of the grains increases; it is therefore necessary to choose a particle size adapted to the sorption process.
- the very small salt grains less than fifty microns (50 ⁇ m) manage to fit inside the GNE vermicules, the contact surface between the sorbent and the GNE is greater and the GNE matrix consolidated follows more volumetric variations of swelling and shrinkage of grains of salt. Nevertheless, these small-sized grains cause the reagent to detach from the exchange surface and risk being carried away by the gas flows, which can cause clogging of the circuit between the evaporator and the reactor. .
- the grains advantageously have a size, measured by sieving or micro-sieving, of between twenty and one hundred and fifty microns (20 ⁇ m and 150 ⁇ m).
- a second drying is carried out in order to lower the hydration rate, preferably to around zero mole of water for one mole of manganese chloride.
- the second drying is carried out by putting the inside of the envelope in air depression, while heating the envelope to a temperature close to 180 degrees centigrade to within plus or minus 5 degrees centigrade. Heating is optional; nevertheless, this vacuum extraction process associated with heating allows the last traces of water contained in the salt to be removed.
- this second drying comprises the following steps:
- the air pressure inside the casing is lowered, preferably at least to about 200 micro-bars, and the casing is heated to about 180°C; then,
- the air pressure inside the envelope is lowered, preferably at least to around 70 micro-bars.
- the circuit is filled and the reagent is saturated with the refrigerant, here ammonia.
- the manganese chloride grains swell as the refrigerant is sorbed, at the risk of progressively clogging the pores of the matrix, which would quickly cause the efficiency of the system to drop.
- a matrix comprising a mixture of solvent grains with a binder such as GNE makes it possible to significantly limit clogging and maintain sufficient permeability.
- the matrix contains a proportion a mass proportion of approximately 79% manganese chloride and 21% GNE, the mixture being compacted until a density of 571 kg/m3 is obtained. In the mixture thus compacted there is therefore about 120 kg of GNE per cubic meter. In these conditions, it appears that the permeability of the matrix remains optimal throughout the sorption/desorption reactions.
- the permeability remains sufficient when the proportion of manganese chloride is between 76% and 82% and the apparent density of the GNE, after compacting, is between 100 kg/m3 and 130 kg/m3.
- the reactive matrix forms a pancake whose dimensions are as follows:
- the sorbent salt (MnCh) monohydrate is steamed (step 101) until a salt is obtained whose water content is approximately 0.1 mole of water per mole of salt. This salt thus dried is then used (step 102) and the GNE (step 103) and they are mixed together in the chosen proportions (step 104).
- step 105 manual compacting is carried out in order to form a blank wafer (step 105), then mechanical compacting is carried out (step 106) in order to obtain the wafer in its final dimensions.
- the blank has substantially the radial dimensions D6, D7 of the final wafer and the compaction is done axially, that is to say in the direction of the axis X, in order to obtain the desired axial thickness E4.
- the mechanical compaction is advantageously carried out using a hydraulic piston, at a pressure of between 20 and 40 bars, preferably close to 30 bars.
- the manual compaction step is optional.
- Steps 105 and 106 are repeated in order to produce a desired number of wafers for the production of a reactor, and these wafers are arranged in the envelope of the reactor (step 107).
- step 108 additional drying is carried out (step 108), by forming an air vacuum in the envelope while heating this envelope.
- This additional drying makes it possible to remove the water present in the envelope or in the circuit of a cold production machine to which the envelope would be connected.
- This additional drying also makes it possible to extract an excess of water which could have rehydrated the salt, until the hydration rate is reduced to a value preferably close to zero mole of water for one mole of manganese chloride, or to a lower value.
- the dimensions of the wafers may be different from those previously described.
- the outer diameter of a wafer can advantageously be between forty millimeters and two hundred millimeters; it can also be greater than two hundred millimetres.
- a matrix in the form of a “binder plus sorbent” composite in a consolidated form is not very sensitive to mechanical vibrations; it is therefore particularly suitable for use for producing cold in a vehicle, in particular for the road transport of goods.

A review on adsorption working pairs for refrigeration,” [L. W. Wang, R. Z. Wang, and R. G. Oliveira, Renew. Sustain. Energy Rev., vol. 13, no. 3, pp. 518-534, Apr. 2009] et “Adsorption Refrigeration Working Pairs: The State-of-the-Art in the Application,” [A. N. Shmroukh, A. H. H. Ali, and A. K. Abel-rahman, Int. J. Chem. Nucl. Metall. Mater. Eng., vol. 7, no. 11, pp. 453-465, 2013].
Des modes de réalisation et des variantes seront décrits ci-après, à titre d’exemples non limitatifs, avec référence aux dessins annexés dans lesquels : [Fig. 1] est une vue schématique en coupe axiale d’une galette réactive selon l’invention ;
- une élasticité qui permet de maintenir de bons contacts entre le GNE et le sorbant, ainsi qu’entre la matrice et les parois de l’enveloppe du réacteur ;
- D6 compris entre 17 et 23 mm, de préférence égal à environ 20 mm ;
