Description

LOUDSPEAKER LAMP UNIT WITH SOUND REFLECTING PLATE
Field of the invention
The present invention relates to acoustics and to loudspeakers, more specifically to a loudspeaker lamp unit and to a method for assembling a loudspeaker lamp unit.
Background art
With the advance in technology, loudspeakers as they are commonly known are developing into devices that not only provides the acoustical performance that is desired but that also functions as an independent unit which removes the need for a dedicated amplifier. I.e. , active loudspeakers with integrated amplifiers and which allows wireless and/or wired connection of a mobile device such as a telephone are becoming more popular.
Such devices provide many benefits in terms of allowing more aesthetically pleasing appearances to the loudspeakers and further facilitates positioning of the loudspeakers as it does not have to be connected to any separate amplifier.
It is generally desired that speakers and sound systems are integrated into the home such that they form part of a furniture arrangement. As a part of enabling this, devices such as combined loudspeaker and lamp units (e.g. IKEA SYMFONISK Table lamp) have been introduced. However, providing a loudspeaker that should also function as a lamp may generate certain problems in achieving the satisfactory performance from the loudspeaker. It is thus desired to provide an improved combined loudspeaker and lamp unit.
Summary of the invention
In view of that stated above, the object of the present invention is to provide a combined loudspeaker lamp unit that ameliorates at least some of the problems with prior art solutions. It is further an object to provide a method for assembling a loudspeaker lamp unit. To achieve at least one of the above objects and also other objects that will be evident from the following description, there is provided according to the present invention a loudspeaker lamp unit comprising: a base comprising a loudspeaker arranged inside the base and a lamp socket arranged at a top of the base being configured to receive a light source, a lamp shade releasably attached to the top of the base, and a sound reflecting plate arranged at the top of the base and configured to reflect sound from the loudspeaker emitted in a direction towards the lamp shade. The sound reflecting plate thus effectively reduces the risk of interference and dampening of sound waves by the lamp shade which could otherwise detrimentally affect the performance of the loudspeaker. The base and the function of the loudspeaker is thus made more independent of the lampshade provided to the loudspeaker lamp unit, which facilitates for a user to modify the loudspeaker lamp unit by replacing and selecting a desired lamp shade to be arranged on the base.
The sound reflecting plate may have a radial extension in relation to a central axis from a bottom of the base to the top of the base that is essentially equal to or larger than a radial extension of the base in relation to the central axis, thus ensuring that a sufficient amount of the sound emitted from the loudspeaker is reflected away from the lamp shade.
The sound reflecting plate may have a radial extension in relation to a central axis from a bottom of the base to the top of the base that is less than a radial extension of the lamp shade in relation to the central axis A.
The sound reflecting plate may be formed from a plastic material such as PET or PMMA. The sound reflecting plate may further be permeable to light to facilitate light emission from the light source and to avoid the sound reflecting plate causing shadows to form.
The sound reflecting plate may have a thickness of 1 mm to 3 mm, preferably 2 mm.
The sound reflecting plate may comprise a through hole through which the lamp socket is insertable, thus facilitating assembly of the loudspeaker lamp unit. The sound reflecting plate may further comprise a top dampening layer on a top surface thereof and a bottom dampening layer on a bottom surface thereof. The top and bottom dampening layers functions as anti-vibration gaskets and thus reduces the risk of vibrations from the loudspeaker causing noises forming from movement between the sound reflecting plate and adjacent components of the loudspeaker lamp unit.
The top dampening layer and/or the bottom dampening layer may cover a respective area on the top surface and the bottom surface respectively that is smaller than a total surface area of the top surface and of the bottom surface respectively, thus reducing the risk of the top and bottom dampening layers negatively affecting the sound emitted by the loudspeaker.
The loudspeaker lamp unit may further comprise a locking member configured to lockingly attach the lamp shade and the sound reflecting plate to the base. A support structure of the lamp shade may be arranged to abut the bottom dampening layer and the locking member may be arranged to abut the top dampening layer. The locking member thus secures and arranges the sound reflecting plate and the lamp shade correctly in relation to the base.
A width of the top dampening layer may correspond to a width of a contact surface of the locking member and a width of the bottom dampening layer may corresponds to a width of a contact surface of the support structure of the lamp shade. The top and bottom dampening layers will thus not protrude outside of the respective contact surfaces and thus not negatively affect (e.g. dampen or attenuate) the sound emitted from the loudspeaker. Moreover, sufficient dampening is achieved by the top and bottom dampening layers as they cover the width of their respective contact surfaces on the locking member and on the support structure of the lamp shade respectively. By reducing the area of the dampening layer, a cost efficient solution may be achieved.
The top dampening layer and the bottom dampening layer may be formed from ethylene-vinyl acetate.
The lamp shade may comprise a support structure supporting a fabric shade. The loudspeaker lamp unit may further comprise a locking member configured to lockingly attach the lamp shade and the sound reflecting plate to the base.
In a second aspect is a method for assembling a loudspeaker lamp unit provided. The method comprises: arranging a support structure of a lamp shade to a lamp shade support structure of a base arranged at a top of the base, the base comprising a loudspeaker arranged inside the base, arranging a sound reflecting plate to the top of the base, locking the sound reflecting plate and the lamp shade to the base using a locking member.
The method may further comprise: attaching a light source to a lamp socket of the base, the lamp socket being arranged at the top of the base.
The sound reflecting plate may be attached to the support structure of the lamp shade by means of an adhesive prior to arranging the sound reflecting plate to the top of the base. The sound reflecting plate and the lamp shade may thus form a preassembled unit, facilitating assembly of the loudspeaker lamp unit. Moreover, the desired relative orientation between the lamp shade and the sound reflecting plate can thus be more reliably controlled.

Description of embodiments
The present invention will now be described more fully hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which currently preferred embodiments of the invention are shown. This invention may, however, be embodied in many different forms and should not be construed as limited to the embodiments set forth herein; rather, these embodiments are provided for thoroughness and completeness, and fully convey the scope of the invention to the skilled person.
Figure 1 discloses a loudspeaker lamp unit 100, i.e. a combined loudspeaker and lighting device. The loudspeaker lamp unit 100 comprise a lamp shade 104. The lamp shade 104 is releasably attached to a base 102 and is thus replaceable. The lamp shade 104 may be formed by a number of different materials such as fabric and/or plastic and/or metals or combinations thereof. It should be noted that the present disclosure may be advantageous for all types of lamp shades that may have a negative influence (e.g. a dampening effect) of the quality of audio emitted by the loudspeaker lamp unit 100.
The base 102 forms the structural portion of the loudspeaker lamp unit 100 to which the lamp shade 104 is attachable. The base 102 preferably comprises a loudspeaker 108 (shown in Fig. 2) having one or several loudspeaker element(s) (not shown). The loudspeaker lamp unit 100 Is preferably wirelessly and/or with wired connection connectable to a remote source such as a mobile device and/or a computer and may thus comprise an audio amplifier arranged in the base 102 provided with a wireless communications interface (not illustrated). Examples of such a wireless communication interface may be Bluetooth® or Wifi® or another similar wireless communication interface.
The loudspeaker lamp unit 100 may thus be configured to receive streaming audio from the remote source which is subsequently emitted as soundwaves by means of the loudspeaker 108 of the base 102. A battery (not shown) may be provided in the base 102, the battery may be configured to provide electric power to components of the loudspeaker lamp unit 100. Moreover, the loudspeaker lamp unit 100 may be operably connected to receive power from a mains cable (not shown), which may further be configured to provide electric power to be stored in the battery. One or several buttons may be provided on the base 102 for controlling the loudspeaker lamp unit 100 and for instance for wireless pairing with another device (e.g. a remote source as described above or to another loudspeaker lamp unit).
As is common with lighting devices, it may be desired for a user to be able to replace the lamp shade in order to alter the appearance thereof. However, in doing so, the user may for prior art combined loudspeaker lamp units inadvertently affect the acoustic properties for the loudspeaker. The lamp shade may reflect, interfere and/or dampen sound emitted from the speaker elements of the base. To reduce this problem, and to facilitate adaptation of the appearance of the loudspeaker lamp unit 100 without affecting the acoustic properties thereof, a sound reflecting plate 106 is according to the teachings herein provided. The sound reflecting plate 106 is configured to reflect sound from the base 102 away from the lamp shade 104 such that the loudspeaker lamp unit 100 is independent of the type of lamp shade 104 that is attached thereto and thus more flexible for modification, more reliable and more robust in its performance. Fig. 2 shows a perspective view of the base 102. The base 102 is preferably cylindrically shaped but may be provided with another shape as well. The base 102 is intended to function as a housing for the electrical components of the loudspeaker lamp unit 100 and as a foot forming a stable stand such that the loudspeaker lamp unit 100 remains upright in a secure manner.
The base 102 comprises a lamp socket 110 arranged at a top 112 of the base 102, the lamp socket 110 being configured to receive a light source 142 (shown in Fig. 6). The lamp socket 110 is preferably a conventional edison screw light socket, into which a suitable light source 142 such as a LED bulb may be attached.
The base 102 further comprises a lamp shade support structure 114. The lamp shade support structure 114 may be formed as a cylindrical shelflike protrusion around the circumference of the lamp socket 110. The lamp shade support structure 114 is configured to vertically support the lamp shade 104 and form a base which provides a desired orientation of the lamp shade 104 and of the sound reflecting plate 106.
The lamp shade 104, shown in Fig. 4, comprises a support structure 130 which is intended to be oriented such that it abuts directly or indirectly against the lamp shade support structure 114 of the base 102.
The base 102 may be provided with a cover, for instance made from a fabric material that is permeable for air such that sound from the loudspeaker 108 can be effectively transmitted therethrough.
Sound is, as mentioned, emitted from the loudspeaker 108 of the base 102 and is spread in a horizontal direction and in a vertical direction to a certain degree, which among other things depends on the frequency of the sound and on the shape, size and distribution of apertures in the base 108 through which the sound is emitted. However, when the lamp shade 104 is arranged on the base 102, some of the sound emitted by the loudspeaker 108 could potentially end up being dampened or in other ways affected by the lampshade 104. The sound reflecting plate 106 is configured to reflect the sound emitted from the loudspeaker 108 in the base 102 such that as little sound as possible becomes affected by the lamp shade 104. The sound reflecting plate 106 is shown in a top view in Fig. 3a and in a bottom view in Fig. 3b.
The sound reflecting plate 106 is preferably horizontally arranged, i.e. perpendicularly to a central axis A of the loudspeaker lamp unit 100, on top of the base 102. The sound reflecting plate 106 could however be arranged at an angle in relation to the central axis A that is not perpendicular, for instance to allow a greater vertical spread of the sound emitted from the base 102.
The sound reflecting plate 106 may be provided with a shape that essentially corresponds to the shape of the base 102. In the embodiment shown in Figures 2-3b, the base 102 is cylindrically shaped with a circular cross-section with varying diameter with varying height. The sound reflecting plate 106 is accordingly provided with a symmetrical circular shape.
Other shapes are however considered for the sound reflecting plate 106, such as for instance rectangular, elliptical or oval to name a few.
The sound reflecting plate 106 may also be non-symmetrically shaped. For instance, the base 102 may be provided with a loudspeaker(s) 108 that is configured to emit sound in certain direction. In such an embodiment, the sound reflecting plate 106 may be shaped such that it forms a circular segment having an angular extension corresponding to the horizontal angle with which the sound is emitted from the base 102. For example, if sound is emitted from the base 102 with a horizontal distribution angle of a maximum of 180°, the sound reflecting plate 106 may be formed by a circular segment having a horizontal angle approximately 180°. This may be beneficial to save material as there is no need for reflection of sound on the other half of the base 102. Similar arrangements are of course possible even in embodiments in which the sound reflecting plate 106 is not round.
The sound reflecting plate 106 preferably comprises a through hole 118 through which the lamp socket 110 is insertable. The through hole 118 thus has a diameter corresponding to or slightly larger than the diameter of the outer diameter of the lamp socket 110. The through hole 118 may further be slight smaller than the diameter of the lamp socket 110 to provdide a press-fit connection between the sound reflecting plate 106 and the base 102. The sound reflecting plate 106 may have a radial extension in relation to a central axis A from a bottom 116 of the base 102 to the top 112 of the base 102, shown in Figs 2-3b, that is essentially equal to or larger than a radial extension of the base 102 in relation to the central axis A. The central axis A is defined as a central axis A through each of the components of the loudspeaker lamp unit 100. The sound reflecting plate 106 having a radial extension, i.e. a radius from the central axis A, equal to or larger than the radius of the base 102 allows most of the sound emitted from the base 102 to be reflected away from the lamp shade 104 by the sound reflecting plate 106.
Preferably, the sound reflecting plate 106 has a radial extension in relation to the central axis A that is less than a radial extension of the lamp shade 104 in relation to the central axis A. It is generally not preferred that the sound reflecting plate 106 extends radially beyond the lamp shade 104, as it may result in an undesired aesthetic appearance to the loudspeaker lamp unit 100.
The sound reflecting plate 106 is preferably formed from a plastic material such as PET (Polyethylene terephthalate) or PMMA (Poly methyl methacrylate acrylic, acrylic glass, or plexiglass). Other materials are however also considered, such as glass, metals or composite materials. The sound reflecting plate 106 preferably has a thickness of 1 mm to 3 mm, preferably 2 mm.
The sound reflecting plate 106 may be made from a material that is to a certain degree permeable for light, i.e. not opaque. The sound reflecting plate 106 will thus affect the light emitted from the light source 142 to a lesser degree. The sound reflecting plate 106 may be configured to disperse light emitted from the light source 142, for instance by being provided with a structured top surface 122 and/or a structured bottom surface 126 of the sound reflecting plate 106.
The sound reflecting plate 106 may comprise a top dampening layer 120 on the top surface 122 thereof and a bottom dampening layer 124 on the bottom surface 126 thereof, as is shown in Figures 3a and 3b respectively. The dampening layers 120, 124 are more elastic and softer than the rest of the sound reflecting plate 106, thus reducing the risk of undesired vibrations from the loudspeaker 108 of the base 102 giving rise to noices forming between the sound reflecting plate 106 and adjacent components of the loudspeaker lamp unit 100. The top and bottom dampening layers 120, 124 thus functions as anti-vibration gaskets for the sound reflecting plate 106.
The top and bottom dampening layers 120, 124 are preferably formed from EVA (ethylene-vinyl acetate), which provides suitable material properties. However, other similar materials could also be used as is realized by one skilled in the art.
The top and bottom dampening layers 120, 124 may be separately formed from the sound reflecting plate 106 and attached thereto by means of an adhesive or by a bonding operating such as thermal bonding. The top and bottom dampening layers 120, 124 may be formed by tape and be attached to the sound reflecting tape 106 by means of an adhesive.
The top and bottom dampening layers 120, 124 may further be integrally formed with the sound reflecting plate 106.
The top and bottom dampening layers 120, 124 are configured to abut against components of the loudspeaker lamp unit 100 adjacent to the sound reflecting plate 106. The top dampening layer 120 and/or the bottom dampening layer 124 should cover a respective area on the top surface 122 and the bottom surface 126 respectively that is smaller than a total surface area of the top surface 122 and of the bottom surface 126 respectively to avoid dampening sound emitted by the loudspeaker 108. Preferably, the top and bottom dampening layers 120, 124 have a respective width W1 , W2 which essentially corresponds to the respective contact surfaces of the components of the loudspeaker lamp unit 100 which abuts against the sound reflecting plate 106, such that the top and bottom dampening layers 120, 124 are covered by the adjacent components abutting against the sound reflecting plate 106.
In Figure 4, the lamp shade 104 is seen in a top view. The lamp shade 104 may as shown comprise a support structure 130 which is arranged to abut the bottom dampening layer 124. The support structure 130 may be annularly formed, thus comprising a central hole 140. A frame associated with the support structure 130 may be provided, the frame supporting the material of the lamp shade 104, e.g. a fabric shade 144 or similar, in a conventional manner. The support structure 130 is preferably arranged such that it abuts against the lamp shade support structure 114 (see Fig, 2).
In one embodiment, the sound reflecting plate 106 is attached to the support structure 130 by means of an adhesive such as tape or glue. The sound reflecting plate 106 and the lamp shade 104 could thus be considered a unit, faciltating assembly of the loudspeaker lamp unit 100. Preferably, the sound reflecting plate 106 is attached such that the bottom dampening layer 124 thereof is attached to the contact surface 132 of the support structure 130 of the lamp shade 104. The sound reflecting plate 106 is thus attached to the upwards facing side of the support structure 130. It is however also possible that the sound reflecting plate 106 is attached to the downwards facing side of the support structure 130, such that the upper dampening layer 120 of the sound reflecting plate 106 is attached to the support structure 130 of the lamp shade 104. The contact surface 132 may thus be the oppositely facing surface of that shown in Figure 4.
In Figure 5 is a locking member 128 shown. The locking member 128 may be configured to be threaded onto the lamp socket 110, to an external thread thereof (not shown). The locking member 128 may thus form a nut which holds the lamp shade 104 and the sound reflecting plate 106 in place against the base 102. The locking member 128 is arranged to abut the top dampening layer 120 of the sound reflecting plate 106.
With reference to Figs 3 to 5, the top dampening layer 120 has a width W1 in a radial direction of the sound reflecting plate 106 in relation to the central axis A. The width W1 should preferably correspond to a width W4 of a contact surface 134 of the locking member 128. The top dampening layer 120 will thus not extend radially past the contact surface 134 of the locking member 128 and thus not dampen sound emitted by the loudspeaker 108 of the base 102.
The bottom dampening layer 124 has a width W2 in a radial direction that corresponds to a width W3 of a contact surface 132 of the support structure 130 of the lamp shade 104. The respective contact surfaces 132, 134 of the locking member 128 and the support structure 130 are to be considered as the portion of the locking member 128 and the support structure 130 of the lamp shade 104 respectively that is configured to be in contact with the sound reflecting plate 106, or more specifically with the top and bottom dampening layers 120, 124 thereof.
Turning now to Figures 6 and 7 which discloses an exploded view of a loudspeaker lamp unit 100 and to a schematic flowchart of a method 1000 for assembling a loudspeaker lamp unit 100 respectively.
The base 102 is firstly provided onto which the support structure 130 of the lamp shade 104 is arranged 1001. The support structure 130 is arranged 1001 on the lamp shade support structure 114 of the base 102.
The sound reflecting plate 106 is arranged to the top 112 of the base 102. It is to be realized that the sound reflecting plate 106 can be arranged 1002 directly against the lamp shade support structure 114 of the base 102. The support structure 130 of the lamp shade 104 may then be arranged 1001 on top of the sound reflecting plate 106.
The sound reflecting plate 106 is arranged 1002 around the lamp socket 110 with the lamp socket 110 arranged in the through hole 118 of the sound reflecting plate 106.
The sound reflecting plate 106 and the lamp shade 104 can then be locked 1003 to the base 102 by means of the locking member 128. The sound reflecting plate 106 and the lamp shade 104 are thus firmly secured and held in their respective desired position in relation to the base 102.
In one embodiment, the sound reflecting plate 106 is attached to the support structure 130 of the lamp shade 104 by means of an adhesive prior to arranging 1002 the sound reflecting plate 106 to the top 112 of the base 102. The sound reflecting plate 106 can thus be provided with the lamp shade 104 as a unit which faciltates assembly of the loudspeaker lamp unit 100. The adhesive may be an adhesive tape and/or a glue. Preferably, as mentioned, the sound reflecting plate 106 is attached with the bottom dampening layer 124 facing the contact surface 132 of the support structure 130 of the lamp shade 104. In other words, such that the sound reflecting plate 106 is arranged on top of the support structure 130 of the lamp shade 104.
A suitable light source 142, such as a LED-light source, may subsequently be attached to the lamp socket 110.
Consequently is a loudspeaker lamp unit 100 provided in which the effect of the lamp shade 104 on the sound emitted from the base 102 is reduced. The sound reflecting plate 106 effectively reflects sound transmitted by the loudspeaker 108 of the base 102 that would otherwise be dampened or interferred by interaction with the lamp shade 104. The base 102 thus effectively becomes acoustically isolated from the lamp shade 104, which thus allows replacing the lamp shade 104 without affecting the performance of the loudspeaker 108.
As evident from the above, the sound reflecting plate 106 may in order to reduce cost and complexity be dimensioned to fit with standard dimensions of adjacent components of the loudspeaker lamp unit 100. For instance, the lamp socket 110 may be provided with different dimensions depending on the type of light bulb thread (e.g. E14, E27 etc) that it is intended for. This applies accordingly to the lamp shade support structure 114, to the support structure 130 of the lamp shade 104 and to the locking member 128 which may all be provided with standard dimensions corresponding to the size of the lamp socket 110 and the sound reflecting plate 106 may be dimensioned accordingly. The sound reflecting plate 106 may thus be provided also to existing loudspeaker lamp units.
It will be appreciated that the present invention is not limited to the embodiments shown. Several modifications and variations are thus conceivable within the scope of the invention which thus is exclusively defined by the appended claims.
