Definitions
- This application relates to the field of disinfectant preparations.
- the present application relates to disinfectant formulations for air and surfaces.
- Gaseous disinfection has been deployed in medical sectors for years. It involves the process of removal of microorganisms using chemical bactericidal agents in an indoor environment. Recently, gaseous disinfection has also been used in residential and commercial areas but, due to the safety issue, this process must be conducted by trained personnel that limits its usage. Accordingly, improved gaseous disinfectant formulations are highly desired.
- the present invention provides a microbicidal, including but not limited to virus, bacteria and fungi, disinfectant formulation and the method of using the same.
- the invention relates to an aqueous disinfectant formulation
- an aqueous disinfectant formulation comprising chlorite/chlorate-originated chlorine dioxide, a phytoncide and organic acid, a surfactant sufficient to form a solution or dispersion and sufficient water to make 100 weight percent.
- the disinfectant formulation may be applied for air and surface disinfection by using sprayer or diffuser or humidifier.
- a disinfectant composition comprising one or more chlorine-containing compounds that can generated chlorine dioxide in solution form; one or more natural phytoncide compounds; one or more organic acids; one or more surfactants; and water.
- the chlorine-containing compounds is selected from one or more of chlorite, chlorate and chlorine dioxide.
- the one or more chlorine-containing compounds can generate a dissolved form of chlorine dioxide selected from the group consisting of chlorite, chlorate and chlorine dioxide in the range of 0.01%to 10%by weight.
- the one or more phytoncide compounds is selected from, but not limited to, ⁇ -Pinene, ⁇ -myrcene, Limonene, Thujone, Linalool, 2- (2-Methoxyethoxy) ethanol, p-tert-Butylcyclohexylacetate, ⁇ -Terpineol, 2-Methyl-2butenoic acid, Benzyl alcohol, Phenol, Isoamyl salicylate, Cedrol, Glycerin and isoprene in the range of 0.01%to 10%by weight.
- the one or more organic acids is selected from citric acid, lactic acid, malic acid, oxalic acid and tartaric acid in the range of 0.01%to 10%by weight.
- the one or more surfactants is in the range of 0.01%to 10%by weight.
- surfactants include detergent, soap, and quaternary ammonium compounds.
- this invention provides methods of killing air and surface microorganisms by using sprayers, diffusers, humidifiers or nebulizers.
- a method of using a disinfectant composition described herein with diffusers or humidifiers to optimize the dispersion, contact time, disinfectant concentration in air and surface, and area.
- the disinfectant composition allows safe, long-lasting and cost-effective residential and commercial uses.
- the disinfectant composition can be released from the aqueous phase to the gaseous phase. Such embodiments are effective not only for surface disinfection but also for air disinfection.
- the disinfectant composition due to the disinfectant composition’s high selectivity property, low-oxidizing power and controlled concentration, the disinfectant composition does not damage the surface of textiles, plastics, furniture and walls.
- the advantage of using a nebulizing process over the use of gas releasing process is that in the nebulizing process every droplet has a constant concentration of disinfectant chlorine dioxide, which dissolves readily in water, over the entire spraying time. Chlorine dioxide content propagates via droplets into the environment while water evaporates, providing disinfection function in the air. Since the disinfectant chlorine dioxide is in gaseous form, it can penetrate deeply into building cavities, wall cavities and other hard to access areas and therefore provide better sterilization function compared with liquid or solid disinfectant
- Disinfectant formulations of the present disclosure such as those including chlorine dioxide and phytoncide, have unexpected outstanding technical effects.
- the disinfectant compositions provide strong and instant microbicidal effects and at the same time protect the disinfected hard surface from bacteria, fungi and insect growth. Only certain types of phytoncides and surfactants, made using specific mixing processes and having specific ratios of each compound, when used in combination with chlorine dioxide, can achieve the mentioned outstanding unexpected technical effects.
- Fig. 1 is a schematic diagram showing how a phenolic anion reacts with ClO 2 to produce a phenoxyl radical and ClO 2 - .
- chlorine dioxide in the claimed disinfectant composition acts as a mild oxidizing agent to oxidize proteins, lipids and carbohydrates, leading to cell wall and membrane disruption.
- chlorine dioxide in the claimed disinfectant composition reacts with microbial cells leading to the disruption of cell walls and membranes, which culminates in cell death or loss of infectivity. Specifically, it reacts with fatty acids and amino acids, especially tryptophan, cysteine and tyrosine, to cause loss of protein and enzyme structure and function.
- phytoncide in the claimed disinfectant composition inactivates microbes by disrupting cell membrane, and hence leads to disruption of the proton motive force, leakage of cytoplasmic materials and eventual cell lysis. It is also a general cell poison which leads to protein coagulation, cell wall disintegration, and inhibition of RNA, DNA, protein, and carbohydrate synthesis in bacteria and fungi.
- hypochlorous acid HOCl
- phenolic compounds which is a type of phytoncide compounds.
- the mechanism is shown in Figure 1 that the phenolic anion reacts with ClO 2 to produce a phenoxyl radical and ClO 2 - .
- the resulting phenoxyl radical undergoes a very fast subsequent reaction with ClO 2 , resulting in p-benzoquinone and HOCl.
- the HOCl in the claimed disinfectant composition acts as an active agent for bacterial inactivation and demonstrates surprisingly greater chlorine activity compared to OCl-ions.
- the HOCl reacts irreversibly with membrane proteins and disrupts oxidative phosphorylation, especially in Gram negative bacteria, causing morphological change, and altering cell permeability, affecting membrane-associated enzyme activities and hence bacterial viability.
- hypochlorous acid also induces chlorination of nucleotide bases, thus, inhibiting DNA and protein synthesis in bacteria.
- HOCl in the claimed disinfectant composition directly degrades poliovirus RNA into fragments.
- disinfectant compositions having a combination of one or more phytoncide compounds and hypochlorous acid are surprisingly stable, non-volatile and possess microbicidal properties.
- the disinfectant compositions can provide an antimicrobial effect on a disinfected surface for a long period. If microbes fall on the disinfected surface, the surface will inhibit the microbes’ growth by the disinfectant composition’s disinfection mechanisms.
- the disinfectant compositions are used with sprayers, diffusers, humidifiers and nebulizers which apply the disinfection formulations to sanitize both air and hard surfaces in an indoor environment.
- the particle size of a liquid that is nebulized falls between 2 to 20 micro-meters. In certain embodiments, the particle size of a liquid that is nebulized is such that aerosols can be formed which are able to carry the disinfectant compositions to a longer distance.
- ultrasonic atomization technology is used for nebulization of the particles such that the particles can float in the air and be in contact with the shielded areas or deposits on the surfaces, ranging from cloth fiber, furniture, AHU, air conditioner walls to ceilings.
- the gas-phase chlorine dioxide and phytoncide disinfectant compositions are used with sprayers, diffusers, humidifiers and nebulizers such that they provide stronger penetration and diffusion power.
- the disinfectant compositions have surprisingly strong microbicidal effect in the air and kill viable airborne microorganisms effectively.
- Example disinfectant compositions are prepared as described in the following examples.
- Example surfactants used in the following examples may be one or more of (7R, 8S) -7- (dipropylamino) -8-methyl-tetralin-1-ol, benzalkonium chloride and Dimethyloctadecyl (3-trimethoxysilylpropyl) ammonium chloride.
