  • a tip leakage flow F L from the pressure side to the suction side through the tip clearance G not only causes reduced flow turning and torque generation, but also generates additional vortices and total pressure losses. It is therefore desirable to reduce the tip leakage flow F L and total pressure losses near the blade tip.
  • the tip floor 30 generally receives convection cooling from the internal cooling system of the blade.

  • no thermal barrier coating is generally applied on the top faces 42c, 44c of the squealer tip rails 42, 44.
  • severe oxidation may result in the squealer tip rails 42, 44 during engine operation, which may cause significant loss of the squealer tip and may widen the tip clearance G, thereby reducing turbine efficiency.
  • the turbine blade 1, including the platform 6, root 8, airfoil section 10 and the tip section 26, is formed integrally, typically via a casting process, which may limit the amount of cooling provided to the tip section 26.
  • aspects of the present disclosure address at least some of the above-mentioned technical problems in connection with reduction of tip leakage flow and providing improved tip cooling. These aspects are realized by providing a turbine blade with an additively manufactured "squealer" tip having embedded cooling channels.
