Definitions
- the invention relates to a shoulder rest for a string instrument, in particular for a violin or viola, with a support element for placing on the player's shoulder and / or chest.
- shoulder rests are detachably attached to the body of the instrument with a holding device and thus serve to make it easier for the musician to hold the instrument.
- a shoulder rest is attached to a violin or the like and forms a support surface that rests on the musician's shoulder, the instrument itself being supported at a selected level. This depends in particular on the physique, in particular the neck length, shoulder shape and violin position of the musician.
- Such shoulder rests are known for example from EP 507 994 B1 , the U.S. 4,062,695 , the DE 100 07 834 A1 , the U.S. 7,265,284 or the US 7,488,877 B2 .
- the shoulder rests can be designed with a solid base. As a rule, however, this is insufficiently shaped to match the musician's shoulder and thus individually adapted, so that usually some losses in terms of playing comfort and convenience have to be accepted.
- the solid base can also be provided with a cushion at the bottom, which rests on the musician's shoulder when the instrument is being played.
- upwardly projecting holding elements or carrying elements are attached, which carry pivotable, fork-shaped end pieces. These can be attached to the side walls of the instrument body near the base of the body.
- the base of the shoulder rest has a certain elasticity of its own, and this is used to generate a certain clamping force with which the fork-shaped end pieces grip the instrument.
- End pieces are also known in other embodiments in combination with the carrier elements, but most of them all grip the instrument with a certain clamping effect.
- shoulder rests of this type are usually made of plastic or plastic, but more recently also made of wood or on a wood base and their contour is at least approximately customized to the body shape of the player. This is intended, inter alia. This ensures that the player can play the instrument particularly comfortably and harmoniously and without impairing his concentration or his attention.
- a shoulder rest of the type mentioned is also known, with which a considerable improvement in the sonic properties of the ensemble of instrument and shoulder rest can be achieved.
- the support element of the shoulder rest is provided with a plurality of holes. With this configuration of the support element, the vibration behavior of the shoulder rest and the acoustic coupling to the vibration behavior of the instrument are inherently particularly favorable and low-interference, so that as a whole a particularly high sound quality can be achieved when playing the instrument.
- the invention is now based on the object of specifying a shoulder rest of the above-mentioned type with which an even further improved sonic quality of the ensemble of instrument and shoulder rest can be achieved.
- the support element comprises a two-dimensionally extended base body which is segmented in such a way that it forms a plurality of elements that vibrate separately from one another.
- the invention is based on the consideration that a particularly high-quality vibration behavior of the shoulder rest can be achieved in that the shoulder rest is specifically designed for the ability of a comparatively "free" oscillation.
- the aim is to keep the mutually coupled, mutually oscillating masses comparatively small.
- the support element should be subdivided into a plurality of elements or components that are not or as little as possible coupled to one another acoustically.
- the oscillating base body of the support element can be segmented.
- the desired segmentation of the support element can preferably be achieved by dividing the base body into elements which, viewed over the length of the support element, are separated from one another in essential areas and only in the edge areas, for example only in the respective end of the base body, adjacent end zones of, for example, one Length of not more than 20% of the total length of the base body, are connected to one another.
- a segmentation can be achieved by making opening slits in the base body of the support element, so that the support element of the shoulder rest is provided with a number of longitudinally extending opening slits that completely penetrate the thickness of the support element.
- the opening slots can run in a straight line or also bent or curved.
- the opening slots should preferably run in the longitudinal direction of the support element.
- the support element can basically with his Side edges run in a straight line; alternatively, however, the support element can also be adapted to the body shape of the user in the interests of high game quality and increased user-friendliness and can be designed to be twisted or twisted accordingly.
- “longitudinal direction” is essentially to be understood as a direction parallel to the side edges of the support element.
- the opening slits should be completely or almost continuously in the manner of mechanically separating elements, i. H. cut through the support element over its entire thickness.
- the number and design of the opening slits are advantageously selected appropriately with a view to the desired improvement in the sound properties.
- they can be comparatively short to comparatively long, in particular between 10% and 80% of the length of the support element in its longitudinal direction, comparatively wide to comparatively narrow, in particular with a width between 0.5 and 3mm, and be provided and dimensioned in a suitable number, in particular between 1 and 5.
- the opening slots can penetrate the base body of the support element essentially perpendicularly, that is to say with their side walls aligned parallel to the surface normal of the support element.
- the opening slits, or at least parts or areas thereof, but also with side walls inclined in comparison to the surface normal of the support element can be designed.
- the angle of inclination that is to say the angle between the respective side wall of the opening slot and the surface normal of the support element, is advantageously between 25 ° and 60 °, very particularly preferably approximately 45 °.
- the support element is provided with a combination of the aforementioned opening slots and a number of in and of itself already from the EP 27 17 255 A1 known through holes provided.
- the holes bring about a certain “transparency” or lightness from a sonic point of view, whereas the slots provide “freedom”.
- the holes are expediently arranged in so-called "hole tracks" which run along a corresponding contour line.
- the support element is thus provided with a plurality of holes which are arranged in a number of perforated tracks each running in the longitudinal direction and which completely penetrate the support element in its thickness.
- hole pattern and opening slots In such a combination of hole pattern and opening slots, these can in principle be positioned and arranged independently of the hole pattern.
- these are combined with and positioned with respect to one another, wherein advantageously a number of the opening slits each in one of the hole tracks connects two adjacent holes in the hole track.
- the respective opening slot opens into the respective hole with a rounded side edge, so that it has a certain, possibly also comparatively small, bend throughout the junction area at its side edges. In this way, the contour of the opening slot in the confluence area can be kept essentially free of corners, so that a particularly good diversion function can be achieved for the sound waves arriving in the longitudinal direction.
- the holes form a hole pattern which particularly favors the tonal properties of the ensemble of instrument and shoulder rest.
- a hole track formed by a number of main holes based on the width of the support element are arranged centrally in this and at least one hole track formed by a number of secondary holes based on the width of the support element eccentrically in this, the secondary holes each seen in the longitudinal direction of the support element are arranged approximately in the middle between two adjacent main holes.
- the support element is thus with a plurality provided by holes that form a specifically combined ensemble of main and secondary holes, and which are dimensioned and positioned in their entirety for a particularly favorable transmission of the sound within the base body.
- This particularly preferred positioning of the holes allows a number of actually divergent design goals to be taken into account: on the one hand, a particularly favorable guidance of the sound in the support element is enabled, while on the other hand the structural integrity of the support element itself is particularly stable with regard to the weaknesses caused by the holes can be held.
- one or both of these categories i. H. Main holes on the one hand and / or secondary holes on the other hand, the holes advantageously chosen to be of the same size with regard to their diameter or their area.
- a particularly favorable vibration behavior can be achieved in that the individual hole area of the main holes is approximately four times the individual hole area of the secondary holes, i.e. H. that the hole size, for example defined by the clear width of a hole, of the main holes is approximately twice the hole size of the secondary holes.
- the aforementioned choice of geometry in which the hole size of the main holes is approximately twice the hole size of the secondary holes, means that, across the width of the support element, the cross-sectional portion filled by the material of the base body in the area of the main holes is approximately just as large is the same as in the area of the secondary holes, so that particularly high-quality sound conduction properties are obtained when viewed in the longitudinal direction of the support element.
- the holes advantageously having a total area of at least 8%, preferably at least 10%, and at most 30%, preferably at most 20%, occupy the surface of the support element.
- the holes take up a total area of approximately 12.5% of the area of the support element.
- the holes are designed with sharp edges. Compared to holes with rounded edges, this enables a particularly pleasing sound to be achieved.
- a particularly harmonious and high-quality sound image can also be achieved in that the or at least some of the holes are contoured in a particularly suitable manner.
- the holes are contoured in a particularly suitable manner.
- some or all of the holes should advantageously have a shape that is elongated as seen in the longitudinal direction of the support element, so that, as seen in the longitudinal direction of the support element, they each have a greater clear width than in its transverse direction.
- the execution of the holes extending in the longitudinal direction can in particular, especially in the confluence area of the opening slots, be accompanied by a comparatively pointed contour in the area of impact of the sound waves.
- the contour of the main holes comprises a number of almost straight, comparatively slightly curved contour segments.
- the holes can, for example, essentially have a diamond, rhombus or "eye" -shaped basic shape, which - viewed in the longitudinal direction of the support element - tapers comparatively pointedly on its front and rear side (apart from roundings) and continuously on its side edges has a certain, albeit comparatively small, curvature.
- the choice of suitable geometry parameters for the support element of the shoulder rest is important.
- the cross-sectional area of the base body of the support element should be at least 60 mm 2 (especially when used as a support for a support element and / or when using hardened wood), preferably at least 75 mm 2 , and at most 210 mm mm 2 (in particular with a thickness of 7 mm and a width of 3 cm), particularly preferably at most 150 mm 2 .
- the cross-sectional area should be approximately uniform and change as little as possible over the longitudinal direction of the shoulder rest, since changes in the cross-sectional area seem to cause disturbances in the sound behavior.
- Wood, plastic or plastic is provided as a particularly preferred choice of material for the support element.
- the support element therefore also has a thickness of at least 2 mm and at most 7 mm, preferably of at least 3 mm and at most 6 mm, particularly preferably of at least 3.3 mm and at most 5 mm, and in the case of a wood version Execution in plastic or plastic a thickness of at least 1.5 mm and at most 4.5 mm.
- the width of the support element is also advantageously selected to be suitable.
- the advantages achieved with the invention are in particular that the segmented design of the support element, preferably with the opening slits, allows the support body to be broken up or separated into a plurality of relatively smaller elements on the sound side, which create a certain lightness in sound quality for the player and convey. Especially in the preferably provided combination with the hole pattern formed by additionally provided through holes, a particularly high-quality sound behavior can thus be achieved overall.
- a classical violin 1 according to FIG. 1 comprises a body 2 which forms the sound box, a neck 4 on which a fingerboard is mounted, and a Vortex box with vortices 6, the end of which is formed by a screw 8.
- the body 2 has a body bottom 10 and a surrounding bottom edge 12.
- the neck 4 of the violin 1 is connected to the body 2 via the upper end block 16.
- Other blocks that serve to stabilize the violin 1 are incorporated in the body 2.
- the strings of the violin 1 are tensioned with the aid of a tailpiece end on the upper side of the violin 1.
- the lower end block 18 is therefore very stable and firmly incorporated into the body 2.
- the upper end block 16, which carries the neck 4 and the fingerboard, is also processed in the body 2 in a stable and solid manner.
- the upper end block 16 and the neck 4 are nowadays mostly manufactured separately and glued to one another in order to meet the necessary wearing properties as well as sound and vibration properties.
- a shoulder rest 30 is provided, as shown in FIG FIG. 2 as a separate component and in FIG. 3 is shown in the assembled state attached to the body 2 of the violin 1.
- the shoulder rest 30 comprises a flat support element 32, which is intended to be placed on the shoulder and / or chest of the player and extends in a longitudinal direction L, which can be attached to the body 2 of the violin 1 and in particular to the circumferential bottom edge 12 via clamping units 36 arranged at the ends .
- the shoulder rest 30 can thus be attached directly to the body 2 of the violin 1 via the clamping units 36; alternatively, however, the additional use of an adapter piece between shoulder support 30 and body 2 could also be provided.
- the shoulder rest 30 is designed for a particularly high sonic quality of the ensemble of violin 1 and shoulder rest 30.
- the knowledge is taken into account that the shoulder rest 30 attached to the body 2 and mechanically connected to it at the holding points could influence the vibration spectrum of the body 2 as a whole and in particular its nodes and could impair the "free" development of the sound spectrum.
- the shoulder support 30 is designed to limit masses that vibrate together. This is achieved in that the two-dimensionally extended base body 34 of the support element 32 is segmented in such a way that it forms a plurality of elements that vibrate separately from one another.
- the support element 32 of the shoulder rest 30 is provided for this purpose with a number of opening slots 38 running in the longitudinal direction L and completely penetrating the thickness of the support element 32.
- the opening slits 38 are suitably selected with a view to improving the tonal properties of the violin 1 and are adapted to them.
- they are made comparatively long, and they have a length of approximately 70% of the length of the support element 32.
- they can alternatively also be comparatively short to comparatively long, in particular between 10% and 80% of the length of the support element in its longitudinal direction, comparatively wide to comparatively narrow, in particular with a width between 0.5 and 3mm, and in a suitable manner Number, in particular between 1 and 5, be provided and dimensioned.
- the opening slots 38 can penetrate the base body 34 of the support element 32 essentially perpendicularly, that is to say with their side walls 40 aligned parallel to the surface normal of the support element 32.
- the angle of inclination that is to say the angle between the respective side wall of the opening slot and the surface normal of the support element, is advantageously between 25 ° and 60 °, very particularly preferably approximately 45 °. Such an inclination of the side edges of the opening slots is achieved.
- FIG. 5 An alternative, particularly preferred embodiment of a shoulder rest 40 is shown in FIG. 5 shown, where FIG. 6th a, b each show the top view of the support element 32 of the shoulder rest 40.
- the support element 32 is provided with a number of opening slits 38 which improve the sound properties of the ensemble of violin 1 and shoulder rest 40.
- the support element 32 also has a plurality of holes 48 which completely penetrate the thickness of the support element 32 and which further improve the vibration and thus the sonic behavior of the shoulder rest 40, especially in combination with the opening slots 38.
- the holes 48 are, as shown in particular from the plan view according to FIG. FIG. 6th It is clear, arranged in hole tracks 50 each running in the longitudinal direction L of the support element 32.
- the opening slits 38 could be positioned independently of the hole pattern formed by the holes 48, but in the exemplary embodiment the holes 48 are combined with the opening slits 38 in the sense of a synergistic effect to improve the tonal properties.
- the opening slits 38 are positioned in such a way that in each case one of the opening slits 38 in one of the hole tracks 50 connects two holes 48 that are adjacent in the respective hole track 50 to one another.

Description
The invention relates to a shoulder rest for a string instrument, in particular for a violin or viola, with a support element for placing on the player's shoulder and / or chest.
String instruments, especially violins and violas, the latter also known under the term viola, are held at the end of the body between the musician's chin and shoulder when making music. However, since the distance between the player's head and the shoulder area is usually greater than the thickness of the instrument, the musician can only hold or pinch the instrument in a very uncomfortable position, so that, if at all, the instrument can be played - Impairments to the quality of the game cannot be avoided. To counteract this, so-called chin rests, also called chin rests, and shoulder rests for violins and violas were developed.
The shoulder rests can be designed with a solid base. As a rule, however, this is insufficiently shaped to match the musician's shoulder and thus individually adapted, so that usually some losses in terms of playing comfort and convenience have to be accepted. For reasons of comfort, the solid base can also be provided with a cushion at the bottom, which rests on the musician's shoulder when the instrument is being played. At the two ends of the base, upwardly projecting holding elements or carrying elements are attached, which carry pivotable, fork-shaped end pieces. These can be attached to the side walls of the instrument body near the base of the body. In order to be able to fix this type of shoulder rest firmly to the instrument, the base of the shoulder rest has a certain elasticity of its own, and this is used to generate a certain clamping force with which the fork-shaped end pieces grip the instrument. End pieces are also known in other embodiments in combination with the carrier elements, but most of them all grip the instrument with a certain clamping effect.
For a high-quality sound quality and harmony with the instrument, shoulder rests of this type are usually made of plastic or plastic, but more recently also made of wood or on a wood base and their contour is at least approximately customized to the body shape of the player. This is intended, inter alia. This ensures that the player can play the instrument particularly comfortably and harmoniously and without impairing his concentration or his attention.
The invention is now based on the object of specifying a shoulder rest of the above-mentioned type with which an even further improved sonic quality of the ensemble of instrument and shoulder rest can be achieved.
This object is achieved according to the invention in that the support element comprises a two-dimensionally extended base body which is segmented in such a way that it forms a plurality of elements that vibrate separately from one another.
The invention is based on the consideration that a particularly high-quality vibration behavior of the shoulder rest can be achieved in that the shoulder rest is specifically designed for the ability of a comparatively "free" oscillation. For this purpose, the aim is to keep the mutually coupled, mutually oscillating masses comparatively small. In order to make this possible, the support element should be subdivided into a plurality of elements or components that are not or as little as possible coupled to one another acoustically. For this purpose, the oscillating base body of the support element can be segmented.
The desired segmentation of the support element can preferably be achieved by dividing the base body into elements which, viewed over the length of the support element, are separated from one another in essential areas and only in the edge areas, for example only in the respective end of the base body, adjacent end zones of, for example, one Length of not more than 20% of the total length of the base body, are connected to one another. In particular, such a segmentation can be achieved by making opening slits in the base body of the support element, so that the support element of the shoulder rest is provided with a number of longitudinally extending opening slits that completely penetrate the thickness of the support element.
The opening slots can run in a straight line or also bent or curved. The opening slots should preferably run in the longitudinal direction of the support element. The support element can basically with his Side edges run in a straight line; alternatively, however, the support element can also be adapted to the body shape of the user in the interests of high game quality and increased user-friendliness and can be designed to be twisted or twisted accordingly. In this case, “longitudinal direction” is essentially to be understood as a direction parallel to the side edges of the support element.
In order to achieve the desired decoupling or segmentation of the support element into a plurality of separately oscillating elements, the opening slits should be completely or almost continuously in the manner of mechanically separating elements, i. H. cut through the support element over its entire thickness.
The number and design of the opening slits are advantageously selected appropriately with a view to the desired improvement in the sound properties. Depending on the design of the instrument and the other circumstances and requirements, they can be comparatively short to comparatively long, in particular between 10% and 80% of the length of the support element in its longitudinal direction, comparatively wide to comparatively narrow, in particular with a width between 0.5 and 3mm, and be provided and dimensioned in a suitable number, in particular between 1 and 5.
The opening slots can penetrate the base body of the support element essentially perpendicularly, that is to say with their side walls aligned parallel to the surface normal of the support element. Alternatively, the opening slits, or at least parts or areas thereof, but also with side walls inclined in comparison to the surface normal of the support element, can be designed. The angle of inclination, that is to say the angle between the respective side wall of the opening slot and the surface normal of the support element, is advantageously between 25 ° and 60 °, very particularly preferably approximately 45 °.
In such a combination of hole pattern and opening slots, these can in principle be positioned and arranged independently of the hole pattern. Advantageously and in the sense of a particularly desirable sonic synergy between opening slits and hole pattern, however, these are combined with and positioned with respect to one another, wherein advantageously a number of the opening slits each in one of the hole tracks connects two adjacent holes in the hole track. In a very particularly preferred embodiment, the respective opening slot opens into the respective hole with a rounded side edge, so that it has a certain, possibly also comparatively small, bend throughout the junction area at its side edges. In this way, the contour of the opening slot in the confluence area can be kept essentially free of corners, so that a particularly good diversion function can be achieved for the sound waves arriving in the longitudinal direction.
In a further particularly preferred embodiment, the holes form a hole pattern which particularly favors the tonal properties of the ensemble of instrument and shoulder rest. For this purpose, a hole track formed by a number of main holes based on the width of the support element are arranged centrally in this and at least one hole track formed by a number of secondary holes based on the width of the support element eccentrically in this, the secondary holes each seen in the longitudinal direction of the support element are arranged approximately in the middle between two adjacent main holes. The support element is thus with a plurality provided by holes that form a specifically combined ensemble of main and secondary holes, and which are dimensioned and positioned in their entirety for a particularly favorable transmission of the sound within the base body. This particularly preferred positioning of the holes allows a number of actually divergent design goals to be taken into account: on the one hand, a particularly favorable guidance of the sound in the support element is enabled, while on the other hand the structural integrity of the support element itself is particularly stable with regard to the weaknesses caused by the holes can be held.
For a particularly harmonious vibration behavior, one or both of these categories, i. H. Main holes on the one hand and / or secondary holes on the other hand, the holes advantageously chosen to be of the same size with regard to their diameter or their area. As has also surprisingly turned out, a particularly favorable vibration behavior can be achieved in that the individual hole area of the main holes is approximately four times the individual hole area of the secondary holes, i.e. H. that the hole size, for example defined by the clear width of a hole, of the main holes is approximately twice the hole size of the secondary holes.
Particularly preferred is a configuration in which, viewed in the longitudinal direction of the support element, two eccentrically arranged, preferably mirror-symmetrically positioned, secondary holes are provided between two successive main holes, viewed in the longitudinal direction of the support element. With such an arrangement, the aforementioned choice of geometry, in which the hole size of the main holes is approximately twice the hole size of the secondary holes, means that, across the width of the support element, the cross-sectional portion filled by the material of the base body in the area of the main holes is approximately just as large is the same as in the area of the secondary holes, so that particularly high-quality sound conduction properties are obtained when viewed in the longitudinal direction of the support element. In particular, it can thereby be achieved that the sound spectrum and the tone of the instrument have a high quality and open effect, with the support element remaining particularly bendable.
As has also surprisingly been found, a particularly high sound quality of the ensemble of instrument and shoulder rest can be achieved by the holes advantageously having a total area of at least 8%, preferably at least 10%, and at most 30%, preferably at most 20%, occupy the surface of the support element. Particularly preferably, the holes take up a total area of approximately 12.5% of the area of the support element. In an alternative or additional advantageous development, the holes are designed with sharp edges. Compared to holes with rounded edges, this enables a particularly pleasing sound to be achieved.
A particularly harmonious and high-quality sound image can also be achieved in that the or at least some of the holes are contoured in a particularly suitable manner. In particular, provision is made for the holes to have a non-circular, round contour. Rather, some or all of the holes should advantageously have a shape that is elongated as seen in the longitudinal direction of the support element, so that, as seen in the longitudinal direction of the support element, they each have a greater clear width than in its transverse direction. The execution of the holes extending in the longitudinal direction can in particular, especially in the confluence area of the opening slots, be accompanied by a comparatively pointed contour in the area of impact of the sound waves.
In a particularly advantageous development, the contour of the main holes comprises a number of almost straight, comparatively slightly curved contour segments. As a result, the holes can, for example, essentially have a diamond, rhombus or "eye" -shaped basic shape, which - viewed in the longitudinal direction of the support element - tapers comparatively pointedly on its front and rear side (apart from roundings) and continuously on its side edges has a certain, albeit comparatively small, curvature.
It is also surprisingly beneficial for the sound image if an overall odd number of main holes, preferably five, is advantageously provided.
As has also been found, surprisingly, for a particularly advantageous combination of sound properties on the one hand and comfort and user-friendly (contour) properties on the other hand, the choice of suitable geometry parameters for the support element of the shoulder rest is important. In a particularly advantageous embodiment, the cross-sectional area of the base body of the support element, based on its longitudinal direction, should be at least 60 mm 2 (especially when used as a support for a support element and / or when using hardened wood), preferably at least 75 mm 2 , and at most 210 mm mm 2 (in particular with a thickness of 7 mm and a width of 3 cm), particularly preferably at most 150 mm 2 . In particular, the cross-sectional area should be approximately uniform and change as little as possible over the longitudinal direction of the shoulder rest, since changes in the cross-sectional area seem to cause disturbances in the sound behavior.
Wood, plastic or plastic is provided as a particularly preferred choice of material for the support element. In an advantageous embodiment, the support element therefore also has a thickness of at least 2 mm and at most 7 mm, preferably of at least 3 mm and at most 6 mm, particularly preferably of at least 3.3 mm and at most 5 mm, and in the case of a wood version Execution in plastic or plastic a thickness of at least 1.5 mm and at most 4.5 mm.
In order to ensure particularly high wearing comfort and thus particularly favorable playability under these boundary conditions, the width of the support element is also advantageously selected to be suitable. Advantageously, a width of the support element of at least 20 mm and at most 48 mm, particularly preferably of at least 22 mm and at most 30 mm, preferably of at least 24 mm and at most 28 mm, is provided.
The advantages achieved with the invention are in particular that the segmented design of the support element, preferably with the opening slits, allows the support body to be broken up or separated into a plurality of relatively smaller elements on the sound side, which create a certain lightness in sound quality for the player and convey. Especially in the preferably provided combination with the hole pattern formed by additionally provided through holes, a particularly high-quality sound behavior can thus be achieved overall.

At the

The
The opening slits 38 are suitably selected with a view to improving the tonal properties of the

The
There are a total of five
The
In addition, the

The
