Definitions
- the invention relates to a cigarette article in the form of a cigarette paper, a cigarette tube, a cigarette filter and an adhesive for cigarette articles, comprising cannabidiol (CBD), and to a method of making these articles.
- CBD cannabidiol
- Cannabidiol 2-[(1 R ,6 R )-3-methyl-6-(prop-1-en-2-yl)cyclohex-2-enyl]-5-pentylbenzene-1,3-diol (of formula 1 shown below), is the second most important cannabinoid found in cannabis plants, after ⁇ 9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).
- the adhesive is an essential raw material used in the tobacco industry to make cigarettes and components for their manufacture. Its task is to create a high-strength bond supporting the tobacco tube ( PL104 204 , US4187119 ).
- the adhesive used in the tobacco industry should be fast-drying (which is very important in automated manufacturing), contain no components highly toxic to the human body, and create no toxic components during its combustion ( US5121758 , US4175996 , US5085228 , US4187119 , EP0793696A1 ).
- Adhesives used in the tobacco industry can also be categorized according to their base, i.e., the adhesives based on:
- the adhesives used the most often are natural adhesives and, above all, polysaccharide adhesives.
- the primarily used adhesive is the polysaccharide adhesive based on acacia gum ( US5155140 , US5121758 , US4175996 ).
- the synthetic adhesives based on polyvinyl alcohols are employed. They have a very short drying time, are easy to apply, form a narrow and durable bond on the glued surface, and their composition is repeatable and suitable for modification ( PL104204 ).
- a cigarette filter is another component used in the tobacco industry. Almost all cigarettes are currently equipped with a cigarette filter. It is not only a mechanical barrier preventing chopped tobacco from entering the mouth, but it also filters cigarette smoke, which reduces the entry of some toxic substances into the smoker's lungs ( US5598868 , PL315057 , PL20030411 , US5829453A , US20060021626 ). A whole range of filters exists. They can be made of activated carbon, ground shells, polypropylene, plant fibers obtained from straw, fruit, bran, husks and others ( AU2001264076 , EP1014811 , US8157918B ). For many years, cigarette filters have been principally made of polyvinyl derivatives, and most often of cellulose acetate (acetate) ( US3366521 ).
- acetate cigarette filter An important feature of the acetate cigarette filter is the compactness of its structure, while its flow capacity and appropriate sorption properties are maintained [ US5598868 , PL315057 , PL20030411 , US5829453A , AU2001264076 ]. In the case of the acetate filters, this is achieved by adding glycerin or triacetin to the acetate nonwoven in the filter formation process ( AU2001264076 , EP1014811 ).
- flavored cigarettes constitute a fairly significant fraction.
- the aromatic smell of tobacco smoke is obtained either by flavoring the chopped tobacco of the cigarette or by flavoring the cigarette filter ( US8157918 , JP5606544 , FR2459011 , US4466451 , ES2333347 ).
- the latter method has been used for a long time, by adding appropriate flavoring agents, both synthetic (e.g., menthol, limonene, geraniol, etc.) and natural (e.g., essential oils), to the filter at the stage of its formation.
- the aim of the invention was to focus research on developing a method for incorporating the highly hydrophobic CBD into polysaccharide adhesives based on acacia gum, which are available commercially and used in the tobacco industry.
- the objective of the invention was also to focus research on developing a method for incorporating the highly hydrophobic CBD into polyvinyl adhesives, which are available commercially and used in the tobacco industry.
- a further objective of the invention was also to focus research on developing a method of introducing CBD into a cigarette filter at the stage of its manufacturing, which would allow to maintain its compactness, flow capacity, and sorption properties unchanged.
- CBD is added to the base (i.e., to the commercially available polysaccharide adhesive of acacia gum employed in the manufacturing of cigarette papers for tobacco tubes) in the form of an alcoholic pre-concentrate.
- the present invention relates to a cigarette article in the form of an adhesive, a cigarette paper, a cigarette tube, or a cigarette filter characterized in that it comprises cannabidiol.
- the cigarette article in the form of an adhesive is characterized by cannabidiol being present in the cigarette article in the form of a polysaccharide adhesive based on acacia gum in an amount of up to 10% by weight based on the weight of the adhesive.
- the adhesive preferably further contains up to 10% by weight of ethyl alcohol.
- a further cigarette article according to the invention being an adhesive is characterized by cannabidiol being present in the cigarette article in the form of a polyvinyl adhesive, preferably an adhesive based on polyvinyl acetate, in an amount of up to 15% by weight based on the weight of the adhesive.
- the adhesive further contains up to 10% by weight of triacetin.
- a further cigarette article according to the invention being a cigarette paper is characterized in that it comprises a previously applied layer of the adhesive according to the invention.
- Yet another cigarette article of the invention being a cigarette tube is characterized in that it comprises a previously applied layer the adhesive as defined above.
- a cigarette article of the invention being a cigarette filter is characterized by cannabidiol being present in the cigarette filter based on cellulose acetate in an amount of up to 3.5% by weight.
- the invention also relates to a method of making a cigarette article in the form of an adhesive, the method comprising obtaining a polysaccharide adhesive based on acacia gum containing up to 10% cannabidiol by:
- the concentration of cannabidiol in the ethyl alcohol pre-concentrate is preferably up to 50% by weight.
- the invention also relates to a method of making a cigarette article in the form of a polyvinyl adhesive, preferably a polyvinyl acetate-based adhesive, the method comprising obtaining an adhesive containing up to 15% cannabidiol by:
- the concentration of cannabidiol in the triacetin pre-concentrate is preferably up to 65% by weight.
- the invention also relates to a method of making a cigarette article in the form of a filter, the method comprising obtaining a cigarette filter of cellulose acetate containing up to 3.5% cannabidiol by:
- the concentration of cannabidiol in the pre-concentrate is preferably up to 26% by weight.
- the invention relates to a method of making a cigarette article characterized in that the adhesive according to the invention is applied to a cigarette paper.
- the polysaccharide adhesive according to the invention is characterized in that it contains an admixture of CBD of formula 1 suitably in a maximum amount relative to the base of from 0.01 to 10% by weight of CBD.
- An advantage of the composition according to the invention is the presence of the hydrophobic CBD in a hydrophilic polysaccharide adhesive compound in a dispersed form, which does not change the adhesive properties of the article.
- the adhesive according to the invention i.e., based on acacia gum, containing cannabidiol (CBD), is used, among others, to glue the cigarette paper used in cigarette roll manufacturing.
- the composition according to the invention is an environmentally friendly article and an article approved for contact with food.
- the polyvinyl adhesive according to the invention is characterized in that it contains an admixture of CBD of formula 1 suitably in a maximum amount relative to the base of from 0.01 to 15% by weight of CBD.
- An advantage of the composition according to the invention is the presence of the hydrophobic CBD in a hydrophilic polyvinyl adhesive compound in a dispersed form, which has suitable adhesive properties for the manufacturing of tobacco tubes.
- the polyvinyl adhesive of the invention i.e., containing cannabidiol (CBD), is used, among others, to glue the cigarette paper used in cigarette roll manufacturing.
- CBD cannabidiol
- the acetate filter with CBD is characterized in that it contains an admixture of CBD of formula 1 in a maximum amount based on filter weight of from 0.01 to 3.50% by weight of CBD.
- the advantage of the filter according to the invention is the presence of CBD in the structure of the acetate filter in a uniformly dispersed form, which does not affect the properties of the filter compared with its properties without the addition of CBD.
- the filter according to the invention fully keeps the properties of compactness of the structure, flow capacity and unchanged sorption properties compared with the CBD-free filter.
- An adhesive containing 2% CBD by weight was prepared by dissolving 20 g of crystalline CBD in 80 g of 95% ethyl alcohol. The 20% solution was introduced in small portions into 900 g of an adhesive base based on acacia gum with vigorous stirring using a mechanical stirrer to obtain a clear homogeneous solution.
- An adhesive containing 10% CBD by weight was prepared by dissolving 100 g of crystalline CBD in 100 g of 95% ethyl alcohol. The 50% solution was introduced in small portions into 800 g of an adhesive base based on acacia gum with vigorous stirring using a mechanical stirrer to obtain a clear homogeneous solution. Exceeding the amount of 10% by weight of CBD causes a loss of homogeneity of the adhesive, resulting in adverse effects during its use.
- An adhesive containing 1% CBD by weight was prepared by dissolving 10 g of crystalline CBD in 40 g of triacetin of formula 2. The 20% solution was introduced in small portions into 950 g of an adhesive base with vigorous stirring using a mechanical stirrer to obtain a clear homogeneous solution.
- the adhesive base was a dispersion adhesive based on polyvinyl acetate with a polyvinyl acetate content in the range of 80 - 90%, and a solids' content of 47%, and a viscosity of 1000 cP.
- An adhesive containing 15% CBD by weight was prepared by dissolving 150 g of crystalline CBD in 100 g of triacetin.
- the 60% solution was introduced in small portions into 750 g of an adhesive base with vigorous stirring using a mechanical stirrer to obtain a clear homogeneous solution.
- the adhesive base was a dispersion adhesive based on polyvinyl acetate with a polyvinyl acetate content in the range of 80 - 90%, and a solids' content of 47%, and a viscosity of 1000 cP.
- a pre-concentrate containing 0.1% CBD by weight was prepared by dissolving 10 g of crystalline CBD in 990 g (854 mL) of triacetin of formula 2. To accelerate the dissolution process of the crystalline CBD, the solution was heated to 45 °C with additional vigorous stirring using a mechanical stirrer to obtain a homogeneous solution. The obtained pre-concentrate was then applied to 11,000 acetate filters 90 mm long and 8 mm in diameter to obtain a CBD concentration of 0.01% in the filter.
- a pre-concentrate containing 26% CBD by weight was prepared by dissolving 260 g of crystalline CBD in 740 g (638 mL) of triacetin of formula 2. To accelerate the dissolution process of the crystalline CBD, the solution was heated to 45 °C with additional vigorous stirring using a mechanical stirrer to obtain a homogeneous solution. The obtained pre-concentrate was then applied to 11,000 acetate filters 90 mm long and 8 mm in diameter to obtain a CBD concentration of 3.50% in the filter.
