Definitions
- the present invention relates to a smart card with dual contact and contactless communication interface, provided with a card body essentially made of metal.
- Some of the known chip cards have a metallic layer on only one side of the card, the other side not being covered with metal but provided with an antenna allowing communication with a remote reader by radio frequency. Nevertheless, due to the shielding effect of the metallic layer, the radiofrequency communication is degraded, in particular when the metallic face of the card is presented towards the reader. In particular, tests have shown that with this type of smart card, it was impossible to comply with certain standards such as those imposed by the so-called EMVCo specifications which impose mechanical, electrical and radio frequency communication quality requirements.
- the document EP 2 073 154 A1 describes a smart card whose card body is not made of metal, and whose electronic module inside the card body is provided with a battery in order to be able to supply a biometric sensor, such as a sensor of fingerprint, built-in smart card.
- a biometric sensor such as a sensor of fingerprint, built-in smart card.
- the desired objective is to be able to carry out biometric identity tests directly on the smart card, without depending on radio frequency communication with a remote reader, in order to save time on transactions.
- the presence of this battery has nothing to do with and no effect on the mode of communication with the remote contactless reader.
- the document US 2017/017871 A1 describes a smart card with a dual contact and contactless communication interface, comprising a card body comprising two or three metal sheets and an electronic module provided with a contact terminal block and an antenna intended for radiofrequency communication with the antenna of a remote reader.
- this chip card does not include an active communication circuit powered by a battery and capable of compensating for the electromagnetic shielding effect of the metal sheets so as to establish active radiofrequency communication between the chip card and the remote reader.
- the object of the invention is to propose a new smart card structure with a metal body and with a double contact and contactless communication interface which has a contactless communication interface modified so that it is capable of communicating in wireless mode. contact according to the requirements of the EMVCo type specifications, regardless of the side of the card presented to the field of the reader, while maintaining a simple structure that is easy to manufacture.
- Another object of the invention is to propose a chip card having an essentially metallic card body capable of offering a significant differentiation in terms of perception, compared to known plastic cards.
- This differentiation notably involves the need to obtain a card relatively heavy, having metal on the surface and on the edge, and making a "metallic" noise when thrown on the surface of a table or other.
- the invention consists in providing the smart card with an essentially metallic body, with the exception of a slot reserved for the microelectronic module, and in providing the module with an antenna and a communication circuit active powered by a battery placed in a cavity in the card body.
- the card body is made of two metal plates with ISO 7816-1 dimensions, provided with through cutouts intended to receive the microelectronic module, and blind cutouts forming a cavity intended to receive a battery.
- the subject of the invention is therefore a smart card with a dual contact and contactless communication interface, comprising a card body comprising two metal sheets and an electronic module provided with a contact terminal block and an antenna intended for a radiofrequency communication with the antenna of a remote reader, characterized in that the electronic module includes an active communication circuit powered by a battery located in the smart card and configured to generate a carrier signal capable of interacting with the signal carrier transmitted by a remote contactless reader so as to establish an active radio frequency communication between the smart card and said remote reader.
- the shielding effect of the metal layers is compensated and the communication between the reader and the smart card is no longer dependent on the low amplitude of the carrier of the reader which would otherwise be reduced by the smart card due to the presence of metal sheets.
- the active communication circuit when it is placed in the vicinity of the reader, emits a carrier of the same frequency as that of the reader, out of phase or not with respect to the carrier of the reader and causing a modification of the voltage across the antenna of the reader so as to communicate information between the reader and the smart card.
- the active communication circuit has several ways of communicating with the reader.
- One way is to emit the electromagnetic field at the same carrier frequency as the reader and in phase with the carrier of the reader to encode a high modulation state (corresponding to a binary "1"), and to emit the electromagnetic field at the same carrier frequency as the reader and in phase opposition with the carrier of the reader to encode a low modulation state (corresponding to a binary "0").
- the card body comprises two metal sheets between which is arranged said battery supplying said active communication circuit.
- At least one of the metal sheets is provided with a cavity capable of receiving said battery.
- the metal sheets are each provided with a blind cavity, the two blind cavities being located opposite each other and capable of receiving said battery.
- the two metal sheets comprise two through-cavities located opposite one another and capable of receiving the microelectronic module.
- the surface of the two metal sheets is greater than or equal to 90% of the total external surface of the smart card.
- the battery terminals are connected to supply pads located on the electronic module, via conductive tracks provided on the internal face of one of the two metal sheets.
- the metal sheets have a thickness of approximately 400 micrometers.
- the two metal sheets are made of stainless steel or a metal alloy.
- the smart card comprises a layer of electrically insulating resin or a layer of insulating varnish placed between the two metal sheets.
- the circuit is provided with diodes making it possible to recharge the battery via the contacts of the module when the chip card is inserted into a contact chip card reader.
- FIG 1 there is shown in exploded perspective a smart card 1 according to the invention. It has two 2.3 metal sheets, in particular in the format corresponding to the ISO 7816-1 standard.
- the top sheet will be designated as the sheet 2 which comprises a through-cavity 5 receiving the electronic module 4, the cavity 5 having the size of the terminal block of the module.
- the two metal sheets 2.3 each have a thickness of approximately 400 micrometers.
- the electronic module 4 comprises on its visible surface a standardized contact terminal block, intended for connection with corresponding contacts of a smart card reader, as is well known in the field of smart cards.
- the bottom sheet 3 is provided with a smaller through cavity 7 which receives the lower part of the module 4 which is provided with an antenna 12 intended to communicate with the antenna of a remote reader.
- the figures 3 and 4 respectively show the external and internal face of the upper metal sheet 2. As can be seen, most of the surface of the sheet 2, ie around 90%, is made of solid metal.
- the outer face of the sheet 2 simply comprises a through opening 5 intended to receive the upper face of the electronic module 4 (not represented in the picture 3 ).
- the inner face of the metal sheet 2 ( figure 4 ) comprises a blind cavity 9' homologous to cavity 9 of lower sheet 3, intended to receive part of the thickness of battery 8 (not shown in figure 4 ).
- Cavity 9' is extended by a portion of blind cavity 9" intended to allow conductive tracks 6 to pass allowing the terminals of battery 8 to be connected to the supply pads of electronic module 4.
- Cavity 9" opens into cavity 5 intended to receive module 4.
- the figures 5 and 6 respectively show the external and internal face of the lower metal sheet 3. Again, most of the surface of the sheet 3, ie about 90%, is made of solid metal.
- the external face of the sheet 3 simply comprises a through opening 7 intended to receive the lower face of the electronic module 4 (not represented in the figure 5 ).
- the part of cavity 7 not filled by the lower part of module 4 can be filled with an electrically insulating material, for example a resin.
- the inner face of the metal sheet 3 includes a blind cavity 9, intended to receive part of the thickness of the battery 8 (not shown in figure 6 ).
- the cavities 9 and 7 do not need to be connected, insofar as the connection tracks 6 of the battery 8 to the module 4 are arranged, in the example shown, on the internal face of the upper metal sheet 2 .
- figure 7 we have represented the smart card of the picture 2 in longitudinal section along section plane AA' passing through module 4.
- the thickness of the card is exaggerated for better visibility.
- the battery 8 is connected by the metal tracks 6 to the supply terminals of the module 4.
- the figure 8 shows a similar cut of the smart card, but according to the cut plane BB' of the picture 2 , not going through module 4.
- a very thin layer of resin or insulating glue (not shown) is interposed between the internal faces of the metal sheets 2.3, in order to avoid short-circuiting the + and - terminals of the battery.
- the figure 9 represents an enlarged elevational view in section of the electronic module 4, showing in particular the standardized contacts 11 of the terminal block located on the upper face of the module, the turns of the antenna 12 located on the lower face of the module, a drop 13 of resin of coating protecting the electronic components of the module, as known per se. There is also shown a contact terminal 14 intended to be connected to one of the tracks 6 for connection to the battery 8.
- the figure 10 recalls the electronic diagram of the components of a passive smart card conforming to the state of the art.
- the module comprises a contact terminal block 11 connected to a component 15 of a microprocessor chip card.
- the passive component 15 is connected to an antenna 12 which makes it possible to pick up, typically via a so-called "booster" amplification antenna (not shown), the electromagnetic flux coming from the remote reader, which makes it possible to supply the component 15 with energy necessary to operate and to ensure communication with the reader.
- the booster antenna must be large, typically the size of the card body, and under these conditions it is not possible for the card body to have metal sheets covering the antenna or antennas, because these leaves would form a shield that would make effective radiofrequency communication between the contactless card and the reader impossible.
- a microprocessor chip card component 15 known per se, is connected to a radiofrequency communication stage composed of an active component 16 whose purpose is to transform the signal from a smart card 15 into an active radiofrequency signal allowing uplink and downlink communication with a remote radiofrequency reader.
- the smart card according to the invention comprises a battery 8 intended to power the radio frequency communication circuit 16 of the module 4.
- the battery 8 is used to supply electrical energy to a communication circuit 16, able to supply a traditional chip 15 and to transform the passive signal of this traditional chip 15 via its contactless interface, in order to carry out active communication with a reader. without remote contact.
- a communication circuit 16 able to supply a traditional chip 15 and to transform the passive signal of this traditional chip 15 via its contactless interface, in order to carry out active communication with a reader. without remote contact.
- the metal chip card emits a carrier of the same frequency as that of the reader.
- the carrier emitted by the communication circuit 16 via the communication antenna 12 of the smart card is in phase or in phase opposition with the carrier signal emitted by the reader, in order to code a high modulation state or a state low modulation.
- the carrier emitted in active mode by the new smart card in the vicinity of the reader (in practice the distance between reader and smart card is less than 10 centimeters) will modify the voltage at the terminals of the reader's antenna, and this modification allows data to be communicated between the reader and the metal smart card.
- the mode of communication between the smart card and the reader is said to be active, as opposed to the conventional mode of communication which is passive in the sense that only the reader emits a carrier signal which is picked up by the smart card without contact.
- the conventional arrangement works when the smart card has a plastic card body, but is no longer suitable for a smart card whose card body is essentially metallic and generates an electromagnetic shielding effect.
- Battery 8 is connected to radiofrequency communication circuit 16 of module 4 by conductive tracks 6.
- Battery 8 is thin, but its integration nevertheless requires the arrangement of cavities in the metal sheets, for the insertion of the battery 8. It may be a single cavity arranged in one of the two metal sheets, or two cavities 9, 9' preferably blind, distributed in the inner face of each of the metal sheets 2.3.
- Component 16 is powered by battery 8, unlike the passive circuits of known contactless smart cards, which are powered remotely by the energy of the reader.
- the active component 16 is connected at the output to the antenna 12 of the module provided with an adaptation circuit composed of capacitors.
- the antenna 12 is a small antenna which is sufficient to obtain good quality radio frequency communication, given the direct battery power supply.
- the other electronic components 18 connected to component 16 are mainly so-called decoupling capacitors, necessary for stabilizing the power supply of the component.
- the electronic module is also provided with diodes 17 making it possible to recharge the battery 8 via the contacts 11 when the chip card is inserted into a contact chip card reader.
- the figure 12 represents a practical embodiment of the lower face of the module 4, provided with the antenna 12, and the supply terminals 14 intended to be connected to the tracks 6 going to the battery.
- the figure 13 represents a practical embodiment of the upper face of the module 4, with in particular the contacts 11 of the terminal block according to the ISO 7816 standard.
- the figure 14 shows module 4 seen from below (antenna side), with a transparent display (lighter line) of the contacts on the upper face of the module.
- Tests show that radio frequency communication with a reader is of good quality whatever the orientation of the card, and complies with EMVCo specifications.
- the metal faces are solid, without compromising the quality of radio frequency communication. They offer a beautiful appearance, and a good grip.
- the smart card according to the invention operates in the same way as a plastic card but, thanks to the active communication mode, fully complies with the contactless EMVCo standard.

Description
- Découper deux feuilles métalliques au format carte à puce ISO 7816-1 ;
- Usiner des lumières traversantes à l'endroit d'implantation prévu pour le module électronique ;
- Usiner des cavités borgnes à l'endroit de chaque feuille métallique prévu pour recevoir une batterie électrique ;
- Interposer un isolant électrique entre les deux feuilles métalliques, par exemple par dépôt sur l'une des faces internes des feuilles métalliques ;
- Reporter la batterie dans la cavité borgne de l'une des feuilles métalliques ;
- Rapporter des pistes conductrices et les connecter entre les bornes de la batterie et les plots d'alimentation du module à l'aide par exemple d'un film conducteur anisotropique ;
- Rapporter et coller la feuille métallique supérieure sur la feuille métallique inférieure ;

figure 1 , on a représenté en perspective éclatée une carte à puce 1 selon l'invention.
figure 11 .
figure 15 illustre de façon schématique les étapes du procédé d'assemblage des éléments de la carte à puce. On procède de la manière suivante : - Découper deux feuilles métalliques au format carte à puce ISO 7816-1 ;
- Usiner des lumières traversantes (5,7) à l'endroit d'implantation prévu pour le module électronique 4 ;
- Usiner des cavités borgnes (9, 9') à l'endroit de chaque feuille métallique (2,3) prévu pour recevoir une batterie électrique 8 ;
- Interposer un isolant électrique entre les deux feuilles métalliques, par exemple par dépôt sur l'une des faces internes des feuilles métalliques ;
- Reporter la batterie (8) dans la cavité borgne (9) de l'une des feuilles métalliques (2,3) ;
- Rapporter des pistes conductrices (6) et les connecter entre les bornes de la batterie (8) et les plots d'alimentation du module (4) à l'aide d'un film conducteur anisotropique;
- Rapporter et coller la feuille métallique supérieure (2) sur la feuille métallique inférieure (3) ;
