Description

A HEAT PUMP DISHWASHER COMPRISING A DEFROST RECEPTACLE
  • The present invention relates to a heat pump dishwasher.
  • The heat pump system in the heat pump dishwashers is composed of a compressor which pressurizes the refrigerant and provides the circulation thereof, flow tubes wherein the refrigerant circulates, a condenser, an evaporator, and an expansion element. In the heat pump dishwashers, the water heating process is realized by means of the heat pump system. The evaporator in the heat pump system draws heat from the environment while the condenser transfers heat to the washing water. The evaporator tubes are colder than the ambient air. Thus, the evaporator draws heat from the air passed thereover. During this process, the water vapor in the ambient air condenses on the evaporator surfaces, forming water droplets. Said water droplets generated during the normal operation are collected in the condensation receptacle. When the air of the environment wherein the dishwasher is installed gets colder in winter months, the evaporator surfaces get colder than normal. In case air flow is restricted due to the position of the dishwasher, the evaporator cools down excessively and a frost layer is formed on the evaporator surfaces instead of water droplets. The frost layer fills in the spaces between the evaporator fins and prevents the air flow. In this case, as the amount of air which can be passed over the evaporator decreases, the heat absorption capacity of the heat pump also decreases. This causes the heat pump to be operated inefficiently, increasing the time and energy required for heating the water.
  • The Patent No. EP2594185 (B1) relates to a heat pump dishwasher. The evaporator operates in the waste water tank, and thus the heat pump draws heat from the water in the waste water tank.
  • The Patent No. EP2658430 (B1) relates to a heat pump dishwasher. The evaporator and the condenser are disposed in separate water tanks.
  • The aim of the present invention is the realization of a heat pump dishwasher wherein the problem of frost in the evaporator is eliminated, thus decreasing energy consumption.
  • The dishwasher realized in order to attain the aim of the present invention is of heat pump type, and comprises a compressor, a condenser, and an evaporator which is composed of refrigerant tubes and fins. In the embodiment of the present invention, a defrost receptacle is placed onto the evaporator and water is filled into the defrost receptacle. With the heat transfer from the defrost receptacle to the evaporator, the problem of frost on the evaporator is eliminated. In various embodiment of the present invention, alternatives for supplying water to the defrost receptacle and heating the water in the defrost receptacle are proposed.
  • The heat pump dishwasher realized in order to attain the aim of the present invention is illustrated in the attached figures, where:

  • The dishwasher (1) comprises a tub (2) wherein the washing process is performed; a circulation pump (3) which provides the delivery of the washing water into the washing environment in the tub (2); at least one rack (4) wherein the items to be washed are placed; at least one spray arm (5) which provides the delivery of the washing water to the racks (4); and a heat pump (6) which heats the washing water.
  • The heat pump system (6) comprises a compressor (7) which performs the refrigerant cycle; an electronic card (8) which controls the compressor (7); a condenser (9) which is used for heating the washing water; an evaporator (12) which draws heat from the outer environment and transfers the same to the condenser (9) and which is composed of fins (10) and refrigerant tubes (11); at least one fan (13) which provides the heat transfer by blowing the ambient air onto the evaporator (12); an expansion element (14), for example a capillary tube or an expansion valve, which is disposed between the condenser (9) and the evaporator (12); and a condensation receptacle wherein the water condensing on the evaporator (12) is collected.
  • The dishwasher (1) of the present invention comprises
  • - at least one temperature sensor (15) which contacts the evaporator (12),
  • - a defrost receptacle (16) which is placed over the evaporator (12), and
  • - a control unit (not shown in figures) which, if it is detected that frost appears on the evaporator (12) according to the data received from the temperature sensor (15), provides that the defrost receptacle (16) is filled with water and that the frost on the evaporator (12) is removed by means of the heat transfer between the defrost receptacle (16) and the evaporator (12).
  • In an embodiment of the present invention, the defrost receptacle (16) is placed on the horizontal surface formed by the upper edges of the fins (10) in the evaporator (12) (Figure 3).
  • In another embodiment of the present invention, the control unit, if it is detected that frost appears on the evaporator (12) by the temperature sensor (15), provides the delivery of the water taken from the water mains tap (17) to the defrost receptacle (16) (Figure 1).
  • In another embodiment of the present invention, the dishwasher (1) comprises a water tank (18) which enables the water to be collected before the washing process and brought to the ambient temperature and thus shortening the water heating time during the washing process and providing savings in energy, and the control unit, if it is detected that frost appears on the evaporator (12) by the temperature sensor (15), provides the delivery of the water in the water tank (18) to the defrost receptacle (16) (Figure 2).
  • In the dishwasher (1), the defrost receptacle (16) is placed onto the fins of the evaporator (12) in order to prevent frost formation on the evaporator (12). When the frost layer forms on the evaporator (12), water is filled into the defrost receptacle (16) from the water mains tap (17) or the water tank (18) by means of state of the art water transfer methods. The frost layer forms at 0°C and at temperatures below 0°C. As the temperature of the water supplied from the water mains tap (17) or the water tank (18) is higher than 0°C, heat transfer occurs between the defrost receptacle (16) and the evaporator (12), thus the frost on the evaporator (12) is melted and the water is transferred to the condensation receptacle (not shown in figures) under the evaporator (12).
  • In another embodiment of the present invention, the defrost receptacle (16) comprises a plurality of extensions (19) which extend in between the fins (10) in a direction perpendicular to the lower surface thereof seated on the evaporator (12) and which enable the amount of heat transfer from the defrost receptacle (16) to the evaporator (12) to be increased by contacting the fins (10). The extensions (19) increase the contact surface area between the defrost receptacle (16) base and the evaporator (12) fins (10), hence increasing the amount of heat transfer (Figure 3).
  • In another embodiment of the present invention, at least one arm of the refrigerant tube (11) in the evaporator (12) is positioned in the defrost receptacle (16) (Figure 6). The refrigerant tube (11) arm positioned in the defrost receptacle (16) increases the amount of heat transfer from the water, thus decreasing the defrost time in the evaporator (12). In another embodiment of the present invention, a resistance heater is placed into the defrost receptacle (16).
  • In another embodiment of the present invention, the dishwasher (1) comprises a water heating line (20) which provides heat transfer from the tub (2) to the defrost receptacle (16), with one end extending into the washing environment in the tub (2) and the other end contacting (immersed in) the water in the defrost receptacle (16) (Figure 4).
  • In another embodiment of the present invention, the dishwasher (1) comprises a container (21) which is disposed on the compressor (7) and/or the electronic card (8) and a water heating line (20) which provides heat transfer from the container (21) to the defrost receptacle (16), with one end contacting (immersed in) the water heated in the container (21) and the other end contacting (immersed in) the water in the defrost receptacle (16) (Figure 5).
  • In case the temperature of the evaporator (12) decreases excessively and a dense frost layer forms, the amount of heat transfer from the defrost receptacle (16) to the evaporator (12) must be increased. In the embodiments disclosed in the two paragraphs above, the temperature of the water in the defrost receptacle (16) is increased with the heat transferred by means of the water heating line (20) from the tub (2) or the container (21) placed on the compressor (7) and/or the electronic card (8).
  • In an embodiment of the present invention, the water heating line (20) is produced from a tube wherein water or a fluid with high heat transfer coefficient is circulated by means of a pump.
  • In another embodiment of the present invention, the water heating line (20) is produced from a metal tube or a metal wire with high heat transfer coefficient.
  • By means of the present invention, in the dishwasher (1), the frost layer forming on the evaporator (12) surfaces can be detected, and the detected frost layer is melted, thus providing the efficient operation of the heat pump system (6) and decreasing energy consumption.
