Thecontrol unit 6 receives current from thebattery 4 and controls the transmission of the current through theelectrical conduit 5 to theactuator 3, depending on the programming that is present in thememory 6a and is being executed by theprocessor 6b. Thecontrol unit 6 and thebattery 4 are also shown inFigures 1 and6A . - The
main body 10 includes astorage member 14 and acover 16. Thestorage member 14 may have a plurality ofwalls 13, including front andrear walls 13a and side walls 13b. The front andrear walls 13a may be formed from a single contiguous piece of material or may alternatively be formed from separate materials. Thecover 16 may also be formed from the same single piece of material as the front andrear walls 13a, or from a separate piece of material. Thestorage member 14 and thecover 16 together may define the storage chamber S, which is used to store personal items that belong to the user. Thewalls 13 may each be formed from a plurality oflayers 17 of material as shown inFigures 6A ,7 and9 . Accordingly, it may be said that themain body 10 includes a plurality oflayers 17 of material. - In some embodiments, the
layers 17 of material may be layers of genuine or artificial leather. In other embodiments, thelayers 17 may be any other suitable material. Thelayers 17 need not all be made of the same material. - The
layers 17 may be held together by glue, and/or by being sewn together along their respective edges, and/or by joining members shown at 18. The joiningmembers 18 may also be strips of material that are glued along the edges of thelayers 18. - The
layers 17 may include an outer layer 17a that may be made from genuine or artificial leather, and an inner layer 17b that is a lining material that may be, for example, a cloth material, a satin or a silk material. In the embodiment shown inFigure 9 , thelayers 17 further include an intermediate layer 17c, which may be, for example a structural layer made from a material such as plastic or cardboard. - In some regions of the
main body 10, a space R (Figure 7 ) may be provided between thelayers 17 of thewalls 13. In the embodiment shown inFigure 9 , two spaces R are provided, a first space R (shown individually at R1) between the outer layer 17a and the intermediate layer 17c, and a second space R (shown individually at R2) between the inner layer 17b and the intermediate layer 17c. - As can be seen in
Figures 7 and9 , at least a portion of theelectrical conduit 5 extends in the space R between thelayers 17. Accordingly, the space R may be referred to as a conduit space. - By providing the conduit space R between the
layers 17 of material that make up thewalls 13 of the carryingvessel 1, theelectrical conduit 5 is protected from damage or accidental disconnection from the components that it is intended to connect electrically. - The
battery 4 may be stored in abattery pocket 28 that is formed inside the storage chamber S. Thebattery pocket 28 may be open at the top so as to permit easy access to thebattery 4 for recharging or for replacement. Thebattery pocket 28 may alternatively be covered at the top by a cover that is openable to permit access to thebattery 4. Alternatively, thebattery pocket 28 may be covered without permitting access to thebattery 4. In such an instance thebattery 4 could be rechargeable and could be charged via a connection terminal that extends through the wall of thebattery pocket 28. The wall of thebattery pocket 28 may be formed, as shown, by the inner layer 17b of material. - The
battery 4 may be stored in abattery housing 32. Thebattery housing 32 may be sized to hold one or a plurality of thebattery 4, and holds thebattery 4 in a selected position to hold it in electrical connection with whatever electrical conduit extends to thecontrol unit 6. - The carrying
vessel 1 may include anoptional storage pocket 27 that can be used to store a subset of items in the storage chamber S. Thestorage pocket 27 may have an upper opening that has an openable cover or which may alternatively include no cover. - The carrying

speaker 33, thespeaker 33 may be used to provide audio output (i.e. sounds) that are representative of the sounds emitted by the character represented by the carryingvessel 1. For example, thespeaker 33 shown in the figures may be used to emit meowing sounds. - The carrying
vessel 1 may optionally include aninput sensor 36. Theinput sensor 36 receives input and sends signals to thecontrol unit 6 based on the input. Theinput sensor 36 may be a camera, and may thus transmit image data to thecontrol unit 6. Theinput sensor 36 may be a microphone and may thus transmit audio data to thecontrol unit 6. Theinput sensor 36 may be a touch sensor, in which case it transmits signals to thecontrol unit 6 based on sensing touch, or alternatively touch that is applied with at least a selected force. - The
input sensor 36 may be connected to thecontrol unit 6 by way of anelectrical conduit 34. Theelectrical conduit 34 may pass through a conduit space R in the same manner that theelectric conduit 5 does. - In embodiments in which the
input sensor 36 is a touch sensor (as shown inFigure 1 ), theinput sensor 36 may be positioned in a suitable place for the user to pat the character. For example, in an embodiment where the character that is represented is a cat, theinput sensor 36 may be positioned in a region representing a top of the head of the cat. Theinput sensor 36 is thus positioned to detect patting of the carryingvessel 1 in at least one selected location of theouter surface 30. - In embodiments in which the
input sensor 36 is a microphone, theinput sensor 36 could be used to detect speech by the user that is holding the carryingdevice 1. For example, the user could say a particular character feature and thecontrol unit 6 could be programmed to move that character feature (if that character feature is an animate character feature 2). - In some embodiments, the
input sensor 36 is a Bluetooth card, and can therefore detect RF output from an RF transmitter such as an RF transmitter on a second one of the carryingvessel 1. Thecontrol unit 6 may be programmed to emit at least one output based on the output detected from the second one of the carryingvessel 1. In other embodiments, where theinput sensor 36 is a microphone, thecontrol unit 6 may be programmed to detect the sounds coming from thespeaker 33 on a second one of the carryingvessel 1, and to emit at least one output (such as a sound from its own speaker 33) based on the sound outputted from the second one of the carryingvessel 1. For example, thecontrol unit 6 may be programmed to cause theleft eyelid 8b to move to a closed (winking) position and for thespeaker 33 to emit a meow, upon detection of a meowing sound emitted by thespeaker 33 from a second one of the carryingvessel 1. - The Bluetooth card may additionally be identified as a wireless communications interface shown at 39 in
Figure 8 , which is connected to thecontrol unit 6 by anelectrical conduit 38. The Bluetooth card may be used to communicate with a portable electronic device such as a smartphone, enabling the carryingvessel 1 to notify the user of its state or charge or other information, or to receive updates to the programming of thecontrol unit 6 in certain embodiments. - The conduit space R formed in the
main body 10 may optionally be accessed from aconduit access port 20, which may be, for example, an opening (Figure 5 ) in the inner layer 17b. Theconduit access port 20 may include an optionalopenable closure 21 such as a zipper, or a hook-and-loop fastener, or overlapping flaps of material from the inner layer 17b of material. Permitting the user to access theelectrical conduits electrical conduits - A suitable connection is formed by a
first connector 19a on thecover 16 and asecond connector 19b on thestorage member 14 so as to enable the user to easily close and open the carryingvessel 1. For example, thefirst connector 19a may be a magnet and the second connector 18b may be a magnetically responsible member, such as another magnet or a member that is ferromagnetic. - Referring to
Figure 2 , thefirst ring 22 is attached to thestorage member 14 on each side of thestorage member 14, specifically to the side walls 13b. Alink 24 is connected to eachfirst ring 22. Asecond ring 25 is rotatably connected to eachlink 24. Theshoulder strap 23 is connected to the second rings 25. Theshoulder strap 23 is usable by the user to carry the carryingvessel 1 on the user's shoulder (not shown), as is well-known in the art of purses. Ahandle 26 is also provided to permit the user to hold the carryingvessel 1 without using theshoulder strap 23. - By providing at least one animate character feature to the carrying
vessel 1, the carryingvessel 1 may provide the illusion of being the represented character and of being alive. This effect is enhanced further by providing theinput sensor 36, which then permits the operation of theanimate character feature 2 to be responsive to events in the environment of the carryingvessel 1. - Those skilled in the art will appreciate that the embodiments disclosed herein can be modified or adapted in various other ways whilst still keeping within the scope of the appended claims.
