Definitions

  • the present invention relates to a door system for a cabinet, comprising at least one door panel intended and configured to at least partially close a cabinet space of the cabinet, wherein the door panel is intended and configured to be suspended pivotally about a pivot axis, comprising a first hinge device at a first outer end of the pivot axis and a second hinge device at an opposite outer end of the pivot axis, wherein each of the hinge devices comprises a first hinge part to be connected to a wall of the cabinet and a second hinge part connected to the door panel, and wherein the first and second hinge part of each of the hinge devices can be connected with a mutual freedom of rotation around the pivot axis.
  • Such a door system is particularly intended for fitting in or on an upright cooling display case as used on a large scale in supermarkets and other shops for cooled storage and display for sale of food products and beverages.
  • This is usually a chamber, closed on three sides by thermally insulated walls, in a cabinet, also referred to as cooling cabinet, with a conditioned internal climate provided for by a refrigerator installation coupled thereto.
  • the cabinet On a dispensing side the cabinet is provided with one or more access doors so that customers have direct access to the wares on offer.
  • the shelves in such cooling cabinets will here often continue above human height and can have a width in the order of a metre to several metres.
  • the access doors comprise one or more panels with corresponding dimensions. In a known cool door system these are transparent panels of glass or a transparent plastic in order to provide a view of the displayed wares even in closed state.
  • the two hinge devices comprise a first hinge part which is connected fixedly to the cabinet in combination with a second hinge part on the door panel.
  • the two hinge parts are mutually coupled with freedom of rotation through an optionally bounded angle via a hinge pin, whereby the door panel is free to swing open from the cabinet. This requires an accurate alignment of the two hinge devices relative to each other and relative to the intended pivot axis.
  • the present invention has for its object, among others, to provide a door system which can be installed in relatively simple and accurate manner, both in new cooling cabinets and retrospectively.
  • a door system of the type described in the preamble has the feature according to the invention that the door system comprises an elongate mounting profile with an open profile chamber which extends axially therein and which is bounded by a bottom and opposite walls, which mounting profile is intended and configured to be connected to a wall of the cabinet, that the profile chamber comprises in the opposite walls a guide extending axially therein, that at least said first hinge part is adjustable in the profile chamber and is provided for this purpose on each of the opposite longitudinal sides with at least one guide member which is received in the guide of the adjacent wall of the profile chamber and is axially movable therein.
  • the invention thus provides a mounting profile having therein a profile chamber in which the first hinge part of at least one of the two hinges can be arranged.
  • the mounting profile thereby provides a fixed and stable mounting base, irrespective of an underlying construction of the cabinet, while the relevant component of the door system can be anchored yet nevertheless axially adjusted in the guide in order to thus enable correct alignment thereof relative to any other components of the door system in relatively simple manner.
  • the guide particularly comprises for instance a slot, groove or other recess in the relevant wall of the profile chamber, into which the guide member then protrudes. This is particularly a local lateral extension of the profile chamber with walls and a bottom.
  • the door system is here characterized in that the door system comprises on opposite sides of the pivot axis an at least substantially identical mounting profile, that each of the first hinge parts can be received in the profile chamber of the adjacent mounted profile, and that each of the first hinge parts is provided on either side with at least one guide member which protrudes laterally and is received in the guide of the adjacent wall of the profile chamber and is axially movable therein.
  • fitting of the door system involves not much more than placing and mounting the two mounting profiles on opposite sides against or in the cabinet. In the case of an adequate vertical alignment of the two mounting profiles the placing of the door system is then relatively simple, quick and forgiving.
  • the mounting profiles extend particularly over at least substantially a whole width of the cabinet space to be closed.
  • the first hinge parts can optionally already be arranged therein beforehand, before the mounting profiles are mounted, but can optionally also be placeable therein afterwards.
  • the one or more guide members are comprised by a mounting base on which the first hinge part is mounted.
  • the mounting base thus provides on the one hand for an adjustment and adaptation to the mounting profile, while a mounting base for the first hinge part is provided on the other hand.
  • a further particular embodiment of the door system has the feature according to the invention that the mounting base comprises a base plate and that the guide members are provided on the base plate, and more particularly that guide members comprise edge parts of the base plate, particularly one or more wings or tongues, which are formed integrally with the base plate on either side.
  • the base plate thus provides for a flat guide in the walls of the profile chamber and furthermore provides a sturdy mounting base for the first hinge part.
  • the door system according to the invention is characterized here in that the base plate is tiltable in the profile chamber so as to be received with opposite edge parts in opposite guides.
  • the base plate is thus not only received in the guide for lateral movement but is moreover tiltable therein, the base plate, and thereby the first hinge part connected or to be connected thereto, can also be placed in the guide from above, this in addition to being slid laterally therein beforehand. This is particularly advantageous in the event of a fitting or change-over in an existing situation if the mounting profile has already been built in.
  • a further preferred embodiment of the door system according to the invention is characterized in that the mounting base comprises a carriage in which the first hinge part can be received, which carriage comprises a set of downward directed hook members, each having therein an axial slot in which can be received a wing or tongue of the base plate corresponding therewith, and that the carriage is connected to the base plate by combining the wings or tongues and slots, and particularly in that the slot narrows over at least a part of a length thereof and the relevant tongue clamps fixedly therein.
  • the carriage can here on the one hand be adapted to fittingly receive the first hinge part, while the carriage can on the other hand be slid onto the base plate by sliding the hook members with their slot over the wings or tongues extending from the base plate.
  • the base plate in turn provides for a guiding and anchoring in the profile chamber.
  • a further embodiment of the door system has the feature here that locking means are provided to lock the carriage and the base plate in a mutually connected position. This locking provides for a non-breakable coupling between the carriage with the first hinge part therein on one side and the base plate on the other.
  • the base plate is in turn fixed in the profile in the correct position by fixation means provided for this purpose.
  • the locking means and the fixation means comprise a shared fixation member or locking member. The same locking member thus provides for both a locking of the carriage on the base plate and for a fixation of the base plate in the mounting profile. Not only does this save time; it moreover reduces the chance of one of the two fixations being unintentionally refrained from.
  • the first hinge part can optionally also be adapted specifically to the mounting profile.
  • a particular embodiment of the door system has the feature according to the invention that the first hinge part comprises on either side a set of resilient walls which provide the guide members, which walls can be pressed toward each other. By moving the two walls toward each other space can be created for the hinge part to be placed into the profile chamber. The walls then spring back as soon as the guide members slip into the guide.
  • the guide members comprise for instance a rib or ridge formed on the relevant wall, or a shoulder or flange which is formed thereon in other manner, which is received fittingly in the guide.
  • the first hinge part comprises two mutually axially adjustable hinge bodies which together define a hinge cavity for a hinge pin extending from the second hinge part, wherein an axial adjustment of the two hinge bodies imposes a position of the hinge cavity in a transverse direction.
  • the mounting profile can also be applied for mounting other system components of the door system.
  • a further particular embodiment of the door system has the feature according to the invention that a doorstop device can be received in the profile chamber, comprising a doorstop member against which the door panel rests in closed position, and that the doorstop device comprises at least one guide member which protrudes laterally and can be received for axial movement in the guide of an adjacent wall of the profile chamber.
  • the door system according to the invention is here more particularly characterized in that the doorstop device comprises a base plate on which the doorstop member is mounted, wherein the at least one guide member comprises an edge part of the base plate, particularly a tongue formed integrally with the base plate, and wherein the base plate is tiltable in the profile chamber in order to be received with the edge part in a guide.
  • a doorstop device is thus placeable and axially adjustable in the mounting profile in similar manner as a door hinge.
  • the doorstop device can also be secured and fixed in the mounting profile in similar manner.
  • a further preferred embodiment of the door system according to the invention has the feature that the mounting profile comprises an extruded body having at least substantially the same cross-section over a length thereof, particularly a plastic body.
  • a plastic mounting profile can not only be manufactured with sufficient strength and robustness at a relatively low cost price by means of extrusion or co-extrusion, but moreover avoids a cold bridge between an internal (cold) climate of the cabinet on the one hand and a (warm) environment on the other.
  • a further particular embodiment of the door system has the feature that the mounting profile is provided with a flexible fin which the at least one door panel comes substantially sealingly up against in a closed position.
  • a flexible fin can be provided such that in a closed position of the door panel the fin supports thereon with a certain resilience and so limits a mutual gap to a minimum.
  • the fin can be formed integrally with the mounting profile by extrusion or co-extrusion from optionally the same material, or be connected detachably thereto. The latter allows simple replacement in the event of ageing of or damage to the fin.
  • the invention particularly provides a solution in a door system with one or more door panels which are transparent in order to thus provide an unobstructed view of the contents of the cabinet.
  • a particular embodiment of the door system has the feature here according to the invention that the door panel is double-walled, comprising a first at least substantially plate-like plate body and an at least substantially plane-parallel second at least substantially plate-like plate body, which are mutually connected at their periphery in frameless manner and enclose a cavity.
  • Such frameless door panels can be manufactured particularly well from plastic.
  • a further particular embodiment of the door system has the feature according to the invention that the two plate bodies are formed from a transparent plastic, particularly from polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) or polycarbonate, that a first of the two plate bodies is completely flat and the other of the two plate bodies is formed, particularly deformed, and comprises at least substantially a central part which transposes all around into a deeper-lying edge part, wherein the edge part is adhered over a whole periphery of the door panel to a corresponding edge part of the first plate body, particularly glued thereto.
  • PMMA polymethyl methacrylate
  • the invention also relates to a mounting profile for a door system, comprising a profile chamber which extends axially therein and is bounded by a bottom and opposite walls, which mounting profile is intended and configured to be connected to a wall of the cabinet, characterized in that in each of the opposite walls of the profile chamber extends axially a guide in which can be received a guide member which is axially movable therein and which forms part of a system component of the door system, particularly of a system component taken from a group comprising a hinge part and a doorstop device for a door panel.
  • the mounting profile can be provided with a cover strip and end caps, if desired.
  • FIG. 1 shows schematically in perspective view a door system according to the present invention.
  • the door system comprises four successive door panels 30, although in practice the door system can be embodied from a single door panel to even more than the four door panels 30 shown here.
  • the system can be utilized mainly to close vertical cooling display cases as used in many supermarkets and other shops. Energy is hereby saved in that the cooled interior space of the climate-controlled cooling cabinet is then no longer in open communication with the surrounding area.
  • the cooling cabinet comprises a cabinet with an interior space over which are distributed a number of shelves placed adjacently of each other and one above the other, wherein the interior space is accessible by one or more outward-swinging doors 30.
  • Only a set of mounting strips 10 is shown in the figure, but the remaining construction is assumed sufficiently known to a person with ordinary skill in the art to not require further elucidation here.
  • the example is based on double-walled door panels 30, see figure 2 , each formed from a first plate body 31 and a second plate body 32, enclosing a thermally insulating cavity 33.
  • the two plate bodies 31, 32 are formed from a transparent plastic, for which use is made in this example of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) or polycarbonate.
  • a first of the two plate bodies 32 is completely flat, while the other of the two plate bodies 31 is thermally deformed so that it comprises substantially a central part which transposes all around into a deeper-lying edge part 34.
  • the edge part 34 is adhered over a whole periphery of the door panel 30 to a corresponding edge part of the first plate body 32 by gluing it thereto while exerting an appropriate pressure force. This results in a completely transparent, frameless door panel which counteracts condensation owing to the insulating action of the cavity and provides an unobstructed view of the wares displayed in the cabinet.
  • Edge part 34 of the door panel moreover provides a base for mounting of a (second) hinge part 35, 36, 37, see also figure 10 , of opposite hinge devices 40, 50 whereby the door panel is suspended in the cabinet for pivoting about an upright pivot axis.
  • these hinge devices 40, 50 are mounted in a mounting profile 20, an exemplary embodiment of which is shown in cross-section in figure 3 .
  • This mounting profile moreover provides space for a doorstop device 70 which a free side of door panel 30 comes up against resiliently when it is closed in order to thus impose a defined, mutually identical, closed position on door panels 30.
  • a handle 60 on door panels 30 enables a user to open the relevant door panel.
  • Fitting of the door system shown in figure 1 is based substantially on a set of mounting profiles 20 on opposite sides of the pivot axes of the door panels, i.e. top and bottom, see figure 1 .
  • This mounting profile is shown in cross-section in figure 3 and comprises here an extrusion profile of a suitable plastic, such as the polyvinyl chloride (PVC) used here.
  • PVC polyvinyl chloride
  • ABS acrylonitrile butadiene styrene
  • metals such as aluminium can also be used for the mounting profile 20, many plastics have the advantage, in addition to a low material price, that their low thermal transmissivity counteracts a cold bridge between the cold internal climate in the cabinet and the surrounding area.
  • Profile 20 comprises an elongate profile chamber 25 which extends axially therein and is open from an upper side.
  • the profile chamber is bounded on either side by a set of side walls 21, 22 and has a closed bottom 23.
  • a central groove 24 in the bottom provides a convenient reference and starting point for placing self-tapping screws whereby the profile can be screwed fixedly into cabinet 10.
  • an axial guide 27 which is arranged in each of the opposite walls 21, 22 of the profile chamber.
  • the guide comprises a lateral extension, recess or wing 27 on profile chamber 25, which is closed all the way around and is formed integrally with profile 20.
  • a separate strip (rail) can optionally also be placed for the purpose of an axial guiding in the relevant wall 21, 22.
  • the mounting profile further comprises externally a set of wings 26, 29 for receiving a cover strip, see also figure 13 .
  • the lower hinge device 50 applied in the door system is shown in further detail in figures 4-6 .
  • a panel hinge 55 available on the market as standard product, having a protruding hinge shaft 57 which is rotatable about a vertical axis counter to a spring force.
  • This spring force is not continuous, but has a spring characteristic which provides for a soft landing (soft close) of the door panel, after first swinging closed more quickly with more spring force until reaching doorstop device 70.
  • a mounting base in the form of a carriage 53 which is adapted to the dimensions of door hinge 55, and a base plate 51 which provides a set of guide members 52 which fall into the guide 27 of the mounting profile and are axially movable therein.
  • Carriage 53 is here formed by a set of walls 53 which are screwed against the housing of hinge 55.
  • Base plate 51 and carriage 53 are thick-walled steel components, for instance of stainless steel, and thereby provide strength and durability.
  • the guide members comprise successive edge parts of the base plate, which are formed thereon in the form of a set of steel wings/tongues 52.
  • Carriage 53 in turn comprises a set of downward directed hook members 54 with axial slots 56 therein.
  • the base plate is dimensioned such that it is tiltable in profile chamber 25.
  • the base plate is first inserted with a first longitudinal side deep into the guide 27 of the one wall 21, 22 and then lowered into profile chamber 25, after which the base plate can be placed into the guide 27 of the opposite wall 22, 21.
  • the carriage 53 with hinge 55 is then combined with base plate 51 in the above-described manner and the bolts 58 are arranged.
  • Bolts 58 protrude through base plate 51 so that they lock the carriage onto the base plate with their head and reach to the bottom 23 of the profile chamber with their outer end.
  • By tightening bolts 58 firmly against bottom 23 the position of hinge device 50 in mounting profile 20 can thus be fixed, see figure 6 .
  • hinge part 50 is still axially movable with guide tongues 52 in guide 27, so that an axial adjustment and alignment of hinge 50 can be performed in relatively simple manner.
  • the second hinge part 35 which is mounted thereon is placed onto the protruding hinge shaft 57.
  • the second hinge part comprises a hollow bushing with an internal chamber which is complementary to the rectangular head of the hinge shaft, so that a non-rotatable coupling results therebetween.
  • This connection can be secured by means of an Allen bolt, via a threaded bore provided for this purpose in a flank of bushing part 35.
  • This hinge device 40 comprises a set of hinge bodies 41, 42 which are both formed from glass fibre-filled polyamide, for instance by injection moulding. These are a first body 41 which can be placed in the hollow second body 42 in order to thus provide a shape lock which confines the depending walls 48 of the second part. Without the inserted first body 41, the two walls 48 of second body 42 are resilient and can be pressed toward each other.
  • the external dimensions of second body 42 are adapted to the internal dimension of profile chamber 25, wherein a shoulder 47 formed on the walls reaches into guide 27.
  • the second body 42 By moving the two walls 48 toward each other the second body 42 can be inserted into profile chamber 25 from the top, until the two shoulders 47 slip into the guide counter to the resilience of the walls, see also figure 10 .
  • First body 41 is then placed inside second body 42 in order to thus provide a shape lock which confines this hinge part in the profile chamber.
  • the two hinge bodies together define a hinge cavity 43, 44 for a hinge pin 37 which protrudes from a second hinge part 36 which is mounted on panel 30, see also figure 9 .
  • Cavity 43 in one of the two bodies 41 is here placed at an angle relative to the cavity 44 in the other body 42.
  • a position of the hinge cavity in which hinge pin 37 will be received is thereby adjustable in transverse direction by a lateral adjustment of the two parts relative to each other.
  • a slight forward or rearward incline can thus be imparted to panel 30 and/or the top hinge 40 can be aligned correctly with the lower 50 so that a centre line of hinge pin 37 coincides with a rotation axis of the hinge shaft 57 which extends from lower hinge 50.
  • the relatively solid first hinge body comprises a set of wings with therein a set of securing bolts 46 with which this hinge part, just as the base plate of the lower hinge 50, can be clamped fixedly between the bottom 23 of profile chamber 25 and a roof of guide 27, and can thus be fixed in the mounting profile.
  • hinge part 40 is freely axially movable with wings 47 in guide 27 so as to be adjustable to the correct position. It is otherwise noted that, although the first hinge part of both lower hinge 50 and upper hinge 40 can be placed into the profile chamber from above, as described, the two parts can also be slid therein laterally from an end side. This is even possible in an already assembled state.
  • the different components are therefore advantageously already arranged in the mounting profile and set roughly to the correct position beforehand, and fixed in the mounting profile once the mounting profile has been made to the correct length.
  • FIGs 11 and 12 show a doorstop device which is highly suitable for application with the shown door panel 30 and the mounting profile 20.
  • the doorstop device comprises a doorstop member 72 for each of the door panels, which connects in contour-following manner to the profile of the transition to the edge part 34 of second plate 31 of door panel 30.
  • the plastic doorstop member is mounted on a steel base plate 71 which falls with a distal edge part 73 into guide 27 of profile chamber 25, see figure 12 .
  • Base plate 71 support here with a back against the opposite wall 21 of profile chamber 25, so that a fit is obtained therein which allows doorstop device 70 to be tilted with base plate 71 in profile chamber 25.
  • doorstop device 70 is laterally adjustable in profile 20.
  • doorstop device 70 takes a double form, with a doorstop member 72 for each of a set of adjacent door panels 30.
  • a single embodiment is also possible instead.
  • the profile chamber can be covered with a cover strip 80.
  • cover strip 80 Formed for this purpose on the mounting profile are wings 26, 29 into which the cover strip falls or with which the cover strip maintains a snap connection.
  • cover strip 80 At the position of hinges 40, 50 of door panels 30 and each doorstop device 70 corresponding recesses are arranged in strip 80. With the exception of these, cover strip 80 fully closes the profile chamber so that no dirt can accumulate therein and an attractive final result is furthermore obtained.

Description

This is usually a chamber, closed on three sides by thermally insulated walls, in a cabinet, also referred to as cooling cabinet, with a conditioned internal climate provided for by a refrigerator installation coupled thereto. On a dispensing side the cabinet is provided with one or more access doors so that customers have direct access to the wares on offer. The shelves in such cooling cabinets will here often continue above human height and can have a width in the order of a metre to several metres. In that case the access doors comprise one or more panels with corresponding dimensions. In a known cool door system these are transparent panels of glass or a transparent plastic in order to provide a view of the displayed wares even in closed state.
  • These panels are connected to the cabinet for pivoting about a vertical pivot axis, wherein a first hinge device is applied for this purpose at a first outer end of the pivot axis and a second hinge device at an opposite, second outer end of the pivot axis. The two hinge devices comprise a first hinge part which is connected fixedly to the cabinet in combination with a second hinge part on the door panel. The two hinge parts are mutually coupled with freedom of rotation through an optionally bounded angle via a hinge pin, whereby the door panel is free to swing open from the cabinet. This requires an accurate alignment of the two hinge devices relative to each other and relative to the intended pivot axis. This is difficult especially in the case of relatively high doors, and correct mounting and adjustment of the door panels often requires a relatively large amount of time, this in addition to requiring insight and professional skill. This is already an issue in cooling cabinets to be newly manufactured. But it is especially when retrofitting existing cooling cabinets, which were not yet equipped with a door system (before), that fitting of a door system is found to be particularly time-consuming and often problematic.
  • The present invention has for its object, among others, to provide a door system which can be installed in relatively simple and accurate manner, both in new cooling cabinets and retrospectively.
  • In order to achieve the stated objective a door system of the type described in the preamble has the feature according to the invention that the door system comprises an elongate mounting profile with an open profile chamber which extends axially therein and which is bounded by a bottom and opposite walls, which mounting profile is intended and configured to be connected to a wall of the cabinet, that the profile chamber comprises in the opposite walls a guide extending axially therein, that at least said first hinge part is adjustable in the profile chamber and is provided for this purpose on each of the opposite longitudinal sides with at least one guide member which is received in the guide of the adjacent wall of the profile chamber and is axially movable therein.
  • The invention thus provides a mounting profile having therein a profile chamber in which the first hinge part of at least one of the two hinges can be arranged. The mounting profile thereby provides a fixed and stable mounting base, irrespective of an underlying construction of the cabinet, while the relevant component of the door system can be anchored yet nevertheless axially adjusted in the guide in order to thus enable correct alignment thereof relative to any other components of the door system in relatively simple manner. The guide particularly comprises for instance a slot, groove or other recess in the relevant wall of the profile chamber, into which the guide member then protrudes. This is particularly a local lateral extension of the profile chamber with walls and a bottom.
  • In a preferred embodiment the door system according to the invention is here characterized in that the door system comprises on opposite sides of the pivot axis an at least substantially identical mounting profile, that each of the first hinge parts can be received in the profile chamber of the adjacent mounted profile, and that each of the first hinge parts is provided on either side with at least one guide member which protrudes laterally and is received in the guide of the adjacent wall of the profile chamber and is axially movable therein. In that case fitting of the door system involves not much more than placing and mounting the two mounting profiles on opposite sides against or in the cabinet. In the case of an adequate vertical alignment of the two mounting profiles the placing of the door system is then relatively simple, quick and forgiving.
  • The mounting profiles extend particularly over at least substantially a whole width of the cabinet space to be closed. The first hinge parts can optionally already be arranged therein beforehand, before the mounting profiles are mounted, but can optionally also be placeable therein afterwards. In order to be able to use door hinges available as standard product a particular embodiment of the door system according to the invention has the feature here that the one or more guide members are comprised by a mounting base on which the first hinge part is mounted. The mounting base thus provides on the one hand for an adjustment and adaptation to the mounting profile, while a mounting base for the first hinge part is provided on the other hand.
The base plate thus provides for a flat guide in the walls of the profile chamber and furthermore provides a sturdy mounting base for the first hinge part. In a preferred embodiment the door system according to the invention is characterized here in that the base plate is tiltable in the profile chamber so as to be received with opposite edge parts in opposite guides. Because the base plate is thus not only received in the guide for lateral movement but is moreover tiltable therein, the base plate, and thereby the first hinge part connected or to be connected thereto, can also be placed in the guide from above, this in addition to being slid laterally therein beforehand.
The carriage can here on the one hand be adapted to fittingly receive the first hinge part, while the carriage can on the other hand be slid onto the base plate by sliding the hook members with their slot over the wings or tongues extending from the base plate. The base plate in turn provides for a guiding and anchoring in the profile chamber.
  • In order to secure this position, a further embodiment of the door system has the feature here that locking means are provided to lock the carriage and the base plate in a mutually connected position. This locking provides for a non-breakable coupling between the carriage with the first hinge part therein on one side and the base plate on the other. In a further particular embodiment of the door system the base plate is in turn fixed in the profile in the correct position by fixation means provided for this purpose. A further particular embodiment has the feature here according to the invention that the locking means and the fixation means comprise a shared fixation member or locking member.
In this respect a particular embodiment of the door system has the feature according to the invention that the first hinge part comprises on either side a set of resilient walls which provide the guide members, which walls can be pressed toward each other. By moving the two walls toward each other space can be created for the hinge part to be placed into the profile chamber. The walls then spring back as soon as the guide members slip into the guide. The guide members comprise for instance a rib or ridge formed on the relevant wall, or a shoulder or flange which is formed thereon in other manner, which is received fittingly in the guide.
  • An axial adjustment of the first hinge part in the profile chamber enables the relevant door panel to be adjusted in axial direction. In order also to be able to adjust the panel forward or rearward a further particular embodiment of the door system has the feature according to the invention that the first hinge part comprises two mutually axially adjustable hinge bodies which together define a hinge cavity for a hinge pin extending from the second hinge part, wherein an axial adjustment of the two hinge bodies imposes a position of the hinge cavity in a transverse direction. By thus mutually adjusting the two bodies and so moving this point of the pivot axis more toward the front or more toward the rear in transverse direction, the door panel will move more toward the front or toward the rear. This provides an excellent opportunity to align this pivot point perpendicularly with the opposite outer end of the pivot axis. A further particular embodiment of the door system has the feature here according to the invention that fixation means are provided to fix the two hinge bodies relative to each other.
  • Besides being applied as mounting base for the hinge parts, the mounting profile can also be applied for mounting other system components of the door system. In this respect a further particular embodiment of the door system has the feature according to the invention that a doorstop device can be received in the profile chamber, comprising a doorstop member against which the door panel rests in closed position, and that the doorstop device comprises at least one guide member which protrudes laterally and can be received for axial movement in the guide of an adjacent wall of the profile chamber.
A doorstop device is thus placeable and axially adjustable in the mounting profile in similar manner as a door hinge. By means of a fixation member provided in the base plate for this purpose the doorstop device can also be secured and fixed in the mounting profile in similar manner.
  • A further preferred embodiment of the door system according to the invention has the feature that the mounting profile comprises an extruded body having at least substantially the same cross-section over a length thereof, particularly a plastic body. Such a plastic mounting profile can not only be manufactured with sufficient strength and robustness at a relatively low cost price by means of extrusion or co-extrusion, but moreover avoids a cold bridge between an internal (cold) climate of the cabinet on the one hand and a (warm) environment on the other.
  • With a view to a thermal separation of the interior space in the cabinet relative to the surrounding area a further particular embodiment of the door system according to the invention has the feature that the mounting profile is provided with a flexible fin which the at least one door panel comes substantially sealingly up against in a closed position. Such a flexible fin can be provided such that in a closed position of the door panel the fin supports thereon with a certain resilience and so limits a mutual gap to a minimum. The fin can be formed integrally with the mounting profile by extrusion or co-extrusion from optionally the same material, or be connected detachably thereto. The latter allows simple replacement in the event of ageing of or damage to the fin.
  • The invention particularly provides a solution in a door system with one or more door panels which are transparent in order to thus provide an unobstructed view of the contents of the cabinet. A particular embodiment of the door system has the feature here according to the invention that the door panel is double-walled, comprising a first at least substantially plate-like plate body and an at least substantially plane-parallel second at least substantially plate-like plate body, which are mutually connected at their periphery in frameless manner and enclose a cavity.
  • Such frameless door panels can be manufactured particularly well from plastic. In this respect a further particular embodiment of the door system has the feature according to the invention that the two plate bodies are formed from a transparent plastic, particularly from polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) or polycarbonate, that a first of the two plate bodies is completely flat and the other of the two plate bodies is formed, particularly deformed, and comprises at least substantially a central part which transposes all around into a deeper-lying edge part, wherein the edge part is adhered over a whole periphery of the door panel to a corresponding edge part of the first plate body, particularly glued thereto.
With a view to an attractive finish the mounting profile can be provided with a cover strip and end caps, if desired.

  • It is otherwise noted here that the figures are purely schematic and not always drawn to (the same) scale. Some dimensions in particular may be exaggerated to greater or lesser extent for the sake of clarity. Corresponding parts are designated in the figures with the same reference numeral.
  • Figure 1 shows schematically in perspective view a door system according to the present invention. In this case the door system comprises four successive door panels 30, although in practice the door system can be embodied from a single door panel to even more than the four door panels 30 shown here. The system can be utilized mainly to close vertical cooling display cases as used in many supermarkets and other shops. Energy is hereby saved in that the cooled interior space of the climate-controlled cooling cabinet is then no longer in open communication with the surrounding area. The cooling cabinet comprises a cabinet with an interior space over which are distributed a number of shelves placed adjacently of each other and one above the other, wherein the interior space is accessible by one or more outward-swinging doors 30. Of the cabinet, only a set of mounting strips 10 is shown in the figure, but the remaining construction is assumed sufficiently known to a person with ordinary skill in the art to not require further elucidation here.
  • The example is based on double-walled door panels 30, see figure 2, each formed from a first plate body 31 and a second plate body 32, enclosing a thermally insulating cavity 33. The two plate bodies 31, 32 are formed from a transparent plastic, for which use is made in this example of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) or polycarbonate. A first of the two plate bodies 32 is completely flat, while the other of the two plate bodies 31 is thermally deformed so that it comprises substantially a central part which transposes all around into a deeper-lying edge part 34. The edge part 34 is adhered over a whole periphery of the door panel 30 to a corresponding edge part of the first plate body 32 by gluing it thereto while exerting an appropriate pressure force. This results in a completely transparent, frameless door panel which counteracts condensation owing to the insulating action of the cavity and provides an unobstructed view of the wares displayed in the cabinet.
  • Edge part 34 of the door panel moreover provides a base for mounting of a (second) hinge part 35, 36, 37, see also figure 10, of opposite hinge devices 40, 50 whereby the door panel is suspended in the cabinet for pivoting about an upright pivot axis. For this purpose these hinge devices 40, 50 according to the invention are mounted in a mounting profile 20, an exemplary embodiment of which is shown in cross-section in figure 3. This mounting profile moreover provides space for a doorstop device 70 which a free side of door panel 30 comes up against resiliently when it is closed in order to thus impose a defined, mutually identical, closed position on door panels 30. A handle 60 on door panels 30 enables a user to open the relevant door panel.
  • Fitting of the door system shown in figure 1 is based substantially on a set of mounting profiles 20 on opposite sides of the pivot axes of the door panels, i.e. top and bottom, see figure 1. This mounting profile is shown in cross-section in figure 3 and comprises here an extrusion profile of a suitable plastic, such as the polyvinyl chloride (PVC) used here. Alternatively, an impact-resistant plastic such as acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) can for instance also be used. Although metals such as aluminium can also be used for the mounting profile 20, many plastics have the advantage, in addition to a low material price, that their low thermal transmissivity counteracts a cold bridge between the cold internal climate in the cabinet and the surrounding area. Profile 20 comprises an elongate profile chamber 25 which extends axially therein and is open from an upper side. The profile chamber is bounded on either side by a set of side walls 21, 22 and has a closed bottom 23. A central groove 24 in the bottom provides a convenient reference and starting point for placing self-tapping screws whereby the profile can be screwed fixedly into cabinet 10.
  • Important for later mounting of different system components in mounting profile 20 is an axial guide 27 which is arranged in each of the opposite walls 21, 22 of the profile chamber. In this case the guide comprises a lateral extension, recess or wing 27 on profile chamber 25, which is closed all the way around and is formed integrally with profile 20. Instead, a separate strip (rail) can optionally also be placed for the purpose of an axial guiding in the relevant wall 21, 22. The mounting profile further comprises externally a set of wings 26, 29 for receiving a cover strip, see also figure 13.
  • The lower hinge device 50 applied in the door system is shown in further detail in figures 4-6. Applied for this purpose is a panel hinge 55 available on the market as standard product, having a protruding hinge shaft 57 which is rotatable about a vertical axis counter to a spring force. This spring force is not continuous, but has a spring characteristic which provides for a soft landing (soft close) of the door panel, after first swinging closed more quickly with more spring force until reaching doorstop device 70. For mounting of hinge 55 in the mounting profile use is in this example made of a mounting base in the form of a carriage 53 which is adapted to the dimensions of door hinge 55, and a base plate 51 which provides a set of guide members 52 which fall into the guide 27 of the mounting profile and are axially movable therein. Carriage 53 is here formed by a set of walls 53 which are screwed against the housing of hinge 55.
  • Base plate 51 and carriage 53 are thick-walled steel components, for instance of stainless steel, and thereby provide strength and durability. The guide members comprise successive edge parts of the base plate, which are formed thereon in the form of a set of steel wings/tongues 52. Carriage 53 in turn comprises a set of downward directed hook members 54 with axial slots 56 therein. By placing base plate 51 into carriage 53 as indicated by the arrow in figure 4, and herein sliding the tongues 52 into the slots 56, the two parts of the mounting base are mutually connected. Slots 56 rise here and narrow at their outer end, whereby base plate 51 is finally clamped fixedly in carriage 53, see figure 5. This position can be locked by means of securing means provided for this purpose in the form of a set of securing bolts 58. It is important that the guide tongues 52 now still protrude laterally.
  • The base plate is dimensioned such that it is tiltable in profile chamber 25. For this purpose the base plate is first inserted with a first longitudinal side deep into the guide 27 of the one wall 21, 22 and then lowered into profile chamber 25, after which the base plate can be placed into the guide 27 of the opposite wall 22, 21. The carriage 53 with hinge 55 is then combined with base plate 51 in the above-described manner and the bolts 58 are arranged. Bolts 58 protrude through base plate 51 so that they lock the carriage onto the base plate with their head and reach to the bottom 23 of the profile chamber with their outer end. By tightening bolts 58 firmly against bottom 23 the position of hinge device 50 in mounting profile 20 can thus be fixed, see figure 6. Before this, hinge part 50 is still axially movable with guide tongues 52 in guide 27, so that an axial adjustment and alignment of hinge 50 can be performed in relatively simple manner.
  • In order to mount panel 30 the second hinge part 35 which is mounted thereon is placed onto the protruding hinge shaft 57. The second hinge part comprises a hollow bushing with an internal chamber which is complementary to the rectangular head of the hinge shaft, so that a non-rotatable coupling results therebetween. This connection can be secured by means of an Allen bolt, via a threaded bore provided for this purpose in a flank of bushing part 35.
  • Situated on an opposite side of the pivot shaft of each panel 30 is an upper hinge device 40, which is shown in more detail in figures 7-10. This hinge device 40 comprises a set of hinge bodies 41, 42 which are both formed from glass fibre-filled polyamide, for instance by injection moulding. These are a first body 41 which can be placed in the hollow second body 42 in order to thus provide a shape lock which confines the depending walls 48 of the second part. Without the inserted first body 41, the two walls 48 of second body 42 are resilient and can be pressed toward each other. The external dimensions of second body 42 are adapted to the internal dimension of profile chamber 25, wherein a shoulder 47 formed on the walls reaches into guide 27. By moving the two walls 48 toward each other the second body 42 can be inserted into profile chamber 25 from the top, until the two shoulders 47 slip into the guide counter to the resilience of the walls, see also figure 10. First body 41 is then placed inside second body 42 in order to thus provide a shape lock which confines this hinge part in the profile chamber.
  • The two hinge bodies together define a hinge cavity 43, 44 for a hinge pin 37 which protrudes from a second hinge part 36 which is mounted on panel 30, see also figure 9. Cavity 43 in one of the two bodies 41 is here placed at an angle relative to the cavity 44 in the other body 42. A position of the hinge cavity in which hinge pin 37 will be received is thereby adjustable in transverse direction by a lateral adjustment of the two parts relative to each other. A slight forward or rearward incline can thus be imparted to panel 30 and/or the top hinge 40 can be aligned correctly with the lower 50 so that a centre line of hinge pin 37 coincides with a rotation axis of the hinge shaft 57 which extends from lower hinge 50.
  • This relative adjustment can be secured by means of a locking screw 45. The relatively solid first hinge body comprises a set of wings with therein a set of securing bolts 46 with which this hinge part, just as the base plate of the lower hinge 50, can be clamped fixedly between the bottom 23 of profile chamber 25 and a roof of guide 27, and can thus be fixed in the mounting profile. Until that moment, hinge part 40 is freely axially movable with wings 47 in guide 27 so as to be adjustable to the correct position. It is otherwise noted that, although the first hinge part of both lower hinge 50 and upper hinge 40 can be placed into the profile chamber from above, as described, the two parts can also be slid therein laterally from an end side. This is even possible in an already assembled state. The different components are therefore advantageously already arranged in the mounting profile and set roughly to the correct position beforehand, and fixed in the mounting profile once the mounting profile has been made to the correct length. The same applies to any further system components, such as the doorstop device 70 and cover strip 80 to be described below.
  • Figures 11 and 12 show a doorstop device which is highly suitable for application with the shown door panel 30 and the mounting profile 20. For this purpose the doorstop device comprises a doorstop member 72 for each of the door panels, which connects in contour-following manner to the profile of the transition to the edge part 34 of second plate 31 of door panel 30. The plastic doorstop member is mounted on a steel base plate 71 which falls with a distal edge part 73 into guide 27 of profile chamber 25, see figure 12. Base plate 71 support here with a back against the opposite wall 21 of profile chamber 25, so that a fit is obtained therein which allows doorstop device 70 to be tilted with base plate 71 in profile chamber 25. By means of a set of fixing bolts 74 the base plate 51 is clamped between bottom 23 of profile chamber 25 and the roof of guide 27, so that not only a strong and robust mounting is achieved, but also a lateral fixation in mounting profile 20. Up to this moment, doorstop device 70 is laterally adjustable in profile 20. In the shown example doorstop device 70 takes a double form, with a doorstop member 72 for each of a set of adjacent door panels 30. A single embodiment is also possible instead.
  • Once all the components of the door system have been positioned and fixed correctly, the profile chamber can be covered with a cover strip 80. Formed for this purpose on the mounting profile are wings 26, 29 into which the cover strip falls or with which the cover strip maintains a snap connection. At the position of hinges 40, 50 of door panels 30 and each doorstop device 70 corresponding recesses are arranged in strip 80. With the exception of these, cover strip 80 fully closes the profile chamber so that no dirt can accumulate therein and an attractive final result is furthermore obtained. Cover strip 80 likewise advantageously comprises an extrusion profile of plastic or if desired a metal, such as aluminium, stainless steel or preserved steel.
  • As shown in figure 13, door panel 30 maintains a certain distance to the mounting profile as a tolerance for an unobstructed swing of the panel and particularly for the purpose of placing of the door panels 30 after the first hinge parts of hinges 40, 50 were positioned in the mounting profile. In order to seal the gap 100 created thereby a flexible fin 90, which supports resiliently on the inner wall 31 of panel 30, can be provided on the mounting profile. In this example use is made of a fin which is formed integrally with the mounting profile and is formed thereon by extrusion from the same plastic or by co-extrusion from a suitable different plastic. Instead, a continuous groove in which a separate fin can be mounted can also be provided in mounting profile 20. For this purpose the fin is for instance provided on a lower side with a bead or other profile which snaps into the relevant groove, or at least clamps fixedly therein. Such a separate fin can optionally be replaced in the event of ageing or damage.
  • Although the invention has been further elucidated above on the basis of only several exemplary embodiments, it will be apparent that the invention is by no means limited thereto. On the contrary, many variations and embodiments are still possible within the scope of the invention for a person with ordinary skill in the art.
