Definitions
- the invention relates generally to the field of making watermark paper, and more particularly to a method and apparatus for making a watermark tool for making watermark inserts.
- Watermark paper for banknotes, identity documents and the like are often provided with watermarks during paper production, which allow the authenticity of the security paper to be checked and which at the same time serve as protection against unauthorized reproduction.
- watermark paper it has long been known to bring bronze screen mesh with brass embossing stamps in relief in order to obtain different layer thicknesses of the fibers during paper production. In the finished paper, these lead to a structured halftone image in transparency, the so-called watermark.
- injection molding technology with subsequent laser perforation of the injection molded parts for dewatering in order to produce watermark inserts with a highly accurate injection molding relief.
- the watermark inserts can be welded or glued to a carrier screen or injected directly into the carrier screen.
- an injection molding tool with an injection molding cavity into which plastic can be injected to generate the watermark set and which is provided with a high-resolution multi-level watermark relief in the form of the inverted injection molding relief.
- an injection molding tool with an injection molding cavity is used, into which plastic can be injected to generate the watermark set and which is provided with a high-resolution multi-level watermark relief in the form of the inverted injection molding relief.
- an additive manufacturing method As a layer sequence of a plurality of material layers firmly connected to one another.
- Additively manufactured injection molding tools should in principle be able to produce significantly higher-resolution watermark inserts and thus ultimately significantly higher-contrast watermarks than with injection molding tools that were produced using conventional manufacturing processes.
- 3D printing injection molding tools produced by additive manufacturing processes
- 3D-printed injection molding tools cannot currently be used, primarily because of their relatively rough surface, since the injection molded parts produced are difficult to demold, which leads to bubbles in the dewatering screen. If the surface of the 3D-printed tools is post-treated, this requires an additional process step that requires an additional processing station. This not only raises the problem of the exact positioning of the tool for post-processing, but also the problem of transferring the 3D data of the high-resolution surface relief to the post-processing station.
- the invention is based on the object of overcoming the disadvantages of the prior art and, in particular, of specifying an effective method for producing a watermarking tool suitable for production.
- a watermark tool is a tool for the production of a watermark set, the watermark tool forming an injection-molded cavity into which plastic can be injected in order to generate the watermark set.
- the watermark tool can be designed, for example, in the form of an injection molding tool for the production of a watermark set, which is subsequently used with is connected to a drainage screen.
- the watermark tool can, for example, also represent an injection molding tool with an upper tool part and a lower tool part, the two tool parts receiving a drainage screen provided with a recess between them and forming an injection molding cavity in the area of the recess, so that a watermark insert can be inserted directly into the recess of the drainage screen can be injected.
- the tool blank produced is smoothed step-by-step in step G) in accordance with the steps of the watermark relief determined in step B).
- the height of the steps can correspond to the layer thickness of the layers produced in step E), but the step height can also be a multiple of this layer thickness.
- only those surface areas of the watermark relief are advantageously smoothed on which no further layer was built up in step E).
- the steps of the watermark relief are preferably smoothed sequentially from bottom to top or from top to bottom so that each height step is completely smoothed before the next higher or next lower step is processed.
- the position and extent of the steps and the shape and position of the surface areas to be smoothed in each step are advantageously taken from a data record generated in step B) for describing the high-resolution, multi-step watermark relief.
- the tool blank produced is advantageously smoothed in step G) by laser reflow polishing.
- laser reflow polishing no material is removed, but the surface to be smoothed is melted by the incident laser energy together with any particles adhering to the surface, and thereby the unevenness in the surface integrated and this smoothed.
- the surface tension in the smoothed layers can also be reduced by melting on layer areas close to the edge.
- the tool blank produced is smoothed in step G) in two or more polishing steps that are carried out with different laser parameters.
- a polishing step with continuous wave laser radiation not only eliminates local surface defects due to the continuously existing melt pool, but also effectively reduces surface waviness of the layer to be smoothed.
- a polishing step with pulsed laser radiation enables a particularly precise regulation of the heat flow into the layer surface through the choice of the pulse length and the repetition rate. It is therefore provided in an advantageous embodiment that a polishing step, in particular a first polishing step, is carried out with continuous wave laser radiation and a further polishing step, in particular a subsequent polishing step, is carried out with pulsed laser radiation.
- several polishing steps can be carried out with a relatively low input of energy, in which only one area of the layer to be smoothed close to the surface is melted.
- the tool blank is produced on a movable worktop in step E), and the tool blank generated is moved to different heights on the movable worktop in step G) for smoothing the various stages of the watermark relief.
- the tool blank is advantageously removed from the 3D printing device, the 3D printing device, in a step E2) and preferably also the tool blank are cleaned, and the tool blank is then reinserted in the 3D printing device in a precisely positioned manner, so that it is arranged there true to its position after completion of step E).
- the positional accuracy can advantageously be achieved, for example, in that the tool blank is generated in step E) on a construction platform positioned on the movable worktop via alignment pins, the tool blank with the construction platform is removed from the 3D printing device in step E2) and the construction platform with the Tool blank is inserted again in the exact position on the movable worktop via the alignment pins after the aforementioned cleaning.
- a build-up material in particular a powdery build-up material, is advantageously applied in layers and selectively solidified by applying a laser.
- the selective solidification in step E) and the laser reflow polishing in step G) are advantageously carried out with the same laser system.
- step B a data record describing the high-resolution, multi-level watermark relief is generated with particular advantage, and with this data record both the layered structure of the tool blank in step E), and also the polishing, in particular the gradual smoothing of the watermark relief in step G) in controlled by the 3D printing device.
- the laser exposure in step G) can be controlled in such a way that only those surface areas of the watermark relief are smoothed on which no further layer was built up in step E).
- step B) the predetermined injection molding relief is inverted in order to determine the high-resolution, multi-level watermark relief and that preferably vertical structures in the predetermined injection molding relief are also replaced by slightly inclined structures in the watermark relief.
- Slightly inclined structures are structures with an inclination angle between 0.5 ° and 4 °, preferably between 1.5 ° and 3 °, with respect to the vertical.
- the high-resolution multi-level watermark relief of the watermark tool has elevations and depressions with sharp edges with an edge width between 0.3 mm and 0.8 mm, preferably between 0.4 mm and 0.6 mm.
- the edge width is the width within which the height of an elevation drops from 90% of the maximum height to 10%, or within which the depth of a depression increases from 90% of the maximum depth to 10%.
- the high-resolution, multi-level watermark relief of the watermark tool has an average spatial frequency of 0.8 Lp / mm to 3 Lp / mm.
- the spatial frequency represents a measure for quantifying the image sharpness. It indicates the maximum number of black / white line pairs that can be resolved per unit of length and is usually specified in the unit Lp / mm (line pairs per millimeter).
- a high image sharpness corresponds to a high spatial frequency
- a low image sharpness corresponds to a low spatial frequency.
- the term "mean spatial frequency" takes into account the fact that the spatial frequency does not have to be constant in the entire area of the watermark relief.
- step W) the polished tool blank is further processed into a watermark tool in such a way that the watermark relief smoothed in step G) forms the high-resolution, multi-level watermark relief of the injection molding cavity of the watermark tool.
- the polished tool blank can for example be inserted into the relief tool of an injection molding tool as a relief insert having the relief structure of the injection molding cavity.
- the polished tool blank can also form the entire relief tool of an injection molding tool, the relief tool also being combined with an associated nozzle tool to complete the injection molding tool.
- the polished tool blank can also essentially represent the complete injection molding tool.
- the irradiation device is preferably a laser device.
- the tool blank can in principle also be smoothed by electropolishing, plasma electrolytic polishing, dry electropolishing or by blasting with abrasive media.
- Electropolishing is an electrochemical removal process with an external power source, in which metal is removed anodically in a material-specific electrolyte.
- the machining removes a thin layer of material from the surface of the tool blank through anodic dissolution without mechanical or thermal stress. Electropolishing works in the micro range without changing shapes and macrostructures.
- the electrolytic plasma polishing process is a recent development in the field of surface technology.
- the plasma polishing process uses aqueous salt solutions as the electrolyte, which are considered ecologically harmless, so that no special cleaning systems are necessary.
- the anodically polarized metallic material blank is placed in the electrolytic bath of an aqueous salt solution, in particular an aqueous ammonium sulfate solution. After immersion of the workpiece, discharge processes at the anode lead to the development of plasma. The actual electrolysis processes, which lead to material removal and smoothing of the surface of the tool blank, take place in the resulting gas zone.
- dry electropolishing processes that use a powdered electrolyte to transport ions are also possible.
- the contours of the workpiece are retained in the dry electropolishing process, targeted material removal is generated on the surface and the surface texture of the workpiece is also retained.
- the tool blank can also be smoothed by blasting with abrasive media. Small particles, for example made of glass, corundum or plastic, are thrown at high pressure onto the tool blank, thereby leveling roughness peaks and smoothing the surface.
- FIG. 1 shows schematically a dewatering screen 10 with a screen fabric 12 into which a watermark insert is injected in the region of a recess 14.
- the watermark insert 20 has a high-resolution, multi-stage injection-molded relief 22, which allows a very detailed representation of graphic motifs, for example a portrait.
- the watermark insert 20 is provided with a plurality of small perforations 24 in order to ensure drainage also in the area of the watermark insert 20 during papermaking.
- FIG. 2 shows an injection molding tool 30 according to the invention for injecting the watermark insert 20 into the drainage screen 10 of FIG Fig. 1 .
- the injection molding tool 30 contains a nozzle tool 32, which serves as an injection molding tool upper part, and a relief tool 50, which serves as an injection molding tool lower part.
- the nozzle tool 32 is in the form of a flat plate with a top and a bottom.
- a nozzle tool cavity 36 is formed on its underside in the nozzle tool 32, which is connected to a nozzle opening arranged on the top of the nozzle tool 32 for injecting plastic into the nozzle tool cavity 36.
- the relief tool 50 is also designed in the form of a flat plate with an upper and a lower side, a 3D-printed relief insert 40 being inserted into the relief tool 50 on the upper side, which is provided on its upper side with a high-resolution, multi-level watermark relief 54 in the form of the inverted injection molding relief 22 is provided.
- the injection molding tool 30 with the nozzle tool 32 and relief tool 50 is moved to the recessed areas of the drainage screen 10 so that the nozzle tool 32 is arranged above and the relief tool 50 with the relief insert 40 congruently below the recess 14 . Then the two tools 32, 50 are brought together in the vertical direction, so that they accommodate the drainage screen 10 between them in the region of the recess 14 with a predetermined pressure.
- the injection molding tool 30 forms an injection molding cavity 56 which comprises the nozzle tool cavity 36 and the recess 14 of the drainage sieve 10 and which is delimited on its underside by the watermark relief 54 of the relief insert 40 of the relief tool 50.
- a watermark insert 20 with the desired injection molding relief 22 which is injected directly into the dewatering screen 10 is created.
- the dewatering screen 10 contains a watermark insert 20 with the high-resolution relief 22, as in FIG Fig. 1 shown.
- the relief insert 40 of the relief tool 50 comprises a base plate with the high-resolution multistage watermark relief 54, the relief insert 40 including base plate and relief 54 is formed by an additive manufacturing process as a layer sequence of a plurality of material layers 42 firmly connected to one another.
- this 3D-printed relief insert 40 is inserted into a relief tool 50 produced in a conventional manner.
- the present invention provides an effective and highly precise manufacturing method for producing the essential part 40 of the injection molding tool that contains the watermark relief 54.
- the procedure is below with reference to FIG Figure 3 explained in detail, which shows in (a) to (h) various intermediate steps in an exemplary production of the relief insert 40.
- a 3D printing device 60 shown in detail, contains a movable work plate 62 which can be moved vertically in a processing space 64.
- the relief insert 40 is built up on a building platform 66 which is detachably connected to the worktop 62 via a plurality of dowel pins 68.
- the dowel pins 68 and corresponding recesses in the building platform 66 ensure that the building platform can be removed from the 3D printing device and then reinserted into the 3D printing device with accurate positioning.
- a relief insert blank 84 it is produced in the 3D printing device 60 by selective laser beam melting (LBM, laser beam melting), that is to say by applying a build-up material in layers and selectively solidifying it.
- LBM laser beam melting
- an associated high-resolution, multi-level watermark relief 54 is determined that the desired injection molding relief is generated when the plastic is later injected into the injection molding cavity 56.
- This determination is preferably computer-aided and includes an inversion of the predetermined injection molding relief 22.
- further processing steps can be provided which take into account the particularities of the production method according to the invention. For example, for the laser polishing step described below, it can be advantageous if the watermark relief 54 does not have completely perpendicular structures.
- any vertical structures in the injection molding relief 22 in the watermark relief 54 are therefore replaced by slightly inclined structures.
- angles of inclination ⁇ between 0.5 ° and 4 °, preferably between 1.5 ° and 3 °, in particular of approximately 2.5 ° from the vertical have proven to be advantageous.
- all structures of the injection molded relief 22 with a slope angle between 90 ° and 90 ° - ⁇ in the watermark relief 54 are replaced by slightly inclined structures with a slope angle of 90 ° - ⁇ .
- the 3D data of the watermark relief 54 determined in this way form a data record which is transmitted as a construction file to a computer unit, which controls the 3D printing device 60 accordingly on the basis of this data.
- the graph in Fig. 3 is highly schematic to illustrate the principle of the invention.
- the granulate or powder particles of the build-up material usually have different sizes in practice, in the exemplary embodiment a maximum size of approximately 63 ⁇ m.
- solidified powder layers become a Layer thickness of about 20 ⁇ m is produced.
- the relief insert blank is built up not only from a few but from a large number of separately applied and solidified layers, so that a high resolution and detail of the watermark relief 54 can be achieved.
- a first granulate or powder layer 70 of the building material is first applied to the building platform 66.
- the build-up material is fused to one another in the region 72 of the desired dimensions of the blank by exposure to a laser 74 and thereby selectively solidified.
- the selectively solidified material layer 76 has a relatively large surface waviness 78. The size of the waviness of the material layer 76 depends on the details of the building process and is, for example, just under 10 ⁇ m.
- the worktop 62 is gradually lowered and further granulate or powder layers are applied and solidified in order to complete the base plate 80 of the watermark insert 20, as in FIG Fig. 3 (c) shown.
- the waviness of the first layer 76 was leveled by the layers subsequently applied over the entire surface, while the top layer 82 of the base plate 80 has a relatively large surface waviness 78 due to the manufacturing process.
- the worktop 62 is then lowered further and the relief with the 3D data supplied by the computer unit is gradually built up in the desired form on the base plate 80 until finally the complete relief insert blank 84 is built, as in FIG Fig. 3 (d) shown.
- the watermark relief 54 of the blank is generally much more complex in practice than the schematic representation of FIG Fig. 3 (d) reveals.
- the watermark relief can also contain binary relief areas with large differences in height which reproduce electrotypes. Because of their great contrast, such binary areas are particularly well suited for generating character strings and in particular numerical values, for example the denomination of a bank note in the watermark.
- the surface of the relief insert blank 84 is typically covered with non-fused build-up material 86 after its completion.
- the top layer of each step also has the already mentioned, relatively large surface waviness 78.
- the step height does not have to coincide with the layer height, since steps can also be formed by a sequence of several layers.
- the steps of the watermark relief 54 have a minimum step height of 20 ⁇ m, so that very fine gradations of brightness are possible in the watermark.
- the blank 84 is removed from the 3D printing device 60 and the processing space 64 of the 3D printing device and the blank 84 are cleaned.
- the cleaned relief insert blank 84 is then reinserted into the cleaned 3D printing device 60, as in FIG Fig. 3 (e) shown.
- the accurate position insertion of the relief insert blank 84 is possible with the alignment pins 68 practically without position tolerances.
- the worktop 62 with the blank is then moved into a position in which the surface of the first layer to be smoothed lies in the processing plane 90, for example the focal plane of the processing laser ( Fig. 3 (e) ).
- the first layer to be smoothed represents the top layer 82 of the base plate 80 of the blank 84.
- the exposed surface areas 92 of the layer 82 are now to be smoothed, that is to say those surface areas 92 on which no further layer has been built up.
- the required information about the shape and position of these surface areas 92 is available in the data record stored in the computer unit.
- only the exposed surface regions 92 of the first layer 82 can therefore be exposed to the focused laser radiation 94 in a targeted manner and can be remelt-polished in the process.
- no material is removed, but the wavy surface 78 is melted together with any adhering particles by the incident laser energy and these irregularities are integrated into the surface of the layer 82.
- the surface tension of the layer is also reduced in that layer areas close to the edge are completely melted.
- Figure 3 (f) shows schematically the state of the blank 84 after remelt polishing of the first layer 82 with surface regions 92 that have now been smoothed.
- FIG. 3 (g) shows schematically the state of the blank 84 after remelt polishing of the first and second layers with now smoothed surface areas 92, 96.
- the processing plane 90 used for remelt polishing does not necessarily have to be the focal plane of the laser radiation. In some configurations, it may also be advisable to carry out the remelt polishing somewhat outside the focal plane. The layers to be smoothed are then each moved into this processing plane 90, which is somewhat outside the focal plane.
- the processing laser used for remelt polishing is advantageously the same as that used for the selective solidification of the material layers when building up the blank, so that no additional laser source is required.
- a data transfer or an adaptation of position data is also not required for remelt polishing, since the laser polishing step is carried out accurately in position in the assembly device, so that the 3D data set already available there can be used to control the polishing step.
- Figure 4 shows schematically a device 100 for producing a watermarking tool of the type described.
- the device 100 contains a 3D printing device 60 with a movable worktop 62 and a processing laser 102.
- the same processing laser 102 is used both for melting the building material when building up and solidifying the layer by layer Used as well as for remelt polishing of the surface unevenness of the built-up blank.
- the device 100 contains a computing unit 104.
- the construction file 106 is used twice, namely first for the layer-wise additive build-up of the tool blank and then for the step-by-step remelt polishing of the tool blank to smooth the surface defects caused by the production.

The invention relates generally to the field of making watermark paper, and more particularly to a method and apparatus for making a watermark tool for making watermark inserts.
Security papers for banknotes, identity documents and the like are often provided with watermarks during paper production, which allow the authenticity of the security paper to be checked and which at the same time serve as protection against unauthorized reproduction. For the production of watermark paper it has long been known to bring bronze screen mesh with brass embossing stamps in relief in order to obtain different layer thicknesses of the fibers during paper production. In the finished paper, these lead to a structured halftone image in transparency, the so-called watermark. In order to be able to generate watermarks with higher accuracy and spatial resolution, it is also known to use injection molding technology with subsequent laser perforation of the injection molded parts for dewatering in order to produce watermark inserts with a highly accurate injection molding relief. The watermark inserts can be welded or glued to a carrier screen or injected directly into the carrier screen.
So far, however, the potentially superior properties of injection molding tools produced by additive manufacturing processes (hereinafter also often referred to as 3D printing for short) have not yet been brought to bear in production. There, 3D-printed injection molding tools cannot currently be used, primarily because of their relatively rough surface, since the injection molded parts produced are difficult to demold, which leads to bubbles in the dewatering screen. If the surface of the 3D-printed tools is post-treated, this requires an additional process step that requires an additional processing station. This not only raises the problem of the exact positioning of the tool for post-processing, but also the problem of transferring the 3D data of the high-resolution surface relief to the post-processing station.
Proceeding from this, the invention is based on the object of overcoming the disadvantages of the prior art and, in particular, of specifying an effective method for producing a watermarking tool suitable for production.
This object is achieved by the features of the independent claims. Further developments of the invention are the subject of the subclaims.

In the context of this description, a watermark tool is a tool for the production of a watermark set, the watermark tool forming an injection-molded cavity into which plastic can be injected in order to generate the watermark set. The watermark tool can be designed, for example, in the form of an injection molding tool for the production of a watermark set, which is subsequently used with is connected to a drainage screen. The watermark tool can, for example, also represent an injection molding tool with an upper tool part and a lower tool part, the two tool parts receiving a drainage screen provided with a recess between them and forming an injection molding cavity in the area of the recess, so that a watermark insert can be inserted directly into the recess of the drainage screen can be injected.
In an advantageous embodiment of the method, the tool blank produced is smoothed step-by-step in step G) in accordance with the steps of the watermark relief determined in step B). The height of the steps can correspond to the layer thickness of the layers produced in step E), but the step height can also be a multiple of this layer thickness. In each stage, only those surface areas of the watermark relief are advantageously smoothed on which no further layer was built up in step E). The steps of the watermark relief are preferably smoothed sequentially from bottom to top or from top to bottom so that each height step is completely smoothed before the next higher or next lower step is processed. The position and extent of the steps and the shape and position of the surface areas to be smoothed in each step are advantageously taken from a data record generated in step B) for describing the high-resolution, multi-step watermark relief.
The tool blank produced is advantageously smoothed in step G) by laser reflow polishing. With laser reflow polishing, no material is removed, but the surface to be smoothed is melted by the incident laser energy together with any particles adhering to the surface, and thereby the unevenness in the surface integrated and this smoothed. In addition, the surface tension in the smoothed layers can also be reduced by melting on layer areas close to the edge.
In an advantageous method, the tool blank produced is smoothed in step G) in two or more polishing steps that are carried out with different laser parameters. A polishing step with continuous wave laser radiation not only eliminates local surface defects due to the continuously existing melt pool, but also effectively reduces surface waviness of the layer to be smoothed. A polishing step with pulsed laser radiation enables a particularly precise regulation of the heat flow into the layer surface through the choice of the pulse length and the repetition rate. It is therefore provided in an advantageous embodiment that a polishing step, in particular a first polishing step, is carried out with continuous wave laser radiation and a further polishing step, in particular a subsequent polishing step, is carried out with pulsed laser radiation. In order to smooth the surface particularly gently, several polishing steps can be carried out with a relatively low input of energy, in which only one area of the layer to be smoothed close to the surface is melted.
The tool blank is produced on a movable worktop in step E), and the tool blank generated is moved to different heights on the movable worktop in step G) for smoothing the various stages of the watermark relief.
Between steps E) and G), the tool blank is advantageously removed from the 3D printing device, the 3D printing device, in a step E2) and preferably also the tool blank are cleaned, and the tool blank is then reinserted in the 3D printing device in a precisely positioned manner, so that it is arranged there true to its position after completion of step E).
The positional accuracy can advantageously be achieved, for example, in that the tool blank is generated in step E) on a construction platform positioned on the movable worktop via alignment pins, the tool blank with the construction platform is removed from the 3D printing device in step E2) and the construction platform with the Tool blank is inserted again in the exact position on the movable worktop via the alignment pins after the aforementioned cleaning.
To build up the tool blank in step E), a build-up material, in particular a powdery build-up material, is advantageously applied in layers and selectively solidified by applying a laser. The selective solidification in step E) and the laser reflow polishing in step G) are advantageously carried out with the same laser system.
In step B), a data record describing the high-resolution, multi-level watermark relief is generated with particular advantage, and with this data record both the layered structure of the tool blank in step E), and also the polishing, in particular the gradual smoothing of the watermark relief in step G) in controlled by the 3D printing device. In particular, on the basis of this data set, the laser exposure in step G) can be controlled in such a way that only those surface areas of the watermark relief are smoothed on which no further layer was built up in step E).
It is also advantageously provided that in step B) the predetermined injection molding relief is inverted in order to determine the high-resolution, multi-level watermark relief and that preferably vertical structures in the predetermined injection molding relief are also replaced by slightly inclined structures in the watermark relief. Slightly inclined structures are structures with an inclination angle between 0.5 ° and 4 °, preferably between 1.5 ° and 3 °, with respect to the vertical. These measures facilitate laser reflow polishing even with almost vertically sloping steps in the watermark relief.
In an advantageous embodiment, the high-resolution multi-level watermark relief of the watermark tool has elevations and depressions with sharp edges with an edge width between 0.3 mm and 0.8 mm, preferably between 0.4 mm and 0.6 mm. The edge width is the width within which the height of an elevation drops from 90% of the maximum height to 10%, or within which the depth of a depression increases from 90% of the maximum depth to 10%.
Alternatively or additionally, it is provided in an advantageous embodiment that the high-resolution, multi-level watermark relief of the watermark tool has an average spatial frequency of 0.8 Lp / mm to 3 Lp / mm. The spatial frequency represents a measure for quantifying the image sharpness. It indicates the maximum number of black / white line pairs that can be resolved per unit of length and is usually specified in the unit Lp / mm (line pairs per millimeter). A high image sharpness corresponds to a high spatial frequency, and a low image sharpness corresponds to a low spatial frequency. The term "mean spatial frequency" takes into account the fact that the spatial frequency does not have to be constant in the entire area of the watermark relief.
In step W), the polished tool blank is further processed into a watermark tool in such a way that the watermark relief smoothed in step G) forms the high-resolution, multi-level watermark relief of the injection molding cavity of the watermark tool. The polished tool blank can for example be inserted into the relief tool of an injection molding tool as a relief insert having the relief structure of the injection molding cavity. The polished tool blank can also form the entire relief tool of an injection molding tool, the relief tool also being combined with an associated nozzle tool to complete the injection molding tool. Finally, with an appropriate design, the polished tool blank can also essentially represent the complete injection molding tool.

- a height-adjustable worktop and a base plate that is detachably but accurately positioned with the height-adjustable worktop, on which a tool blank with a high-resolution, multi-level watermark relief is built up by applying a build-up material in layers and selectively solidifying it,
- an irradiation device for selective irradiation of the building material,
- a control device that is designed to

The irradiation device is preferably a laser device.
Instead of the preferred polishing by means of laser application, the tool blank can in principle also be smoothed by electropolishing, plasma electrolytic polishing, dry electropolishing or by blasting with abrasive media.
Electropolishing is an electrochemical removal process with an external power source, in which metal is removed anodically in a material-specific electrolyte. The machining removes a thin layer of material from the surface of the tool blank through anodic dissolution without mechanical or thermal stress. Electropolishing works in the micro range without changing shapes and macrostructures.
The electrolytic plasma polishing process is a recent development in the field of surface technology. In contrast to electrochemical polishing, the plasma polishing process uses aqueous salt solutions as the electrolyte, which are considered ecologically harmless, so that no special cleaning systems are necessary. The anodically polarized metallic material blank is placed in the electrolytic bath of an aqueous salt solution, in particular an aqueous ammonium sulfate solution. After immersion of the workpiece, discharge processes at the anode lead to the development of plasma. The actual electrolysis processes, which lead to material removal and smoothing of the surface of the tool blank, take place in the resulting gas zone.
In addition to these wet chemical electropolishing processes that use a liquid as the electrolyte, dry electropolishing processes that use a powdered electrolyte to transport ions are also possible. The contours of the workpiece are retained in the dry electropolishing process, targeted material removal is generated on the surface and the surface texture of the workpiece is also retained.
Finally, the tool blank can also be smoothed by blasting with abrasive media. Small particles, for example made of glass, corundum or plastic, are thrown at high pressure onto the tool blank, thereby leveling roughness peaks and smoothing the surface.

After the
To produce a relief insert blank 84, it is produced in the
For this purpose, on the basis of the specified
Any vertical structures in the

The
The processing laser used for remelt polishing is advantageously the same as that used for the selective solidification of the material layers when building up the blank, so that no additional laser source is required. A data transfer or an adaptation of position data is also not required for remelt polishing, since the laser polishing step is carried out accurately in position in the assembly device, so that the 3D data set already available there can be used to control the polishing step.
To control the
