Definitions

  • the invention relates to a bearing housing.
  • Such machinery may be involved in processing, raw material half finished products or end products. When brought into contact with the bearings used in such machinery, contaminant may arise within the interior of the machinery.
  • bearings can be arranged in a bearing housing at the exterior of such machinery and using seals to protect the bearing ingress of the materials inside the machinery to enter the bearing.
  • the bearings may further be protected using caps which cover the bearing housing to protect from ingress of contaminants from the outside environment of the machinery.
  • caps may be applied over the bearing housing for protecting against ingress of contaminants from the environment.
  • Such caps may be using a snap-fit connection to attach the cap to the bearing housing.
  • Such a snap-fit connection however may not be leak tight and may still sustain ingress of contaminants.
  • Bearings usually require inspection or service and maintenance on a periodical or ad hoc basis.
  • Snap-on or snap-fit caps however may require tools to remove for service of the bearing in the housing which in the food and medical and pharmaceutical processing industry is undesirable, as such tools may damage the contacting surfaces of the cap and bearing housing.
  • regulations within the food industry prohibit use of tools.
  • Bayonet couplings of caps and bearing housing in the art as for example disclosed in international patent application WO2016/156962A1 i.e. baseplate of the bearing housing are prone to contamination, as the required teeth and grooves can accumulate contaminants. Unscrewing and screwing a cup from a bearing housing with such coupling may cause contamination of inner parts of the bearing housing.
  • Additional measures such as a skirt or sealing lip may be required to prevent contamination while performing maintenance.
  • a bearing housing which overcomes the problems and disadvantages as outlined above.
  • the object is achieved in a bearing housing, comprising a baseplate, the baseplate having a rim, wherein the rim has an inner annular cavity for holding a bearing, and wherein the rim is provided with first screw thread at its outer
  • the bearing housing can be attached to a housing of an apparatus or system by means of the base plate, the housing wherein processes can be performed which require optimal separation with the environment outside the housing, whilst a bearing is to be housed and held which provides support for an axle and a rotation or pivoting function.
  • a bearing is to be housed and held which provides support for an axle and a rotation or pivoting function.
  • the screw thread of the caps covers the screw thread of the bearing housing rim, hygienic operation of the system and processes within the housing is allowed, while preventing ingress of contaminants from the environment, and while simultaneously preventing fluids involved in such system and process to leak from the housing.
  • the bearing within the housing is maintained contaminants free, thus ensuring its proper function and longevity. Having the screw thread fitting of the cap onto the bearing housing rim, inspection of the bearing is possible by unscrewing the cap by manual action without a need for tools.
  • the screw threads of the bearing housing according to the invention allow the cap to be screwed firmly on the rim providing a leak tight connection whilst simultaneously allowing easy access for maintenance, i.e. placing and/or replacing the bearing, without a need for further protective measures such as skirts of sealing lips..
  • the bearing housing further comprises a first seal ring accommodated within the baseplate opening, wherein the first seal ring is arranged against an edge within the opening of the baseplate.
  • the first seal ring protects the bearing from ingress of fluid and contaminants from the housing of the machinery to which the bearing housing is mounted.
  • the bearing housing further comprises a second seal ring accommodated between an inner edge of the cap, wherein the second seal ring is arranged against a top edge of the rim. This further protects the bearing from ingress of fluids and contaminants from the environment outside of the cap and rim of the bearing housing.
  • the bearing housing further comprises mounting holes, for mounting the bearing housing on an object wall using bolts and nuts. These bolts and nuts provide a firm mount to a housing to which the bearing housing is to be mounted.
  • the bearing housing further comprises washers for mounting between the bolt and baseplate and between the nuts and object's inner wall, wherein the washers comprise a sealing edge.
  • the sealing edges of the washers protect from ingress of contaminants and fluids to the holes by which the base plate is mounted to the housing to which the bearing housing is to be mounted
  • the baseplate comprises a groove and a seal accommodated within the groove.
  • the seal protects from ingress of contaminants and fluids contact surface of the base plate and housing to which the bearing housing is mounted.
  • the cap is provided with at least one rib at the cap's outer circumference.
  • Fig. 1 shows an exploded view of a bearing housing according to an embodiment of the invention.
  • Fig. 2 shows a cross section of the bearing housing according to an embodiment of the invention.
  • Fig. 3 shows an isometric view of the bearing housing according to an embodiment of the invention.
  • the base plate 101 has mounting holes for mounting to a system housing wherein processes can be performed which are to be kept sealed off from the environment outside of the system housing and from the interior of the bearing housing 100.
  • the base plate 101 is provided with a rim 1 12 which has a screw thread 1 1 1 a at its outer circumference for mounting the cap 107 to the rim 1 12.
  • a seal ring 108 can be arranged between the upper edge of the rim 1 12 and the interior of the cap 107 for completing the sealing off the interior of the bearing housing 100 and the environment.
  • a bearing 102 can be arranged within the rim 1 12, clamped close-fittingly by the inner wall 1 14 of the rim 1 12.
  • another seal ring 109 can be arranged which seals off the bearing 102 when mounted within the rim 1 12 from fluids or contaminants from within the system housing to which the bearing housing 100 is mounted.
  • the base plate 101 is furthermore sealed off from the environment outside the housing 100 to which the bearing housing 100 is mounted and vice versa using a seal 106, which can be embedded in a circumferential groove 1 13 near the edge of the baseplate 101 at the side facing the housing or part of the machinery to which the bearing housing 100 is to be mounted.
  • the base plate 101 can be mounted to the housing to which the bearing housing is to be mounted using bolts 104 with corresponding washers 103, 1 10 and nuts 105 arranged through the mounting holes 1 15 of the base plate 101 .
  • the bearing housing 100 including baseplate 101 , rim 1 12, cap 107 and seals can be manufactured from solid materials such as plastics including nylon, PLA, PEEK, etc. or metal such as stainless steel, or combinations of plastics and metal, depending on applied fluids in the environment or from within the housing to which the bearing housing 100 is mounted.
  • all parts of the bearing housing 100 including the baseplate, rim and cap, and seals and seal rings are manufactured from materials allowed within the food and medical or pharmaceutical processing industry (FDA materials).
  • the seals 106, and seal rings 108, 109 can be manufactured from durable elastic materials such as rubber, silicone and like materials depending on fluids applied.
  • the seal ring 108 is shown arranged between edge 203 of the rim 1 12 and an inner edge 202 of the cap 107.
  • the cap 107 is screwed on the rim 1 12 using screw thread 1 1 1 b corresponding to the screw thread 1 1 1 a of the rim 1 12.
  • the seal ring 109 is arranged against the bearing 102 and inner edge 201 of the bearing housing 100.
  • the seal ring 109 can be kept in position by another seal ring 205 (not shown in fig. 1 ), arranged within the baseplate opening 1 16.
  • the seal ring 205 can be manufactured from similar materials as the other seals 106, 108, 109, but also from solid materials.
  • the seal 106 is shown arranged in groove 1 13.
