Theinner wall portion 49 is complementary in shape to theinner wall 42 of thehousing 12 such that theinner wall portion 49 rests against theinner wall 42 when thefilter holder 36 is in the retracted position. Theouter wall portion 48 of thefilter holder 36 follows the shape of theupper wall portion 16 andside wall portion 18 of thehousing 12 such that theouter wall portion 48 of thefilter holder 36 forms portions of theupper wall portion 16 andside wall portion 18 adjacent thefirst end 26 of thehousing 12. - In the embodiment shown, the
filter holder 36 is slidable between the retracted and extended positions. Thefilter holder 36 includes aprojection 50 extending inwardly through aslot 64 in thefirst wall portion 44 of theinner wall 42 such that thefilter holder 36 can slide inwardly or outwardly relative to thefirst wall portion 44. Theinner wall portion 49 of thefilter holder 36 includes anaperture 54 into which is received thefilter receptacle 38. Theaperture 54 is provided on theinner wall portion 49 such that theaperture 54 is adjacent thesecond wall portion 45 of theinner wall 42 when thefilter holder 36 is in the retracted position. - The
filter receptacle 38 comprises aflexible bag 82 having an openfirst end 52 and a closedsecond end 53. Theflexible bag 82 includes aring 56 around the openfirst end 52 thereof. Thering 56 is received into a complementary shaped recess provided around the periphery of theaperture 54. Thefilter receptacle 38 can be received within thefilter holder 36 by passing the closedsecond end 53 of thefilter receptacle 38 in through theaperture 54 when thefilter holder 36 is in the extended position. When thefilter receptacle 38 is to be replaced, thefilter holder 36 is moved to the extended position and thefilter receptacle 38 may fall downwardly away from thefilter holder 36. - The
housing 12 includes a firstinternal cavity 58 defined adjacent thefirst end 26 of thehousing 12. The firstinternal cavity 58 is defined in part by aninterior wall 60 such that theopening 30 is in communication with the firstinternal cavity 58. Ahole 62 is provided in thesecond wall portion 45 of theinner wall 42 such that air drawn inwardly through theopening 30 into the firstinternal cavity 58 may pass through thehole 62 into thefilter receptacle 38 provided within thechamber 46 of thefilter holder 36. - The
projection 50 extending away from theinner wall portion 49 of thefilter holder 36 is tubular and in communication with thechamber 46 of thefilter holder 36 such that air drawn into thechamber 46 exits outwardly through thetubular projection 50. The air passing outwardly through thetubular projection 50 passes into a secondinternal cavity 59 within thehousing 12. The secondinternal cavity 59 is defined in part by aduct 66. Theduct 66 has a tubular first end which receives thetubular projection 50. - The
duct 66 includes a second end which receives a fan unit. The fan unit includes animpeller 68 driven by amotor 70 mounted within a secondinternal cavity 59 such that rotation of theimpeller 68 draws air inwardly throughtubular projection 50 from within thechamber 46 of thefilter holder 36. The second end of theduct 66 defines in part the secondinternal cavity 59 into which air is drawn through thetubular projection 50 by theimpeller 68. - The second
internal cavity 59 of thehousing 12 includes also one ormore outlets 72 such that air drawn inwardly from thechamber 46 may exit the secondinternal cavity 59 via theoutlets 72. In the embodiment shown, theoutlets 72 comprise a plurality ofslots 73 provided around the junction between thelower wall portion 14 and theside wall portion 18 at thesecond end 27 of thehousing 12. - The
motor 70 is powered by abattery 74 contained within thehousing 12. In the embodiment shown, thebattery 74 is located within the firstinternal cavity 58 adjacent theinterior wall 60. - The
filter receptacle 38 includes acover 76 as can be seen inFigure 20 . Thecover 76 comprises a planar member pivotally mounted to thering 56. Thecover 76 is pivotable between a closed position (as can be seen inFigure 20 ) in which thecover 76 seals across thering 56 and an open position (as can be seen inFigure 21 ) in which thecover 76 pivots inwardly into thefilter receptacle 38. - In the embodiment shown, the
ring 56 is generally rectangular in shape, as is thecover 76. Thecover 76 is pivotally connected along a longitudinal side thereof to a longitudinal side of thering 56. - The
cover 76 includes anouter lug 78 thereon. Theouter lug 78 extends outwardly from the plane of thering 56 when thecover 76 is in the closed position. In the embodiment shown, theouter lug 78 comprises a triangular shaped fin. Theouter lug 78 is arranged such that when thefilter receptacle 38 is received within thefilter holder 36 and thefilter holder 36 is moved to the retracted position, theouter lug 78 engages with theinner wall 42 around to thehole 62 to move thecover 76 to the open position. Thecover 76 is biased to move towards the closed position, such that when thefilter holder 36 is moved to the extended position, thecover 76 moves to the closed position to seal off thefilter receptacle 38. - The
cover 76 includes also one or moreinternal lugs 80 on an inner side thereof. The internal lugs 80 comprises also triangular shaped fins in the embodiment shown. Theinternal lugs 80 are provided to engage with an inner surface of thebag 82 to hold thebag 82 in an open position when in use. - When required for use, the
comb unit 20 may be moved to the extended position. In the extended position, thebase 28 engages against the inner surface of theelongate lip 32 such that air will be drawn between the base 28 and the second side of theopening 30. Thehousing 12 is held in the hand and is drawn towards the operator such that theteeth 24 pass through the hair. Lice and eggs captured between theteeth 24 will be caught on a side of theblade 22 adjacent theopening 30 and therefore will be drawn in through theopening 30 and through thehole 62 into thefilter receptacle 38 where they will be captured. - When use has been completed, the
comb unit 20 may be moved to the retracted position such that the base 28 seals across theopening 30, thereby preventing escape of any lice. Thefilter receptacle 38 may be replaced by moving thefilter holder 36 to the extended position. Thefilter receptacle 38 may simply fall downwardly from thefilter holder 36 into a bin. Thecover 76 of thefilter receptacle 38 moves to the closed position as thefilter holder 36 is extended to capture lice within thefilter receptacle 38 for disposal. - It will be readily apparent to persons skilled in the relevant arts that various modifications and improvements may be made to the foregoing embodiments, in addition to those already described, without departing from the basic inventive concepts of the present invention, as defined in the appended claims.
