Abstract

Description
- The present invention relates to a novel container, which finds particular application as a container for elongate aerosol-generating articles, including conventional cigarettes. In particular, the container of the present invention finds application with aerosol-generating articles comprising a combustible heat source of the type disclosed in
WO 2009/022232 . - Like conventional smoking articles, aerosol-generating articles are commonly packaged in rigid hinge-lid containers comprising a box and a lid hinged to the box along a hinge line extending across a back wall of the container. The bundle of aerosol-generating articles housed in the box is commonly wrapped in an inner liner, or package, of metallised paper, metal foil or other flexible sheet material. Both hinge-lid container and inner package may be formed from blanks which are typically transported and supplied to packing machines stacked on top of each other and in a flat state.
- It is desirable to adapt containers to specific characteristics of the consumer goods that are meant to be held within the containers and generally improve the ease of use of the consumer goods. This is especially true in view of the development of consumer goods, such as new and innovative aerosol-generating articles, which may present new challenges.

discloses an aerosol-generating article comprising a combustible heat source, an aerosol-generating substrate downstream of the combustible heat source and a heat-conducting element around and in contact with a rear portion of the combustible heat source and an adjacent front portion of the aerosol-generating substrate. In one such article, the heat-conducting element transfers heat generated during combustion of the heat source to the aerosol-generating substrate via conduction. Volatile compounds released from the aerosol-generating substrate by heat transfer from the combustible heat source are entrained in air drawn through the heated aerosol-generating article. As the released compounds cool they condense to form an aerosol that is inhaled by the consumer.WO 2009/02232 - It would be desirable to provide an improved container for aerosol-generating articles particularly adapted to improve the ease of use of aerosol-generating articles comprising a combustible heat source. Further, it would be desirable to provide one such container that can be manufactured in straightforward and inexpensive fashion without requiring an extensive modification of existing apparatus and processes.
- According to an aspect of the present invention, there is provided a container for aerosol-generating articles, the container comprising: a box; a group of aerosol-generating articles within a first internal volume of the box; and a primary lid movable relative to the box between an open position, wherein a primary access opening of the container is revealed for extracting at least an aerosol-generating article from the first internal volume, and a closed position, wherein the primary lid occludes the primary access opening. The box comprises a reclosable extinguishment portion defining a second internal volume separate from the first internal volume, and an extinguishment substrate in the second internal volume. The reclosable extinguishment portion comprises a secondary access opening and a resealable adhesive label extending beyond the periphery of the secondary access opening and movable between a sealed position, wherein the resealable adhesive label occludes the secondary access opening, and an open position, wherein the resealable adhesive label is at least partly lifted off a surface of the container to reveal the secondary access opening.
- As used herein, the terms "front", "back", "upper", "lower", "top", "bottom" and "side", refer to the relative positions of portions of containers according to the invention and components thereof when the container is in an upright position and a primary access opening for extracting the aerosol-generating articles from the box is at the top of the container. When describing containers according to the present invention, these terms are used irrespective of the orientation of the container being described. The back wall of the container is the one comprising the hinge about which the primary lid pivots.
- The term "longitudinal" refers to a direction from bottom to top or vice versa. The term "transverse" refers to a direction perpendicular to the longitudinal direction.
- The term "width" is used to describe the dimension of an element, such as a panel of a blank or a wall of a container as measured in the transverse direction. The term "height" is used to describe the dimension of one such element as measured in a direction perpendicular to the width of the element. The term "depth" is used to describe the dimension of an element as measured in a direction perpendicular to both height and weight of the element. When describing a panel of the blank or a wall of the container, reference is generally made to the panel or wall in a flat state.
- The term "inner surface" is used throughout the specification to refer to the surface of a component of the assembled container that is facing towards the interior of the container, for example towards the aerosol-generating articles, when the container is in the closed position. The term "outer surface" is used throughout the specification to refer to the surface of a component of the container that is facing towards the exterior of the container. For example, the front wall of the container has an inner surface that is facing the inside of the container and the aerosol-generating articles, and an outer surface facing away from the aerosol-generating articles. It should be noted that the inside or outside surface is not necessarily equivalent to a certain side of a blank used in assembly of the container. Depending on how the blank is folded around the aerosol-generating articles, areas that are on the same side of the blank can either face towards the inside or the towards the outside of the container.
- The term "hinge line" refers to a line about which a lid may be pivoted in order to access a compartment of the container. A hinge line may be provided, for example, as a fold line or a score line in the panel forming a wall of the container.
- The term "extinguishment substrate" is used throughout the present specification to denote a material adapted to disperse or absorb heat and, as such, capable of rapidly lowering the temperature of an item put into contact with the material, such as the combustible heat source of an aerosol-generating article. For example, the extinguishment substrate may be in the form of a gel or hydrogel, as will be explained in greater detail below.
- As described briefly above, a container in accordance with the invention comprises a box portion within which there is received a group of aerosol-generating articles. The container also comprises a primary lid that is movable relative to the box between an open position, wherein a primary access opening of the container is revealed for extracting at least an aerosol-generating article from the first internal volume, and a closed position, wherein the primary lid occludes the primary access opening. In contrast to existing containers, the box comprises a reclosable extinguishment portion that defines a second internal volume which is distinct from the first internal volume, and an extinguishment substrate is provided in such second internal volume. The reclosable extinguishment portion has a dedicated opening, and comprises a resealable adhesive label extending beyond the periphery of the opening and movable between a sealed position and an open position. In the sealed position, the label occludes the opening of the extinguishment portion. In the open position, the label is at least partly lifted off a surface of the container to reveal the opening of the extinguishment portion.
- Thus, containers in accordance with the present invention advantageously provide the user with a means by which an aerosol-generating article can be easily extinguished. In particular, this is very effective with aerosol-generating articles comprising a combustible heat source. Without wishing to be bound by theory, this is understood to be because the combustible heat source can be effectively cooled down rapidly by transferring heat to the extinguishing substrate. Because the extinguishment substrate contains water, when the combustible heat source comes into contact with the extinguishment substrate, water is released and almost instantaneously evaporates, which rapidly lowers the temperature of the heat source.
- Containers in accordance with the present invention thus advantageously allow the consumer to extinguish such aerosol-generating articles with a gesture that is, to an extent, similar to the gesture by which a conventional filter cigarette can be stubbed out without the need for an ash-tray or the like. Because the user carries the extinguishing substrate in the same container holding the aerosol-generating articles, it is easy for the consumer to extinguish an article after use such that the extinguished article can safely be stored away or disposed of.
- In addition, containers and blanks in accordance with the present invention are easy to manufacture and do not require any extensive modification of the existing apparatus.
- In preferred embodiments, the container comprises a secondary lid movable relative to the box between an open position, wherein the secondary access opening is revealed to enable access to the second internal volume, and a closed position, wherein the secondary lid prevents access to the reclosable extinguishment portion. This is advantageous that access to the compartment holding the extinguishment substrate is kept separate from and independent of access to the compartment holding the aerosol-generating articles. Maintaining the two compartments functionally and structurally separate is advantageous because it helps minimise the risk that moisture be transferred from the second internal volume containing the extinguishment substrate be transferred to the first internal volume containing the aerosol-generating articles. When the extinguishment substrate is used to extinguish an aerosol-generating article, water may be released from the extinguishment substrate, and it is highly desirable that such water is not accidentally transferred to the first internal volume, since the aerosol-generating articles, particularly when they comprise a combustible heat source, may be sensitive to moisture.
- Preferably the reclosable extinguishment portion comprises a bag in the second internal volume for accommodating the extinguishment substrate, the bag being formed from a barrier film, the secondary access opening being formed in the bag and the resealable adhesive label being affixed to an outer surface of the bag. This is advantageous in that the bag is adapted to preserve the moisture content of the extinguishment substrate by preventing migration of oxygen and water vapour when the bag is properly sealed by the resealable adhesive label.
- Preferably the barrier film of the bag comprises metal foil or metallised paper. The barrier film may be formed as a laminate of a metallised polyethylene film and a liner material. In a particularly preferred embodiment, the barrier film is a laminate comprising a layer of aluminium sandwiched between two layers comprising oriented polypropylene. The aluminium layer provides desirable barrier properties to the resealable package and, as such, particularly helps maintain the required moisture content within the resealable package. In this respect, it has been found that one such three-layer laminate web material displays improved barrier properties compared with conventional metallised films. The barrier film may also be a supercalendered glassine paper. In addition, the barrier film may be provided with a print-receptive top coating.
- In some preferred embodiments, the extinguishing substrate comprises a super absorbent polymer loaded with water.
- The term "super absorbent polymer" (SAP) is generally used to denote a polymer capable of absorbing and retaining an extremely large amount of a liquid relative to the mass of the polymer. One such material is also at times referred to as a "slush powder". Water-absorbing polymers, which are classified as hydrogels when cross-linked, absorb aqueous solutions by forming hydrogen bonds with water molecules. Suitable SAPs for use in a container in accordance with the present invention comprise polyacrylates, such as sodium polyacrylate and potassium polyacrylate. Without wishing to be bound by theory, it is understood that the formation of hydrogen bonds between water molecules and the polymer molecules causes the polymer molecule to swell and stretch out, which allows a great amount of water to be absorbed.
- The ability of a SAP to absorb water varies depending on the ionic concentration of the aqueous solution. In deionized and distilled water, a SAP may absorb 300 times its weight (from 30 to 60 times its own volume) in water and can become up to 99.9% liquid. On the other hand, when put into a 0.9% saline solution, the absorbency of the SAP may drop to approximately 50 times its weight. This is understood to occur because the presence of valence cations in the solution prevents the polymer from forming bonds with the water molecules.
- In the context of the present invention, a "super absorbent polymer" is a polymer adapted to absorb and retain at least about 100 times its weight in deionized and distilled water.
- The total absorbency and swelling capacity of the SAP depend on the type of cross-linkers used to make the gel and on their degree of cross-linking. Low-density cross-linked SAPs generally have a higher absorbent capacity and swell to a larger degree. These types of SAPs also tend form softer and stickier gels. On the other hand, high cross-link density polymers exhibit lower absorbent capacity and swell, but the gel they form is firmer and particles can maintain their shape even under modest pressure.
- Because the SAP is loaded with water, when the combustible heat source of an aerosol-generating article comes into contact with the SAP, some water evaporates and the temperature of the heat source rapidly decreases. In practice, the SAP takes advantage of the heat capacity and latent heat of water molecules absorbed onto the polymer molecule to quickly lower the temperature of the combustible heat source.
- As an alternative, the SAP may be provided in the bag of the extinguishment portion in a substantially dry state, water having to be injected into the bag prior to using the aerosol-generating articles. In such case, the container is provided with information for the consumer to correctly introduce the right amount of water based on the content of SAP in the extinguishment portion. This may advantageously eliminate the risk of leakages until the consumer prepares the extinguishment substrate.
- In alternative embodiments, the extinguishing substrate comprises a heat absorbing gel. A suitable heat absorbing gel may be formed from two solutions, one comprising water and sodium bicarbonate and one comprising water and sodium silicate. In further alternative embodiments, the extinguishment substrate may comprise a heat absorbing paste adapted to act as a heat sink like Thermo-Trap by Nu-Calgon®.
- The extinguishment substrate is arranged within the second internal volume to form a bed. Preferably, a bed of the extinguishing substrate in the second internal volume has a height of at least about 5 millimetres. More preferably, a bed of the extinguishment substrate in the second internal volume has a height of at least about 9 millimetres. Even more preferably, a bed of the extinguishment substrate in the second internal volume has a height of at least about 12 millimetres. It has been found that with a bed of extinguishment substrate having a height in the range described above, it is particularly easy to extinguish a combustible heat source of an aerosol-generating article, since it is possibly for the extinguishment substrate to contact the greater part of the outer surface of the heat source when the heat source is inserted into the bed of extinguishment substrate.
- In addition, or as an alternative, a bed of the extinguishing substrate in the second internal volume preferably has a height of at less than about 25 millimetres. More preferably, a bed of the extinguishing substrate in the second internal volume has a height of at less than about 20 millimetres. Even more preferably, a bed of the extinguishing substrate in the second internal volume has a height of at less than about 15 millimetres.
- Preferably a portion of a bed of the extinguishing substrate in the second internal volume is exposed through the extinguishment opening, said exposed portion having a surface area of at least about 60 square millimetres. More preferably, said exposed portion has a surface area of at least about 250 square millimetres. Even more preferably, said exposed portion has a surface area of at least about 400 square millimetres. By ensuring that a portion of the bed of extinguishment substrate having a surface area in the ranges described above is exposed through the extinguishment opening, a container is provided wherein it is particularly easy for the consumer to extinguish an aerosol-generating article of the type comprising a combustible heat source without making the operation too complex for a consumer with limited dexterity. It is also made easier for the combustible heat source to be received into the bed of extinguishment substrate at an approximately central location within the bed when the consumer inserts it into the second internal volume. Without wishing to be bound by theory, this is expected to maximise the thermal capacity - mostly provided as latent heat - that is promptly available for rapidly decreasing the temperature of the combustible heat source. In addition, or as an alternative, the exposed surface of the bed has a surface area of less than about 500 square millimetres, more preferably less than 450 square millimetres.
- In preferred embodiments, the first internal volume and the second internal volume of the box are longitudinally aligned. In other words, the internal volume and the second internal volume are on top of one another. This means that, in practice, they are accessible from opposite ends of the container. Advantageously, this introduces a mode of use for the consumer wherein the two volumes are clearly structurally and functionally distinct from one another. In a particularly preferred embodiment, the primary access opening is provided at a top end of the box and the extinguishment opening is provided at a bottom end of the box.
- Preferably, the box comprises a third internal volume transversely adjacent and separate from, the first internal volume and the second internal volume, the third internal volume defining a recycling compartment adapted to received extinguished aerosol-generating articles. Thus, in containers wherein the first internal volume and the second internal volume of the box are longitudinally aligned, the third internal volume will extend substantially parallel to at least one of the first internal volume and second internal volume.
- In some embodiments, the recycling compartment may comprise a recycling compartment opening provided at a top end of the box. It may be convenient, from a manufacturing viewpoint, to place both recycling compartment opening and primary access opening at the same end of the box. This is because both recycling compartment and first internal volume need to have a height sufficient for receiving the aerosol-generating articles, and so they may be disposed essentially one next to each other. Accordingly, in such embodiments, the extinguishment compartment at the bottom of the container may have a width and depth substantially corresponding to the width and depth of the container.
- As an alternative, the recycling compartment may have a recycling compartment opening at a bottom end of the box. This may advantageously further increase the ease of use for the consumer, since a newly extinguished aerosol-generating article may directly be received in the adjacent recycling compartment without the need for the container to be turned around a transverse axis.
- In some embodiment, the container further comprises a reclosable cover flap extending beyond the periphery of recycling compartment opening and movable between a closed position, wherein the reclosable cover flap occludes the recycling compartment opening, and an open position, wherein the reclosable cover flap is at least partly lifted off a surface of the container to reveal the recycling compartment opening. This further simplifies the use of the recycling compartment for the consumer, whilst at the same time ensuring that the used and extinguished articles can be carried within a resealed volume. The reclosable cover flap may be manually moved between closed and open position by the consumer holding a free end portion of the reclosable cover flap, which may, for example, be provided as a resealable adhesive label with an adhesive free end portion.
- In preferred embodiments, the container further comprises a primary resealable adhesive label extending beyond the periphery of the primary access opening and movable between a sealed position, wherein the primary resealable adhesive label occludes the primary access opening, and an open position, wherein the primary resealable adhesive label is at least partly lifted off a surface of the container to reveal the primary access opening.
- Preferably, an end portion of the primary resealable adhesive label (for example, a front end portion of the primary resealable adhesive label) is permanently affixed to a surface of the primary lid such that, when the primary lid is moved from the closed position and the open position, the primary resealable adhesive label is moved from the sealed position to the open position.
- A container in accordance with the present invention may be formed by folding a blank for forming a container for consumer goods. The blank may be of any suitable material or combination of materials, including, but not limited to, cardboard, paperboard, plastic, metal, or combinations thereof. Preferably, the blank is a laminar cardboard blank having a weight of between about 100 grams per square metre and about 350 grams per square metre.
- The container may optionally comprise an outer wrapper, which is preferably a transparent polymeric film of, for example, high or low density polyethylene, polypropylene, oriented polypropylene, polyvinylidene chloride, cellulose film, or combinations thereof and the outer wrapper is applied in a conventional manner. The outer wrapper may include a tear tape. In addition, the outer wrapper may be printed with images, consumer information or other data.
- Preferably, the consumer goods within the box are provided as a bundle wrapped in a package of metal foil or metallised paper. The package material may be formed as a laminate of a metallised polyethylene film, and a liner material. The package material may also be a supercalendered glassine paper. In addition, the package material may be provided with a print-receptive top coating.
- The package, as well as the outer container, is preferably a rectangular parallelepiped comprising two wider walls spaced apart by two narrower walls.
- In particular, containers in accordance with the invention may advantageously be used to accommodate aerosol-generating articles wherein an aerosol-generating substrate is heated rather than burned to produce an inhalable aerosol. In particularly preferred embodiments, the aerosol-generating articles are of the type comprising a combustible heat source. Even more preferably, the combustible heat source is retractable and the aerosol-generating article comprises a tubular body adapted to at least partly receive the combustible heat source in the retracted condition.
- Through an appropriate choice of the dimensions, containers according to the invention may be designed to hold different total numbers of aerosol-generating article articles, or different arrangements of aerosol-generating articles.
- The invention will now be further described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:

Figure 1 is a schematic perspective view of a container in accordance with the present invention; and -
Figure 2 is another schematic perspective view of the container ofFigure 1 in an upside-down configuration. - A
container 10 according to the present invention is shown inFigures 1 and 2 . Thecontainer 10 is shaped as a rectangular parallelepiped and comprises abox 12, aprimary lid 14 at the top of thebox 12 and asecondary lid 16. Theprimary lid 14 is hinged to an upper portion of thebox 12 along afirst hinge line 18 extending along a back wall of the container. Thesecondary lid 16 is hinged to a lower portion of thebox 12 along asecond hinge line 20 extending along a front wall of the container. - The
container 10 comprises apackage 30 received within a first internal volume 32 thebox 12 and containing a group of aerosol-generatingarticles 34. A primary access opening 36 is provided at an upper end of thepackage 30 for extracting the aerosol-generating articles from the container. Thecontainer 10 further comprises a primary resealableadhesive label 38 extending beyond the periphery of the primary access opening 36. Theprimary resealable label 38 is movable between a sealed position, wherein the primary resealableadhesive label 38 occludes the primary access opening 36, and an open position, wherein the primary resealableadhesive label 38 is at least partly lifted off a surface of thepackage 30 to reveal the primary access opening 36. In more detail, a front end portion of the primary resealableadhesive label 36 is permanently affixed to the inner surface of the front wall of theprimary lid 14 such that, when the primary lid is moved from the closed position to the open position, the primary resealableadhesive label 36 is moved from the sealed configuration to the open configuration. - As shown more clearly in
Figure 2 , where thecontainer 10 has been turned upside down and from front to back, thebox 12 comprises areclosable extinguishment portion 40 defining a secondinternal volume 42 separate from the first internal volume 32, and anextinguishment substrate 44 in the secondinternal volume 42. The secondinternal volume 42 is longitudinally aligned with the first internal volume. - The
reclosable extinguishment portion 40 comprises a secondary access opening 46 which is provided at a lower end of thecontainer 12, and a resealableadhesive label 48 extending beyond the periphery of thesecondary access opening 46. The resealableadhesive label 48 is movable between a sealed position, wherein the resealableadhesive label 48 occludes and seals the secondary access opening 46, and an open position, wherein the resealableadhesive label 48 is at least partly lifted off to reveal thesecondary access opening 46. Thesecondary lid 16 is movable relative to thebox 12 between an open position, wherein the secondary access opening 46 and the resealableadhesive label 48 are accessible for the consumer, and a closed position, wherein thesecondary lid 16 prevents access to thereclosable extinguishment portion 40. As shown inFigure 2 , a front end portion of the resealableadhesive label 48 is permanently affixed to an inner surface of thesecondary lid 16, such that opening and closing of thesecondary lid 16 causes the resealableadhesive label 48 to correspondingly move between its closed and open positions. - The
reclosable extinguishment portion 40 comprises abag 50 formed from a barrier film and received in the secondinternal volume 42 for accommodating the extinguishing substrate. Theextinguishment substrate 44 comprises a super absorbent polymer loaded with water and forms a bed with a height of about 9 millimetres. A portion of the bed of super absorbent polymer is exposed through theextinguishment opening 46, the exposed surface area of the bed being about 400 square millimetres. - The
box 12 comprises a thirdinternal volume 60 transversely adjacent and separate from, the first internal volume 32 and the secondinternal volume 42. In the embodiment shown inFigure 1 , the thirdinternal volume 60 is to the right of the first internal volume 32. - The third
internal volume 60 defines a recycling compartment adapted to received extinguished aerosol-generating articles and has arecycling compartment opening 62 provided at a lower end of thebox 12. Areclosable cover flap 64 extends beyond the periphery of therecycling compartment opening 62 and is movable between a closed configuration, wherein thereclosable cover flap 62 occludes therecycling compartment opening 64, and an open configuration, wherein thereclosable cover flap 62 is at least partly lifted off a surface of the container (as shown inFigure 2 ) to reveal therecycling compartment opening 64.

- A container for aerosol-generating articles comprising:a box;a group of aerosol-generating articles within a first internal volume of the box;a primary lid movable relative to the box between an open position, wherein a primary access opening of the container is revealed for extracting at least an aerosol-generating article from the first internal volume, and a closed position, wherein the primary lid occludes the primary access opening;wherein the box comprises a reclosable extinguishment portion defining a second internal volume separate from the first internal volume, and an extinguishment substrate in the second internal volume;wherein the reclosable extinguishment portion comprises a secondary access opening and a resealable adhesive label extending beyond the periphery of the secondary access opening and movable between a sealed position, wherein the resealable adhesive label occludes the secondary access opening, and an open position, wherein the resealable adhesive label is at least partly lifted off a surface of the container to reveal the secondary access opening.
- A container according to claim 1 comprising a secondary lid movable relative to the box between an open position, wherein the secondary access opening is revealed to enable access to the second internal volume, and a closed position, wherein the secondary lid prevents access to the reclosable extinguishment portion.
- A container according to claim 1 or 2 wherein the reclosable extinguishment portion comprises a bag in the second internal volume for accommodating the extinguishing substrate, the bag being formed from a barrier film, the secondary access opening being formed in the bag and the resealable adhesive label being affixed to an outer surface of the bag.
- A container according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the extinguishing substrate comprises a super absorbent polymer loaded with water or a heat absorbing gel.
- A container according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein a bed of the extinguishing substrate in the second internal volume has a height of at least about 5 millimetres.
- A container according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein a portion of a bed of the extinguishing substrate in the second internal volume is exposed through the secondary access opening, said exposed portion having a surface area of at least about 60square millimetres.
- A container according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the first internal volume and the second internal volume of the box are longitudinally aligned.
- A container according to claim 7, wherein the primary access opening is provided at a top end of the box and the secondary access opening is provided at a bottom end of the box.
- A container according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the box comprises a third internal volume transversely adjacent and separate from the first internal volume and the second internal volume, the third internal volume defining a recycling compartment adapted to received extinguished aerosol-generating articles.
- A container according to claim 9 wherein the recycling compartment comprises a recycling compartment opening provided at a bottom end of the box
- A container according to claim 10 comprising a reclosable cover flap extending beyond the periphery of recycling compartment opening and movable between a closed position, wherein the reclosable cover flap occludes the recycling compartment opening, and an open position, wherein the reclosable cover flap is at least partly lifted off a surface of the container to reveal the recycling compartment opening.
- A container according to any one of the preceding claims comprising a primary resealable adhesive label extending beyond the periphery of the primary access opening and movable between a sealed position, wherein the primary resealable adhesive label occludes the primary access opening, and an open position, wherein the primary resealable adhesive label is at least partly lifted off a surface of the container to reveal the primary access opening.
- A container according to claim 12, wherein an end portion of the primary resealable adhesive label is permanently affixed to a surface of the primary lid such that, when the primary lid is moved from the closed position to the open position, the primary resealable adhesive label is moved from the sealed position to the open position.
