Description

Device and method for mounting and encasing a fireplace, stove or heating appliance.
The present invention relates to a device for mounting a fireplace, stove or heating appliance against or close to one or a number or walls and for installing a casing around this fireplace or this heating appliance and cupboards or shelves adjacent to this casing to form a furniture unit in which the fireplace or the heating appliance is integrated.
There are already devices known to do this, but these have many disadvantages and therefore require improvement. According to the present state of the art, typically first a fireplace or heating appliance is mounted and, afterwards, a casing is built around this fireplace or this heating appliance, which is possibly integrated at a later stage in surrounding cupboards or shelves or such.
A device which is suitable for this according to the state of the art, needs to be adapted each time to the local conditions surrounding the installation. For example, the dimensions of the casing and surrounding cupboards and shelves must be measured and sized to fit.
Also, walls and floors are often not perfectly straight or flush, requiring all kinds of tools to be used to correct these minor flaws. Such modifications take considerable time and are therefore also expensive.
Also, when working in this way it is not possible to use a standard approach and adapted solutions need to be found time and time again depending on the circumstances.
Therefore, the purpose of the present invention is to provide a solution to one or several of the aforementioned disadvantages or potential other disadvantages.
To this end, the invention concerns a device for mounting a fireplace, stove or heating appliance against or close to one or several walls and for installing a casing around said fireplace or heating appliance and cupboards or shelves adjacent to this casing to form a furniture unit in which the fireplace or the heating appliance is integrated, whereby this device contains metal elements for forming a metal structure which at least surrounds the fireplace for installation or heating appliance to be installed and which is suspended from the wall or walls and non-metal elements which at least contain heat insulating panels intended to form the inside of the casing and which are or can be attached directly to the metal structure.
A great advantage of a device according to the invention is that it contains metal elements with which a metal structure can be formed, for hanging on the wall or walls and serving as a carcass or underlying structure for the suspension of the other elements in the casing and furniture unit. By using such a suspended metal structure, the casing and furniture unit can be constructed in a way that allows any adjustment work to remove alignment errors in the floors and walls to be done very easily.
Indeed, the other elements of the furniture unit are attached to the metal structure.
An almost independent structure is achieved after mounting and suspending the metal structure, whereby during further installation of the casing and furniture unit there is no or little need to allow for the surrounding structures formed by walls and floors. Thus, a device according to the invention provides a solution that is applicable under all kinds of circumstances without the need for large or time-consuming local modifications. This adds a tremendous amount to the efficiency with which a fireplace or heating appliance can be integrated in a furniture unit and results in limiting the costs associated with such installation considerably. In a preferred embodiment of a device according to the invention the metal elements for forming the metal structure comprise at least the following elements:
- metal profiles intended for vertical installation and for attachment to the aforementioned wall or walls and from which other elements in the casing and the furniture unit can be suspended; - attachment means for attaching the metal profiles in an adjustable manner to the wall concerned; and,
- a pair of metal side panels and a metal front panel for forming part of the casing.
This embodiment of a device according to the invention is very practical, as it is relatively simple to first attach metal profiles to a wall in a vertical position and then the part of the casing for the fireplace or the heating appliance, formed by suspending a pair of metal side panels and a metal front panel from these metal profiles.
The attachment means with which the metal profiles are attached to a relevant wall, are also adjustable in this embodiment, so that alignment errors in the walls and/floors can be easily accommodated for.
In another preferred embodiment of a device according to the invention the aforementioned metal profiles comprise U- shaped profiles formed by two side flanks connected by a base and the attachment means is formed by L-shaped attachment profiles with a first leg and a second leg, whereby each such U-shaped metal profile can be hung on a wall using a pair of such L-shaped attachment profiles by connecting each relevant side flank to a leg of one of the L-shaped attachment profiles of that pair and whereby these side flanks can be attached in an adjustable manner to these attachment profiles. It is clear that such an embodiment of a device according to the invention offers tremendous benefits, given that the attachment profiles can first be very easily attached to the wall concerned further to which the U-shaped metal profiles are just as easily attached to this.
Alternatively it is not, however, precluded to pre-mount the metal on the attachment profiles, for example in a production hall and then to suspend the entire construction from a wall.
In doing so, a vertical set-up and a mutual alignment of the metal profiles can be ensured in a very simple manner due to the adjustable nature of the connection between the metal profiles and the attachment profiles.
The invention also concerns a method for mounting a fireplace or heating appliance against or close to one or a number of walls and for installing a casing around said fireplace or heating appliance and cupboards or shelves attached to this casing to form a furniture unit in which the fireplace or the heating appliance is integrated.
Characteristic of this method according to the invention is that the method includes at least the following steps:
- formation of a metal structure with metal elements which at least surrounds the fireplace to be installed or the heating appliance to be installed, whereby the metal structure is suspended from the wall or walls; and,
- suspension of non-metal elements which at least contain heat insulating panels directly on the metal structure to create the inside of the casing.
In addition, preferably a method according to the invention is such that in the formation of the metal structure the profiles are first placed vertically and attached to the aforementioned wall or walls using adjustable attachment means whereby during attachment one or a number of the following parameters is or can be adjusted:
- the distance between the wall concerned and the metal profile;
- the angle between the wall concerned and the metal profile; and/or,
- the height at which the profile concerned is attached to the wall.
In yet another preferred method according to the invention the part of the casing is formed in a following step by hooking a pair of metal side panels in a pair of the aforementioned metal profiles, whereby the pair of metal profiles is attached to the wall at a distance in line with the width of the casing to be formed, and subsequently a metal front panel is hooked on to or suspended from these side panels.
The advantages of such a method according to the invention are obvious and are of the same nature as those mentioned above with regard to a device according to the invention. With the intention of better showing the characteristics of the invention, a preferred embodiment according to the invention is described hereinafter, together with a method according to the invention, by way of an example without any limiting nature, with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein: figure 1 shows a perspective view of a room whereby, in line with a first step in a method according to the invention, part of a device is suspended from a wall according to the invention;
figures 2A, 2B and 2C show a perspective view and on a larger scale the parts indicated in figure 1 with F2A,
F2B and F2C respectively; and,
figures 3 to 13 illustrate the consecutive steps in a method according to the invention during the installation of a device according to the invention.
In figure 1 the result is shown after carrying out a first step of a method according to the invention during the installation of a device 1 according to the invention.
Hereby, in this case it is the intention for a fireplace 2 or heating appliance to be installed against or close to a wall 3 in a room 4. With the device 1 according to the invention a casing 5 is constructed around this fireplace 2 as well as cupboards 6 or shelves 7 adjacent to this casing 5 to form a furniture unit 8 in which the fireplace or the heating appliance is integrated.
The result hereby obtained is illustrated in figure 13.
To this end, the device 1 according to the invention contains metal elements 9, as well as non-metal elements 10. It is the intention that a metal structure 11 is formed with the metal elements 9 that at least surrounds the fireplace 2 to be installed and that is suspended from the wall 3.
In the example under discussion the device 1 contains the following metal elements 9 for forming the metal structure 11. First and foremost there are oblong, straight metal profiles 12, which in this case are made as U-shaped metal profiles 13 or as metal end profiles 14 with an L-shaped section. These metal profiles 12 are intended for vertical installation and are to be attached to the wall 3 in order to subsequently suspend other elements of the casing 5 and the furniture unit 8 from it directly. The metal elements 9 further comprise attachment means 15 for attaching the metal profiles 12 to the wall 3.
These attachment means 15 are in this case made as oblong attachment profiles 16 and oblong end attachment profiles 17 in a shape that is complementary to the shape of the metal profiles 13 and the metal end profiles 14 respectively or a shape that allows an easy connection to be made between a metal profile 13 and an oblong attachment profile 16 on the one hand, and between a metal end profile 14 and an oblong attachment profile 16 on the other. As illustrated in more detail in figure 2A, the U-shaped, metal profiles 13 are formed by two side flanks 18 which are connected by a base 19. In this case the attachment profiles 16 have an L-shaped section 20 and are formed by a first leg 21 and a second leg 22 that are placed perpendicular to each other.
Finishing the device 1 at the extremities 23 of the furniture unit 8 in the example shown there are oblong end attachment profiles 17 which in this case also have an L- shaped section 24 and which are formed using two legs 25 and 26 placed perpendicular to each other. This is shown in more detail in figure 2B.
More particularly, the end attachment profiles 17 and the attachment profiles 16 in this particular case are identical, but this does not necessarily need to be the case according to the invention.
In other embodiments attachment profiles 16 and end attachment profiles 17 can also be applied with forms that are different to each other and/or with forms that are totally different to the form illustrated in the figures.
A metal end profile 14 is in this case realised as an L- shaped profile 14 with an L-shaped section formed by a first leg 27 and a second leg 28 which are perpendicular to each other, whereby one of the legs 27 of such an end profile 14 can be attached in a simple manner to one of the legs 25 of an end attachment profile 17. The leg 27 of the end profile 14 is realised with a width B which is sufficiently large to allow sufficient space to be able to suspend other elements of the furniture unit 8 from an end profile 14.
During installation of the fireplace 2 and the device 1 in accordance with a method according to the invention, the attachment profiles 16 and end attachment profiles 17 can be suspended from the wall 3 during a first step.
To this end, the metal end attachment profiles 17 are attached with one leg 26 vertically against the wall 3 at the extremities 23 of the furniture unit 8.
Depending on the dimensions of the furniture unit 8, more or less attachment profiles 16 are installed against the wall 3, also in a vertical position and in pairs between these L-shaped metal end attachment profiles 17, whereby these attachment profiles 16 are placed against the wall 3 with the legs 26.
The other legs 25 of such a pair of attachment profiles mounted against the wall 3 extend parallel to each other between the legs 26 at a distance B' from each other corresponding to the width B" of the U-shaped profiles 13 at twice the thickness of the side flanks 18 of such a metal profile 13. To attach the attachment profiles 16 and end attachment profiles 17 it is possible, for example, to use bolts or screws which are applied through holes 29 in the attachment profiles 16 and end attachment profiles 17 and screwed in a wall plug or suchlike.
Subsequently, the metal profiles 13 and metal end profiles 14 can be fitted over the mounted attachment profiles, over attachment profiles 16 and end attachment profiles 17 respectively.
This can be done in an adjustable manner, meaning that the metal profiles 13 and metal end profiles 14 can be correctly aligned before being fixed to the attachment profiles 16 and end attachment profiles 17.
Indeed, in the case of a metal profile 13, fixing is done by connecting both side flanks 18 to one of the legs 25 of the relevant pair of attachment profiles 16, while in the case of a metal end profile 14 the leg 27 of the end profile 14 is connected with the leg 25 of the relevant end attachment profile 17.
This, for example, allows the distance between the wall 3 and a metal profile 13 or metal end profile 14 to be changed and set, for example to achieve a specific distance between the furniture unit 8 and the wall 3, or to align all profiles 13 and end profiles 14 to lie flush.
The angle between the wall 3 and a metal profile 13 or metal end profile 14 can also be set, for example to set up the appropriate metal profile 13 or metal end profile 14 in a perfect vertical position, should the relevant attachment profiles 16 or the relevant end attachment profile 17 not be attached in a perfectly vertical fashion to the wall 3, for example because of local irregularities in the wall 3 or because the wall 3 was not built to be exactly vertical, which, however, is less likely in practice. Finally, the height can also be set if necessary, whereby a metal profile 13 or metal end profile 14 is attached to an attachment profile 16 or end attachment profile 17 against the floor 29 of the room 4.
It is clear that, in this way, the profiles 13 and end profiles 14 can be very easily and perfectly aligned relative to one another and to the wall 3 and floor 30 and that they can be fitted in a perfectly vertical position without any problem.
Alternatively, it is also possible according to the invention to connect attachment profiles 16 in pairs beforehand with a metal profile 13 and/or to connect end attachment profiles 17 with end profiles 14, for example in a production hall, before suspending these pre-mounted units in a vertical position from the wall 3 or walls 3. According to the invention it is not precluded to use additional metal profiles 12 and attachment means 15 or metal profiles 12 and attachment means 15 in an entirely different form.
This is, for example, the case in figure 1, whereby use is made of additional metal profiles 12 for mounting a pair of metal profiles 13 which are each attached to a pair of attachment profiles 16 and which are intended for the casing 5. More specifically in this case, use is made of an additional linear profile 31 with legs that can be adjusted in height 32. This additional linear profile 31 is used, temporarily or otherwise, to support the relevant attachment profiles 16 and/or the metal profiles 13 during attachment to the wall 3 and to set the height H between these attachment profiles 16 and the floor 30.
Part of the additional linear profile 31 is shown in more detail in figure 2C.
Furthermore, in this case, there are also three extra metal profiles 33 provided between the pair of metal profiles 14 which establish the distance D between the attachment profiles 16 according to the width D of the casing 5 to be made and which should be mounted in a horizontal position. These additional metal profiles 33 can be applied temporarily during installation of the relevant pair of metal profiles 13 and the relevant attachment profiles 16 or they can be integrated permanently in the device 1. Of course, it is also possible to apply additional linear profiles 31 and metal profiles 33 between other pairs of metal profiles 13, end profiles 14, attachment profiles 16 and/or end attachment profiles 17. Also, according to the invention, it is not precluded to apply a method whereby both steps or all steps in the method are carried out in a different order than is described in this text.
The device 1 also contains non-metal elements 10.
According to the invention there are, at minimum, non-metal elements 10 provided in the form of heat-insulating panels 34 intended to form the inside 35 of the casing 5 which are or can be suspended directly from the metal structure 11.
Figure 3 illustrates that a second step of a method according to the invention can be to apply such a heat- insulating panel 34 between the aforementioned pair of metal profiles 13 and the relevant attachment profiles 16 for the casing 5 to form the back wall 36 of the casing 5.
In a next step of a method according to the invention the fireplace 2 or the heating appliance can then be placed, with the back directed towards or against the aforementioned heat-insulating panel 34, in front of the back wall 36.
This is illustrated in figure 4.
The fireplace 2 is in this case provided with a double concentric channel 37 for the removal of fumes and the supply of air fitted at one extremity 38 in the middle at the top 39 of the fireplace or stove 2 and which, in this case, is at least in a partly vertical position. In figure 4, of course, only part of this double concentric channel 37 is shown and in practice the other extremity of this channel 37 is connected to a pipe leading outside. The internal channel of the double concentric channel 37 is intended to remove combustion fumes from the fireplace 2, while concentrically around it, an external channel is provided to supply fresh air to the combustion chamber in the fireplace 2.
The fireplace 2 is further provided with two convection channels 40 intended, by convection, to achieve an efficient transfer of heat generated in the fireplace 2 to the room 4.
These convection channels 40 must be connected in a later stage during the installation of the device 1 to convection outlets 41. These convection outlets 41 are also already shown in figure 4.
The metal elements 9 in the device 1 according to the invention comprise, at minimum, also a pair of metal side panels 42 and 43 and a metal front panel 44 intended to form a part of the casing 5.
Figure 5 illustrates how, in a following step of a method according to the invention the side panels 42 and 43 are suspended from the relevant metal profiles 13. These side panels 42 and 43 are hereby vertically aligned with the width D of the metal front panel 44 and suspended in parallel. According to the invention, to this end, each metal side panel 42 and 43 for the casing 5 is preferably provided with a first side edge 45 in such a shape that the relevant metal side panel 42 or 43 can be suspended directly with this side edge 45 from an aforementioned vertically- positioned metal profile 13.
Also preferably, according to the invention, the aforementioned first side edge 45 of a metal side panel 42 or 43 and an aforementioned metal profile 13 are provided with complementary cooperating parts allowing a metal side 42 or 43 to be suspended from a metal profile 13 without requiring the use of additional means.
For example, the aforementioned cooperating parts can consist of a series of hooks provided on the first side edge 45 of the side panels 42 and 43 which can hook into a series of holes provided in the metal profiles 13.
Of course, according to the invention, it is not precluded for the metal profiles 13 and side panels 42 and 43 to be made in other shapes or for other means to be used to suspend the side panels 42 and 43 from the appropriate metal profile 13. The intention hereby is that a rigid suspension is achieved of a side panel 42 or 43 from such a metal profile 13, whereby such side panels 42 or 43 are immobile or practically immobile once suspended.
Figure 6 illustrates that, in a potential next step in a method according to the invention, a heat-insulating panel 34 also can be fitted to the inside 35 of each of the side panels 42 and 43 to form a heat-insulating inside cladding of the casing 5. A next step of a method according to the invention can consist of suspending the metal front panel 44 from the side panels 42 and 43 that are already mounted.
This is illustrated in the figures 7 and 8.
In the example shown, the inside 35 of the metal front panel 44 is previously clad with a heat-insulating panel 34. In order to ensure the simple mounting of the metal front panel 44, according to the invention, the metal front panel 44 is preferably realised with a pair of opposing side edges 46 in such a shape that the relevant metal front panel 44 can be suspended with each of these side edges 46 directly and also without any additional means from the pair of metal side panels 42 and 43.
According to the invention, the embodiment is hereby also such that each aforementioned side edge 46 of the front panel 44 can be suspended from a second side edge 47 of a relevant suspended metal side 42 or 43. This second side edge 47 is the side edge 47 opposing the the first side edge 45 of the relevant metal side 42 or 43.
Once again, according to the invention, it is preferably so that the aforementioned second side edge 47 of a metal side panel 42 or 43 and the aforementioned opposing side edges 46 of the metal front panel 44 are provided with complementary, cooperating parts, allowing the metal front panel 44 to be suspended directly from the metal side panels 42 and 43 without requiring the use of additional means to do so.
These complementary parts can be formed using hooks and holes aligned in such a way that the front panel 44 can easily be hooked in the side panels 42 and 43, although other forms and other methods can also be used to suspend the front panel 44.
Once the front panel 44 is installed, a rigid construction is achieved in the form of casing 5 which surrounds the fireplace 2.
The connection of the front panel 44 to the side panels 42 and 43 is hereby such that this casing 5 is perfectly perpendicular.
The front panel 44 is further provided with openings 48 in which the convection outlets 41 for the convection channels 40 are mounted.
After mounting these convection outlets 41 the convection channels 40 can be connected to them. In other steps of a method according to the invention the casing 5 and the other parts 6 and 7 of the furniture unit 8 can be finalised.
To this end, a device 1 according to the invention preferably contains additional metal and non-metal elements 49 to clad the casing 5 and to form the adjacent parts 6 and 7 of the furniture unit 8, whereby these additional elements 49 are also attached or suspended directly from the pre-mounted metal structure 11.
In the case of the figures, the device 1 is provided with such additional elements 49 in the form of oblong convection grids 50 attached to the outside 51 of the casing 5 over the convection outlets 41 of the front panel 44.
Furthermore, there are three additional metal profiles or supports 52 provided on the outside 51 of the front panel 44 parallel to each other in the vertical direction, as well as a pair of metal profiles or supports 53 on each of the side panels 42 and 43. These metal profiles or supports 52 and 53 can be an integral part of the relevant front panel 44 or the side panels 42 and 43 or fitted as additional metal elements 49 on the front panel 44 and the side panels 42 and 43. All this is illustrated in figure 9. The aforementioned metal profiles or supports 52 and 53 are intended for the application of other additional elements 49 in the form of wooden panels 54. Thus, with these wooden panels 54, both the outside 55 of the side panels 42 and 43, and the outside 56 of parts of the front panel 44 are clad or covered, creating an aesthetic whole. Figures 10 and 11 illustrate the result after applying these wooden panels 54.
Finally, in the figures 12 and 13, it is illustrated how with other additional elements 49 the shelves 7 and the cupboards 6 adjacent to the casing 5 can be suspended from the pre-mounted metal structure 11.
According to the invention, the shelves 7 preferably use additional elements 49 in the form of one or several metal horizontal planks which are attached to the metal profiles 12 of the metal structure 11 and which are connected to wooden horizontal planks 57 and/or back planks 58 using metal elements. At the bottom, to finish things off, it is possible to use one or several wooden plinth cupboards 59.
For the installation of the adjacent cupboards 6 use is made of additional elements 49 in the form of one or several wooden or metal cupboards 60 or cupboard components which are suspended from the metal structure 11. Of course, the embodiment discussed here is just an example .
This example is intended to show a person skilled in the art how the invention can be applied, however, the present invention can, in reality, be in many other forms and be realised according to many other potential methods.
The present invention is by no means limited to the embodiment of a device 1 according to the invention described as an example but such a device 1 can be realised in all kinds of forms and dimensions without departing from the scope of the invention. Equally, the current invention is in no way limited to the method according to the invention described as an example, however other methods can be applied without departing from the scope of the invention.
