Abstract
A head (100) is described for a bed including a main portion (101) and at least a side portion (102) of the head (100). The side portion (102) is adjacent to the main portion to define a side extension of said main portion (101). The head also includes a hinge area (103) interposed between the main portion (101) of the head and the side portion (102) of the head, to allow rotation of the side portion (102) with respect to the main portion (101).
Description
- The present invention refers to a headboard for a bed and a bed including said headboard.
- In the field of bed manufacturing, the headboard normally includes a rigid and flat table solidly applied to one side of the bed frame so as to be perpendicular to the floor of the room on which the latter is positioned.
- To improve the comfort provided by the bed, headboards covered with soft materials are known so as to make more comfortable for the user laying the back. This type of headboard is particularly useful when the bed is used for activities such as watching television, reading or eating, in which the user is in a sitting position.
- The known headers, although convenient from many points of view, have some drawbacks.
- For example, known headers do not provide the user with a protection from possible direct light sources or air draughts from the sides of the bed frame. For the same reason, the known headers do not allow providing the user with a support able to prevent falls from the sides of the bed frame during sleep.
- Another drawback lies in the fact that known headers present a limited chance of customization.
- In fact, known headers being fixed solidly to the headboard of the bed make it particularly difficult modifying the appearance of the latter, except through expensive and time-consuming interventions, such as the replacement of the headboard.
- Therefore, the technical problem underlying the present invention is that of providing a headboard which allows overcoming at least one of the drawbacks above-mentioned with reference to the prior art and/or providing further advantages.
- This problem is solved by a bed headboard with at least one side adjustable portion according to
claim 1. Beds comprising a bed headboard according to the present invention also fall within the scope of the claims, and in particular are the subject matter of claim 6. - Preferred characteristics of the present invention are the subject of the dependent claims. Further characteristics of the present invention are defined in the corresponding dependent claims.
- In practice, according to the present innovation, the headboard is provided with a side extension which extends and projects laterally with respect to the bed frame. The possibility of orienting the side extension is obtained by means of a hinge zone which is located between a main portion of the headboard, which is mainly located in correspondence with the bed frame, and the side extension. There may be two adjustable side extensions.
- In other words, the side extension is not fixed but can be angularly displaced, preferably about a vertical axis and preferably between a position in which the side extension is aligned with a remaining portion of the headboard and a position in which the side extension forms angle different from 180°, preferably between 180° and 90° with the headboard of the bed.
- The hinge area can be obtained by covering or padding the headboard. To this end, the main portion and the side portion or side extension are each formed by a panel, or a plate body. The panel forming the side portion is physically separated from the panel forming the main portion. There is a gap between the two panels. A single padding or covering sheet or wrapping wraps both panels, and the wrapping portion located at the gap defines a hinge region.
- The present innovation provides some significant advantages. The main advantage consists in the fact that the bed headboard with freely adjustable side portions allow positioning said side portions so as to provide the user with a protection from air draughts or direct light sources coming from the sides of the bed frame. Moreover, said adjustable side portions can be positioned so as to represent a barrier reducing the risk of accidental falls during sleep.
- A further advantage is represented by the fact that the side portions being easily and independently adjustable from one another allow customizing the appearance of the bed in a few simple steps. In addition, by positioning the side portions along the two sides adjacent to the side to which the main portion of the headboard is fixed, it is possible limiting the vision of the bed, thus providing a greater sense of privacy and intimacy, which is of utmost importance in open space homes, or in houses having small dimensions where the space is used in a multi-functional way.
- Other advantages, features and methods of use of the present invention will be evident from the following detailed description of some embodiments, presented by way of a non-limiting example.
- The advantages, together with the characteristics and manner of use of the present invention, will be apparent from the following detailed description of its preferred embodiments, presented by way of a non-limiting example.
- Reference will be made to the figures of the attached drawings, in which:
-
Figure 1 shows a front perspective view of a bed comprising a headboard according to the present invention; -
Figure 2 shows a front view of a bed comprising a headboard according to the present invention; -
Figure 3 is a schematic cross-section view of part of the main portion of the headboard and of one of the two side portions; -
Figure 4 shows, in a side view, the detail of one of the two side portions in the "closing" position; -
Figure 5 shows some of the possible positions that can be adopted by the two side portions. - The present innovation will be described below with reference to the above-mentioned figures, illustrating a preferred embodiment thereof.
- As shown in
Figure 1 and inFigure 2 , the headboard according to the present innovation, denoted in complex with 100, comprises three portions: amain portion 101 and twoside portions 102, each representing a side extension of the latter. - The
headboard 100 is intended to be integral with the base or frame of abed 200 so that it is perpendicular to the floor of the room in which the bed is placed in use and that themain portion 101 is positioned at one of the sides of thebed base 200. Eachside portion 102 protrudes with respect to the bed base orframe 200, i.e. sticking out with respect to thebed base 200. The bed frame is intended as the part of the bed where one lies down and at the head of which theheadboard 100 is placed. - The
headboard 100 is connected to thebed frame 200 by means of lockedconnections 109 of a type per se known, such as for example male-female couplings. - As shown in detail in
Figure 4 , theheadboard 100 is completely upholstered by an outer covering orouter wrapping 103, preferably in fabric, leather or faux leather, onto which there are two opening-closing means 104 located at L1 and L2 that delimitate themain portion 101 with respect to eachside portion 102. Said opening-closing means 104 may be zip closures or other means that easily allow opening and closing theouter casing 103 along said axes. - As illustrated in
Figure 3 , inside theouter casing 103 there are three rigid panels covered by a padding made of a preferably soft material, such as for example foam rubber or synthetic fibres. These three panels are: amain panel 105 and twoside panels 106, which respectively represent the internal structure of themain portion 101 and of theside portions 102. Theside panels 106 are physically separated from themain panel 105. Between eachside panel 106 and themain panel 105, there is thus a gap, or hinge area, 107 which allows the rotation of theside panels 106 about the axes L1 and L2. The axes L1 and L2 are therefore hinge axes. - It follows that the
outer casing 103 or the fabric defines a hinge zone. - In fact, as shown in
Figure 4 and inFigure 5 , opening the opening-closing means 104, it is possible to independently rotate eachside panel 106 so as to make each of the twoside portions 102 assuming any desirable position between a so called "opening" position, wherein the side portion is aligned with themain portion 101, i.e. forming with it an angle of 180°, and a so called "closing" position, in which the side portion forms an angle smaller than 90° with themain portion 101. In order to support and ensure the stability of theside portions 102, wherever they are positioned, at least onesupport foot 108 is present, interposed between eachside portion 102 and the floor of the room onto which the bed is placed. - It can be observed that the hinge region can be obtained by other methods known to a person skilled in the art, by means of more sophisticated devices.
- The present invention has been herein described with reference to a preferred embodiment thereof. It is to be understood that other embodiments may exist which belong to the same inventive core, as defined by the scope of the protection of the claims set forth below.
