Definitions

  • the present invention relates to a rigid package with a hinged lid.
  • the present invention finds advantageous application to a cigarette package, to which the following description will make explicit reference without implying any loss of generality.
  • the patent application WO2011051076-A1 describes a rigid cigarette package with a hinged lid comprising: a group of cigarettes; an inner container housing the group of cigarettes; an outer container, which houses the inner container in a sliding manner to allow the inner container to translate longitudinally relative to the outer container; a cup-shaped lid, which has a rear wall that is hinged to a rear wall of the outer container so as to allow the lid to rotate relative to the outer container; and a lifting mechanism which lifts the inner container relative to the outer container by using the rotation movement of the lid towards an open position.
  • a front wall of the outer container has a circular-shaped through hole, through which an underlying print is visible impressed upon a front wall of the inner container.
  • the through-hole of the front wall of the outer container is internally coated with a partially transparent and partially translucent panel that changes the vision of the print impressed on the front wall of the inner container by means of the relative movement between the inner container and the outer container.
  • the object of the present invention is to provide a rigid package with a hinged lid, which said rigid package being free of the drawbacks described above and, at the same time, being easy and inexpensive to manufacture.
  • number 1 denotes as a whole a rigid cigarette package with a hinged lid.
  • the cigarette package 1 illustrated in Figure 1 comprises a wrapped group 2 of cigarettes (schematically visible in Figure 3 ), namely a group of cigarettes wrapped in a wrapping sheet of metallized paper.
  • the cigarette package 1 comprises a rigid type of inner container 3 (partially visible in Figure 3 and fully visible in Figure 4 ), inside which the wrapped group 2 of cigarettes is directly placed, and a rigid type of outer container 4, which houses the inner container 3 in a sliding manner to allow the inner container 3 to slide relative to the outer container 4 and to move with a linear translation movement between a lowered position (illustrated in Figures 1 and 2 ), wherein the inner container 3 is fully inserted inside the outer container 4, and an extracted position (illustrated in Figure 3 ), wherein the inner container 3 is partially extracted from the outer container 4 to facilitate the access to the wrapped group 2 of cigarettes.
  • the outer container 4 is parallelepiped-shaped with a rectangular cross section, it is cup-shaped and has an open upper end, a lower wall 5 opposite to the open upper end, a front wall 6 and a rear wall 7 parallel and opposite to each other, and two side walls 8 parallel and opposite to each other. Between the walls 6 and 7 and the side walls 8 four longitudinal edges are defined whereas between the walls 6, 7 and 8 and the lower wall 5 four transverse edges are defined.
  • the cigarette package 1 comprises a lid 9, which is also cup-shaped and is hinged to the outer container 4 along a hinge 10 to rotate, relative to the outer container 4, between a closed position (illustrated in Figures 1 and 2 ) and an open position (illustrated in Figure 3 ) of the open upper end of the outer container 4.
  • the lid 9 has an upper wall 11 (which, when the lid 9 is in the closed position, is parallel and opposite to the lower wall 5 of the outer container 4), a front wall 12 (which, when the lid 9 is in the closed position, is coplanar to the front wall 6 of the outer container 4), a rear wall 13 (which is connected with the rear wall 7 of the outer container 4 by means of the hinge 10 and, when the lid 9 is in the closed position, it is coplanar to the rear wall 7 of the outer container 4), and two side walls 14 parallel and opposite to each other (which, when the lid 9 is in the closed position, are coplanar and adjacent to the corresponding side walls 8 of the outer container 4). Between the walls 12 and 13 and the side walls 14 four longitudinal edges are defined whereas between the walls 12, 13 and 14 and the upper wall 11 four transverse edges are defined.
  • the inner container 3 is parallelepiped-shaped with a rectangular cross section, it is cup-shaped and has an open upper end, a lower wall 15 opposite to the open upper end and parallel to the lower wall 5 of the outer container 4, a front wall 16 parallel to the front wall 6 of the outer container 4 and a rear wall 17 parallel to the rear wall 7 of the outer container 4.
  • the inner container 3 is devoid of the side walls (namely it is laterally opened) whereas in the alternative, illustrated in Figure 11 (better described hereinafter), the inner container 3 also has two side walls 18 parallel to the side walls 8 of the outer container 4. Between the walls 16 and 17 and the side walls 18 (when present) four longitudinal edges are defined whereas between the walls 16, 17 and 18 (when present) and the lower wall 15 four transverse edges are defined.
  • the package 1 terms as “bottom” and “top” and “front” and “rear” will be used to designate the positions of portions of the cigarette package 1, assuming that the package 1 is located in an arrangement such that the direction of its prevailing development coincides with the vertical direction; therefore, the lower and upper walls are arranged “at the bottom” and “at the top”, respectively, and the front and rear walls define the “the front” and “the rear”, respectively.
  • the prevailing development direction also defines a longitudinal movement direction which is perpendicular to the transverse movement direction.
  • the inner container 3 slides relative to the outer container 4 with a linear translation movement parallel to the longitudinal edges between a lowered position (illustrated in Figures 1 and 2 ), wherein the inner container 3 is fully inserted inside the outer container 4 and the lower wall 15 of the inner container 3 is resting (namely in contact) with the lower wall 5 of the outer container 4, and an extracted position (illustrated in Figure 3 ), wherein the inner container 3 is partially extracted from the outer container 4 and the lower wall 15 of the inner container 3 is spaced apart by a certain distance, other than zero, from the lower wall 5 of the outer container 4 (said distance corresponds to the lifting of the inner container 3 relative to the outer container 4).
  • the rear wall 13 of the lid 9 is permanently connected to the rear wall 17 of the inner container 3 by means of a lifting mechanism 19 of the inner container 3 (illustrated in Figure 4 ). It is important to note that the rear wall 13 of the lid 9 is connected to the rear wall 17 of the inner container 3 only and solely by means of the lifting mechanism 19, namely outside of the lifting mechanism 19, the rear wall 13 of the lid 9 is completely separate and independent of the rear wall 17 of the inner container 3.
  • the longitudinal lifting mechanism 19 of the inner container 3 "automatically” controls (that is, without the user having to touch the inner container 3) and by using the rotation movement of the lid 9, the axial translation (namely the sliding) of the inner container 3 relative to the outer container 4 between the lowered position and the extracted position and vice versa; in other words, the lifting mechanism 19 uses the rotation movement of the lid 9 to "automatically” actuate (that is, without the user having to touch the inner container 3) the axial translation (namely the sliding) of the inner container 3 relative to the outer container 4 between the lowered position and the extracted position and vice versa.
  • the lifting mechanism 19 comprises a rigid connection tab 20, which, on one side, is directly hinged to the rear wall 17 of the inner container 3 and is integral to the rear wall 13 of the lid 9 (typically the connection tab 20 overlaps and is glued to the rear wall 13 of the lid 9). Furthermore, the lifting mechanism 19 comprises a rigid reinforcement tab 21, which is hinged to the connection tab 20 and overlaps, and is glued to the connection tab 20 to reinforce (strengthen, stiffen) the connection tab 20 itself.
  • the reinforcement tab 21 is not strictly necessary, as it does not have any role in the functioning of the connection tab 20 (which would function in the same way even without the reinforcement tab 21); the reinforcement tab 21 has the only function to reinforce (strengthen, stiffen) the connection tab 20 improving (but not changing in substance) the functioning of the connection tab 20.
  • the cigarette package 1 comprises a collar 22, which is connected (by gluing) to the outer container 4 (namely it is rigidly and permanently connected to outer container 4) to project partly outside the open upper end of the outer container 4 and engage a corresponding inner surface of the lid 9 when the lid 9 itself is arranged in the closed position.
  • the collar 22 has, in cross section, a "U" shape and comprises a front wall 23 which is supported and glued to the front wall 6 of the outer container 4 and two side walls 24, each of which rests against and is glued to a corresponding side wall 8 of the outer container 4.
  • the front wall 23 of the collar 22 has, at the top, a recess 25 which is arranged outside the open upper end of the outer container 4 (namely is located completely in the part of the front wall 23 which juts out from the open upper end of the outer container 4) and is "U"-shaped.
  • the front wall 23 of the collar 22 is provided with a pair of claws 26 which laterally project, so as to engage with interference the lid 5, when lid 5 is in the closed position, so as to keep the lid 5 in the closed position with greater force.
  • the front wall 23 of the collar 22 is devoid of the claws 26.
  • the collar 22 is integral (glued) to the outer container 4, therefore the inner container 3 (carrying the group 2 of cigarettes) slides longitudinally relative to both the outer container 4, and to the collar 22 which is integral (glued) to the outer container 4.
  • the front wall 16 of the inner container 3 has a print 27 or other graphic signs (which for example represents a graphic design, a logo and/or drawing) that is covered by the collar 22 when the lid 9 is in the closed position (namely when the inner container 3 is in the lowered position wherein the inner container 3 is fully inserted inside the outer container 4) and is visible when the lid 9 is in the open position (namely when the inner container 3 is in the extracted position wherein the inner container 3 is partially extracted from the outer container 4).
  • a print 27 or other graphic signs which for example represents a graphic design, a logo and/or drawing
  • the print 27 becomes progressively visible by jutting out from the collar 22 (in particular from the recess 25 of the front wall 23 of the collar 22) and vice versa.
  • the print 27 is immediately under an upper edge of the front wall 23 of the collar 22 to jut out from the upper edge of the wall front 23 of the collar 22 following the lifting of the inner container 3.
  • Figures 5 and 6 are illustrated schematically with a front portion of the cigarette package 1, with the removal of the outer container 4 and of the lid 9: note that as the print 27 impressed on the front wall 16 of the inner container 3 is covered by the front wall 23 of the collar 22 when the lid 9 is in the closed position (namely when the inner container 3 is in the lowered position) as illustrated in Figure 5 and is, instead, arranged outside of the front wall 23 of collar 22 (namely it is visible as it is no longer being covered by the front wall 23 of the collar 22) when the lid 9 is in the open position (namely when the inner container 3 is in the extracted position) as illustrated in Figure 6 .
  • the outer container 4 and the lid 9 are obtained starting from a flat blank 28 having a substantially elongated rectangular shape and being of a known type (namely, of the type commonly used to make a rigid cigarette package with a hinged lid).
  • a flat blank 28 having a substantially elongated rectangular shape and being of a known type (namely, of the type commonly used to make a rigid cigarette package with a hinged lid).
  • the various parts of the blank 28 have been marked, where possible, with accented reference numbers equal to the reference numbers distinguishing the corresponding walls of the outer container 4.
  • the collar 22 is obtained starting from a flat blank 29 having a substantially rectangular shape and being of a known type (namely of the type commonly used to make a collar of a rigid cigarette package with a hinged lid).
  • a flat blank 29 having a substantially rectangular shape and being of a known type (namely of the type commonly used to make a collar of a rigid cigarette package with a hinged lid).
  • the various parts of the blank 29 have been marked, where possible, with accented reference numbers equal to the reference numbers distinguishing the corresponding walls of the collar 22.
  • the inner container 3 is obtained starting from a flat blank 30 having a substantially elongated rectangular shape.
  • the various parts of the blank 30 have been marked, where possible, with accented reference numbers equal to the reference numbers distinguishing the corresponding walls of the inner container 3.
  • FIG 10 an alternative cigarette package 1 is illustrated, wherein the front wall 23 of the collar 31 has a through opening that is longitudinally aligned with the print 27 of the front wall 16 of the inner container 3 and through which the print 27 of the front wall 16 of the inner container 3 is visible when the lid 9 is in the open position (namely when the inner container 3 is in the extracted position) .
  • the print 27 juts out from an upper edge of the collar 22 when the lid 9 is in the open position (and therefore, is visible because it is completely outside of the collar 22), whereas in the embodiment illustrated in Figures 10-15 the print 27 is always inside the perimeter defined by the collar 22 and becomes visible through the through window 31 of the collar 22 when the lid 9 is in the open position.
  • the print 27 is immediately under a lower edge of the window 31 of the front wall 23 of the collar 22 to jut out from the lower edge of the window 31 following the lifting of the inner container 3.
  • the "U"-shaped recess 25 of the front wall 23 of the collar 22 is arranged asymmetrically on a side of the front wall 23 itself so as to be located next to the window 31.
  • FIGs 12 and 13 a front portion of the cigarette package 1 of Figure 10 is illustrated schematically, with the removal of the outer container 4 and of the lid 9: note how the print 27 impressed on the front wall 16 of the inner container 3 is completely covered by the front wall 23 of the collar 22 and is relatively far from the through window 31 when the lid 9 is in the closed position (namely when the inner container 3 is in the lowered position) as illustrated in Figure 12 and is, instead, arranged at the through opening 31 of the front wall 23 of the collar 22 (namely, it is visible through the window 31) when the lid 9 is in the open position (namely when the inner container 3 is in the extracted position) as illustrated in Figure 13 .
  • the blank 28 used to make the outer container 4 and the lid 9 of the cigarette package 1 of Figure 10 is completely identical to the blank 28 illustrated in Figure 7 .
  • the blank 29 used to make the collar 22 of the cigarette package 1 of Figure 10 (note the presence of the window 31) is illustrated.
  • the blank 30 used to make the inner container 3 of the cigarette package 1 of Figure 10 (the inner container 3 better illustrated in Figure 11 ) is illustrated.
  • the blank 30 has a panel 16' which is arranged in the middle and makes up the front wall 16 of the inner container 3 (note the presence of the print 27), two panels 18' which are arranged on opposite sides of the panel 16', are separated from the panel 16' itself by two longitudinal folding lines 32, and make up the side walls 18 of the inner container 3, and two panels 17' which are arranged on opposite sides of the panels 18', are separated from the panels 18' themselves by two longitudinal folding lines 32, and together make up the rear wall 17 of the inner container 3 (namely, as illustrated in Figure 11 , the two panels 17' are arranged one next to the other in order to make up together the rear wall 17). Furthermore, the blank 30 has a panel 15' which is arranged under the panel 16', is separated from the panel 16' itself by a transverse folding line 33, and makes up the lower wall 15 of the inner container 3.
  • the blank 30 has two panels 20', each of which is arranged above a corresponding panel 17', is separated from panel 17' itself by a transverse folding line 33, and makes up part of the connection tab 20 of the lifting mechanism 19. Finally, the blank 30 has two panels 21', each of which are arranged above a corresponding panel 20', is separated from panel 20' itself by a transverse folding line 33, and makes up part of the reinforcement tab 21 of the lifting mechanism 19.
  • the embodiment illustrated in Figures 16 and 17 differs from the embodiment illustrated in Figures 10-15 only in the number and the shape of the windows 31 and of the prints 27: in fact, in the embodiment illustrated in Figures 16 and 17 two partially-circular-shaped windows 31 are provided arranged one above the other, and therefore two prints 27 arranged one above the other on the panel 16' of the blank 30 are provided.
  • the embodiment illustrated in Figures 18 and 19 differs from the embodiment illustrated in Figures 10-15 only in the shape of the window 31, obtained by a punching means that makes a plurality of through openings of the shape of alphanumeric characters, and consequently for the shape of the print 27.
  • FIG. 20 , 21 and 22 differs from the embodiment illustrated in Figures 10-15 only for the fact that the longitudinal edges of the outer container 4 and of the lid 9 are rounded instead of being straight. Note that in the embodiment of Figures 21 and 22 as the lid 9 is being opened the print 27 varies, as made progressively visible through the window 31.
  • the inner container 3 has a cross section having substantially the same size (other than a minimum clearance, negligible in first approximation, to allow sliding) as the cross section of the outer container 4; therefore the inner container 3 entirely occupies (that is, without appreciable free spaces) the inner volume of the outer container 4.
  • the inner container 3 has a smaller cross section than the cross section of the outer container 4 and, consequently, the inner volume of the outer container 4 is not completely occupied by the inner container 3 but a substantial portion of the inner volume (in the order of 20-50% of the inner volume) is free (namely, not occupied by the inner container 3).
  • the rear wall 17 of the inner container 3 could be spaced apart from the rear wall 7 of the outer container 4 (by at least 2.5-3 mm), so as to define, inside the outer container 4, a chamber which is arranged next to the inner container 3 and houses the lifting mechanism 19 (preferably shaped in a different way from what is illustrated in the attached figures, for example as described in Italian patent application BO2014A000576 ); said chamber is not occupied by the inner container 3 and is intended to house only the lifting mechanism 19, which allows the lifting or the lowering of the group 2 of cigarettes when the lid 9 is being opened or closed, respectively.
  • the lifting mechanism 19 preferably shaped in a different way from what is illustrated in the attached figures, for example as described in Italian patent application BO2014A000576 .
  • the lifting mechanism 19 has only one connection tab 20, which is integral to the rear wall 13 of the lid 9; according to alternative and completely equivalent embodiments not illustrated, the lifting mechanism 19 has a greater number of connection tabs 20 that may be integral to the upper wall 11 and/or to the front wall 12 of the lid 9.
  • the connection tab 20 is flexible (instead of being rigid), and therefore entirely free to deform without constraints (and of course devoid of the reinforcement tab 21); for example, the connection tab 20 could have a certain (high) number of transverse weakening lines close one to the other, which gives a high flexibility to the connection tab 20.
  • the cigarette package 1 described above has numerous advantages.
  • the cigarette package 1 described above allows to make certain information (contained in the print 27) visible only when the lid 9 is being opened and with " dynamic " ways (namely with a display which changes from the degree of variation of the opening of the lid 9) that captures the attention of the smoker (namely the smoker is unintentionally " forced " to pay particular attention to the information contained in the print 27 as a result of the dynamic unveiling of the print 27 itself).
  • the cigarette package 1 described above is simple to manufacture even in an existing packing machine (that must be subjected to a few, not too invasive, modifications).
  • the outer container 4, the lid 9 and the collar 22 (therefore the corresponding blanks 28 and 29) are completely identical to the outer container, to the lid and to the collar (therefore to the corresponding blanks) of a standard type, rigid cigarette package with a hinged lid and the inner container 3 can be obtained by folding the blank 29 around the group 2 of cigarettes in the unit normally intended for inserting a coupon, with simple changes to the unit itself.
  • the shape of such a cigarette package 1 may be integrally used also for producing a packet for other types of smoking articles (such as, for example, cigars, electronic cigarettes, charging cartridges for electronic cigarettes, pieces of tobacco for electronic cigarettes).
  • other types of smoking articles such as, for example, cigars, electronic cigarettes, charging cartridges for electronic cigarettes, pieces of tobacco for electronic cigarettes.
