Abstract

An adjustable central latch for the leaves of double-leaf fire doors and door, designed for the purpose of preventing the door from opening due to expansion in case of fire, and that is, at the same time, adjustable.

Description

    OBJECT OF THE INVENTION
  • The present invention discloses an adjustable central latch for the leaves of double-leaf fire doors and door, designed for the purpose of preventing the door from opening due to expansion in case of fire, and that is, at the same time, adjustable.
  • In the Technical Sector, the invention falls within the construction sector, specifically the fabrication of double-leaf fire doors with steel frames.
  • BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
  • In the state of the art, different closing methods for double-leaf doors are well known, but they present the drawback that they do not allow the occupants of the enclosure to exit in case of evacuation, and they are not completely adjustable.
  • Also, it should be noted, in accordance with the fire resistance tests EN 1634-1: 2014, the door that is tested cannot be locked with a key, which prevents the addition of another force against the deformation of the door in case of fire. For this reason, this type of lock must be added as safety elements, because these fire resistance tests for this type of door are crucial for their quality. It is also important to explain that the design of a fire door is based on mechanical strength and stability in response to fire, and this design must take into account that all elements of the door must adapt to the conditions in which it is put into service, as its incorrect installation could negate the fire-containment characteristics of the door. The optimum way of altering the design of this type of door is therefore to use elements that are adjustable and that therefore allow better adjustment when the door is installed at a worksite.
  • There are locking devices for door leaves, such as invention ES 2446 346 T3 , which is a vertical bolt that locks the passive leaf of a double-leaf door, but that has the drawback that it does not provide fire containment and is not adjustable.
  • DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
  • A first object of the invention consists of a latch according to claim one. Specifically, it discloses a latch, piece, profile, or elongated elements such as a bar with a cross-section with a first straight side and a second straight side adjacent to one end of the first straight side, with said second straight side forming an angle greater than 0° and less than or equal to 90° with said first straight side, and also with at least one elongated hole in the first straight side.
  • A second object of the invention is a double-leaf door according to claim 7, and that includes the first latch that is the object of the present invention screwed to the door.
  • The latch that is the object of the invention applies to double-leaf fire doors of the type in which each leaf comprises a step on one side and an extension of the leaf on the opposite side, such that said first straight side is screwed to the step of the door leaves, allowing for the adjustment of the position of the latch with respect to the extensions of the leaves. This means, and in the case of deformation caused by thermal expansion of the fire door, the later hooking of the latch is achieved with these extensions, preventing the door from opening. The latch may be positioned on one or on both leaves of the door.
  • The latch may, based on the previous cross-section, form different cross-sections, such as an L-shaped cross-section with a 90° angle between the first and second sides, a cross-section in which the first and second side form an acute angle, or a J-shaped cross-section which includes a third straight side adjacent to the second side. In all of these, it is the first straight side, which comprises the elongated holes for screwing the latch to the step of the door, which is longer than the other sides of the latch. This shape allows adjustment of the position of the latch, positioned in the central zone of the double-leaf fire door, specifically in the step zone where the latch will latch with the door extension. This shape allows the door leaves to hook together in case of expansion.
  • This latch is adjustable, in both the horizontal and vertical planes, which allows the door installation to be adapted at the worksite. In a double-leaf door, each leaf must occupy the space that corresponds to it in the door assembly, so that the space between the leaves is as small as possible and to prevent the door from opening in case of fire. The latch is a vertical bar with the shape described above, and that runs along the entire height of the leaf, either as a continuous or discontinuous element.
  • The action of fire on a steel door causes the central zone of the door to expand so that the door tends to open at the area of the leaf extensions. To counteract this deformation, the present invention was conceived such that the latch hooks with the extension of the leaf when it expands. This solves the problem of the door opening, so the fire sector would remain blocked.
  • The central zone of a double-leaf fire door is designed so that every millimeter of the elements that make up the door has been studied for the functions that they perform. As a result, it is known that the lock slide must enter the leaf three millimeters to prevent the door from opening. In the case of fire, this central zone of the door expands and warps, and the door tends to open, pulling the slide out of place. Furthermore, the clearance between the two door leaves, which may vary up to three millimeters from one door to another due to the tolerances of the materials, must also be taken into account. The latch that is the object of this invention was designed based on these parameters. This latch is positioned on the steps of the door, and the distance from the latch to the extension of the door leaf must be three millimeters, which is how far the slide inserts into the door. This ensures that the latch functions by hooking onto the extensions of the leaves. To guarantee that this distance is always correct, even if the clearance between the leaves differs from one door to another, the latch has been designed as an adjustable piece, which makes it ideal for this type of door and the function that the latch performs in them.
  • The latch is screwed on the central edge of the leaf, specifically on the step on the leaf, so that it is hidden from the outside of the door and thus does not alter the alignment of the leaves. The holes have been designed prearranged for anchor screws based on the need to adjust the latch. The mounting holes have an elongated shape and are larger than the diameter of a screw, although they are obviously smaller than the head of the screws, so that when the piece is installed, it is possible to adjust both the height and width at which it is positioned. Once the optimum position of the latch has been established, it is fixed permanently by screwing it on the central edge of the door leaf. The latch may be a continuous bar that is screwed to the leaf along its entire height, or a discontinuous bar: in both cases, it occupies the same position and functions exactly the same.
  • The latch will preferably be made of a material with a higher resistance to deformation than the material of the extensions of the door leaves.
  • DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
  • To provide a better understanding of this description of the invention, and forming an integral part of it, the following drawings are provided, which represent the object of the invention for the purposes of illustration, but not limitation.
    • Figure 1 .- Shows a horizontal cross-section view of the central flat zone of a fire door (8) on which the adjustable central latch (1) for double-leaf fire doors, which is shaped like the letter J, is screwed using adjustment holes (9) on the steps (6 and 7), with the adjustment (15) based on the clearance of the central zone of the door (8) provided by the door leaves (2 and 3) such that the extensions (4 and 5) of the door leaves (2 and 3) are hooked with the adjustable central latch (1) of the double-leaf fire door in the case of deformation caused by expansion due to the heat of the fire.
    • Figure 2 .- Shows a plan view of the adjustable central latch (1) for double-leaf fire doors, and its corresponding first straight side (10), where the adjustment holes (9) are located, which allow for the adjustment (15) of the piece when it is installed.
    • Figure 3 .- Shows a second embodiment of the invention, which shows a plan view of the adjustable central latch for double-leaf fire doors (11), and its corresponding first straight side (12), where the adjustment holes (9) are located, which allow for the adjustment (15) of the piece when it is installed.
    • Figure 4 .- Shows a third embodiment of the invention, which shows a plan view of the adjustable central latch for double-leaf fire doors (13), and its corresponding first straight side (14), where the adjustment holes (9) are located, which allow for the adjustment (15) of the piece when it is installed.
    • Figures 5A and 5B - Show two horizontal cross-section views of the central flat zone of a fire door on which the adjustable central latch for double-leaf fire doors is screwed using adjustment holes on a single leaf of the door, with adjustment based on the clearance of the central zone of the door provided by the door leaves such that the one of the extensions of the door leaves is hooked with the adjustable central latch of the fire door in the case of deformation caused by expansion due to the heat of the fire.
    PREFERRED EMBODIMENT OF THE INVENTION
  • The invention applies to double-leaf fire doors, in which the adjustable central latch (1) for double-leaf fire doors is screwed to the leaves, specifically on the steps (6, 7) that the leaves have in the central flat zone (8) of the door. The adjustable central latch (1) for double-leaf fire doors has been designed to latch into the extensions (4, 5) of the leaves (2, 3) in case of deformation caused by increased temperature, thus preventing the door from opening in case of fire.
  • The adjustable central latch (1) for double-leaf fire doors has a J-shaped cross section, which allows the latch to latch into the extension (4, 5) of the leaf (2, 3) correctly in case of deformation caused by thermal expansion, because it is secured to the leaf with the help of adjustment holes (9), allowing for the adjustment (15) of the latch to its correct position on the leaf (2, 3) of the door (8). This J-shaped cross-section comprises a first straight side (10) on which the elongated holes (9) for the screwing thereof to the leaf, a second straight side, shorter than the first side (10), and forming an angle of 90° with it, and a third straight side adjacent to the second side, also with a 90° angle, are incorporated.
  • A second embodiment has a different shape from the first, because the cross-section or plan view of the latch forms an acute angle (11), such that it allows it to likewise perform the function of hooking the latch (1) with the leaf (2, 3) and its adjustment (15) where the first straight side (12) also has the adjustment holes (9) for the screws.
  • A third embodiment has a different shape from the first and the second, because the cross-section is formed by a first straight side (14) and a second straight side that form a right or 90° angle with each other, such that it allows it to likewise perform the function of hooking the piece and its adjustment (15) where the first straight side (14) also has the adjustment holes (9) for the screws.
  • As mentioned, the invention also discloses a fire door (8) with two leaves (2, 3), with each leaf (2, 3) comprising a step (6, 7) on one side and an extension (4, 5) of the leaf (2, 3) on the opposite side, and with at least one of the steps (6, 7), and preferably both, having a latch (1) according to the description above, that is secured to the step (6, 7) by a screw inserted into the at least one hole (9) in the latch (1). The width of the elongated hole (9) of the latch (1) is greater than the diameter of the screw.
  • Figures 5A and 5B show how in an alternative construction of the latch, the latch does not necessarily have to be positioned on both of the door leaves, but rather that it may suffice to install the latch on only one of the two leaves of the door.
  • Having sufficiently described the characteristics of the invention, as well as the way in which it is put into practice, more extensive explanation is not considered to be necessary for any expert in the subject to understand its scope and the advantages that it provides, with the indication that within its essential characteristics, it may be put into practice in other embodiments that differ in regard to the details of the embodiment provided as an example, and that likewise provide the same protection, provided that its fundamental principle is not altered, changed, or modified.
