Abstract
Description
- The present invention relates to a counterpart to be used with door locks, more specifically the present invention relates to a latch bolt plate for being employed in a strike plate assembly.
- Door locks are generally paired with strike plates to be mounted on the door frames. A basic strike plate is planar, and is provided with two openings, one thereof is formed for receiving the latch bolt, and the other one for receiving the dead bolt of the lock. A lock with a certain distance between its dead bolt and latch bolt should be packed and sold along with a respective strike plate having the same distance between its two said openings. Thus, the producers must provide strike plates of various sizes to be packed and sold with locks with different distances between their latch bolts and dead bolts. This variability is an issue causing difficulties in logistics and therefore increases the costs in many aspects including storage, transport and spare parts related to this industry.
- Also a door frame on which the strike plate is to be mounted, should be provided with two pits, one for receiving the dead bolt and the other one being for receiving the latch bolt. The strike plate should be carefully mounted onto the frame, such that the two openings of the strike plate precisely correspond to said two pits. Especially the latch bolt pit is difficult to be carved evenly because of the detailed and angled geometry of the latch bolt; and the inner surfaces thereof which are visible when the door is open, are difficult to form optically appealing. Mostly, a further accessory (e.g. a cover made of molded polymeric material) is mounted to the frame before the strike plate, in order to cover said surfaces, and this causes an increment in the material and labor costs at preparation of a door with a lock.
- Primary object of the present invention is to overcome the abovementioned shortcomings of the prior art.
- Another object of the present invention is provision of a latch bolt plate which is functional without necessitating a latch bolt pit on a respective door frame.
- Another object of present invention is provision of a strike plate system which is easily adjustable to different locks having different distances between their dead bolt / latch bolt pairs.
- A further object of the present invention is decreasing the costs related with
- The present invention proposes a latch bolt plate having an out-of-plane protrusion, such that when the latch bolt plate is mounted to a frame of a door to engage a corresponding latch bolt of a lock mounted to a panel hinged to the door, and such that when the door is closed, the protrusion faces the latch bolt at a side surface of the latch bolt which side surface being mainly parallel to a main plane corresponding to the panel. The present invention further proposes a strike plate assembly comprising such latch bolt plate.
- The figures, whose brief explanations are herewith provided, are solely intended for providing a better understanding of the present invention and are as such not intended to define the scope of protection or the context in which said scope is to be interpreted in the absence of the description.
-
Figure 1 is a front view of a prior art strike plate and non-customizable distance (D) thereon corresponding to the distance (X) between a dead bolt and a neighboring latch bolt. -
Figure 2 is an exploded perspective view showing the relation between the prior art strike plate shown inFig. 1 and a door frame with latch bolt pit and dead bold pit arranged in accordance with the distance D. -
Figure 3 is a side view of a lock having a dead bolt and a latch bolt wherein the distance between them is indicated as X. -
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the latch bolt plate according to the present invention. -
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the dead bolt plate to be used with a latch bolt plate according to the present invention. -
Figure 6 shows arrangement of the positions of the latch bolt plate and the dead bolt plate with respect to each other, in order to adjusting the strike plate assembly according to the present invention in accordance with various locks having different distances (Z, Z', Z") between respective dead bolt and latch bolt pairs. -
Figure 7 exemplifies basic arrangement of a strike plate assembly according to the present invention onto a door frame a generic dead bolt pit, without necessitating carving of a latch bolt pit. -
Figure 8 shows an exploded perspective view of a door provided with the strike plate assembly according to the present invention. - Referring now the figures outlined before, the present invention proposes a latch bolt plate (10) having an out-of-plane protrusion (14), such that when the latch bolt plate (10) is mounted to a frame (7) of a door (19) to engage a corresponding latch bolt (6) of a lock (4) mounted to a panel (1) hinged to the door (19), and such that when the door is closed, the protrusion (14) faces the latch bolt (6) at a side surface (102) of the latch bolt (6) which side surface (102) being mainly parallel to a main plane (101) corresponding to the panel (1).
- With the latch bolt plate according to the present invention, it is no more required to form a latch bolt pit (12) on the door frame (7) for receiving the latch bolt (6) for enabling the closure of a door (19). When the door is at a closed position, the protrusion (14) on the latch bolt plate (10) provides an obstacle by abutting on the side surface (102) of the latch bolt (6) to prevent forced movement of the panel (1) to an open position. This provides an easy, rapid and thus low cost arrangement of the latch bolt plate (10) onto the frame (7) in terms of labor cost and minimized destruction on the frame (7) (i.e. minimized loss of frame material) at on-site installation of the latch bolt plate (10) onto a frame (7).
- Furthermore, door frame manufacturing process is also facilitated by introduction of the latch bolt plate according to the present invention. Frames (7) to be used with the latch bolt plate (10) according to the present invention can be manufactured with an eliminated step of carving out a latch bolt pit (12) at a respective frame factory. Elimination of said process step reduces the production costs in terms of production time and labor costs. With the latch bolt plate (10) according to the present invention, the frame (7) would be also optically more appealing by not being carved. Also the necessity of a further accessory (e.g. a cover made of molded polymeric material) for hiding any unevenness on inner surfaces of the latch bolt pit (12), is eliminated along with its respective costs.
- The present invention further proposes a strike plate assembly comprising the above described latch bolt plate (10). The strike plate assembly further comprises a dead bolt plate (11) mechanically engageable with the latch bolt plate (10). One of the latch bolt plate (10) or the dead bolt plate (11) comprises an adjustment protrusion (18) and the other comprises a set of aligned adjustment holes (15) to engage with said adjustment protrusion (18). The distance between an adjustment hole (15) and the protrusion (14) of the latch bolt plate (10) is different for at least two of said adjustment holes (15). Thus, the extent of overlapping between the latch bolt plate (10) and the dead bolt plate (11) (and accordingly, the distance between an adjustment hole (15) and the protrusion (14) of the latch bolt plate (10)), can be varied in accordance with selection of adjustment hole (15) to be engaged with the adjustment protrusion (18). Hence, with the strike plate assembly according to the present invention, the distance between the openings for receiving dead bolt and latch bolt of a lock can be accorded for locks having different distances between their respective dead bolt and latch bolt pairs.
- The strike plate assembly according to the present invention preferably further comprises a plurality of sets of aligned adjustment holes, at least two of said sets being mainly parallel to each other; and a plurality of adjustment protrusions at a number corresponding to the number of said sets. This feature provides an even more facilitated robust arrangement in coupling the latch bolt plate (10) with the dead bolt plate (11).
- The set of aligned adjustment holes (15) is preferably mainly parallel to an axis (y) corresponding to a theoretical line definable with the dead bolt (5) and latch bolt (6) of a respective lock (4) to be coupled with the strike plate assembly. Hence, the distance between the protrusion (14) and a dead bolt receiving opening provided on the dead bolt plate (11) can be accorded to different distances (shown as Z, Z', Z" on
Fig.6 ) between dead bolt (5) / latch bolt (6) pairs of various locks (4) of different standards, thanks to the strike plate assembly according to the present invention. The strike plate assembly according to the present invention can be used (sold, mounted and coupled) with various size locks, e.g. with a product series wherein each model has a different distance between respective latch bolt/dead bolt pairs. These advantages also facilitate the commerce, especially in terms of simplification and low err in corresponding logistic activities. - In a preferred embodiment of the strike plate assembly according to the present invention, the latch bolt plate (10) is provided with the set of aligned adjustment holes (15), and the dead bolt plate (11) is provided with the adjustment protrusion (18). The montage of the strike plate assembly onto a frame (7) can be performed by following the below activities:
- Determination of a position on the frame (7) of a door (19) for installing the latch bolt plate (10), said position being in accordance with that of a latch bolt (6) of a lock (4) at the closed position of the door (19);
- Fixation of the latch bolt plate (10) onto the frame (7) through a screw hole (16) provided on the latch bolt plate (10) (preferably, through at least one screw hole provided at an upper side of the latch bolt plate (10), when mounted);
- Determination of the distance (X) between the latch bolt (6) and the dead bolt (5) of the lock;
- Selection of the adjustment hole(s) (15) to be engaged with the adjustment protrusion(s); such that the strike plate assembly fits the lock (4) by arranging the distance (Z, Z', or Z") between openings on the latch bolt plate (10) and the dead bolt plate (11) for receiving the latch bolt (6) and the dead bolt (5), respectively;
- Accordingly engaging the adjustment hole(s) (15) with the adjustment protrusion(s) (18); (this step preferably is such that: coupling of the adjustment protrusion(s) (18) on the dead bolt plate (11) with the latch bolt plate (10) adjustment hole(s) (15) selected in accordance with the distance between latch bolt (6) and dead bolt (5) of a respective lock);
- Fixation of the dead bolt plate (11) onto the frame (7) through a screw hole (17) provided on the dead bolt plate (11).
- Thus the following objects are achieved by the present invention:
- overcoming the abovementioned shortcomings of the prior art,
- provision of:
- a latch bolt plate which is functional without necessitating a latch bolt pit on a respective door frame, and
- a strike plate system which is easily adjustable to different locks having different distances between their dead bolt / latch bolt pairs.
