-
Fig. 1 shows adownhole completion device 1 configured to be mounted as part of a welltubular metal structure 2 in aborehole 30. Thedownhole completion device 1 comprises ametal housing 3 enclosing a closedspace 4 and anelectrical component 5, such as acoil 32, arranged in the space inside the metal housing. Themetal housing 3 is filled with aliquid 41 having a first volume V1 of 1 bar at 20°C. Themetal housing 3 has afirst housing section 6 andsecond housing section 7. Thefirst housing section 6 has a first thickness t1 and thesecond housing section 7 has a second thickness t2, and the second thickness is smaller than the first thickness so that the second housing section is more flexible than the first housing section. When the temperature in the well increases, the pressure inside the closedspace 4 increases accordingly. This causes thesecond housing section 7 to bulge radially outwards into the inside of the welltubular metal structure 2, as shown inFig. 2 , to a projected state of the second housing section in which theliquid 41 has a second volume V2 which is larger than the first volume. When the pressure decreases, thesecond housing section 7 bulges radially inwards to a retracted state in which theliquid 41 has a third volume V3 which is smaller than the first volume, as shown inFig. 3 . The electrical component is hereby protected from any temperature and pressure changes that naturally occur downhole in a well during production, fracturing, aciding, gas lifting or other activities taking place downhole during the service life of a well. - Known sensors are filled with gas, such as air, and during insertion of the well tubular metal structure, the sensors are exposed to a lot of bumps, and often, the sensors no longer work when the well is completed because they could not withstand these bumps. By the present invention, the liquid inside the
downhole completion device 1 surrounds the electrical component and thereby protects the electronics from these bumps during installation of the well tubular metal structure since the liquid fills out the space and has a substantially dampening effect when such bumps and shakings occur. - The
second housing section 7 may be made of metal or a non-metallic material. Thesecond housing section 7 is inFigs. 1-3 a separate part fastened to thefirst housing section 6, and inFig. 4 , thesecond housing section 7 is made as a thinner part of themetal housing 3 and not as a separate part. InFig. 4 , the second thickness is less than 50% of the first thickness, and thesecond housing section 7 is made of the same material as thefirst housing section 6. Thedownhole completion device 1 extends through a wall of the welltubular metal structure 2 and partly projects from theouter face 28 of the welltubular metal structure 2. Thedownhole completion device 1 has alongitudinal extension 15 being perpendicular to alongitudinal axis 12 and extends radially from the longitudinal axis. Furthermore, theelectrical component 5 is a sensor, such as an anemometer having ahot wire 17, extending from themetal housing 3 into theborehole 30 and is thus in connection with the well fluid. Themetal housing 3 has anouter face 8, and the outer face is provided with athread 9. Themetal housing 3 comprises a fillingnozzle 19 or filling plug for filling thespace 4 with liquid, such as silicone, grease or a similar liquid suitable for electrical components. - In
Fig. 5 , theelectrical component 5 is a piezoelectric element 29 which also functions as acommunication unit 18. Thedownhole completion device 1 further comprises anenergy harvesting unit 22 functioning as apower supply 10 for supplying power to theelectrical component 5. Thedownhole completion device 1 further comprises acontrol unit 23 having astorage unit 24 for storing data, e.g. from asensor 25 arranged outside thedownhole completion device 1, or for controlling the communication from thecommunication unit 18. Thus, theelectrical component 5 may be connected with thecommunication unit 18, theenergy harvesting unit 22, thepower supply 10, thecontrol unit 23 or thestorage unit 24. Theenergy harvesting unit 22 may obtain energy from adownhole tool 16, and thedownhole tool 16 may also communicate with thedownhole completion device 1. - In
Fig. 6 , theelectrical component 5 is a sensor having access via aline 27 to measure a condition, such as temperature or pressure, of the well fluid in theborehole 30. Theelectrical component 5 may also be a strain gauge. - In
Fig. 5 , adownhole completion system 100 is shown comprising a welltubular metal structure 2 arranged in aborehole 30 of a well 20. The welltubular metal structure 2 has alongitudinal axis 12 and awall 21. Thedownhole completion system 100 further comprises adownhole completion device 1 mounted as part of the welltubular metal structure 2 on anouter face 28 of the well tubular metal structure. Thedownhole completion device 1 may also be mounted on aninner face 14 of the welltubular metal structure 2. InFigs. 5 and6 , themetal housing 3 of thedownhole completion device 1 and theouter face 8 of the welltubular metal structure 2 enclose the space. In this way, theelectrical component 5 being the piezoelectric element 29 abuts and has direct contact to theouter face 8 of the welltubular metal structure 2 in order to communicate and/or harvest energy. - In
Fig. 7 , the welltubular metal structure 2 of thedownhole completion system 100 comprises anannular barrier 50. Theannular barrier 50 comprises atubular metal part 51 for mounting as part of the welltubular metal structure 2. Thetubular metal part 51 has afirst expansion opening 52 and anouter face 53. Theannular barrier 50 further comprises anexpandable metal sleeve 54 surrounding thetubular metal part 51 and having aninner face 55 facing the tubular metal part and anouter face 56 facing a wall of theborehole 30. Eachend 57 of theexpandable metal sleeve 54 is connected with thetubular metal part 51, thereby defining anannular space 58 between theinner face 55 of the expandable metal sleeve and the tubular metal part. Theexpandable metal sleeve 54 is expanded by letting pressurised fluid into the annular space through thefirst expansion opening 52 and further through anexpansion unit 59. Astrain gauge 47 is mounted on theexpandable metal sleeve 54 and is electrically connected with theelectrical component 5 inside thespace 4 for measuring the expansion of the expandable metal sleeve of theannular barrier 50. Thedownhole completion device 1 further comprises apower supply 10 for powering theelectrical component 5. - By fluid or well fluid is meant any kind of fluid that may be present in oil or gas wells downhole, such as natural gas, oil, oil mud, crude oil, water, etc. By gas is meant any kind of gas composition present in a well, completion, or open hole, and by oil is meant any kind of oil composition, such as crude oil, an oil-containing fluid, etc. Gas, oil, and water fluids may thus all comprise other elements or substances than gas, oil, and/or water, respectively.
- By a casing or well tubular metal structure is meant any kind of pipe, tubing, tubular, liner, string etc. used downhole in relation to oil or natural gas production.
