DETAILED DESCRIPTION
[0009] At the outset, it should be appreciated that like drawing numbers appearing in different drawing views identify identical, or functionally similar, structural elements. Furthermore, it is understood that this invention is not limited only to the particular embodiments, methodology, materials and modifications described herein, and as such may, of course, vary. It is also understood that the terminology used herein is for the purpose of describing particular aspects only, and is not intended to limit the scope of the present invention, which is limited only by the appended claims.
[0010] Unless defined otherwise, all technical and scientific terms used herein have the same meaning as commonly understood to one of ordinary skill in the art to which this invention belongs. Although any methods, devices or materials similar or equivalent to those described herein can be used in the practice or testing of the invention, the following example methods, devices, and materials are now described.
[0011] The following description is made with reference to Figures 1 -4. Figure 1 is a perspective view of a combustion engine and transmission showing an engine accessory assembly according to an example aspect. Figure 2 is a side view of the engine accessory assembly of Figure 1. Figure 3 is an exploded perspective view of the engine accessory assembly of Figure 2. Figure 4 is an exploded perspective view of the engine accessory assembly of Figure 2.
[0012] The figures show engine 100 with engine accessory assembly 102 including motor generator unit 104, vacuum pump 106, transmission oil pump 108, engine oil pump 1 10 including bracket 1 12 and filter 1 14, and water pump 1 16. Also shown is off-axis air conditioning compressor 1 18 connected by belt 120. In some example embodiments (not shown), motor generator unit 104 is an alternator. The shaft driven accessories are drivingly connected by shaft 122. Shaft 122 includes splines 124 for drivingly engaging the engine accessories as described below. Shaft 122 is supported by a bearing in motor generator unit 104 and a bearing disposed in housing 126 fixed to engine oil pump 1 10. As can be seen from the figures, the bearings are disposed at opposite distal ends of shaft 122.
[0013] The following description is made with reference to Figures 5 and 6. Figure 5 is an exploded detail perspective view of a motor generator unit to shaft connection according to an example aspect. Figure 6 is an exploded detail perspective view of the motor generator unit to shaft connection of Figure 5. Shaft 122 includes drive connection flange 128 with hexagonal protrusion 130 for driving connection with recess 132 in motor generator pulley 134. Bolts 136 secure the flange to the motor generator pulley and the hexagonal drive rotationally connects the components. In the example embodiment shown in Figures 5 and 6, protrusion 130 and recess 132 are hexagonal, but other polygonal shapes are possible, including but not limited to, triangular, rectangular, pentagonal, or octagonal. Similarly, although the protrusion is shown in flange 128 and the recess in pulley 134, an opposite configuration with a protrusion in the pulley and a recess in the flange is also possible.
[0014] The following description is made with reference to Figures 7-10. Figure 7 is an exploded detail perspective view of an accessory-to-accessory connection according to an example aspect. Figure 8 is an exploded detail perspective view of the accessory-to-accessory connection of Figure 7. Figure 9 is an exploded detail perspective view of an accessory-to- accessory connection according to an example aspect. Figure 10 is an exploded detail perspective view of the accessory-to-accessory of Figure 9. Each of the accessories is connected to the assembly using a polygonal fit and fasteners. That is, water pump 1 16 includes hexagonal protrusion 138 and vacuum pump 106 includes hexagonal recess 140 so that, when the mating accessories are assembled, they are rotationally fixed. In the example embodiment shown in Figures 8-10, the polygonal fit is a hexagon although other fits including triangle, square, pentagon, or octogon are possible. Fasteners 142 may be screws or bolts.
[0015] Transmission oil pump 108 and vacuum pump 106 include a same connection so that either may be installed onto engine oil pump 1 10, depending on application. That is, for applications not requiring a transmission oil pump (i.e., manual transmission or dry double clutch transmission), the vacuum pump can be fixed directly to the oil pump. Similarly, some applications (i.e., non-turbocharged) may not require a vacuum pump. In this manner, the engine accessory assembly is adaptable to a variety of engine and transmission applications.
[0016] The following description is made with reference to Figures 1 -2 and 1 1. Figure 1 1 is a detail perspective view of the accessory drive of Figure 2. Radially offset air conditioner compressor 1 18 is connected by belt 120 to motor generator unit pulley 134 mounted on a shaft of motor generator unit 104.
