The method 600 may then comprise electrically connecting 650 a surface memory device 177 with the sensor system, retrieving 655 the impact acceleration data from the downhole memory device 558, and storing 660 the impact acceleration data on the surface memory device 177.
  • the method 600 may comprise assessing 665 the risk of damage to the tool string 110 by impact acceleration forces, such as by comparing the acceleration caused by the impact to a predetermined level of acceleration that the tool string 110 can operationally withstand. If it is determined 665 that the acceleration caused by the impact is at or near the predetermined level, the impact may be repeated by again applying 610 the tension to the tool string 110, including ultimately triggering 615 the jarring tool again impart the impact to the tool string 110.
  • the method 600 may also comprises detecting 680 the greater acceleration during the second, greater impact, via the accelerometer(s) 526, and storing 685 impact acceleration data generated by the accelerometer(s) 526 on the memory device 558.
  • the detected 680 and stored 685 data may also include data from one or more of the environment sensors 560, 562, 564, 568.
  • the tool string 110 may further comprise one or more electrical conductors 145, 205, 505, 155 extending between the jarring tool 200 and a wellsite surface 105.

  • a jarring tool operable for coupling within and generating an impact imparted to a downhole tool string
  • the jarring tool comprises: an upper housing comprising a first bore extending longitudinally therethrough; a lower housing comprising a second bore extending longitudinally therethrough; a shaft coupled with the lower housing and extending into the first bore of the upper housing, wherein the upper housing moves axially relative to the lower housing along the shaft; and a sensor system disposed within the second bore of the lower housing and comprising an accelerometer for detecting acceleration caused by an impact generated by movement of the upper housing away from the lower housing until corresponding impact features of the upper and lower housings collide.
  • the accelerometer may generate an output signal indicative of the acceleration of the second housing caused by the impact.
  • the sensor system may further comprise: a processor for processing the output signal; a memory for storing the output signal; and an electrical energy source for powering the accelerometer, the processor, and the memory.
  • the jarring tool may comprise no more than two interfaces for incorporation into the downhole tool string.
  • the no more than two interfaces may comprise: an upper interface at an upper end of the upper housing, wherein the upper interface comprises upper mechanical fastening means operable for coupling with an upper portion of the downhole tool string; and a lower interface at a lower end of the lower housing, wherein the lower interface comprises lower mechanical fastening means operable for coupling with a lower portion of the downhole tool string.
  • the upper interface may further comprise an upper electrical connector electrically connected with at least one component of the sensor system, wherein the upper electrical connector may be operable for electrically connecting the jarring tool with the upper portion of the downhole tool string.
  • the lower interface may further comprise a lower electrical connector operable for electrically connecting the jarring tool with the lower portion of the downhole tool string.
  • the jarring tool may further comprise one or more electrical conductors extending through the first and second bores and electrically connecting the upper and lower electrical connectors.
  • the jarring tool may further comprise a chassis disposed within the second bore of the lower housing, wherein the chassis may comprise a curved outer surface contacting a cooperatively curved inner surface of the second bore, and wherein the accelerometer may be coupled to the chassis.
  • the lower housing may comprise a shoulder extending radially into the second bore and contacting the chassis to maintain an axial position of the chassis within the lower housing.
  • the chassis may comprise a cavity containing an electrical energy source electrically connected with at least one component of the sensor system.
  • the jarring tool may further comprise a detector for detecting a quality of an operating environment of the jarring tool affecting the acceleration detected utilizing the accelerometer.
  • the detector may be a temperature sensor.
  • the present disclosure also introduces a method comprising: conveying a downhole tool string within a wellbore, wherein the downhole tool string comprises a jarring tool comprising: an upper housing connected to an upper portion of the downhole tool string; a lower housing connected to a lower portion of the downhole tool string; a shaft coupled to the lower housing and extending into the upper housing; and an accelerometer disposed within the lower housing; applying tension to the downhole tool string to trigger the jarring tool to impart an impact to the downhole tool string; and detecting acceleration with the accelerometer during the impact.
  • a jarring tool comprising: an upper housing connected to an upper portion of the downhole tool string; a lower housing connected to a lower portion of the downhole tool string; a shaft coupled to the lower housing and extending into the upper housing; and an accelerometer disposed within the lower housing; applying tension to the downhole tool string to trigger the jarring tool to impart an impact to the downhole tool string; and detecting acceleration with the accelerometer during the impact.
  • the jarring tool may further comprise a memory device disposed within the lower housing, and the method may further comprise storing impact acceleration data generated by the accelerometer on the memory device.
  • Triggering the jarring tool to impart the impact to the downhole tool string may cause the upper housing to move relative to the lower housing along the shaft until corresponding impact features of the upper and lower housings collide to generate the impact imparted to the downhole tool string.
  • the method may further comprise: electrically connecting a surface memory device with the jarring tool; and storing the impact acceleration data on the surface memory device. Electrically connecting the surface memory device with the jarring tool may be via one or more electrical conductors extending between the jarring tool and the surface memory device.
  • the tension may be a first tension and the impact may be a first impact
  • the method may further comprise: comparing the detected acceleration to a predetermined level of acceleration that a component of the lower portion of the downhole tool string can operationally withstand; and based on the comparison, applying one of the first tension and a second tension to the downhole tool string to trigger the jarring tool to impart a second impact to the downhole tool string, wherein the second tension is greater than the first tension.
  • the present disclosure also introduces an apparatus comprising: a jarring tool for coupling between upper and lower portions of a downhole tool string, the jarring tool comprising: an impact-generating section comprising: an upper housing connected to the upper portion of the downhole tool string; a lower housing connected to the lower portion of the downhole tool string; and a shaft coupled to the lower housing and extending into the upper housing, wherein, upon sufficient tension being applied across the downhole tool string, the upper housing moves relative to the lower housing along the shaft until corresponding impact features of the upper and lower housings collide and generate an impact imparted to the downhole tool string; and an impact-sensing section contained within a central bore of the lower housing, wherein the impact-sensing section comprises: a chassis disposed within the central bore: an accelerometer coupled with the chassis for generating an output signal indicative of acceleration caused by the impact; a processor carried with the chassis for processing the output signal; and a memory device carried with the chassis for storing the output signal or data generated by the processor.
  • the chassis may contact a shoulder protruding into the central bore to maintain an axial position of the chassis within the central bore.
  • the chassis may comprise: a longitudinal channel adapted for receiving an electrical conductor extending through the central bore; a support member having a first curved outer surface contacting a curved inner surface of the central bore; a receptacle portion having a second curved outer surface contacting the curved inner surface of the central bore; and a substantially planar surface between the support member and the receptacle portion.
  • the impact-sensing section may further comprise a battery retained within the receptacle portion, wherein the battery may be electrically connected with at least one of the accelerometer, the processor, and the memory device.
  • the impact-sensing section may further comprise an electronics board coupled to the substantially planar surface, wherein the processor and the memory device may be coupled with the electronics board.
  • the apparatus may further comprise: an upper electrical connector disposed within the upper housing and electrically connected to the upper portion of the downhole tool string; a lower electrical connector disposed within the lower housing and electrically connected to the lower portion of the downhole tool string; and one or more electrical conductors electrically connecting the upper and lower electrical connectors.

Claims (15)

  1. Appareil comprenant :
    un outil de battage (200) destiné à être couplé dans un train d'outil de fond de trou (110) et à produire un impact transmis à ce dernier, ledit outil de battage comprenant :
    un boîtier supérieur (242) comprenant un premier alésage (211) s'étendant longitudinalement à travers celui-ci ;
    un boîtier inférieur (265, 502) comprenant un second alésage (504) s'étendant longitudinalement à travers celui-ci ;
    un arbre (270) couplé au boîtier inférieur et s'étendant dans le premier alésage du boîtier supérieur, ledit boîtier supérieur se déplaçant axialement par rapport au boîtier inférieur le long de l'arbre ; et
    caractérisé en ce que l'outil de battage comprend en outre un système de capteur disposé dans le second alésage du boîtier inférieur et comprenant :
    un châssis (520) pouvant être inséré de façon à pouvoir coulisser dans le second alésage du boîtier inférieur, ledit châssis comprenant une surface externe incurvée en contact de manière coopérative avec une surface interne incurvée (508) du boîtier inférieur, ledit châssis étant retenue dans le second alésage par au moins un élément de fixation (532, 572) se mettant en prise avec le châssis et le boîtier inférieur, et ledit châssis ne supportant pas le poids d'une partie inférieure (150) du train d'outil de fond de trou couplé en dessous l'outil de battage ; et
    un accéléromètre (526) raccordé au châssis et destiné à produire un signal de sortie indicatif d'une accélération causée par un impact produit par un mouvement du boîtier supérieur loin du boîtier inférieur jusqu'à ce que les caractéristiques d'impact (490, 495) correspondantes des boîtiers supérieurs et inférieurs entrent en collision.
  2. Appareil selon la revendication 1, ledit système de capteur comprenant en outre :
    un processeur (556) destiné à traiter le signal de sortie ;
    une mémoire (558) destinée à stocker le signal de sortie ; et
    une source d'énergie électrique (524) destinée à alimenter l'accéléromètre, le processeur et la mémoire, ledit châssis comprenant une cavité (538) contenant la source d'énergie électrique.
  3. Appareil selon la revendication 1, ledit boîtier inférieur étant un boîtier d'une seule pièce formée intégralement, et ledit outil de battage comprenant pas plus de deux interfaces (210, 516) pour une incorporation dans le train d'outil de fond de trou.
  4. Appareil selon la revendication 3, lesdites pas plus de deux interfaces comprenant :
    une interface supérieure (210) au niveau d'une extrémité supérieure du boîtier supérieur, ladite interface supérieure comprenant un moyen de fixation mécanique supérieur (212) destiné à se coupler à une partie supérieure (140) du train d'outil de fond de trou ; et
    une interface inférieure (516) au niveau d'une extrémité inférieure du boîtier inférieur, ladite interface inférieure comprenant un moyen de fixation mécanique inférieur (514) destiné à se coupler à la partie inférieure du train d'outil de fond de trou.
  5. Appareil selon la revendication 4,
    ladite interface supérieure comprenant en outre un connecteur électrique supérieur (215) raccordé électriquement à au moins un composant du système de capteur, ledit connecteur électrique supérieur étant destiné à raccorder électriquement l'outil de battage avec la partie supérieure du train d'outil de fond de trou ; et
    ladite interface inférieure comprenant en outre un connecteur électrique inférieur (546) destiné à raccorder électriquement l'outil de battage avec la partie inférieure du train d'outil de fond de trou.
  6. Appareil selon la revendication 1, ledit boîtier inférieur comprenant une épaule (518) s'étendant radialement dans le second alésage et étant en contact avec le châssis afin de maintenir une position axiale du châssis dans le boîtier inférieur, et ledit au moins un élément de fixation maintenant le châssis en contact avec l'épaule.
  7. Appareil selon la revendication 1, ledit châssis comprenant un canal (544) s'étendant longitudinalement le long d'un côté du châssis, et ledit canal s'étendant entre des extrémités opposées du châssis et recevant des conducteurs électriques (505).
  8. Appareil selon la revendication 1, ledit châssis comprenant une plaque de montage (536), ledit système de capteur comprenant en outre une carte électronique (522) portant un processeur (556) et un dispositif de mémoire (558), et ladite carte électronique étant couplée à la plaque de montage.
  9. Appareil selon la revendication 1, ledit élément de fixation pouvant être utilisé pour venir en prise par filetage avec le boîtier et venir en contact avec le châssis pour maintenir le châssis dans une position prédéfinie dans le second alésage du boîtier inférieur, et l'élément de fixation entier étant disposé dans le boîtier inférieur.
  10. Procédé comprenant :
    le couplage d'un boîtier supérieur (242) d'un outil de battage (200) avec une partie supérieure (140) d'un train d'outil de fond de trou (110), ledit outil de battage comprenant :
    le boîtier supérieur comprenant un premier alésage (211) s'étendant longitudinalement à travers celui-ci ;
    le boîtier inférieur (265, 502) comprenant un second alésage (504) s'étendant longitudinalement à travers celui-ci ; et
    un arbre (270) couplé au boîtier inférieur et s'étendant dans le premier alésage du boîtier supérieur, ledit boîtier supérieur se déplaçant axialement par rapport au boîtier inférieur le long de l'arbre ;
    le couplage du boîtier inférieur de l'outil de battage à une partie inférieure (150) du train d'outil de fond de trou ;
    le transport du train d'outil de fond de trou dans un puits de forage (120) ;
    l'application d'une tension au train d'outil de fond de trou pour déclencher l'outil de battage afin de transmettre un impact au train d'outil de fond de trou ;
    la détection d'une accélération avec un accéléromètre (526) durant l'impact ; et caractérisé en ce que le procédé comprend en outre, avant le couplage du boîtier inférieur de l'outil d'abattage à la partie inférieure du train d'outil de fond de trou, l'insertion d'un système de capteur dans le second alésage du boîtier inférieur de l'outil de battage, ledit système de capteur comprenant :
    un châssis (520) ; et
    l'accéléromètre (526) raccordé au châssis, ladite application de la tension au train d'outil de fond de trou pour déclencher l'outil de battage afin de transmettre l'impact au train d'outil de fond de trou n'appliquant pas de tension au châssis.
  11. Procédé selon la revendication 10, ledit châssis comprenant une surface externe incurvée en contact avec une surface interne incurvée de manière coopérative (508) du boîtier inférieur, et ladite insertion du système de capteur dans le second alésage du boîtier inférieur de l'outil de battage comprenant l'insertion du système de capteur dans le second alésage du boîtier inférieur de l'outil de battage de sorte que la surface externe incurvée du châssis soit en contact avec la surface interne incurvée de manière coopérative du boîtier inférieur.
  12. Procédé selon la revendication 10 comprenant en outre, avant le couplage du boîtier inférieur de l'outil de battage avec le boîtier inférieur du train d'outil de fond de trou, la mise en contact d'au moins un élément de fixation (532, 572) avec le boîtier inférieur et en contact avec le châssis pour retenir le châssis dans le second alésage du boîtier inférieur.
  13. Procédé selon la revendication 10, ledit outil de battage comprenant en outre un dispositif de mémoire (558) raccordé au châssis, et ledit procédé comprenant en outre le stockage des données d'accélération d'impact produites par l'accéléromètre sur le dispositif de mémoire.
  14. Procédé selon la revendication 10, le déclenchement de l'outil de battage pour transmettre l'impact au train d'outils de fond de trou entraînant un déplacement du boîtier supérieur par rapport au boîtier inférieur le long de l'arbre jusqu'à ce que les caractéristiques d'impact correspondantes (490, 495) des boîtiers inférieurs et supérieurs entrent en collision pour générer l'impact transmis au train d'outil de fond de trou.
  15. Procédé selon la revendication 10, ladite tension étant une première tension et ledit impact étant un premier impact, et ledit procédé comprenant en outre :
    la comparaison de l'accélération détectée à un niveau prédéfini d'accélération qu'un composant de la partie inférieure du train d'outil de fond de trou peut supporter fonctionnellement ; et
    sur la base de la comparaison, l'application de l'une de la première tension et d'une seconde tension au train d'outil de fond de trou pour déclencher l'outil de battage afin de transmettre un second impact au train d'outil de fond de trou, ladite seconde tension étant supérieure à la première tension.
