Description

  • The present invention relates to a protective package assembly for a household appliance, in particular a domestic refrigerator.
  • In general, a package assembly is fitted around a household appliance to protect it from damages which can be easily caused during transportation thereof from the manufacturer to the consumer.
  • Fig. 1 shows a conventional protective package assembly (1') for a refrigeration appliance (2') which has a rectangular shaped main body (3'). The protective package assembly (1') has a plurality of corner segments (5a', 5b', 5c'), in particular two front vertical corner segments (5a'), two rear vertical corner segments (5b'), two top horizontal corner segments (5c'), and two bottom horizontal corner segments (not shown). Each corner segment (5a, 5b, 5c) extends along a respective corner section (6a', 6b', 6c') of the main body (3). The inner surface (7') of each corner segment (5a', 5b', 5c') abuts against the outer surface (8') of the respective corner section (6a', 6b', 6c') of the main body (3). In the conventional protective package assembly (1'), the corner segments (5a', 5b', 5c') are typically made of expanded polystyrene which has a good shock-absorbing property and is light weight.
  • When assembling the package assembly (1') with the refrigeration appliance (2') usually the entire main body (3) of the refrigeration appliance (2') is wrapped in a transparent protective foil (not shown) after the corner segment (5a', 5b', 5c') are fitted onto the respective corner section (6a', 6b', 6c'). Thereafter, usually two vertical tensile traps (not shown) are fastened around the corner segments (5a', 5b', 5c').
  • A drawback of this conventional protective package assembly (1') is that despite the shock-absorbing property of the expanded polystyrene there are still incidences where the outer surface (8') of the main body (3') underneath the corner segments (5a', 5b', 5c') is damaged due to impacts during the transportation. Thus, the conventional protective package assembly (1') has a limited safety.
  • United States Patent Application US 2004/0226840 A1 discloses a shipping package for household appliances such as refrigerators comprising four elongated expanded polystyrene blocks extending vertically along the corners of the appliance. Moreover, the package comprises two bottom skids and two top pads as well as a cap covering the top of the appliance.
  • An objective of the present invention is to provide a protective package assembly which overcomes the aforementioned drawbacks of the prior art in a cost effective way and which enables an improved safety against impacts.
  • This objective has been achieved by the protective package assembly as defined in claim 1. Further achievements have been attained by the subject-matters respectively defined in the dependent claims.
  • In the protective package assembly of the present invention one or more than one indentation is formed into the inner surface of one or more than one corner segment. Each indentation has a lateral opening to the outside. Each indentation extends a predetermined length in the longitudinal direction of the respective corner segment. Each indentation extends to the outer edge of the main body in the transverse direction of the respective corner segment.
  • In an embodiment, the protective package assembly comprises four vertical corner segments which extend in a top/bottom direction. Two of the vertical corner segments protect the front of the household appliance. The other two vertical corner segments protect the rear of the household appliance.
  • In a version of this embodiment, the protective package assembly also comprises four horizontal corner segments which extend in a rear/front direction. Two of the horizontal corner segments protect the top of the household appliance. The other two horizontal corner segments protect the bottom of the household appliance.
  • In another version of this embodiment, the horizontal corner segments and the vertical corner segments have notches and protrusions respectively for connecting them with one another.
  • In another version of this embodiment, the notches and the protrusions are respectively shaped to enable a dovetail joint.
  • In another embodiment, a number of indentations are sequentially formed into the two front vertical corner segments.
  • In another embodiment, each of the vertical corner segments has two legs, namely a first leg and a second leg. The first legs of the of the two front vertical corner segments face the door.
  • In another embodiment, each indentation spans a width of an entire first leg of the respective front vertical corner segments, in particular the innermost edge of indentation immediately coincides with the edge of the door
  • In another embodiment, each indentation has a tapered rectangular shape.
  • In another embodiment, a number of indentations are sequentially formed into the two top horizontal corner segments.
  • In another embodiment, a number of recesses are formed into the vertical corner segments between the indentations.
  • In another embodiment, each recess has a rectangular cross section.
  • In another embodiment, the corner segments are made from expanded polystyrene. However, other type of foam material can be alternatively used.
  • With the protective package assembly of the present invention, in particular by virtue of the indentations, the shock-absorbing performance of the corner segments has been improved. The indentations, in particular the air inside indentations prevent an impact from being directly transmitted to the outer surface of the main body. Also in case of a sudden impact, the air inside the indentation can easily escape through the lateral opening, and attenuate the shock. In addition, the sequential arrangement of the indentations positively contributes to the overall protective effect. With the protective package assembly of the present invention, in particular by virtue of the recesses formed between the neighboring indentations, the shock-absorbing performance of the corner segments has been further improved. With the protective package assembly of the present invention, the incidence of damages can be effectively reduced, and a household appliance can be transported more safely. In addition, the expanded polystyrene consumption can be reduced due to the indentations and the recesses of the protective package assembly. Thus, the protective package assembly of the present invention has been rendered environment-friendly.
  • Additional advantages of the protective package assembly of the present invention will become apparent with the detailed description of the embodiments with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
    • Figure 1 - is a schematic partial perspective view of a conventional protective package assembly which is fitted around a refrigeration appliance,
