Abstract

The present invention relates to a drum (1) comprising a cylindrical body (2), a circular cover (3) that is fixed to the rear side of the body (2), a circular seam (4) that is produced by circumferentially bending and folding outwards the overlapping peripheries of the body (2) and the cover (3), a drum spider (6) having more than one spider arm (5) that enables the movement of transmission elements such as electric motor, belt-pulley, etc. to be transferred to the body (2), a circular flange (7) that is disposed between the body (2) and the seam (4), that forms the rear edge of the body (2), whereto the drum spider (6) is connected, and more than one connection member (8) that enables the drum spider (6) to be fixed to the flange (7).

Description

    A DRUM WITH IMPROVED MECHANICAL STRENGTH AND THE PRODUCTION METHOD THEREOF
  • The present invention relates to a drum that is suitable for using in laundry washing or washing-drying machines, and the production method thereof.
  • In laundry washing or washing-drying machines, laundry is loaded into a drum, the drum is rotated by means of an electric motor and washing, spin-drying and drying processes are realized. In the state of the art, for the production of the drum, a rectangular sheet metal is bent into a cylinder and the edges that face one another are joined and thus, the hollow cylindrical body of the drum is formed. The front and rear sides of the cylindrical body are covered by a circular front cover, whereon the laundry loading opening is located, and a rear cover. By means of spider arms that are connected to the sheet metal and the rear cover by means of connection members such as screws, etc., energy produced by the electric motor is delivered to the drum, thus enabling the drum to rotate. Due to the rotational movement of the drum, forces act in the radial and axial directions onto the connection members that connect the spider arms with the sheet metal and the rear cover. Due to the acting forces, the connection members are deformed in the course of time, risking the detachment of the spider arms from the drum.
  • In the state of the art European Patent No. EP1520067, a washing machine drum is explained which comprises a cylindrical body shell and circular front and rear lids, the peripheries of which are connected to the cylindrical shell by means of a seam, and wherein the strength of the said seam is increased against centrifugal forces by being circumferentially stamped.
  • The aim of the present invention is the realization of a drum, the mechanical strength of which is improved.
  • The drum realized in order to attain the aim of the present invention, explicated in the first claim and the respective claims thereof, is composed of a cylindrical body and a cover mounted to the rear side of the body. In the production of the drum, the body and the cover are connected by means of the seams formed by circumferentially bending and folding outwards the overlapping peripheries of the body and the cover. The drum comprises a drum spider having more than spider arm that drives the body joined by means of the seams, a circular flange where the drum spider is connected to the body and more than one connection member enabling the spider arm to be fixed onto the flange.
  • The drum of the present invention comprises at least one support plate that is disposed on the flange, that prolongs the lifespan of the drum and is produced externally, through which the connection members are passed. By means of the support plate, the regions where the spider arms are fixed onto the flange are strengthened.
  • In an embodiment of the present invention, the drum is used in laundry washing machines.
  • In another embodiment of the present invention, the drum is used in laundry washing-drying machines.
  • The drum realized in order to attain the aim of the present invention is illustrated in the attached figures, where:

  • Figure 2 – is the perspective view of a drum in the state where the body and the cover are joined.
  • Figure 3 – is the partial perspective view of a drum related to an embodiment of the present invention.

  • The drum (1) comprises a cylindrical body (2), a circular cover (3) that is fixed to the rear side of the body (2), a circular seam (4) that is produced by circumferentially bending and folding outwards the overlapping peripheries of the body (2) and the cover (3), a drum spider (6) having more than spider arm (5) that enables the movement of transmission elements such as electric motor, belt-pulley, etc. to be transferred to the body (2), a circular flange (7) that is disposed between the body (2) and the seam (4), that forms the rear edge of the body (2), whereto the drum spider (6) is connected, and more than connection member (8) that enables the drum spider (6) to be fixed to the flange (7). While producing the drum (1), the cylindrical body (2) produced from a rectangular sheet metal as in the state of the art is connected with the cover (3). While joining the cover (3) with the body (2), the seam (4) is formed by bending and folding the overlapping peripheries of the cover (3) and body (2) such that the peripheries remain at the outer side of the drum (1). The circular flange (7) extends between the body (2) and the seam (4).
  • The drum (1) of the present invention comprises at least one support plate (9) that is disposed between the connection members (8) and the flange (7) at the regions where the spider arms (5) are fixed to the flange (7). The support plate (9) is an element that is externally produced, separately from the sheet metal. By means of the support plate (9), the drum (1) is strengthened at a narrow, strip ring-shaped region where the connection members (8) are connected onto the flange (7). Thus, the connection members (8) and/or the flange (7) are prevented from being deformed as a result of the movement of the spider arms (5).
  • In an embodiment of the present invention, the support plate (9) is connected to the flange (7) so as to remain on the outer surface of the flange (7).
  • In an embodiment of the present invention, the support plate (9) is connected to the flange (7) so as to remain on the inner surface of the flange (7).
  • In an embodiment of the present invention, the support plate (9) surrounds the flange (7). In this embodiment, the support plate (9) is shaped as a full circle by being bent and strengthens the drum (1) along the flange (7).
  • In an embodiment of the present invention, the support plate (9) extends over the flange (7) and grasps the edge of the body (2) joined with the flange (7). Thus, by means of the support plate (9), the edges of the body (2) close to the flange (7) are strengthened.
  • In an embodiment of the present invention, the production method of the drum (1) consists of the following steps:
  • - joining the body (2) with the cover (3),
  • - forming the seam (4),
  • - placing the support plate (9) onto the flange (7) and
  • - fixing the drum spider (6) to the flange (7) and the support plate (9) by means of the connection members (8).
  • In an embodiment of the present invention, the drum (1) is used in laundry washing machines.
  • In another embodiment of the present invention, the drum (1) is used in laundry washing-drying machines.

Claims (8)

  1. A drum (1) comprising
    - a cylindrical body (2),
    - a circular cover (3) fixed to the rear side of the body (2),
    - a circular seam (4) that is produced by circumferentially bending and folding outwards the overlapping peripheries of the body (2) and the cover (3)
    - a drum spider (6) having more than spider arm (5) that enables the movement of transmission elements such as electric motor, belt-pulley, etc. to be transferred to the body (2),
    - a circular flange (7) that is disposed between the body (2) and the seam (4), that forms the rear edge of the body (2), whereto the drum spider (6) is connected,
    - more than connection member (8) that enables the drum spider (6) to be fixed to the flange (7)
    characterized by
    - at least one support plate (9) that is disposed between the connection members (8) and the flange (7) at the regions where the spider arms (5) are fixed to the flange (7).
  2. A drum (1) as in Claim 1, characterized by the support plate (9) that is disposed on the outer surface of the flange (7).
  3. A drum (1) as in Claim 1 or Claim 2, characterized by the support plate (9) that is disposed on the inner surface of the flange (7).
  4. A drum (1) as in any one of the above claims, characterized by the support plate (9) that surrounds the flange (7).
  5. A drum (1) as in any one of the above claims, characterized by the support plate (9) that extends over the flange (7) and grasps the edge of the body (2), that is joined with the flange (7).
  6. A laundry washing machine characterized by a drum (1) as in any one of the above claims.
  7. A laundry washing-drying machine characterized by a drum (1) as in any one of Claims 1 to 5.
  8. A production method for a drum (1) as in Claim 1, comprising the steps of:
    - joining the body (2) with the cover (3),
    - forming the seam (4),
    - placing the support plate (9) onto the flange (7) and
    - fixing the drum spider (6) to the flange (7) and the support plate (9) by means of the connection members (8).
