  • the first sheet and the second sheet each form a filter which can be passed by a fluid and which forms a barrier to the beverage preparation product, wherein, in use, with the coffee-maker a fluid such as water is supplied under pressure to the pad so that the fluid is pressed through the pad for obtaining the beverage which thereupon leaves the pad.
  • the invention further relates to a method for manufacturing such a pad.
  • the invention further relates to a system provided with a coffee-maker and such a pad, wherein the coffee-maker is provided with a holder for receiving the pad, a cover for closing off the holder, and fluid means for generating a fluid flow under pressure, wherein the holder is provided with at least one beverage outflow opening and the cover is provided with at least one fluid inflow opening which are in fluid communication with the fluid means for supplying the fluid flow to the fluid inflow openings so that the fluid is supplied under pressure to the first sheet of the pad so that the fluid is pressed through the pad for the preparation of the beverage in the pad, wherein the beverage leaves the pad via the second sheet to proceed to leave the holder via the at least one beverage outflow opening.
  • the invention relates to the use of such a pad and a method for preparing a beverage with the pad.
  • Such a pad such a system and such a use and method are known per se from EP 0 904 717 Al.
  • the beverage preparation product consists of ground coffee.
  • the first sheet and the second sheet are each made of filtering paper.
  • the invention contemplates the provision of an improved pad.
  • PCT-application PCT/NL2013/050510 of the same applicant is included by reference, wherein especially specifications, materials, dimensions, method and preparation steps as well as system application of the subject matter of the above and especially of the pad can be transferred to the subject matter claimed herein without being mentioned herein in detail. Thereby existence of a sturdy second sheet is not mandatory.
  • the pad descripted above comprises at least one intermediate enforcing sheet, meandering amongst and being connected at alternating connecting portions to inner sides of the first sheet and the second sheet within the inner space in such a way that at least two product receiving chambers are constituted within the inner space each comprising part of the beverage preparation product.
  • “meandering” is inter alia defined as an extension between two points or along a pathway in a sinuous line or similar wiggly line and especially a line with alternatingly changing directions having one major extending direction.
  • meandering defines a sheet material as to follow a winding and turning course when seen in a cross section or an isometric view. With regards to sheet material it can be understood as to be arranged in a form of
  • form retaining is inter aha defined as to basically maintain possession of the form also under normal handling condition before and after use of the pad and especially when entering the pad to a beverage production apparatus or extracting the pad from the beverage preparation apparatus.
  • the pad is rigid in such a way so that it is basically to not being bent in an excessive way and/or not to be compressed by or during normal handling during the introduction and extraction to and from the beverage preparation
  • the pad by the inventive arrangement in such a way that when the pad is gripped at a gripping portion near the sealing seam that the opposite side of the pad, with regard to a direction along its major plane does not bend downwards due to gravity in an intense manner and, especially, not more than 20 mm, preferably 10 mm and more preferably 5 mm. Further it also means that no compressing above 8 mm, preferably above 5mm and most preferably above 3 mm in a vertical direction with regard to a vertical direction to the envelope of the pad occurs during the above normal handling.
  • the invention is based on the insight that the known pad, when it has been placed in a holder of the coffee-maker by a user, may sometimes be slightly deformed. This can happen because the known pad is of flexible and supple design and, for instance, may be taken from its package in slightly deformed condition. If the known pad has been placed in the holder, a user should take care that the pad in the holder has its original shape so that the second sheet of the pad extends over a bottom of the holder up to the upstanding sidewall of the holder. If he doesn't, the risk of bypass is increased.
  • Bypass means that the fluid being supplied under pressure to the first sheet of the pad will flow in part around the pad to a beverage outflow opening which is provided in a bottom of the holder on which the pad rests. All this has as a consequence that not the complete amount of fluid being supplied to the first sheet of the pad will flow to the beverage outflow opening of the holder via the pad. A consequence is that the beverage which is received in, for example, a cup, is diluted with the fluid.
  • the invention also contemplates facilitating the use of a pad.
  • the pad is of form-retaining design due to the interaction of the enforcing sheet with the first sheet and the second sheet and further preferably with the beverage production product received in the receiving chambers, the pad can be placed in the holder without relevant deformation which increases the risk of bypass.
  • the pad being form retaining and having the at least one enforcing sheet meandering within the inner space connected to the first and second sheet, a distribution of the beverage preparation product in the envelope of the pad varies little from one pad to another.
  • an anti-drip effect occurs. That is, directly after use the pad can be taken from an apparatus while the chance that drops fall off the pad has been reduced.
  • the pad also remains form retaining when subjected to high and especially fluid preparation temperatures and in detail when a fluid such as the beverage is flowing through it, while the fluid can have a temperature of at most 80 degrees Celsius, more particularly at most 90 degrees Celsius, and preferably at most 99 degrees Celsius.
  • the pad also remains form retaining when it comes into contact with a fluid having a temperature of 80 degrees Celsius, more particularly of 90 degrees Celsius and preferably of 99 degrees Celsius.
  • the first sheet and/or the second sheet and/or the enforcing sheet are made of a flexible, especially with regard to bending around an axis coplanar to their major planes, non-form retaining material.
  • a rigid and form-retaining pad is provided in a cost-effective and easy to produce manner also comprising the above advantages.
  • the enforcing sheet forms a filter which can be passed by a fluid and which forms a barrier to the beverage preparation product.
  • this filter material is made of the same material as the first sheet and/or the second sheet and preferably that all the three sheets are made of the same material.
  • the filter material comprises at least one specific passing portion fluid can pass, e.g. for entering and/or leaving the pad and/or the respective product receiving chambers respectively. Outside of the at least one passing portion, the fluid is preferably hindered to pass the filter material and the sheets respectively.
  • the filter material can also be provided with at least one of the first and the second sheet.
  • Such a passing portion can be e.g. arranged on at least on raised portion with regard to adjacent lower portions of the beverage product receiving chambers and/or the enforcing sheet respectively. Also it is possible to arrange this passing portions to direct the fluid flow within the pad e.g. to enable passing of the fluid e.g.
  • the pad is dish-shaped or similar round-shaped.
  • the pad is of dish-shaped design, while the longitudinal edges of the first sheet and the second sheet are each in a flat plane, have the shape of a circle and have a diameter within the range of 45 to 90 mm, preferably 70 to 80 mm, more preferably 73 to 76 mm, in particular of approximately 74,4 mm.
  • edge portions of the enforcing sheet are attached to the interconnecting portions of the first sheet and the second sheet and are especially interconnected between the edge portions of the first sheet and the second sheet.
  • This makes production and especially connection between the different provided sheets simple and reliable.
  • it provides an extensive rigidity of the sealing seam arranged at the
  • This rigidity of the "multilayer arrangement" in the sealing seam area and the interconnecting portions respectively further guarantees that forces acting on the pad, especially when the pad is handled and introduced or extracted from a beverage preparation apparatus, are transferred to the bearing arrangement, where the pad is supported in a beverage preparation apparatus, for example a pad holder, or to a portion where the pad is gripped by a user during handling, e.g. entering and discharging the pad to and from a beverage preparation apparatus, in a reliably way.
  • the enforcing sheet meanders from its edge portions in a meandering direction and especially in a radial meandering direction to the central axis.
  • the enforcing sheet meanders from the outer portions of the pad to a central axis portion, which can be the centre of gravity or any other portion forming the geometric central portion of the pad.
  • At least one product receiving chamber is arranged surrounding the central axis. Further preferably it holds that said at least one product receiving chamber is surrounding at least another product receiving chamber, which is then preferably arranged in such a way that the central axis is extending through the at least one product receiving chamber.
  • the result of all the features mentioned before is an annular or surrounding arrangement of multiple receiving chambers, preferably arranged within one plane.
  • all connecting portions are arranged in relation to the central axis inside of the sealing seam and further preferably distant from the interconnecting portions, where the first and the second sheet and eventually also the enforcing sheet are interconnected forming the sealing seam.
  • connecting portions enforcing the rigidity of the pad interconnecting with the traversing parts of the enforcing sheet, which are traversing from one connecting portion on the first sheet to the other following connecting portion on the second sheet or vice versa.
  • At least two following alternating connecting portions are extending in planes basically parallel to each other and especially parallel to the pad's major plane. Having this at least double layer arrangement in these connecting portions, being especially parallel to each other , a reliable fluid permeability is guaranteed, wherein it further enforces the rigidity and the form -retaining ability of the pad.
  • the enforcing sheet extends between at least two following alternating connecting portions of the first sheet and the second sheet and an angle of basically between 30° and 60°, preferably of between 40° and 50° and still more preferably of 45°, when seen in a cross section to the pad.
  • Such an arrangement guarantees a maximum of form-retaining ability and further enhances the traversing of forces acting on the pad to the respective supporting areas or gripping areas when the pad is handled.
  • Preferably having an abutment of the preferably compressed beverage preparation product to the enforcing sheet and especially to these traversing portions mentioned before form retaining to a high degree is provided, also when flexible and non-rigid sheet material is used and also after impact of moisture and fluids.
  • these connecting portions which are arranged closest to the sealing seam, are arranged at the inner side of said first or second sheet, where during use the prepared beverage leaves the pad.
  • the connecting portions arranged in such a way a reliable force traversing is guaranteed, further enhancing the form-retaining ability of the pad.
  • the alternating connecting portion in between is then arranged on the side, where during use the fluid enters the pad.
  • such an arrangement can be multiplied with regard to the left side and the right side of the pad with regard to the central axis and seen in a cross section.
  • the basic result is an "arch and tension element" -arrangement improving the rigidity.
  • the product receiving chambers are separated from each other in such a way that the beverage preparation product of one chamber is separated from the other chamber and especially so that it cannot shift from one chamber to the other chamber or vice versa. This guarantees a consistent fluid path through the pad and further prevents the constitution of portions with reduced coffee preparation products density due to the migration of the product, especially in horizontal direction.

Description

Title: Form retaining pad for use in a coffee maker
Description The present invention relates to a form retaining and especially rigid pad for use in a coffee-maker for preparing at least 1 or 2 cups of beverage, provided with an envelope with an inner space which is filled with a beverage preparation product for preparing the beverage, wherein the beverage preparation product comprises a product to be extracted with a fluid and/or a product soluble in a fluid, wherein the envelope is formed at least by a first sheet and a second sheet which are interconnected at their circumferential edge portions enclosing the inner space, wherein these interconnecting portions of the first sheet and the second sheet form a sealing seam, wherein
the first sheet and the second sheet each form a filter which can be passed by a fluid and which forms a barrier to the beverage preparation product, wherein, in use, with the coffee-maker a fluid such as water is supplied under pressure to the pad so that the fluid is pressed through the pad for obtaining the beverage which thereupon leaves the pad.
The invention further relates to a method for manufacturing such a pad.
The invention further relates to a system provided with a coffee-maker and such a pad, wherein the coffee-maker is provided with a holder for receiving the pad, a cover for closing off the holder, and fluid means for generating a fluid flow under pressure, wherein the holder is provided with at least one beverage outflow opening and the cover is provided with at least one fluid inflow opening which are in fluid communication with the fluid means for supplying the fluid flow to the fluid inflow openings so that the fluid is supplied under pressure to the first sheet of the pad so that the fluid is pressed through the pad for the preparation of the beverage in the pad, wherein the beverage leaves the pad via the second sheet to proceed to leave the holder via the at least one beverage outflow opening.
Also, the invention relates to the use of such a pad and a method for preparing a beverage with the pad.
Such a pad, such a system and such a use and method are known per se from EP 0 904 717 Al. In EP 0 904 717 Al the beverage preparation product consists of ground coffee. Furthermore, the first sheet and the second sheet are each made of filtering paper. The invention contemplates the provision of an improved pad. Herewith PCT-application PCT/NL2013/050510 of the same applicant is included by reference, wherein especially specifications, materials, dimensions, method and preparation steps as well as system application of the subject matter of the above and especially of the pad can be transferred to the subject matter claimed herein without being mentioned herein in detail. Thereby existence of a sturdy second sheet is not mandatory.
According to the invention, it holds that the pad descripted above comprises at least one intermediate enforcing sheet, meandering amongst and being connected at alternating connecting portions to inner sides of the first sheet and the second sheet within the inner space in such a way that at least two product receiving chambers are constituted within the inner space each comprising part of the beverage preparation product. Within the scope of the invention "meandering" is inter alia defined as an extension between two points or along a pathway in a sinuous line or similar wiggly line and especially a line with alternatingly changing directions having one major extending direction. It is to be understood that meandering defines a sheet material as to follow a winding and turning course when seen in a cross section or an isometric view. With regards to sheet material it can be understood as to be arranged in a form of
alternating up and down waves or similar ups and downs, when seen in a plane view.
Within the scope of the invention "form retaining" is inter aha defined as to basically maintain possession of the form also under normal handling condition before and after use of the pad and especially when entering the pad to a beverage production apparatus or extracting the pad from the beverage preparation apparatus. In speciality it is defined that the pad is rigid in such a way so that it is basically to not being bent in an excessive way and/or not to be compressed by or during normal handling during the introduction and extraction to and from the beverage preparation
apparatus.
This especially means that while handling the pad no intense bending of the pad occurs. For example, it is possible to provide the pad by the inventive arrangement in such a way that when the pad is gripped at a gripping portion near the sealing seam that the opposite side of the pad, with regard to a direction along its major plane does not bend downwards due to gravity in an intense manner and, especially, not more than 20 mm, preferably 10 mm and more preferably 5 mm. Further it also means that no compressing above 8 mm, preferably above 5mm and most preferably above 3 mm in a vertical direction with regard to a vertical direction to the envelope of the pad occurs during the above normal handling.
The invention is based on the insight that the known pad, when it has been placed in a holder of the coffee-maker by a user, may sometimes be slightly deformed. Bypass means that the fluid being supplied under pressure to the first sheet of the pad will flow in part around the pad to a beverage outflow opening which is provided in a bottom of the holder on which the pad rests. All this has as a consequence that not the complete amount of fluid being supplied to the first sheet of the pad will flow to the beverage outflow opening of the holder via the pad. A consequence is that the beverage which is received in, for example, a cup, is diluted with the fluid. The invention also contemplates facilitating the use of a pad. As according to the invention the pad is of form-retaining design due to the interaction of the enforcing sheet with the first sheet and the second sheet and further preferably with the beverage production product received in the receiving chambers, the pad can be placed in the holder without relevant deformation which increases the risk of bypass. Moreover, it appears that owing to the pad being form retaining and having the at least one enforcing sheet meandering within the inner space connected to the first and second sheet, a distribution of the beverage preparation product in the envelope of the pad varies little from one pad to another. Also, it appears in many variants of the form retaining pad according to the invention that an anti-drip effect occurs. That is, directly after use the pad can be taken from an apparatus while the chance that drops fall off the pad has been reduced.
Preferably, it holds that the pad also remains form retaining when subjected to high and especially fluid preparation temperatures and in detail when a fluid such as the beverage is flowing through it, while the fluid can have a temperature of at most 80 degrees Celsius, more particularly at most 90 degrees Celsius, and preferably at most 99 degrees Celsius. This has as a consequence that also after use, hence after the pad has been subject to flow-through of fluid that will generally have a high temperature, when, for example, coffee or tea is being prepared, it will still be form-retaining. If the pad after use is still form retaining, the pad can more easily be removed from the holder by the user in that the user has a better grip of the pad. Preferably, it holds then that the pad also remains form-retaining when it comes into contact with a fluid having a temperature of 80 degrees Celsius, more particularly of 90 degrees Celsius and preferably of 99 degrees Celsius.
Preferably it holds that the first sheet and/or the second sheet and/or the enforcing sheet are made of a flexible, especially with regard to bending around an axis coplanar to their major planes, non-form retaining material. According to the arrangement of the first and second sheet in combination with the connected enforcing sheet despite the flexible material and further preferably in combination with the beverage preparation product included in the receiving chambers, a rigid and form-retaining pad is provided in a cost-effective and easy to produce manner also comprising the above advantages. Preferably it holds that the enforcing sheet forms a filter which can be passed by a fluid and which forms a barrier to the beverage preparation product. Further preferably it holds that this filter material is made of the same material as the first sheet and/or the second sheet and preferably that all the three sheets are made of the same material. By providing a filter material as an enforcing sheet fluid flow between the individual receiving chambers and in detail also in a horizontal way is allowed enhancing the quality of the coffee.
Preferably the filter material comprises at least one specific passing portion fluid can pass, e.g. for entering and/or leaving the pad and/or the respective product receiving chambers respectively. Outside of the at least one passing portion, the fluid is preferably hindered to pass the filter material and the sheets respectively. The filter material can also be provided with at least one of the first and the second sheet. Such a passing portion can be e.g. arranged on at least on raised portion with regard to adjacent lower portions of the beverage product receiving chambers and/or the enforcing sheet respectively. Also it is possible to arrange this passing portions to direct the fluid flow within the pad e.g. to enable passing of the fluid e.g. between adjacent product receiving chambers in a vertical direction and hinder passing in a horizontal direction or in specific combination to setup at least one defined fluid flow traveling path. Preferably it holds that the pad is dish-shaped or similar round-shaped. By providing the enforcing sheet as a meandering enforcing sheet within the inner space between the two first and second sheets forming the pad as a dish-shaped or similar round-shaped eases production of the meandering arrangement. By having fluids entered from the first sheet or the second sheet and leaving the pad from the second sheet or the first sheet
respectively, this dish-shaped arrangement guarantees a smooth wetting and fluid-shovel path in a constant way through the pad. Preferably, the pad is of dish-shaped design, while the longitudinal edges of the first sheet and the second sheet are each in a flat plane, have the shape of a circle and have a diameter within the range of 45 to 90 mm, preferably 70 to 80 mm, more preferably 73 to 76 mm, in particular of approximately 74,4 mm.
Preferably it holds that the edge portions of the enforcing sheet are attached to the interconnecting portions of the first sheet and the second sheet and are especially interconnected between the edge portions of the first sheet and the second sheet. This makes production and especially connection between the different provided sheets simple and reliable. Furthermore, it provides an extensive rigidity of the sealing seam arranged at the
interconnecting portions. This rigidity of the "multilayer arrangement" in the sealing seam area and the interconnecting portions respectively further guarantees that forces acting on the pad, especially when the pad is handled and introduced or extracted from a beverage preparation apparatus, are transferred to the bearing arrangement, where the pad is supported in a beverage preparation apparatus, for example a pad holder, or to a portion where the pad is gripped by a user during handling, e.g. entering and discharging the pad to and from a beverage preparation apparatus, in a reliably way. In general, having a meandering arrangement of the enforcing sheet connected to the first and second sheet via connecting portions which are arranged in the inner space of the pad, forces, acting on the pad as mentioned before, can be reliably transferred to the supporting elements of the pad or to the portions of the pad, especially edge portions where a user normally grabs the pad during normal handling operations.
Preferably it holds that with regard to a central axis, extending vertically to the pad's major plane and surrounded by the sealing seam, the enforcing sheet meanders from its edge portions in a meandering direction and especially in a radial meandering direction to the central axis. This can be interpreted that the enforcing sheet meanders from the outer portions of the pad to a central axis portion, which can be the centre of gravity or any other portion forming the geometric central portion of the pad.
Preferably it holds that with regard to a central axis Ac, extending vertically to the pad's major plane and surrounded by the sealing seam, at least one product receiving chamber is arranged surrounding the central axis. Further preferably it holds that said at least one product receiving chamber is surrounding at least another product receiving chamber, which is then preferably arranged in such a way that the central axis is extending through the at least one product receiving chamber. The result of all the features mentioned before is an annular or surrounding arrangement of multiple receiving chambers, preferably arranged within one plane.
Further, also a stacked arrangement of receiving chambers, one over the other is possible. Also multiple enforcing sheets or multiple first and second sheets are arrangable and connectable with each other forming the pad according to the invention. Further a segment-like arrangement is possible like it will be explained further below.
Preferably, all connecting portions are arranged in relation to the central axis inside of the sealing seam and further preferably distant from the interconnecting portions, where the first and the second sheet and eventually also the enforcing sheet are interconnected forming the sealing seam. This guarantees a at least double layer arrangement in the
connecting portions enforcing the rigidity of the pad interconnecting with the traversing parts of the enforcing sheet, which are traversing from one connecting portion on the first sheet to the other following connecting portion on the second sheet or vice versa.
Preferably it holds that at least two following alternating connecting portions are extending in planes basically parallel to each other and especially parallel to the pad's major plane. Having this at least double layer arrangement in these connecting portions, being especially parallel to each other , a reliable fluid permeability is guaranteed, wherein it further enforces the rigidity and the form -retaining ability of the pad. Preferably it holds that the enforcing sheet extends between at least two following alternating connecting portions of the first sheet and the second sheet and an angle of basically between 30° and 60°, preferably of between 40° and 50° and still more preferably of 45°, when seen in a cross section to the pad. Such an arrangement guarantees a maximum of form-retaining ability and further enhances the traversing of forces acting on the pad to the respective supporting areas or gripping areas when the pad is handled. Preferably having an abutment of the preferably compressed beverage preparation product to the enforcing sheet and especially to these traversing portions mentioned before form retaining to a high degree is provided, also when flexible and non-rigid sheet material is used and also after impact of moisture and fluids.
Preferably it holds that these connecting portions, which are arranged closest to the sealing seam, are arranged at the inner side of said first or second sheet, where during use the prepared beverage leaves the pad. By the connecting portions arranged in such a way a reliable force traversing is guaranteed, further enhancing the form-retaining ability of the pad. Having a pad with two connecting portions arranged as mentioned above, one with regard to the left side of a pad and one with regard to the right side of a pad, when seen in a cross section, the alternating connecting portion in between is then arranged on the side, where during use the fluid enters the pad. Of course, such an arrangement can be multiplied with regard to the left side and the right side of the pad with regard to the central axis and seen in a cross section. The basic result is an "arch and tension element" -arrangement improving the rigidity. Despite the before mentioned arrangement, this is also applicable to all other arrangements and specifications of the pad and its embodiments. Preferably it holds that the product receiving chambers are separated from each other in such a way that the beverage preparation product of one chamber is separated from the other chamber and especially so that it cannot shift from one chamber to the other chamber or vice versa. This guarantees a consistent fluid path through the pad and further prevents the constitution of portions with reduced coffee preparation products density due to the migration of the product, especially in horizontal direction. Due to the preferably inclined arrangement of the enforcing sheet as mentioned above with regard to its traversing portions, where the enforcing sheet traverses in direction from one sheet to the other, it has to be mentioned that also with regard to the migration of beverage preparation product during the beverage preparation the form stability and retaining ability is enhanced as attempts of the beverage preparation product to drift especially in a horizontal way are prevented without having negative impact on the form of the pad. In contrast, with separating walls being arranged in a vertical manner with regard to the first and second sheet due to the drift direction, such deformation will probably occur.
Further it holds that the at least one of the first, the second or the enforcing sheets is made out of a thermoplastic material. This allows especially the thermo bonding and connection of the different sheets with each other forming the interconnecting portions and/or the connecting portions. In this regard and especially with regard to the material, the above mentioned PCT application PCT/NL 2013/050510 is referenced, wherein the particular features are explicitly included herewith. This relates to the material as being made of a non-woven material, the preparation of the material consisting of a plastic, providing cellulose fibers and/or cellulose filaments, the respective density specifications of the sheets and the material, like polyester fiber, polylactic acid (PLA) fibers etc., wherein the specifications are preferably provided with at least one of the first, the second or the enforcing sheet.
Preferably it holds that at least one of the sheets is made of a thermoplastic material and especially such a material that the sheets are connectable with each other and especially non-detachably connectable with each other by a heat-bonding process and preferably being formable such a processes.
Preferably it holds that the enforcing sheet comprises a higher amount of thermoplastic material than the first and/or the second sheet. This is advantageous especially when the enforcing sheet is to be heat bonded to the second and/or the first sheet. It also preferably holds that at least one of the sheets comprises a glue or similar bonding material and especially an outer glue or similar bonding material layer for bonding and similar connecting the different sheets to each other. Such a layer can e.g. be applied on both sides of the meandering enforcing sheet and/or on at least one side of the first and/or the second sheet.
Preferably it holds that at least one sheet consists of a plastic for at least 50- 70 percent by weight excluding 70 percent by weight or for at least 70 percent by weight; and preferably consists of a plastic for at least 60-70 percent by weight excluding 70 percent by weight or for at least 70 percent by weight, while in particular the plastic consists of plastic fibers and/or plastic filaments.
Preferably it holds that at least one sheet consists of a plastic for at least 70 percent by weight, preferably for at least 80 percent by weight and more preferably for at least 90 percent by weight, while in particular the plastic consists of plastic fibers and/or plastic filaments.
Preferably it holds that at least one sheet consists of a plastic for 50-70 percent by weight excluding 70 percent by weight or for 70-100 percent by weight; more preferably consists of a plastic for 60-70 percent by weight excluding 70 percent by weight or for 70-100 percent by weight, still more preferably consists of a plastic for 70-100 percent by weight, in particular consists of plastic for 75-95 percent by weight, and more particularly consists of plastic for 80-95 percent by weight, while in particular the plastic consists of plastic fibers and/or plastic filaments. Preferably it holds that at least one sheet is made of a porous material.
In particular, it holds that at least one sheet is made of a nonwoven material. In order for at least one sheet to be form -retaining, it holds here in particular that the nonwoven material consists of a plastic for at least 50-70 percent by weight, excluding 70 percent by weight or for at least 70 percent by weight, while in particular the plastic consists of plastic fibers and/or plastic filaments. To put it differently, it holds here on balance, in
particular, that the nonwoven material consists of a plastic for at least 50 percent by weight, while in particular the plastic consists of plastic fibers and/or plastic filaments.
More particularly, it holds here that the nonwoven material consists of a plastic for at least 60-70 percent by weight, excluding 70 percent by weight, or for at least 70 percent by weight, while in particular the plastic consists of plastic fibers and/or plastic filaments. Stated differently, it holds here on balance, more in particular, that the nonwoven material consists of a plastic for at least 60 percent by weight, while in particular the plastic consists of plastic fibers and/or plastic filaments. More preferably, it holds that the nonwoven material consists of a plastic for at least 70 percent by weight, preferably for at least 80 percent by weight, and more preferably for at least 90 percent by weight. The nonwoven material can here be present in a form of fibers and/or in a form of filaments.
Preferably, it holds that at least one sheet consists of a plastic for 50-70 percent by weight excluding 70 percent by weight or for 70-100 percent by weight. On balance it holds therefore that preferably at least one sheet consists of a plastic for 50-100 percent by weight. Here it holds in particular that the plastic consists of plastic fibers and/or plastic filaments.
More preferably, it holds that at least one sheet consists of a plastic for 60- 70 percent by weight excluding 70 percent by weight or for 70-100 percent by weight. On balance it holds therefore that more preferably at least one sheet consists of a plastic for 60-100 percent by weight. Here it holds in particular that the plastic consists of plastic fibers and/or plastic filaments.
Still more preferably, it holds that at least one sheet consists of a plastic for 70-100 percent by weight, in particular consists of plastic for 75-95 percent by weight and more in particular consists of plastic for 80-95 percent by weight. Here it holds in particular that the plastic consists of plastic fibers and/or plastic filaments. An advantage of a nonwoven material is that it can form a good fluid sealing with the holder when the nonwoven material is moist as a result of the supply of the fluid. When the nonwoven material is made of a plastic at least for a part, it may typically have been made form-retaining through a heat treatment. The plastic can consist, for example, of polymers which comprise PE, PET, PETP, coPET, LLDPE, CPP, PLA and/or PP. The plastic is present in the nonwoven material in the form of, for instance, plastic fibers and/or plastic filaments.
In particular, it holds that at least one sheet is furthermore provided with cellulose fibers and/or cellulose filaments. Still more in particular, at least one sheet consists of the above-mentioned plastic fibers and/or plastic filaments and the cellulose fibers and/or cellulose filaments. The nonwoven material can thus consist of a combination of plastic fibers and/or plastic filaments and cellulose fibers and/or cellulose filaments. Also, it may be that the cellulose fibers are covered with a plastic coating. An advantage of the embodiments mentioned is that at least one sheet has the optical properties of filtering paper more. This last may be so because, measured in percent by weight, more plastic or plastic fibers and/or plastic filaments are present than cellulose fibers and/or cellulose filaments, while, in particular, the nonwoven material has preferably undergone a heat treatment to increase form retention.
According to a practical embodiment, it holds that the density of at least one sheet is in the range of 150-300 g/m2, preferably 180-270 g/m2 and more preferably 200-250 g/m2. At these densities, the form retention concerned can be reahzed well. In particular, it holds that at least one sheet is made of a polyester fiber, in particular of Smash™ material. Preferably, it holds that at least one sheet is made of SMASH™ 200 g/m2.
In particular, it holds alternatively that at least one sheet is made of Polylactic Acid (PLA) fibers. Preferably, it holds that the second sheet is made of PLA 200-250 g/m2. Also, it holds preferably that at least one sheet is made of 100% Polylactic Acid (PLA) fibers and possibly derivatives. Owing to this, at least one sheet is at least substantially completely biodegradable after use.
Preferably it holds that the enforcing sheet is non-detachably bonded and especially heat-bonded to the inner sides of the first sheet and/or the second sheet. This ensures force traversing and eases the method of producing the pad. Preferably, permeability of the connecting portions for the fluid is provided. Preferably it holds that a length L of the enforcing sheet measured along a meandering direction intersecting the central axis is bigger than a length L of the pad measured along the same meandering direction. Preferably and with regard to the plane of the pad (when seen from above), this is provided for all directions directed to the central axis starting from the outer sealing seam. By providing such a length arrangement of the enforcing sheet and the pad, the meandering form of the enforcing sheet can be easily provided during the preparation process of the pad. This also relates to the feature that preferably the area of the enforcing sheet when spread even, is bigger than the area of the pad along the pad's major plane. Also, this applies to the feature that preferably the area of the enforcing sheet when spread even, is bigger than the area of the bigger one of the first and the second sheet when spread even. Preferably it holds that the receiving chambers are arranged beside each other with regard to the pad's major plane. It turns out that by such an arrangement the form-retaining ability is provided in a reliable manner.
Preferably it holds that the enforcing sheet and/or the first sheet and/or the second sheet are formed by a deep-drawing or similar forming process. This especially eases providing the beverage preparation product to such a preformed sheet or allows forming and providing of the receiving chambers also with included beverage preparation product during the forming process. Preferably it holds that the second sheet that extends within the contours of the sealing seam is of dish-shaped design while the first sheet is of a flat design or vice versa. This has a further advantage that the coffee pad is self- locating when it is placed in a holder having a shape corresponding to the pad. Also it is possible that the first and the second sheet have a dish- shaped design. The intention is then preferably for the second sheet to come to rest on the bottom of such a holder. Especially with regard to the meandering arrangement of the enforcing sheet it turned out that forces are reliably transferred without bending the pad during use or normal handling. Preferably it holds that the enforcing sheet is formed in such a way that it is extending from the sealing seam in meandering direction to the central axis, at first following the inner side of the second sheet and being attached to, traversing to the inner side of the first sheet, following the inner side of said first sheet and being attached to. With regard to the central axis, on the left side and on the right side of this axis, when the pad is seen in a cross section, this meandering arrangement is preferably continued in a mirrored way mirrored at the central axis. In combination with the above dish-shaped second sheet, the edge areas of the second sheet, preferably comprising at least part of an upstanding side wall and at least part of a connected bottom wall of these dish-shaped sheet, are double layered, due to the connecting portion, e.g. the layered arrangement of the enforcing sheet and the second sheet, enhancing the stability of the pad in the areas close to the sealing seam.
Preferably it holds that the first and the second sheet within the contours of the sealing seam comprise a smoothly running inner and/or outer surface. This guarantees a consistent and smooth fluid transportation. Preferably it holds that the beverage preparation product consists of a product to be extracted, more particularly of ground coffee. It turned out that with this beverage preparation product reliable form-retaining ability can be guaranteed in an improved manner. Preferably it holds that the enforcing sheet is arranged in such a way that forces bending the pad along its major plane are traversed as tensile forces to the first and/or the second sheet. This enhances the form-retaining ability. Furthermore, it holds preferably that the at least one of the first, second and enforcing sheet is of flexible design. The material of at least one of the first, second and enforcing sheet can be made, as mentioned before, of filtering paper known per se. In particular, it holds that the material is provided with at least 70% of cellulose fibers and/or cellulose filaments, more preferably with at least 80% of cellulose fibers and/or cellulose filaments, still more preferably with at least 90% of cellulose fibers and/or cellulose filaments, while possible for the rest, the material, of at least one of the first, the second and the enforcing sheet is made of plastic polymers, as also mentioned in the already referenced PTC application PCT/NL 2013/050510, and in particular in the form of plastic fibers and/or plastic filaments. The material preferably comprises less than 30% of plastic polymers. The material may also be made from Polylactic Acid (PLA) fibers for 100%. Also, the material can consist of PLA and paper, for example, 25% PLA and 75% paper. These polymers may be of a same kind as has been discussed for a second sheet mentioned in the above referenced PCT application PCT/NL 2013/050510. More particularly it holds here that the first, second and enforcing sheet is manufactured from a same sheet or same sheets. As an alternative or additional embodiment of the invention it preferably holds that the enforcing sheet meanders in such a way, that at least part of the connecting portions are extending with regard to their major extension direction in a radial manner in direction to the central axis. In a plain view the connecting portions and the intersecting portions are defining preferable the geometric form of a segment of a circle. Especially the connecting portions can be arranged in such a way that those portions arranged on the first sheet are directed to a common especially central intersection point which is preferably arranged on or in the vicinity of the central axis. The same is alternatively or in combination applicable to the connecting portions arranged on the second sheet. Preferably it holds that the enforcing sheet meanders in a direction surrounding the central axis preferably oscillating in a direction parallel to said central axis. Preferably it holds that the enforcing sheet meanders in a tangential direction to the sealing seam preferably oscillating in a direction parallel to the central axis. Points of Maximum oscillation along this meandering direction are preferably having the same distance from the central axis and/or from the sealing seam.
Points of maximum oscillation could be arranged at the inner edge portion of the sealing seam wherein the oscillation degreases in direction to the central axis. It is also possible to provide the enforcement sheet in such a way that the points of maximum oscillation are arranged in-between the inner edge of the sealing seam and the central axis, wherein oscillation is then decreasing in a radial direction to the sealing seam and/or to the central axis. Preferably the oscillation of the meandering is decreasing in a direction towards the central axis and especially in a constant manner, wherein preferably in the area of the central axis no oscillation of the meandering is provided. It has to be understood, that features relating to an meandering arrangement of the enforcing sheet constituting especially annular directed connecting portions are also applicable to an meandering arrangement of the enforcing sheet constituting connecting portions with a segment of circles-arrangement and vice versa.
The system according to the invention is, to that end, provided with the inventive pad explained herein and with a beverage preparation apparatus e.g. a coffee-maker which is provided with a holder for receiving the pad, a cover for closing off the holder, and fluid means for generating a fluid flow under pressure, wherein the holder is provided with at least one beverage outflow opening and the cover is provided with at least one fluid inflow opening which are in fluid communication with the fluid means for supplying the fluid flow to the fluid openings so that the fluid is supplied under pressure to the first sheet of the pad so that the fluid is pressed through the pad for the preparation of the beverage in the pad, the beverage leaving the pad via the second sheet to proceed to leave the holder via the at least one beverage outflow opening.
Preferably, it holds here that the holder is provided with a bowl- shaped inner space, which is bounded by the bottom and an upstanding sidewall of the holder, wherein the bottom consists of an outer horizontally directed ring-shaped bottom part which adjoins the sidewall and an inner dish-shaped bottom part, wherein the dish-shaped bottom part adjacent the ring-shaped bottom part slopes downwards in a direction directed away from the sidewall and wherein the at least one outflow opening is provided in the dish-shaped bottom part. As mentioned, the pad rests on the bottom, while the second sheet extends along the bottom to near the upstanding edge. Preferably, the sealing seam of the pad then rests on the ring-shaped bottom part. In particular, it holds here that in the dish-shaped bottom part grooves are provided which form a fluid path to the at least one beverage outflow opening, while the grooves extend exclusively under the beverage preparation product in the pad. The portion of the bottom that is not provided with grooves, more particularly the ring-shaped bottom part, can then form a fluid sealing with that portion of the second sheet that rests on said areas of the bottom when the pad becomes moist through the fluid. Preferably it holds that the first and/or the second sheet is shaped such that it is provided with at least one groove or a multiplicity of grooves especially to increase the form retention of the second sheet, at least one groove for instance extending in a radial direction and/or radial spiralling direction or similar winding radial direction of the pad and/or extending in a circle or similar path around an axis, in an especially coincentric pattern or in a non coincentric pattern, all paths closed or open on themselves, and/or extending in a winding path or curved path and especially a helical or similar path and/or extending around an axial axis of the pad, for instance in the sealing seam or on the sheet inside an area enclosed by the sealing seam and preferably around an axis so that it is extending along said axis with a smaller diameter than the sealing seam. This especially provides a form-retaining or form-enforced sheet and therefore a form -retaining or form-enforced pad also without the applied enforcement layer.
Beside enforcing abilities the grooves can also provide fluid guiding means. The before mentioned grooves can be recesses, projections, folds or similar elevations and/or recessions. They can extend in circles or similar pathes around an axis, in coincentric patterns or in non coincentric patterns. The paths of extension can be closed or open on themselves. They can extend in winding paths or curved paths and especially helical or similar paths. It is possible to provide the grooves with uniform
arrangement; however it is also possible that the grooves are changing their groove depth, width, shape etc. It is especially possible that the grooves are increasing and/or decreasing along their major extension direction.
With regard to the grooves it preferably holds that the sheet comprising the grooves is formed like the bowl of a cup cake, comprising especially meandering grooves extending form a central area to the rim portions of the bowl, ending up in or before the sealing seam.
In particular, it holds that the at least one outflow opening is provided with a nozzle for generating a jet of the beverage. With the aid the jet, in a manner known per se, air can be beaten into the prepared beverage for obtaining a beverage with a fine-bubble foam layer when it has been received in, for example, a cup. To this end, the system may for instance be provided with an impact surface impacted by the jet for beating air into the beverage to obtain a beverage with a fine-bubble foam layer.
In particular, it holds that the fluid is supplied to the first sheet with a pressure of 0.9 to 1.5 bar above atmospheric pressure. At this relatively low pressure, still a beverage with a good fine-bubble foam layer can be obtained that is comparable to beverages that are prepared under high pressure, as is the case with a coffee bed through which hot water is caused to flow under a pressure in excess of 10 bar.
The pad according to the invention is filled with a beverage preparation product for preparing beverage, the beverage preparation product comprising a product to be extracted with a fluid (and/or a product soluble in a fluid). The product to be extracted with a fluid can consist of, for example, ground coffee or tea-leaves. A product soluble in a fluid can consist of, for example, milk powder, chocolate milk powder and the like. Different beverage preparation product can be deposited to the chambers, either in a mixture or on their own. It is possible to provide at least one chamber with a soluble beverage preparation product and/or at least one chamber with an extractable beverage preparation product. Preferably the outer chamber(s), with regard to a central axis, is comprising a soluble beverage preparation product, e.g. milk powder. Preferably the inner chamber(s), surrounded by the outer chamber(s) is comprising an extractable beverage preparation product, e.g. ground coffee.
According to a particular embodiment of the system according to the invention, the system is further provided with a known coffee pad (such as a prior art coffee pad as defined in EP 904 717 Al) provided with an inner space which is filled with ground coffee, wherein the inner space is formed by a top sheet and a bottom sheet which are interconnected adjacent their longitudinal edges, wherein the top sheet and the bottom sheet also form an outer side of the pad and are each made of flexible filtering paper and wherein the coffee pad and the holder are tailored to each other so that the coffee pad can be received in the holder for preparing coffee, such that, in use, the fluid is supplied under pressure to the top side of the pad and is pressed through the pad so that the fluid flows through the top sheet, whereby in the pad a coffee extract is formed which proceeds to leave the pad via the bottom sheet and wherein the coffee extract proceeds to flow out of the holder via the beverage outflow opening of the holder. With such a system, a user can therefore use, as desired, the known coffee pad and the pad with the form-retaining second sheet in one and the same coffee-maker.
In detail it preferably holds that a fluid sealing is present between the second sheet and the bottom of the holder, which fluid sealing prevents the fluid which is supplied to the first sheet of the pad from flowing around the pad to the beverage outflow opening.
It preferably holds that the holder is provided with a bowl-shaped inner space, which is bounded by the bottom and an upstanding sidewall of the holder, wherein the bottom consists of an outer horizontally directed ring- shaped bottom part which adjoins the sidewall and an inner dish-shaped bottom part which adjoins an inner edge of the ring-shaped bottom part, wherein the dish-shaped bottom part adjacent the ring-shaped bottom part slopes downwards in a direction directed away from the sidewall and to the inside of the holder and wherein the at least one beverage outflow opening is provided in the dish-shaped bottom part. It preferably holds that the ring-shaped bottom part is directed horizontally.
It preferably holds that an underside of the sidewall is connected with the ring-shaped bottom part adjacent an outer edge of the ring-shaped bottom part.
It preferably holds that the pad rests on the bottom, while the second sheet extends along the bottom to near the upstanding wall.
It preferably holds that the sealing seam of the pad rests on the ring-shaped bottom part.
It preferably holds that the second sheet has a shape corresponding to the shape of the bottom of the holder.
It preferably holds that in the dish-shaped bottom part grooves are provided which form a fluid path to the at least one beverage outflow opening, while the grooves extend exclusively under the beverage preparation product in the pad.
It preferably holds that the dish shaped second bottom part comprises an inner flat bottom part, with the grooves provided in the inner flat bottom part.
It preferably holds that a fluid sealing is present between the second sheet and the bottom of the holder, there where the bottom is not provided with grooves, which fluid sealing prevents the fluid which is supplied to the first sheet of the pad from flowing around the pad to the beverage outflow opening.
It preferably holds that the at least one outflow opening is provided with a nozzle for generating a jet of the beverage.
It preferably holds that the system is further provided with an impact surface which is impacted by the jet for beating air into the beverage to obtain a beverage with a fine-bubble foam layer.

It preferably holds that a bottom of the holder is made of a hard plastic or metal and is of smooth design.
It preferably holds that the system is further provided with a coffee pad provided with an inner space which is filled with ground coffee, wherein the inner space is formed by a first sheet and a second sheet which are interconnected adjacent their longitudinal edges, wherein the first sheet and the second sheet also form an outer side of the pad and are each made of flexible filtering paper and wherein the coffee pad and the holder are tailored to each other so that the coffee pad can be received in the holder for preparing coffee, wherein the second sheet extends over a bottom of the holder and wherein, in use, the fluid is supplied under pressure to the first sheet of the pad and is pressed through the pad so that the fluid flows through the first sheet, whereby in the pad a coffee extract is formed which proceeds to leave the pad via the second sheet and wherein the coffee extract proceeds to flow out of the holder via the beverage outflow opening of the holder, wherein preferably the first sheet is of flat design and the second sheet has the shape of the bottom.
As mentioned the invention also relates to the use of a form retaining pad as described herein wherein the pad is placed in a holder which is provided with at least one beverage outflow opening, the holder with the pad therein is closed off with a cover which is provided with at least one fluid inflow opening, and a fluid is supplied under pressure to the at least one fluid inflow opening so that the fluid is supplied via the first sheet to the beverage preparation product in the pad for preparing the beverage and wherein the beverage leaves the pad via the second sheet, wherein the beverage proceeds to leave the holder via the at least one beverage outflow opening. For redundancy reasons further specifications of said use are omitted here wherein all these specifications can be taken from the passages dealing with the inventive system. More detailed specification can also be taken from the before referenced PCT-application PCT/NL2013/050510. Therefore it preferably holds that the use of the form retaining pad is further based on the specifications and features of the inventive system provided with the inventive form retaining pad according and a coffee-maker as described herein.
As mentioned the invention also relates to the a method for preparing a beverage with a form retaining pad as described herein, wherein the pad is placed in a holder which is provided with at least one beverage outflow opening, the holder with the pad therein is closed off with a cover which is provided with at least one fluid inflow opening, and a fluid is supplied under pressure to the at least one fluid opening so that the fluid is supplied via the first sheet to the beverage preparation product in the pad for preparing the beverage and wherein the beverage leaves the pad via the second sheet, wherein the beverage proceeds to leave the holder via the at least one beverage outflow opening.
For redundancy reasons further specifications of said method are omitted here wherein all these specifications can be taken from the passages dealing with the inventive system. More detailed specification can also be taken from the before referenced PCT-application PCT/NL2013/050510. Therefore it preferably holds that the method for preparing a beverage with the form retaining pad as described herein is further based on the specifications and features of the inventive system provided with the inventive form retaining pad according and a coffee-maker as described herein.
The invention also relates to a method for making a form retaining pad according to any one of the preceding claims, comprising the following steps: a) Providing an intermediate enforcing sheet made of a filter material; b) Depositing a beverage preparation product for preparing the beverage to a first side of the enforcing sheet, wherein the beverage
preparation product comprises a product to be extracted with a fluid and/or a product soluble in a fluid;
c) Arranging a second sheet made of a filter material to the first side of the enforcing sheet thereby covering the beverage preparation product;
d) Connecting and especially bonding edge portions of the second sheet to edge portions of the enforcing sheet at interconnecting portions. e) Connecting and especially bonding the second sheet to the enforcing sheet at connecting portions constituting at least a first product receiving chamber comprising the beverage preparation product; f) Depositing a further beverage preparation product for preparing the beverage on a second side of the enforcing sheet, wherein the beverage preparation product comprises a product to be extracted with a fluid and/or a product soluble in a fluid;
g) Arranging a first sheet made of a filter material to the second side of the enforcing sheet thereby covering the further beverage preparation product;
h) Connecting and especially bonding edge portions of the first sheet to the edge portions of the enforcing sheet at interconnecting portions. i) Connecting and especially bonding the first sheet to the enforcing sheet at connecting portions constituting at least a second product receiving chamber comprising the further beverage preparation product. It has to be mentioned that with regard to the method described herein, all relevant features and subjects already mentioned with regard to the inventive form-retaining pad are applicable.
By arranging the intermediate enforcing sheet as a mid-layer and
depositing beverage preparation products on both sides of the intermediate enforcing sheet, and preferably in such a way that the enforcing sheet meanders between the first and the second sheet, a form-retaining pad can be easily prepared by simply connecting first and second sheets respectively to the respective sides covering the deposited beverage preparation product and constituting the respective product receiving chambers.
Connection and especially detachable connection of the different sheets can be provided by use of different methods, e.g. heat bonding, gluing, or similar. Preferably it holds that the method for making the form-retaining pad further comprises the step of: j) forming and especially deep-drawing or pressing the enforcing sheet to provide part of at least one receiving chamber on at least a first side of the enforcing sheet, wherein said part of at least one receiving chamber is arranged to receive the beverage preparation product. Preferably the step j) is performed before the step b).
Said part of at least one receiving chamber can be a dish-shaped recess or a similar recess, providing accommodation for the beverage preparation product. This forming can especially be done by deep-drawing or pressing the part of the at least one receiving chamber with a respectively arranged stamp or punch. Preferably the form of the at least one receiving chamber is provided in such a way that the respective first sheet to cover the provided accommodation is formed in a flat shape. Preferably, when viewed from above, the part of the at least one receiving chamber has an annular form, as connection of the first sheet is then easily and reliably possible. It is possible to provide multiple of these recesses for receiving at least part of the beverage preparation product, which are then preferably arranged distant from each other. Preferably the product receiving chambers are arranged adjacent to each other extending in a direction parallel to the major extending direction of the pad.
Further it holds that the method comprises the step of: k) forming and especially deep-drawing the bonded sheets received by step e) in another and especially opposite direction as performed in the step j) to provide part of at least another receiving chamber on at least a second side of the enforcing sheet, wherein said part of at least another receiving chamber is arranged to receive the further beverage preparation product. This formed part of the at least another receiving chamber is preferably arranged abutting to the receiving chamber arranged in step j) and preferably again it preferably holds that the product receiving chambers are arranged adjacent to each other extending in a direction parallel to the major extending direction of the pad. Preferably step k) is performed before step f).
In general, the arrangement and forming respectively of the parts of the receiving chambers provides a meandering arrangement of the enforcing sheet with regard to the attached first and second sheet respectively.
Further it holds that the method comprises the step of: 1) turning the bonded sheets received by step e) upside-down before performing step k). By this turning step, the position of the further beverage preparation product is more easily possible.
Further it holds that in step b) and/or j) the enforcing sheet is placed in a mould so that it obtains a predetermined shape. This shape can be of different kind, as mentioned before, and is preferably arranged that the beverage preparation product can be deposited having a clear and sharp outer edge. This prevents parts of the preparation products being deposited between intended connection surfaces at the connecting portions between the enforcing sheet and the first and second sheet, respectively or the interconnecting portions. By preforming parts of at least one receiving chamber arranged so that the beverage preparation product can be deposited therein, depositing without additional forming means, for example for arranging the deposited beverage preparation product in an intended form is possible. Preferably the forming and preferably a congruent pressing tool, like a plunger or a stamp, is provided in such a way to define at least part of the form of the receiving chambers. Multiple forms can be chosen here, similar to the ones mentioned before.
Preferably it holds that in step c) and/or d) and/or e) the enforcing sheet and/or the second sheet is placed in a mould so that it retains a
predetermined shape and especially a shape arranged to receive the further beverage preparation product. Here, the same advantages and features are applicable, respectively.
Preferably it holds that in at least of the steps f) to i) the bond of the enforcing sheet and the second sheet are placed in a mould so that it obtains and/or retains a predetermined shape. Again, the same advantages apply and the same further embodiments are applicable.

shows a further embodiment of an enforcing sheet in an extracted isometric view. In the following for similar or identical elements identical reference signs are used, wherein sometimes for distinction, high entities are used.
Figs. 1-3 show one embodiment of a form-retaining pad 1 according to the invention in a cross-sectional view (fig. 1) and two plain views (figs 2 and 3, wherein in fig. 3 interconnecting portions and connecting portions are indicated by dotted patterns). The form-retaining and especially rigid pad 1 is arranged for use in a coffee-maker for preparing at least one or two cups of beverage, for example coffee or similar beverage, and is provided with an envelope 2, which is constituted by at least two sheets, namely a first sheet 2A and a second sheet 2B, which are interconnected preferably at their edge portions 8A, 8B. This interconnecting portion 9 is forming a sealing seam 10. An inner space 4, constituted by the at least two first and second sheets 2A, 2B is comprising a beverage preparation product 6A, 6B, wherein the beverage preparation product comprises a product to be extracted with a fluid and/or a product soluble in a fluid.
The first sheet 2A and the second sheet 2B each form a filter, which can be passed by a fluid and which forms a barrier to the beverage preparation product 6, wherein, in use, with the coffee-maker a fluid such as water is supplied under pressure to the pad so that the fluid is pressed through the pad for obtaining the beverage, which then leaves the pad. Preferably, the fluid enters the pad 1 via the first sheet 2A and leaves the pad via the second sheet 2B.
The pad 1 further comprises at least one intermediate enforcing sheet 3, which is meandering amongst the first sheet 2A and second sheet 2B and which is being connected at alternating connecting portions 5 to inner sides 12A, 12B of the first sheet 2A and the second sheet 2B respectively. The connecting portions are arranged within the inner space 4 of the pad 1.
Further, the connecting portions are arranged in such a way that at least two product receiving chambers 11A, 1 IB are constituted within the inner space each comprising part of the beverage preparation product 6, namely the parts 6 A and 6B. Preferably said first sheet 2 A and/or the second sheet 2B and/or the enforcing sheet 3 are made of a flexible, especially with regard to bending around an axis co-planar to their major planes non-form- retaining or rigid material. Said material is mentioned before and can, for example, be a filter material, which is especially permeable for a fluid and furthermore forms a barrier to the beverage preparation product.
By providing a pad 1 having this arrangement, even when a fluid like water has passed through the pad watering the pad, form -retaining ability of the pad is guaranteed. This especially means that while handling the pad no intense bending of the pad occurs. For example, it is possible to provide the pad by this arrangement in such a way that when the pad is ripped at a gripping portion near the sealing seam 10 (for example on the right side of the pad as shown in fig. 1) that the opposite side of the pad (here the left side of the pad as shown in fig. 1) does not bend downwards due to gravity in an intense manner and, for example, not more than 20 mm, preferably 10 mm and more preferably 5 mm. Further it also means that no compressing above 8 mm, preferably above 5mm and most preferably above 3 mm in a vertical direction with regard to a vertical direction to the envelope of the pad occurs during the above normal handling.
Figs. 2 and 3 are showing plan views of the embodiment of the pad 1 of fig. 1, wherein in fig. 3 connecting portions 5 and interconnecting portions 9 constituting the sealing seam 10 are marked by dotted shading. As can be seen, the pad 1 is of disk-shaped design or similar round-shape design, while the longitudinal edges of the first sheet and the second sheet are each in a flat plane (see fig. 1). Further, these longitudinal edges have the shape of a circle and have a diameter Lp preferable within the range of 45 - 90 mm, preferably 70 - 80 mm, more preferably 73 - 76 mm, and in particular of approximately 74,4 mm. This diameter is shown in fig. 1 as reference sign Lp. The edge portions 8C of the enforcing sheet 3 are attached to the interconnecting portions 9 of the first sheet 2A and the second sheet 2B and are especially interconnected between the edge portions 8A, 8B of the first sheet 2 A and the second sheet 2B.
In figs. 1 and 3 a central axis Ac is shown. With regard to said central axis Ac, which is extending vertically to the pad's major plane (see fig. 1) and surrounded by the sealing seam 10 (see fig. 3), the enforcing sheet 3 meanders from its edge portions 8C in a meandering direction and especially in a radial meandering direction DM to the central axis Ac. The meandering direction is indicated in fig. 1 as reference sign DM. The width w of the edge portions 8 can be understood as preferably similar to the width of the sealing seam 10.
In the embodiment of fig. 1 at least one product receiving chamber 11B is arranged surrounding said central axis Ac. Further, it could be possible to provide at least another product receiving chamber, which is surrounding said product receiving chamber 1 IB. Another product receiving chamber
11 A is arranged in such a way that the central axis Ac is extending through the same. In detail and as can be seen in fig. 1, the product receiving chamber 11A is a centrally arranged product receiving chamber surrounded by the further receiving chamber 11B.
Furthermore, at least one connecting portion 5B is arranged surrounding the central axis Ac. In this embodiment all connecting portions 5 are arranged in relation to the central axis inside of the sealing seam 10. In detail, the interconnecting portion 9, which is forming the sealing seam 10, is directly followed by the connecting portion 5B followed by a traversing portion 7 and the other connecting portion 5A. As the connecting portions and receiving chambers are annularly or round-shaped arranged around the central axis 8C, this arrangement is then continuing vice versa, e.g. when following indicated meandering axis AM (fig. 4) which is directed in one of multiple of the meandering directions and is disclosed in fig. 1. These multiple meandering directions are also indicated in fig. 4. As the shown embodiment of the pad 1 has a circular disk shape, meandering of the enforcing sheet 3 is identical with regard to all these directions DM. The enforcing sheet 3 can however also be provided with different meanderings with regard to different directions DM.
As can be seen in fig. 1, at least part of two following alternating connecting portions 5A, 5B are extending in planes basically parallel to each other and especially parallel to the pad's major planes, coplanar to the shown meandering axis AM. The enforcing sheet 3 thereby extends between the at least two following alternating connecting portions 5A and 5B of the first sheet 2A and the second sheet 2B, respectively, at an angle a basically between 30° and 60°, preferably between 40° and 50°, and still more preferably of 45°, when seen in a cross section to the pad according to fig. 1. With this embodiment said connecting portions 5B, which are arranged closest to the sealing seam 10, are arranged at the inner side 12B of that sheet, where the fluid leaves the pad 1 during beverage preparation. This sheet with this embodiment is preferably the second sheet 2B.
With an arrangement as mentioned above a form -retaining sheet can be provided without use of form -retaining material itself. Especially the arrangement of the different sheets 2, 3 and the abutment of the beverage preparation products 6 to the sheets 2, 3 guarantee form-retaining ability in a reliable manner.
With this embodiment the product receiving chambers 11 are separated from each other in such a way that the beverage preparation product 6 of one chamber 11A cannot shift to the other chamber 1 IB or vice versa. This is especially provided by the feature that the enforcing sheet is non- detachably bonded and especially heat -bonded to the inner sides 12A, 12B of the first sheet 2 A and/or the second sheet 2B. In detail, the length LE (not shown) of the enforcing sheet 3 measured along the meandering direction DM following the meandering and intersecting the central axis Ac is bigger than a length and here the diameter Lp of the pad 1 measured along the same meandering direction DM (see fig. 1).
For providing a meandering arrangement within the inner space 4 of the pad 1, the area of the enforcing sheet 3 when spread even is bigger than the area of the pad 1 along the pad's major plane. Furthermore, preferably the area of the enforcing sheet 7 when spread even is bigger than the area of the bigger one of the first and the second sheets 2A, 2B when spread even. Here, the bigger one is the second sheet 2B.
As it is going to be explained in more detail in the following, the enforcing sheet 3 and/or the first sheet 2A and/or the second sheet 2B are formed by deep-drawing, pressing, thermoforming or a similar forming process. With this embodiment, for example the meandering and forcing sheet is formed during the preparation process of the pad 1. The same holds for the second sheet 2B. As can be seen in fig. 1, the part of the second sheet 2B that extends within the contours of the sealing seam 10 is of dish-shaped design, while the first sheet is of flat design. These could, of course, also be provided vice versa. If applicable both, the first and the second sheet can be form disk shaped or like the second sheet mentioned before.
The enforcing sheet 7 is formed in such a way that it is extending from the sealing seam 10 in meandering direction to the central axis Ac, at first following the inner side 12B of the second sheet 2B and being attached to, traversing to the inner side 12A of the first sheet 2A, following the inner side of said first sheet and being attached to. As mentioned before with regard to the central axis, this meandering arrangement is then continued vice versa up to the opposite portion of the sealing seam 10. The mentioned starting portion and the end portion of this meandering are indicated by reference sign 23 and 23' in fig. 4. Preferably similar portions are provided all around the pad's sealing seam 10, so that from all directions the described meandering arrangement is provided. This is indicated by reference signs 23", 23"', DM ", DM'".
In the connecting portions the enforcing sheet is non-detachably connected to the respective sheets, guaranteeing especially tensile connection for transferring forces acting on the pad 1 and being traversed. As can be seen in fig. 1, this arrangement preferably leads to a framework arrangement reliably traversing forces acting on the pad 1 during normal operation and especially handling of the pad while introducing it or discharging it to and from a beverage preparation apparatus.
For guaranteeing smooth fluid travelling through the pad, the first and the second sheet within the contours of the sealing seam 10 preferably comprise a smoothly running inner and/or outer surface. For guaranteeing continuous fluid transfer in, through and out of the pad, the first sheet and/or the second sheet and/or the enforcing sheet are preferably made of filtering paper. Especially with the beverage preparation product consisting of a product to be extracted and more particularly of ground coffee, this guarantees an optimized beverage produced. In detail, the enforcing sheet 3 is arranged in such a way that forces bending the pad along its major plane are transferred as tensile forces to the first and/or the second sheet and especially to the edge portions of the pad. Figs. 4 to 16 are disclosing one possible method for preparing the pad 1 as described before according to the invention, wherein this pad is disclosed with fig. 16 after leaving the preparation apparatus used for producing the pad.
During a first step of the method for making the form-retaining pad, for example the form-retaining pad according to fig. 1 or according to fig. 16, an intermediate enforcing sheet 3 is provided, which is, for example, made of a filter material. The intermediate enforcing sheet can be provided on a first mould 70 comprising a recess portion 72, which is here bowl-shaped. On a first side 13 of the enforcing sheet 13 a beverage preparation product 6A is deposited (see fig. 7), wherein the beverage preparation product 6A comprises a product to be extracted with a fluid and/or a product soluble in a fluid, for example ground coffee.
Before depositing the beverage preparation product 6 A to the first side 13 of the enforcing sheet 3, the enforcing sheet 3 can be pre-formed and especially deep-drawn or pressed (see fig. 6) to provide a scrape 25 being part of at least one receiving chamber 21 (see fig. 9) on at least the first side 13, wherein said part of at least one receiving chamber is arranged to receive the beverage preparation product 6A (see fig. 7). For forming this scrape 25 being part of the receiving chamber, here a first stamp 76 is used being formed complementary to the shape of the recess 72. By use of this first stamp 76 and the mould 70, the enforcing sheet 3 is provided with the scrape 25 for receiving the beverage preparation product in an easy and reliable manner.
As can be seen with fig. 8 and 9, after depositing the beverage preparation product 6A into the scrape 25, supported by the recess 72 of the mould 70, a second sheet 2B is arranged to the first side 13 of the enforcing sheet 3 thereby covering the beverage preparation product 6A and the scrape 25 being part of the at least one product receiving chamber produced in the following. The second sheet 2B is abutted to the first side 13 of the enforcing sheet via its second side 12B.
After that, edge portions 8B of the second sheet 2B are connected and especially bonded and more especially heat-bonded to edge portions 8C of the enforcing sheet 3 constituting part 29 of interconnecting portion 9 (see figs.1,3, 15 and 16). At the end of the preparation method these portions 29 will be part of the interconnecting portions 9 and the sealing seam 10 (see fig. 1, 3, 15 and 16).
In a further step the second sheet 2B and the enforcing sheet 3 are connected, bonded and especially heat -bonded at part of connecting portions 27 constituting at least a first product receiving chamber 11A comprising the beverage preparation product 6A. These parts 27 are in the later process parts of the connecting portions 5B (see fig. 1, 3, 15 and 16). For providing this connecting step, the mould 70 is provided with abutment portions 74A, 74 B abutting with a sealing plate 78 during the connecting step.
As can be seen in fig. 9, the abutment portions 74A; 74B are arranged in an annular manner, the outer abutment portion 47A surrounding the inner abutment portion 74B by including a non-abutment portion 74C. Due to this non-abutment portion 74C the second sheet 2B and the enforcing sheet 3 are not interconnected during the before mentioned method steps in this particular area. The sealing plate 78 can be arranged for sealing and connecting the second sheet 2B and the enforcing sheet 3 respectively and/or for compressing the beverage preparation product 6A so that a compressed beverage preparation product 6A is arranged in the receiving chamber 11A.
As can be seen in fig. 10, the bonded sheets 2B, 3 received by the before explained connecting step are turned upside-down before they are arranged on a second mould 80. With this upside-down arrangement a further beverage preparation product 6B for preparing the beverage is deposited on a second side 19 of the enforcing sheet 3, wherein said beverage preparation product 6B comprises a product to be extracted with a fluid and/or a product soluble in a fluid (see fig. 12). The second mould 80 also comprises a bowl-shaped or similar shaped recess 82, wherein a complementary -formed second stamp 86 is used for forming and especially deep-drawing the bonded sheets 2B and 3 arranged on the second mould 80 for forming a further part 21 of a further product receiving chamber 11B (see fig. 14). The forming is processed in another and especially opposite direction as performed in fig. 6, the step of providing the scrape 25 being part of the receiving chamber 11A, wherein said part 21 of at least another receiving chamber 1 IB is arranged to receive the further beverage preparation product 6B. This arrangement and the deposited beverage preparation product respectively are shown in fig. 12.
The second stamp 86 could also be provided as a heat seahng stamp, so that in the respective stamping portions (see fig. 11), where the second stamp 86 presses against the recess 82 of the second mould 80, the abutting sheets 2B, 3 are especially non-detachably connected, heat -bonded or similar sealed with each other. The result of this connection step is the
establishment of the connecting portion 5B, also shown in fig. 1, 15 and 16. Preferably, the simultaneous connecting and deep-drawing step is
performed before the beverage preparation product 6B is deposited to the second side 19 of the enforcing sheet 3.
Preferably, the arrangement and especially the connection between the sheets 2B, 3 is arranged in such a way that the bonded sheets are obtaining and retaining a predetermined shape, which in this embodiment is complementary to the shape of the second recess 82. Preferably he same applies with regard to the form and shape received by the forming process of figs. 6 - 9.
As shown in figs. 13 and 14, a first sheet 2A made of filter material is arranged, to the second side 19 of the enforcing sheet 3 thereby covering the deposited further beverage preparation product 6B. Thereby an inner side 12A of the first sheet 2A is facing the enforcing sheet
By use of a third stamp 88 the arranged first sheet 2A is connected and especially heat-bonded or similarly sealed to the enforcing sheet 3 and the second sheet 2B constituting the interconnecting portions 9 and the
"central" connecting portion 5A. Before or preferably during this connecting step the beverage preparation product 6B is compressed. After this connection step is finished, the prepared pad 1 can be taken out of the second mould 80 comprising an envelope 2 constituted by the first sheet 2A and a second sheet 2B connected to each other, wherein in the
constituted inner space 4 the enforcing sheet 3 is meandering amongst and be connected in the alternating connecting portions 5B, 5A to the inner sides 12A, 12B of the first sheet 2A and the second sheet 2B within the inner space 4 in such a way that at least two product receiving chambers 6 A, 6B are constituted within the inner space 4, each comprising part of the beverage preparation product 6.
In Fig. 17, with reference numeral 1 a pad for use in a coffee-maker is shown. The pad is of a type intended for preparing one or two cups of beverage. A cup of beverage can consist, for instance, of 20-200 ml of beverage, more particularly of 20-180 ml of beverage. The pad 1 is provided with an envelope 2A, 2B with an inner space 4 which is filled with a beverage preparation product 6. In this example, it holds that the envelope bounds the inner space. The beverage preparation product is intended for preparing a beverage. To this end, the beverage preparation product comprises a product to be extracted with a fluid and/or possibly a product soluble in a fluid.
In this example, it holds that the beverage preparation product comprises exclusively a product to be extracted with a fluid, more
particularly, this concerns ground coffee. The envelope is formed by a first disc-shaped sheet 2A and a second disc-shaped sheet 2B which are interconnected adjacent their longitudinal edges 8. The interconnecting portions of the first sheet 2 A and the second sheet 2B form a sealing seam 10. The sealing seam therefore has the shape of a ring. The first sheet and the second sheet each form a filter which can pass a fluid and which forms a barrier to the beverage preparation product. This makes it possible that, in use, with a coffee-maker a fluid such as water is supplied under pressure to the pad so that the fluid is pressed through the pad for obtaining a beverage which thereupon leaves the pad again. All this will be discussed in more detail with reference to Fig. 18. The pad 1 disclosed is produced almost identical to the pad 1 disclosed before (see Fig. 1 to 16). Therefor for redundancy reason it is referred to the before.
With some capsules known from the art and available on the market, rigidity is provided resulting from the dimension and in detail from the thickness of the used sheet material. The thickness of said sheets is chosen in the range of 50-600 micrometer, mostly in the range of 150-300 micrometer. The thickness of the first and/or second and/or enforcing sheets used with the embodiments according to the invention, is preferably 1.4-10 times smaller, depicted in Fig. 17 with the letter h and h'.
In this example, it holds furthermore that at least one of the sheets 2A, 2B, 3 within the contours of the sealing seam 10 is designed to be homogeneously permeable to a fluid such as water. Also, it holds in this example that at least one of said sheets within the contours of the sealing seam comprises a smoothly running inner and outer surface. In this example, it holds furthermore that at least one of the sheets
2A, 2B, 3 is of flexible design. In particular, it holds that at least one of the sheets 2A, 2B, 3 is made of filtering paper known per se. Here, it holds in this example that at least one of the sheets 2A, 2B, 3 is provided with at least 70 percent of cellulose fibers and/or cellulose filaments. The residual portion of at least one of the sheets 2A, 2B, 3 may be made of the plastics and/or plastic fibers and/or plastic filaments and/or plastic coatings mentioned. More particularly, it holds that at least one of the sheets 2A, 2B, 3 is provided with at least 80 percent by weight of cellulose, more preferably with at least 90 percent by weight of cellulose. At least one of the sheets 2A, 2B, 3 preferably comprises less than 30 percent by weight of plastic polymers.
As can be seen in Fig. 17, it holds that the part of the second sheet 2B that is within the contours of the sealing seam is of dish-shaped design. Also, it holds in this example that the first sheet is of flat design. The part of the second sheet that is within the contours of the sealing seam, as shown in Fig. 18, has a diameter denoted with d. The diameter of the whole pad is denoted with D in Fig. 18. Also, this means that the ring-shaped sealing seam 10 has a diameter of (D-d)/2. In this example, D is approximately
74.4 mm and d is approximately 61 mm. Other dimensions are conceivable for D. D can be, for instance, in the range of 45-90 mm, preferably
70-80 mm, more preferably 73-76 mm, in particular approximately 74.4 mm. In Fig. 18 system is shown in which the pad of Fig. 1, 16 and 17 is used. The system is provided with a coffee-maker 14 which is provided with a holder 16 for receiving the pad 1. Further, the coffee-maker is provided with a cover 18 for closing off the holder 16. The coffee-maker is furthermore provided with fluid means 20, 22 for generating a fluid flow under pressure. In this example, these fluid means consist of a pump 20 and a storage vessel 22 which is filled with a fluid, in this example with hot water. The
temperature of the water can be, for example, 70-98 degrees Celsius. To that end, the storage vessel 22 is provided with a heating element 24. The storage vessel 22 itself in turn may be filled from a larger storage vessel, which comprises cold water. This larger storage vessel is not shown in the drawing. The pump 20, in use, supplies hot water via a duct 26 to an inner space 28 of the cover 18. A bottom 30 of the cover is provided with a multiplicity of inflow openings 32. The holder 16 is provided with a bowl- shaped inner space 36 which is bounded by a bottom 34 of the holder and an upstanding sidewall 38 of the holder. The bottom consists of an outer horizontally directed ring-shaped bottom part 40 which adjoins the sidewall 38. Furthermore, the bottom comprises an inner dish-shaped bottom part 42, while the dish-shaped bottom part adjacent the ring-shaped bottom part slopes downwards in a direction directed away from the sidewall, to the inside of the holder. The ring-shaped bottom part is provided with an outer edge 41 which adjoins the sidewall 38 and an inner edge 43 which adjoins the dish-shaped bottom part 42. The bottom is provided with at least one outflow opening 44. This outflow opening in this example is located in the dish-shaped bottom part 42. As shown in Fig. 18, it holds that the pad 1 rests on the bottom 34, with the second sheet extending along the bottom to near the upstanding sidewall 38. The sealing seam 10 of the pad then rests on the ring-shaped bottom part 40. As can be seen, the second sheet has a shape that corresponds to the shape of the bottom of the holder. The second sheet here has a smoothly running inner and outer surface within the sealing seam. In this example, it holds furthermore that in the dish-shaped bottom part 42 grooves 46 are provided. The grooves extend exclusively under the beverage preparation product 6 in the pad. In this example, it holds that the grooves 46 are formed by a multiplicity of projections 54 of the bottom. Between the upstanding projections 54, the respective grooves are formed. According to the invention, the grooves may also be differently formed, for instance as slots provided in the bottom and extending, for instance, in radial direction towards the outflow opening 44. The bottom is at least partly of smooth design and is made of a plastic and/or metal. The upper sides of the tops are smooth, just like the rest of the bottom.
In this example, it holds that the beverage preparation product is ground coffee. As can be properly seen, the ground coffee 6 forms a coffee bed. The grooves are under the coffee bed but also within the contours of the coffee bed, i.e., within the contours of the positions where the beverage preparation product is situated in the pad. The dish-shaped bottom part comprises an inner flat bottom part shown in Fig. 18. As can be seen, the grooves extend exclusively in this inner bottom part which is flat. Further, it holds that the at least one outflow opening 44 is provided with a nozzle 47 for generating a jet of the beverage as will be further elucidated hereinafter. To this end, the system is further provided with an impact member 50 which, in use, is impacted by a jet of the beverage made. The working of the system described up to this point is as follows.
A user will first of all remove the cover 18 for placing the pad 1 of Fig. 17 (or Fig. 1 or 16) in the holder 16 of Fig. 18. Because the pad form- retaining, the pad will of itself slide into the right position as the pad is positioned in the bottom. The pad is, as it were, self-locating and ends up in the position as shown in Fig. 18. After this, the holder can be closed off with the cover as shown in Fig. 18. Thereupon a user operates the control unit 52 of the coffee-maker 14. The result is that the control unit 52 activates the pump 20. As a result, hot water is supplied from the storage vessel 22 via the duct 26 to the inner space 28 of the cover 18. This water will leave the cover 18 and flow into the holder via the inflow openings 32. The
consequence is that the water is supplied under pressure from the upper side of the pad to the first sheet of the pad. The pressure in this example is 1.1 bar above atmospheric pressure. The hot water will then penetrate via the first sheet 2A into the inner space of the pad. Here, the hot water comes into contact with the ground coffee so that the coffee beverage is formed.
The coffee beverage leaves the coffee pad via the second sheet 2B. As a result of the second sheet 2B becoming moist, it will especially form a sealing with the bottom 34, there where there are no grooves. There where the grooves are, the beverage will leave the pad. As a result of the grooves extending exclusively under the coffee bed, bypass is avoided. What is further avoided is that the hot water forms channels extending in vertical direction through the coffee bed. Such channels would preclude an optimal and efficient extraction of the ground coffee. Since, in addition, the grooves extend in a flat part of the bottom, this enables the second sheet to properly abut the bottom, so that it's the grooves that determine where the beverage can flow out of the pad. The beverage proceeds to flow via the grooves to the outflow opening 44. Because the outflow opening 44 is provided with a nozzle 47, while moreover it holds that the fluid is supplied to the pad under pressure, the coffee beverage will be formed into a jet that impacts the impact surface 50. As a result, the beverage will be atomized in a chamber 62 of the holder which is open at its underside 64. When the beverage is thereupon received in a cup, a beverage is obtained with a fine-bubble foam layer. After preparation of the beverage, the holder can be opened again by removing the cover. The pad 1 can then be removed easily in that the second sheet is still form-retaining.
In this example, it holds that the cover is provided with a sealing ring 60 which seals fluid-tightly against the upstanding sidewall 38 of the holder. It is also possible, however, that the upstanding sidewall 38 is provided with the sealing ring, this sealing ring then sealing against the cover 18. Preferably, it holds here that the first sheet is made of a same material as the second sheet. More particularly, it holds here that the first sheet, the second sheet and the enforcing sheet are made from a same sheet or same sheets. In this example, the beverage preparation product consists of ground coffee. It is also conceivable, however, that the beverage
preparation product consists of, for example, tea. (Furthermore, it is possible that the beverage preparation product consists of a product soluble in fluid or a product that forms a dispersion such as milk powder and/or cacao for preparing milk or chocolate milk.) It is also conceivable that the beverage preparation product is provided with one of the extractable products mentioned or a different type of extractable product in combination with a fluid-soluble product. The fluid-soluble product in turn may consist of milk powder or a flavor enhancer. Also, it is conceivable that the pad is used in a different type of coffee-maker.
In general it preferably holds that multiple and preferably different beverage preparation products are deposited to the chambers, either in a mixture or on their own. It is possible to provide at least one chamber with a soluble beverage preparation product and/or at least one chamber with an extractable beverage preparation product. Preferably the outer chamber(s), here the chamber 1 IB, with regard to a central axis, is comprising at least one soluble beverage preparation product 6B, e.g. milk powder etc, as mentioned above. Preferably the inner chamber(s) 11A, surrounded by the outer chamber(s) 1 IB is comprising at least one extractable beverage preparation product, e.g. ground coffee or similar products.
Further, in the holder of the coffee-maker of Fig. 18, also a coffee pad Γ according to Fig. 20 may be placed, which is provided with an inner space which is filled with ground coffee, while the inner space is formed by a top sheet 2A' and a bottom sheet 2B' which are interconnected adjacent their longitudinal edges, while the top sheet and the bottom sheet also form an outer side of the pad and are each made from flexible filtering paper. The coffee pad Γ and the holder 16 are tailored to each other so that the coffee pad can be received in the holder for preparing coffee, such that, in use, the fluid is supplied under pressure to the upper side of the pad and is pressed through the pad so that the fluid flows through the top sheet whereby in the pad a coffee extract is formed which proceeds to leave the pad via the bottom sheet and wherein the coffee extract proceeds to flow out of the holder via the beverage outflow opening of the holder. The bottom sheet of the pad here extends over the bottom 34 of the holder up to the upstanding sidewall 38 of the holder, thereby also forming a sealing with the holder to prevent bypass. The beverage can leave the pad there where the grooves are. Accordingly, the invention also concerns a system provided with the coffee-maker, the pad 1 and the pad Γ, allowing a user, as desired, to use the pad 1 or the pad Γ for preparing the beverage. In general and especially in each of the embodiments outlined, the second sheet and/or the first sheet may have a smoothly running inner and outer surface within the sealing seam. However, in each of the above- outlined embodiments the second sheet may also be so configured as to be provided with at least one groove or a multiplicity of grooves to increase form retention of the second sheet, with the grooves 92 extending, for instance, in radial direction of the pad and/or with the at least one groove 90 constituting a circumferential groove closed upon itself, extending around an axial axis of the pad, for example in the sealing seam (groove 90.1) or in the second sheet outside the sealing seam so that the groove (90.2) has a smaller diameter than the sealing seam. This is shown in Fig. 20a in which a view of the second sheet 2B is shown. The same however could also be applied to the first sheet 2A. The radial grooves 92 extend to near the sealing seam 10. It is also conceivable, however, that the radial grooves extend into the sealing seam 10 (indicated for one groove 92.1). The grooves in this example have a V shaped cross section. Other shapes, such as a U- shaped cross section, are also possible. By providing the above mold with such grooves and providing the respective stamp with ribs corresponding to these grooves, the second sheet (and/or the first sheet) can be provided with the respective grooves 90, 92 by carrying out with such a mold and stamp, as desired, one of the methods which have been discussed before.
In general the first and/or the second sheet can be shaped such that it is provided with at least one groove or a multiplicity of grooves especially to increase the form retention of the second sheet, at least one groove for instance extending in a radial direction and/or radial spiraling direction or similar winding radial direction of the pad and/or extending in a circle or similar path around an axis, in an especially concentric pattern or in a non- concentric pattern, all paths closed or open on themselves, and/or extending in a winding path or curved path and especially a helical or similar path and/or extending around an axial axis of the pad, for instance in the sealing seam or on the sheet inside an area enclosed by the sealing seam and preferably around an axis so that it is extending along said axis with a smaller diameter than the sealing seam. Further with regard to the grooves the above mentioned can be applied.
Fig. 21 discloses a further embodiment of the inventive pad 1 comprising a horizontal and vertical stacked arrangement of different product receiving chambers 11, all comprising a beverage preparation product 6. The pad comprises a first layer 2A, a second layer 2B and 3 enforcement layers 3A, 3B. The enforcement layers are attached to a sealing seam 10 as explained with regard to the before embodiments. The pad further comprises an intermediate layer 100, wherein the respective enforcement layers are meandering between the respective sides of the intermediate layer 100 and inner sides 12A, 12B of the first and the second layer respectively. All the before explained features are applicable with this embodiments and its respective parts. Fig. 22 shows a further embodiment of an enforcing sheet 3 in an extracted isometric view. Here preferably holds that the enforcing sheet meanders in such a way, that at least part of the connecting portions 5A are extending with regard to their major extension direction in a radial manner in direction to a central axis Ac. In a plain view the connecting portions and the intersecting portions are defining preferable the geometric form of a segment of a circle, wherein here the upper connecting portions 5A and a interconnecting portion, not shown, but identical to the one explained with the other embodiments are defining a segment. The lower connecting portions are connecting spots 5B. Especially the connecting portions can be arranged in such a way that those portions 5A arranged on the first sheet (see e.g. fig. 1) are directed to a common especially central intersection point which is here arranged on the central axis Ac. The same is alternatively or in combination applicable to the connecting portions arranged on the second sheet (see e.g. fig. 1). With this embodiment the enforcing sheet 3 meanders in a direction surrounding the central axis Ac preferably oscillating in a direction parallel to said central axis. The meandering direction is indicated by reference sign DM. Preferably it holds that the enforcing sheet meanders in a tangential direction to the sealing seam preferably oscillating in a direction parallel to the central axis. Points of Maximum oscillation along this meandering direction are preferably having the same distance from the central axis and/or from the sealing seam. Here these points are arranged on the outer circle line of the sheet 3. In detail here the points of maximum oscillation are arranged at the inner edge portion of the sealing seam (not shown) wherein the oscillation degreases in direction to the central axis. In the foregoing specification, the invention has been described with reference to a specific embodiment of the invention. It will, however, be evident that various modifications and changes may be made therein without departing from the broader spirit and scope of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
However, other modifications, variations and alternatives are also possible. The specifications, drawings and examples are, accordingly, to be regarded in an illustrative rather than in a restrictive sense. In the claims, any reference signs placed between parentheses shall not be construed as hmiting the claim. The word 'comprising' does not exclude the presence of other features or steps then those listed in a claim.
